Australian Disruptive Camouflage Pattern Effectiveness

  • In this video we look at the Australian Disruptive Camouflage Pattern (DCP). The pattern is also commonly referred to as DCPU (Disruptive Camouflage Pattern Uniform) and AUSCAM. We will be testing this Camouflage in a Woodland Environment during early Autumn/Fall time (North Texas woods). This video will consist of numerous scenes where each will begin with a concealed stationary position (both with & without the use of vegetation), followed by a movement phase out of the initial position. The purpose of the video is to give the viewer a chance to see the individual camouflage pattern and how it looks and blends into this environment. There will be varying degrees of how much of the uniform will be exposed to the viewer. Some scenes will only expose little more than perhaps a boonie hat, while other scenes have very little vegetation covering.

    the reason this pattern kicks ass is because the Australian Defense Forces are a military that services not just a country but a CONTINENT with deserts, mountains, plains, Tasmanian forests, and Queensland Jungles

      Itsnodawayitustabe We have multiple patterns of this for different environments though, And we've recently adopted a MULTICAM pattern with Australian fitted coloration.

      I agree the pattern is great. Sad to see it go. The camo is likely optimised for the tropical environment of the north of Australia. We are unlikely to be invaded from Antarctica.

    Having spent 6 years in the Australian Army Reserves, I can attest to the effectiveness of this camouflage pattern in our wilderness, however, it's unsurprising that it's not entirely effective in the Autumn of North America, in fact, I doubt there'd ever be a time of year where Auscam would blend into the North American flora - I'd also like to point out that this camo pattern actually gets better as you wear it and it fades in the harsh Aussie sunlight...

    This may be the best military pattern test I've seen. It may be the time of day combined with the time of year, but this pattern is as close to perfect in this test as you can get. 3:55 I would have stepped on you.

      @MilitiauScom 7 років тому +6

      Foxhound R336 I believe its not just the color pallette, but the size of the pattern disruption is "leaf sized" and blends seamlessly into the deciduous forest.

    • @foxhoundr3364
      @foxhoundr3364 7 років тому +2

      Militia.uS.com Agreed. It was a good pattern for its time. It really did blend into any environment we operated out of. The new Muti-cam version is now even better.

    • @MilitiauScom
      @MilitiauScom 7 років тому +2

      I think this pattern is lighter and has more defined disruption. Crye Multicam has softer edges and is a bit darker, which would make it better for a darker scene with less leaf edge foliage.

      Mate, Your not getting what your being told by an Former Aussie Soldier.....the Australians have taken the unique colour palatte of this camo pattern ( hearts and Bunnies) and remodeled it into a multicam STYLED pattern....it is unique to the Australian Forces...same as the British use MTP, a UNIQUE Multicam derivative but in British colours and designs.... Foxhound R336...I've seen the new Australian Multicam......it is seriously effective from the photos etc I have seen.....Good on the Australian Forces...lots of updating and upgrading..........saw that your Kiwi neighbors have a new Camo Uniform as well.........

      This pattern is more effective than I expected. It makes me think the Aussies should keep it instead of adopting a multicam variant like everyone else.

    • @Funkteon
      @Funkteon 4 роки тому

      @@aredman22 The Multicam variants are designed by computer algorithms based on satellite and field photography of locations around the world, whereas the predecessor patterns are designed by human graphic artists in cooperation with naturalists and experienced military personnel... The fact is, the Multicam patterns are easy to produce and modify for different environments and don't require the consultation of human artists etc when making changes based on the region they will be used - I, for one, prefer the old way of deciding on camouflage patterns and not much of a fan of Multicam.

  • @ianr02

    As has been mentioned before in the comments, this camouflage is surprisingly effective in most of the Australian bush (forest). The Aus forest has a lot of eucalypt leaf and background colours that comprise blue grey greens, grey greens, and olives that allow the camouflage to blend into the background extremely well. US and European forests tend to have a lot more 'green/greens' and intense greens. You really have to see this camo in the original environment to understand how well it works.

    I may be biased (read most definitely), but imo Australia DPCU's are the best in the world. Especially suited and most effective in conditions in Australia (naturally)... Except the boots. I frigging hated those boots during basic. After removing the third blister on my left foot one night I was told by our corporal to wear them in the bath/shower. After that the most painful part was keeping them clean. But I'll hand it to the yanks, I remember doing a swap with some U.S marines when on exercises for their boots and they were bloody great (and the marines were top blokes too).

    It seems to do well in that dry woodlands but I'm sorry to say that either this is a very earlier version of the DPCU or a commercial copy. The current DPCU has zippered leg pockets,,,velcro sleeve adjustments,,pockets on the upper arms and if it was traded from a Australian serviceman it would have the "Rising Sun" patch on the upper left arm,,,what we call a biscuit.
    The pattern itself is different,,,the "blotches" are too big and not the right shapes,,,I've been wearing this uniform for 8 yrs now and can spot a copy a mile off. Commercial companies are not aloud to use the exact same colors as the DPCU so unless you hold a real and copy together u may not realize. One way to tell is if there are any "bunnies" in the blotches. Some of the blotches have a bunny rabbit shape. The shape of the color blotches are quite distinctive with DPCU and they also cannot be copied by commercial companies.

    Environment in video looks a lot like my environment in southeast Queensland at present. One thing I've noticed regarding dpcu, and is noticeable in parts of this video, is that when the sunlight is behind, it tends not to silhouette the entire form as a whole, but highlights edges of the form, and hence further breaks up the human shape.

    Very good video. Top shelf.
    Just my opinion here....
    I live in Australia, and Auscam works really well during seasons where the foliage is starting to die off, and while there might be some green about, there's more tans and browns visible. In really thick, lush, green environments, Auscam doesn't do as well. It still performs reasonably, but there are better patterns for predominantly green terrains. But in Australia, so much of the terrain is semi-arid, hence the colour scheme of Auscam.
    Of all the points, the main drawback I see about the old Auscam (as shown in this video) is that the spots and blobs are too uniform and similar in shape. Altogether bad? No. But having more variety in the pattern shapes would go a long way. The new Australian Camouflage pattern is a big improvement:
    soldiersystems.net/blog1/wp-content/uploads/2014/05/Cold-Weather-AMCU.jpg

    The colour scheme is similar/identical to the original Auscam, but the pattern shapes are totally different.
    While I think the new Auscam (link below - top uniform) is fantastic, I think Original Crye Mulitcam (link below - middle uniform) has a better colour scheme:

    On a side note - in the US, the Autumn/Winter seasons are more brown/tan in appearance, where the foliage starts to die off, and there's much less green about. But during your Spring/Summer seasons, you have much more lush green foliage.
    In Australia, it's pretty much the reverse. Except for far Northern Australia....our Summer is extremely dry and arid, where there's not that much greenery about, and browns/tans dominate. But in Winter, there's more rainfall and much more lush greenery about.

    The original version was meant for north west, and north central Australia which is basically very dry. The one you are wearing is good for those arid areas along our north west. As a collector you may be interested that this pattern has had 8 variants, with three of them hard to get, and 2 of them quite valuable. 1. Trials pattern DPCU ( background colour is a light green instead of beige, better for Queensland, and extremely rare now 2. DPCU (the one you are wearing) 3. Red DPCU for opfor exercises, which turned out to be very very effective in the desert. 4,5, and 6 DDPCU Desert DPCU for the middle east, with a pale background, yellow background and grey background. (3 very diff variations). 7. Mid-Point which is between desert and normal DPCU and was never used. 8 DPNU for the RAN ( Navy..greys and greens but same pattern) oops...forgot, a ninth is a trial that was done for the RAAF ( Air Force) but never used. Instead they now have a bright/garish/non-tactical type of multicam with 4 types of blue. Looks good, but even their official documents state it is not to be used in any combat area/activity. ( I had to read that about 5 times as I just couldn't believe they were openly saying it was just decorative !) You make great videos. Keep it up and enjoy camming up and blending in ! Cheers.

      Really late to the party and having been exposed to almost all those patterns across my time in the RAAF and Army and posted to a unit with Pussers where everyone wore DPCU we all looked the same and aside from the Navy and Air Force with tapes on the left breast and the flag you couldn’t really tell each other apart in barracks, the reason the Air Force went with the blues on blues Camo was it was easier to hide stains from working on and around the aircraft, much life the reason the navy went from solid grey overalls to DPNU to hide stains when at sea and have a Camo pattern that I’d edifies them as military and not civilian, but it’s main purpose was a uniquely identifiable ‘corporate’ uniform that would make the RAAF stand out from the other 2 services again much like DPNU did for the navy thanks to the TV Show Sea Patrol that thrust DPNU into the average Aussies house.
      Being Army in a RAAF area and RAAF at an Army unit in my career all wearing DPCU in barracks no one knew what service you were. But with adoption of the Blue Camo at least you can tell what service they are. Deployed and field it doesn’t matter.
      I do like the fact we adopted AMCU over Multicam in the end I personally believe tests may have been skewed to show AMCU was superior across all terrains over Multicam as ADA will make more off AMCU than Multicam but I appreciate us having our own variation that works.
      I do think it was a lot of money spent taking navy from Grey overalls to DPNU to MMPU and RAAF from CWD to DPCU to GPU and then Army through all its DPCU variation to AMCU has cost a lot.
      But at least we save money now by making all barracks uniforms the same patterns of Camo (with colour changes) and the same shirt and trousers across all services instead of Navy having a different cut for trouser and shirts with day glo and even the change from taking pleats out of RAAF service dress pockets to flat pockets to match all the others has now saved money long term.

    In my opinion, you should invest some money in a higher-quality camera, something that records in 4K resolution. I think it would add a lot of immersion to your videos, especially for viewers who watch on high-resolution screens. Your videos are certainly the best of their kind on UA-cam, but they would look fantastic with a better camera.

    pretty good !, I never really liked this Camo as it is too 2D, but watching you testing it , I am impressed 8-9/10 I would say . this pattern is based on a US ww2 pattern used by marines in Iwogima and it was also used to some degree in Vietnam . Australians may have inherited this pattern with some coloration changes they made to match their environment

    • @lancerd4934
      @lancerd4934 4 роки тому

      The newer one looks awesome, but I've now seen a few once they go through the wash a few times (there's a military base in my town) and... I'm not too impressed. With the old ones, the pattern was big enough that even when faded, it still had large areas that were overall lighter or darker at a distance. On the other hand the pattern on the AMCUs is so small that, while they do have multicam's macropatterns in them when they're new, once they fade, they just blend into an overall single greenish tan colour. It's one of those things that I think probably looks great on paper and in the publicity photos, but in practice isn't necessarily an improvement unless they can figure out some more colourfast dyes. But hey, at least it probably reduces the chance of friendly fire incidents with our most significant allies since we're all wearing very similar looking uniforms now.

      Its 2 months old I know, but the best thing to do with any sort of camo is break your outline. Human eye goes for movement, then it sees outlines, if you can break it well, you get invisible.

    that is great camo, also known as jelly bean camo, or has been called out as a clowns uniform no offence aussies, I think it looks better than the new design and is more effective and original, the new camo in the australian army is just a rip off version of the multi cam pattern design with an australian adjustment making it more bean like in the pattern, the Austraian forces still use this camo as well as an updated version off this exact camo shown in video with same colors which is based off the multi cam version that they also have that is a rip off version of the us multi cam which is like what the brits did with their multi cam

    • @jimmyrecard6021
      @jimmyrecard6021 4 роки тому

      the new camo was adopted because Australia has a wide variety of biomes and climates, they would rather 1 camo do pretty good in all environments than 1 camo do very well in 1 environment.
