    • @JulianKrause
      @JulianKrause  4 роки тому +4

      Hey, dir calibration make sure you have the smartphone as close as possible to the mic. And with the SM7B you probably have to turn the volume on the smartphone to about 80%. If nothing is working out, just turn the gain on the 202HD all the way down, make sure to disable the PAD on the 202HD, set your output on the 286s to 0 (12 o'clock) and set your gain on the 286s so that the green LEDs light up when you talk. Please use a TRS to TRS cable to connect the 286s to the 202HD for this to work.

      They are great interfaces - are they the USB/Firewire hybrids? You can chain them together with Firewire to get a huge number of ins and outs. In OSX you have to create a hybrid audio interface - there are several tutorials on the internet. The realtime reverb on the latency free monitoring is great for the talent when recording.

One thing that seems weird to me is the latency - you get 15 ms at 128 buffer at 48k which is quite high for an interface that claims low latency as one of its main advantages. Could it be a Windows thing? I've seen people on Mac get much lower latency. Or maybe your RTL results are measured and are different to what the interface is reporting?

    Hi Julian,
    You didn't mentioned that this interface allows to record in with 32 bit depth.
    Do you have some information about the AD conversion that Motu uses to achieve that? Is it a double converter technology like in the Zoom F6 (I would love a review with that interface by the way) or is it completely different?
    Can you add a lot of digital gain without adding a lot of noise if you record in 32 bit resolution?
    Thanks!

  • @markbarsamian

    I appreciate this very thorough review. It helped me make the decision to buy this interface. Two bits of information that others might find useful: (1) One of my applications for this interface is to do location and outdoor recordings, with my Android phone as the recorder (using the USB Audio Recorder Pro app). I was concerned that the phone might not provide enough power for a bus-powered interface. But I am happy to report that my Moto G6 powered the MOTU M2 (with phantom on) for over 100 minutes before I got tired of testing and turned it off. (2) I want to point out that although USB C is very nice because it is a symmetrical plug, I am disappointed that on my devices with USB C jacks, there is a noticeable amount of play in the connection. The MOTU M2 is no exception: when the provided cable is plugged into the USB C jack, it can wiggle a lot. My Anker USB C cables also wiggle in the jack. I would rather have a USB B jack on the back of an interface. (Especially because for my outdoor recordings, the interface will be running while in a tote bag. I would be more confident in a USB B plug & jack being able to take some knocking around .) But overall, this is an excellent interface and I would choose it again.

    To set your gain 'properly', you need to know what level your converter is calibrated to. I think the most common is -18dBFS to -16dBFS (the digital meter). When analog gear is outputting 0dB VU (optimal level) it will show up on your digital meter as -18dBFS to -16dBFS. If you keep cranking up that analog gear louder and louder, to get the digital meter closer to 0dBFS, you'll risk overdriving and distorting the analog stages in your signal path (everything before the actual A to D conversion, including between the MOTU preamp and the converter chip).
    Not only that, but the loudest peaks will very likely hit 0dBFS (clipping, ruined recording) because you ran out of headroom. That does not sound good. Think about it. At 0dBFS, your analog side is cranked to +18dB VU. Picture an analog VU meter pegged at +18dB. Get the picture? Then, you just hit 0dBFS, so you CLIPPED in digital. A clipped recording of distortion.
    The best way is to keep your analog side at about 0dB VU. That will go in the computer at -18dBFS to -16dBFS. Great. Then, after the recording is done, you can normalize the track, to bring up the volume. Before you do this, you should know whether your mixing plugins are designed to work best at -18dBFS, or on normalized tracks. Don't worry about making it 'loud' until you get to the mastering stage.
