Agreed. People used to trash on the animation of these films and were saying that The Legend Reborn looked a lot better. Uh... Not really? More detailed characters, yes, but the overall designs, backgrounds, animation, colors, and camera work was considerably better in the OG Trilogy. Mask of Light was a little rough around the edges and stiff at times, but that's it.
@@FoxsDumbSeriesMaker the o ly thing I hated about the old films was the fact their idea of slow motion was simply slowing the frame rate and blurring everything. Other than that the animation really held up for quite a while. Bionicle 3 possibly has the best of everything in all the movies out together, including Legend Reborn
@@drag0nemper0r97 Ah yes, the "laggy slow motion". I feel that the animators were just cutting corners with those scenes and didn't want to animate them properly. lol
It’s a case of good lighting, effects, and art direction making up for technical limitations. I can only imagine what this team could do with today’s technology.
Honestly seeing nidhiki and krekka being joined with makuta was chilling and then they became part of his body which is why we see that in mask of light
This brings back memories of better times of back in the day… wish we got more of these types of great movies, and not the dumbed down stuff of these days
The cgi isn't that good like amazingly, on its own but the thing that helps it a lot is the art style and the metallic / textures on surfaces A good art style and not trying to make photo realistic flash makes old cgi stand the pass of time really good
Thank you so much for bringing these back to us. Bionicle was my obsession as a kid and I watched all three of these movies so many times over. I even had Mask of Light on VHS.
It was always strange to me that Nidhiki (the second main antagonist of 2004) didn't have his name said until halfway through Legends of Metru Nui. His partner, Krekka, had his name said within the first few minutes, so people watching would have been wondering what "the spider guy's" name was throughout the film.
@@dmitribrutus5543 It’s more so how nobody said his name until the end of the film, so new viewers watching wouldn’t have known what to call him until, well, the end. lol

I remember where I heard Whenua’s voice from. Transformers Cybertron! Landmine! That was driving me crazy. I’m also curious about Toa Lhikan. I guess he’s the Toa of Fire but the gold mask really throws you off. As a kid I thought he was the first Toa of Light as a sort of forerunner to Takanuva. Given his golden mask and that it eventually becomes Jaller’s mask, Takanuva’s best friend. I also want to know what happened to his fellow Toa. It seems to imply those 2 minions of the Makuta were once his brothers (presumably ice and air), who must have forsaken their Toa status and betrayed him. I wish we got some backstory about him.
Lhikans brothers were sent on deadly missions by the fake Dume. Most of them were killed by a third Dark Hunter, codename Eliminator, who was never mentioned in the movie or the comics that came out during that time. The Dark Hunters are not really Makuta's minions. He rent them from a crime lord (The Shadowed One). Him eating the two later caused a war between their respective armies. Lhikans team had eleven members. Tuyet, Toa of water, stole an object that allowed her god level elemental powers and wanted to take over the world. The Dark Hunters found out and followed her. To make authorities aware of the Hunters that were on her tracks she killed several citizens and placed evidence that blamed the DH. When she continued to do that after the Hunters were arrested, she was stopped by Lhikan and Nidhiki. (In the multiverse there is a dimension where she succeeded, a lot of characters were killed there and even their Makuta is afraid of Toa) Nidhiki later allied with the Dark Hunters, who had declared war on the city, because Dume didn't allow them to build a fortress on Metru Nui. He was supposed to guide the other Toa into a trap, but Lhikan witnessed his betrayal and planned an ambush on the ambushers, ending the war. Nidhiki was sent alongside the other Dark Hunters to the Shadowed One. The Shadowed One didn't like Toa, or people who betray their allies, even moreso if their betrayal was unsuccessful. Nidhiki was allowed to stay and trained Dark Hunters on the island. His most frustrating student was a creature from the island of Stelt, who lost one eye in a fight with Makuta's sister Gorast, purely because of stupidity. When Nidhiki asked The Shadowed One whether he could get a partner for missions, the Shadowed One assigned him with Krekka, knowing well that it would be agony for Nidhiki. Nidhiki soon had enough and planned to leave the island. At this time Roodaka made her visit. She wanted to ask the Shadowed One for training. But he refused, knowing that she didn't had the intention to join him. Nidhiki made a deal with Roodaka. Together they were supposed to leave the base. But when he waited for her to show up, he was struck by a projectile and transformed into the giant crablike creature he is today. Roodaka had made a deal with the Shadowed One, she would punish Nidhiki with her mutation spinner and he would allow her training.
@@williamkim9861 there is a multiverse. It was established a year after the third movie came out and there was a small side arc where the Toa of Light gets launched into the multiverse because Brutaka, a guy who can summon dimensional gates with his mask, wanted him to quicktravel but his mask was broken and he had a small odyssey in which he found a dimension where Makuta accidentally killed the Great Spirit (told in the online released short story The Kingdom) and one where said Toa had her regime (short story Dark Mirror). There is also a universe where there is no Great Spirit but Makuta is a being of light and one where their roles are reversed. Lhikans story was told in the book Legacy of Evil as it intertwined with the origin story of the Piraka. Tuyet first showed up as a corpse in the underwater arc in the short story Into the Darkness and was then expanded upon with her origin story the many deaths of Toa Tuyet. Nidhiki's origin story is told in the short story Birth of a Dark Hunter and was then retold in Legacy of Evil from the Piraka's perspective. And Eliminator was established in the official Dark Hunter guide book.
I actually got into watching Transformers Cybertron back then because I recognized Whenua's voice as Landmine, and became a huge Transformers fan because of it XD
Our *Unity* makes us strong as the Toa. Honoring the BIONICLE Legends is our *Duty* Remembering the BIONICLE Legends is our *Destiny!* It shall forever pass on.
Couple takeaways: Wow, the animation still holds up today. Great visuals and some pretty good sound effects. The music goes hard, way harder than it has any right to. Really emotional and it helps make the story compelling. The lore in this franchise is so under appreciated. This story spans so much time and different territories and yet every story has an insane amount of tension. I like the attack of the clones style intro to the visorak horde when Sidorak introduces them to Vakama. I expected “magnificent, aren’t they” lmao Vakama’s struggle as a leader from being unsure, to then being cocky and bitter, to finally being a wise and accepting leader is something everyone can learn from.
Man they really need to do a reboot of this franchise. These movies were great, and could you imagine how it could be expanded upon now? I remember the very basic mmo-ish type pc game they came out with and I just wish they would have made full on one where we could have explored the world. That would be so sick.
They rebooted six years ago with online shorts and a 4 episode Netflix show. Didn't go well. But if they can pull it of properly I would absolutely be on board.

This... This is my Bionicle... My Spark of Imagination. The spark of Monsters. Every had the Rahi Beast book? I remember going to every book fair at my school to find any Bionicle books of any kind.. gosh better days.
It's hard to think that Vakama had to walk beside Teridax in "Time Trap," listening to all the foot stomping the entire way and the ground shaking with every step lol.
Gotta give them props for keeping these stories somewhat coherent and straight forward. Im not across alot of the lore but wow theres so much they skip over or neglect to mention and it still works
I grew up with Lego Hero Factory and it's series, then came the remastered Bionicle short cartoon series. These original movies are SO different from the renewed version, but it's so good! Makes me nostalgic somehow. Thank you!
i have no idea why this constantly pops up in my recommended but i am not complaining, these together with all the rest of Lego-Tech etc were such a big part of my childhood
Souldborne would actually work perfectly for a Bionicle game. The Toa are not exaggerated when it comes to power like Final Fantasy characters, nor are they cartoony like in Super Mario and Sonic games. They are much more grounded while still having unique abilities, so the slower and more limited options from the Soulsborne genre would work out really well. Imagine Toa facing off against huge and overpowered bosses like Rahi, Makuta, Dark Hunters, etc. For the sake of this particular gameplay style, let's just forget how the Toa Nuva in Mask of Light can so causally jump hundreds of feet into the air... XD
Still love these movies legend reborn just doesn’t have the same magic besides the one shot of Av-Matoran having the eyes and mouth peg showing when they open their mouths the first 3’depictions of the sets is brilliant could you imagine a toy accurate Sidorak would be mega freaky
Yeah. Part of it is that most recent movie just....looked like the toys, but animated. And the Glatorian are MEANT TO BE ORGANIC WITH ROBOT PARTS IN THE LORE. But they're full on flipping robots in the movie! So stupid. They should have kept the style of the first three movies (or, well, I guess the last two since improved animation, lol)
It’s a shame because the Miramax designs are so good just look at the Gukko Pewku and the Kilanalo when it came to the Rahi Skopio was literally the toy with the rider for the replica on his back despite the Skopio they fight being the actual Rahi
@@WelshGiraffa The only reason for Skopio including the rider is because they couldn't figure out how to make it work without including the rider. ...Because they just literally copied the toys for *all* of it instead of following the goddamn lore that was already established. *ugh* drives me nuts. The plot of the movie was fine, even if it did end on a cliff hanger that deserved a proper movie instead of a series of comics or whatever on the main website, but the animation appearance just. grrr. Could have been so much better.
Ahhhh the music of the "second" movie hits me right in the nostalgia. It was the first of the movies for me and i watched it around the age of 10 or even younger. Being 25 and missing those times sitting in front of the tv building new bionicles i got from my mom. Funnily enough many from my family thought i would become a mechanist or engineer because of the time i spend building bionicle😅
Thank you I loved these movies and bionical growing up and the movies got lost/destroyed during moves. I honestly forgotten about replacing them with how my life was going.
can we just talk about how this man ( I think, sorry if I got that wrong) is legendary for posting this, I really wanted to watch the movies but didn't want to buy them, thank you.
I always liked the style of the characters in this film. They were able to stay pretty true to the actual figures, but they took liberties with the designs to really sell that these weren't just robots, but these bio-mechanical beings that were alive, and felt emotions. The liberties taken in their designs made portraying emotions visually feel more organic. Bionicle also had a pretty deep lore to dive into, and it was awesome. Digging into this world of bio-mechanical creatures was fun as a kid. Hell, it got me to actually start reading books. A 13 year old kid at the time who had ADHD, was reading books. I miss the imagination in these movies, despite their weaknesses, they made up for it by telling an actual story. There's a plot, urgency, character arcs, and they were just plain fun. It was a fun trilogy. I miss when we had fun.

As for the part about being gunned down, I wasn't attributing that to color. I was referring to how the crime rate is so high that law enforcement is completely overwhelmed and it isn't even safe to leave your house half the time. Literally businesses are being looted before being burned to the ground by Molotov cocktails meanwhile our own government is turning a blind eye to the whole thing and instead is more focused on furthering their own political agenda. On top of that we can't even defend ourselves because the instant we fight back in self defense we end up in front of a judge because because somehow defending yourself all of the sudden makes you the bad guy. We are literally at Each others throats just to survive all the while our own government, the very same people tasked with ensuring our safety just watches us as if we're nothing more than entertainment for them. Our safety is compromised and there's nothing we can do about it. Also we can't expect help from other countries due to the global disinformation campaign put forth by none other than our own government. I'm blown away how the animation still somewhat holds up today! They really knew what they were doing with Bionicle 2 and 3
I feel that the animators were just cutting corners with those scenes and didn't want to animate them properly. lol
@@drag0nemper0r97 2: Metru Nui’s fight against Makuta started out in such an anticlimactic way! XD
The CGI has aged surprisingly well for being what? 20 years old now?
I thought they looked good for the time. Now it has aged but still not bad
The cgi isn't that good like amazingly, on its own but the thing that helps it a lot is the art style and the metallic / textures on surfaces
A good art style and not trying to make photo realistic flash makes old cgi stand the pass of time really good
No shxt.
Only the 3rd one has CGI that aged well

Thank you so much for bringing these back to us. Bionicle was my obsession as a kid and I watched all three of these movies so many times over. I even had Mask of Light on VHS.
It was always strange to me that Nidhiki (the second main antagonist of 2004) didn't have his name said until halfway through Legends of Metru Nui. His partner, Krekka, had his name said within the first few minutes, so people watching would have been wondering what "the spider guy's" name was throughout the film.
I guessed that Nidhiki could have been new alias for Dark Hunters or maybe a new member to the brotherhood 🤔
@@dmitribrutus5543 It’s more so how nobody said his name until the end of the film, so new viewers watching wouldn’t have known what to call him until, well, the end. lol

My God this was great for the on the spot movie night I had thanks for uploading this!

Rip legend. Thank you for this😢
The nostalgia of watching these again after so many years is insane
2:54:45 great exchange
Especially "Even my shadows cannot hide your fear"
(In the multiverse there is a dimension where she succeeded, a lot of characters were killed there and even their Makuta is afraid of Toa)
Nidhiki later allied with the Dark Hunters, who had declared war on the city, because Dume didn't allow them to build a fortress on Metru Nui.
You're frickin' right! I never realized until now that Whenua is Landmine! He even has shovels on his hands!
@@Makutros wait hold up? Where the heck did you find this info? And there's a Multiverse for this series!?
I actually got into watching Transformers Cybertron back then because I recognized Whenua's voice as Landmine, and became a huge Transformers fan because of it XD
the first set of Bionicles will always stay my fav set, they were so damn cool
It's nice to take a trip down memory lane every now and again.
I was like “dang, this is one long intro for a retrospective”, then I realized the video is literally a compilation of a three movies. Good stuff.
Our *Unity* makes us strong as the Toa. Honoring the BIONICLE Legends is our *Duty* Remembering the BIONICLE Legends is our *Destiny!* It shall forever pass on.
Thanks for this. I'm a middle aged fan of all things Bionicle. I am grateful.
Couple takeaways:
Wow, the animation still holds up today.
I expected “magnificent, aren’t they” lmao
Vakama’s struggle as a leader from being unsure, to then being cocky and bitter, to finally being a wise and accepting leader is something everyone can learn from.
I haven’t seen these movies since I was young and I loved them! This person is my hero
Who needs Snyder cut when you have this
Man they really need to do a reboot of this franchise.

Imagine a game as a Soul like but in the Bionicle univers how PERFECT this can be !!
Or a big MMO-RPG with massive multiplayer...
Oh, I'd kill for such a thing.
XD
You did it, you mad dark hunter!

Agreed! One day I'd love to put together a MOC of movie Roodaka.
It was the first of the movies for me and i watched it around the age of 10 or even younger. thank you, you have graced my recommended on this fine day
use to watch these over and over as a kid
