I've watched hundreds of hours of tutorials for this dumb game and this is the first truly cohesive explanation of why and when to use air roll that makes sense to me. So many others just say "make adjustments." It's not often I get excited to open up a training pack... well done.

I've the same feeling - I'm sure I've watched 99% of the DAR videos out there and Griff's last video has been my guide recently. This one definitely clears things up for me and gives me very specific, very tangible things to think about as I practice. The only negative thing I have to say is that I'm traveling this week so I won't be able to put this into practice until I'm home next week. 🙂
I'm super excited about the training pack - Looking forward to getting comfortable with it and then tackling part 2!!

Best air roll tutorial I've seen by far. Advanced players (the teachers/video makers) often forget when teaching a new technique how it felt to learn with zero experience and knowledge. The way you break down the training and pack starting as simple as possible is extremely useful. Progression of skill application and difficulty is absolutely key. Hopping in and jumping straight into a wall-to-air dribble pack is overwhelming and super inefficient to practice. Thanks for the tips!

I really like the foundation style of learning and building up the skills here. I would really like to see this or a similar training pack like the Musty Speedflip Kickoff Test, which constrains the effectiveness of the most efficient path to the ball to create a true test I can take that gives very direct feedback. Not sure how that would be created for these types of scenarios, but something I've always wanted.

I appreciate your deeply insightful analysis of the most efficient methods to use air roll. I'm a C1 that's only been playing the game seriously for the past year, and I have been intermittently trying to master air roll for at least 6 months. I'm to the point where I understand how to use it just before touching the ball to angle the shot to preference, but am horrible and slow at making multiple chained adjustments to control the ball through the air altogether. I'm always one to try to put as much knowledge behind what I'm doing as possible, and this is certainly no exception. That said, you're the only one that I've run into that breaks things down into the nerdy way that I like to analyze things, and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you! Putting metrics and reasoning to the methods definitely increases my confidence in learning. Thanks a ton, please keep doing what you're doing!

Except it's really not. That is to say that it doesn't give a good answer on how to learn DAR. He basically says he was wrong in his last video and the way he taught people to learn it, which is by using a single joystick input to learn to turn the car is way too limited, which is correct. Then he gives no alternative learning method for DAR.
The map he created is NOT going to help you learn DAR. Most of the stuff he showed in the first few shots especially can be done just as well with regular air roll, but that's not even the point. He told you to 'practice' your DAR on these shots, especially the later ones. But how are you supposed to practice actually hitting/carrying a ball or even HITTING A DOUBLE TAP when you can't even keep the car up when using DAR because you just started learning it? This is a good map if you already can control your car quite well and turn any way you want. The bullshit he says about not practicing in ring maps is not true at all. You're never gonna learn how to control the car when you don't even isolate the learning DAR part, you have to be focused on not only just moving your car in a direction you want, but also carrying/hitting the ball at the same time. This will absolutely stagger your progress at learning car control using DAR. First actually learn to control the car using DAR, then start practicing shots like these.

I love this idea and I'm going to try out this training pack to see how I fair with the current state of my DAR.
As for single stick input, it creates a bad habbit because our default reaction to a blackout moment is to go back to what we know (which would be that single stick), so instead of learning the single stick method, beginners are better to learn how to control their car from different angles, learning this not only improves overall car control but provides the player the foundation needed to learn DAR, this is something I've preached a few times on reddit (different username) for the past year and a half.
I, like you, began by learning the single stick but a month into learning I realised I wasn't progressing and I couldn't figure out how to use the other inputs, I then realised I needed to learn how to control my car based on my camera's POV.
So I used pillars and spent my time flying in a figure 8.
    1. Normal - (hood facing camera)
    2. Backwards (hood facing away)
    3. Left - (hood facing right)
    4. Right - (hood facing left)
I started with number 1, once I could do a figure 8 at least 3 times without crashing I progressed to number 2, then 3 and 4. This trained me to know how to control my car regardless of the direction it was facing, took me about 2 weeks to complete steps 1 to 4 (three times each) without crashing, then I started implementing it into DAR which made learning so much easier because now instead of having to figure out the controls, I just had to figure out the timing for my inputs.
This method (at least for me) dramatically improved my car control, removed so many blackouts for just normal game play and helped me learn DAR.

In the follow up you need to mention how important facing the ball is (both on ground and off the wall) before pushing through for air dribbles/hits. I think a lot of diamond and even champs dont do this well and when you get to the higher level that second or 2 is long enough to get beat in the air. This is something small but it makes a big difference and is essential for reaching GC and up. As always great vid. Look forward to more content.

Definetly yes.. Im basically GC1 Id say.. (hard to say after this seasons weird reset and those crazy mixed Champ Lobbys.) But yeah especially against good and faster players you notice instantly how much of a difference a perfect, decent or bad first touch does.. and by bad I dont mean losing control just having it to far away from you.

This is a great tutorial. When I first played this game in 2016, I initially disliked the way that advanced players seemingly freestyled their shots using air rolls, but I realized that they just had numerous hours of practice. So I focused more on the practical aspects: What is the best and efficient way to score this shot? And if it involved air rolls, then I made sure to utilize them well in a game sense. The downside of this is what will most commonly be seen or played in a match, it may not be enough for unconventional situations where I have to control my car in a certain way in the air to score a very specific shot. I know what needs to happen to score a goal, but my mechanics aren't up to par with my game sense-- which is why practicing mechanics is really important even if it's boring!. I don't play that much any more, but I always respect and admire the skill that these players have nowadays for the amount of hours they put in.
Thanks for the video! It really made me think of the times I poured my time into this game practicing the mechanics that interested me and remembering that feeling of finally pulling them off in a live match.

The best thing I did that allowed me to start using it more correctly was after watching flakes 1v1 series about ball possession. Now I practise keeping ball possession I try to hit the ball in the air in a way that I can keep possession while in the air or after the air which means no more spamming direction air roll. It now HAS to be done intentionally to get the angle I need and then stop rolling as soon as I have that angle to get both an outplay and ball possession

Essentialy what people struggle with when they learn to somewhat roll is that they use too much input and their nose of the car points around the ball, hence wasting the boost and the time yuo need to come to the ball.
Excellente video, explains that simpler always has its soul :)
Although on first shot i have to correct you that there is absolutely no need to air roll, just hit it with the hitbox that's closer to the goal.
Meaning that when you showed how you went over the ball and pushed it down, you're doing the same thing with air roll, youre comming above it, hitting it in the same place just with your car rotated differently.

As soon as you showed your training pack where you have us practice simply rotating the car I was like wow this mans a genius. Now my brain can learn what it looks like to rotate and hit the ball at different angles

Hey Griff, thank you for the guide! This is so helpful. I was using DAR all the time and only using ARL when doing a 180 degree flip cancel.. I’m going to work on changing that mindset and muscle memory!
By the way, what is the decal on your Fennec?

Key bindings I use that helped me a lot… air roll and power slide L1. Air roll right to square. Boost to R1.

@hammondgurka I definitely recommend you try this out. Watch the video along with the training pack and it literally teaches you what you need to get started.
I've been waiting for a part 2 video to cover some more about it but may not need it. After a bit of training, your body just naturally picks up the rhythm and motions needed to perform. Just a note, don't get too addicted because you prone to whiffing the ball more than you need to lol

I still primarily use standard air roll for most aerials. I have air roll left bound but mainly use it for recoveries occasionally. I could believe that when first playing the game that directional air roll might be easier to learn, but I don’t think it has that much of an advantage over standard air roll if that’s already been mastered. However, I do agree with most of the advice given, especially learning to minimize the use of air roll.

I've been saying this for a long time. Rings are great to get the muscle memory down but learning to use DAR efficiently is something else.
I figured it out in defensive training packs when your car is positioned is way you can only save the shot if you use precise DAR.
