Why everyone saying it aged badly? It still supper valid. ''The Kris/Player/Knight/Whatever you want to call'' DOESNT have a choice at chapter 1. Not by himself that is. The only way we managed the genocide so far is by using someone else, That is Noelle. Is like in chapter one he is not allowed to kill no matter how much he tries. But in chapter 2 he realizes ''You know what, If I can't kill, Then someone else will do it for me.'' This is actually quite exciting for ''genocide'' runs of the game. We are not by ourselves anymore. We will be Corrupting other people into doing the bad thing for us. which I think is almost 2x more evil than what we did in Undertale. And That's is why Gaster is berdley confirmed.

I think there will be a genocide route in the chapter 2 because of Chara. I think Chara come directly from Undertale. Remember when she said "let's move on the next world" or something like that.

Toby literally said there is only one ending, your choices don't matter. Check his twitter, he posted a Q&A on it where he states there is only one ending and will ever only be one. He's already written all of the story, he's been writing it while making undertale. He's been writing Deltarune since 2012. (Although it took him making demo/chapter 1 3 years, and no the next chapters are at 0%. he hasn't coded anything further nor done more graphics. I strongly suggest reading his Q&A as he answers a lot!!! Like how the full game might actually be impossible unless he gets a team together, and even then we might not get the full game, but we may in 999 years for all we know.

That was a very specific scenario, where you had given over control (unwittingly, but still). The rest of the game, it could easily be said you were in control.
Kris shows remarkable resemblance to chara. Both were adopted by Asgore and Toriel and were adopted siblings of Asriel, both have been theorized to have depression/anxiety/PTSD/something else, both have a green shirt with a single yellow stripe through it, etc.

At a certain point, especially if they're an alcoholic, they are no longer in control. You give over control unwillingly. In UT, your character gets drunk on power. I didn't say anything about whether Chara was evil or not ...?
Did you notice you also can't die? Fallen members heal each turn, and if you all fall, Gaster resets it. Your choices don't matter. For now. Lancer not being king will have ramifications in later chapters.
You can die, if you get killed (the entire party) you respawn at a save point (but if you're killed by Susie & Lancer and then call Gaster, the game crashes, spoopy)
@Foxy Gamer Actually even on the pacifist run, I opted to only fight the King and I have both Kris and Susie attack him head on. You'll never be able to kill him or bring his HP to zero regardless and I still get the "Lancer overthrows his dad" ending. Basically, only the things you do with encounters prior to the king matters. The game doesn't give a damn about what you do with the king

I think what it means really, is the fact that no matter what you do, your choices will not change the future because you do NOT have a choice per say. It's all being controlled for you, you can't control other's consequences. While undertale was all about how all your choices have consequences, Deltarune is basically about how no matter what you do, the final consequences, the ending will always be the same. Just like toby stated in his Q&A that the game will only have one ending. (Check his twitter.)

Actually...if you think about it, when you first found a save spot, there was already a save file in there...with the previous name of KRIS. You chose to overwrite that file and thats where Chara took over........what if you do a no save run?
The very first thing this chapter tells you is that your choices don't matter. Susie even interrupts you trying to pick choices some... 3 or 4 times? I'm pretty sure this is intentional.
Counter-point. One of the first things you can do upon leaving your room is see the crayons, and that your favorite color is missing. Meaning your choices were not actually discarded. Meaning the survey person lied.
If you look into the game code, you'll see that it's deliberate that you cannot kill anyone. There are files missing for deaths, same with the EXP system. You can't kill anyone cause Toby didn't want too much of the main story to be revealed.
Wrong. Toby has said in a tweet that Chapter 1 is complete, minor things may change but for the most part everything is exactly how it will stay - you won't ever be able to kill anyone. "Your choices don't matter"

Delta Rune is the antithesis of Undertale, whereas one let's your choices shape the story to varying degrees, the other takes away the choices in order to show the difference between them. It's not about being "bullshit" or unique (which, it really isn't). Heck the game outright tells you choices don't matter in this.

Toby's the ONE (creator of One Punch Man) of video games, taking concepts that are normally bad for the medium in question and subverting them, just like taking the "overpowered main character" trope and actually making it original.
im sure this whole "your choices don't matter" thing is going to turn out to be something really surprising and meta within the game. cause like, in most games there is only one outcome and there is a clear limit to what you can do anyways but we don't complain. but leave it to Toby to take common game mechanics and turn it into something that we'd never expect. i don't think this game will have anything to do with LV and EXP, we already saw that plot twist in Undertale after all. this is going to be something different. i cant wait to see what he does with this concept!
Toby is telling a story with game mechanics. Sure, you can't do what you could do in Undertale but *that is the point*. This is only the first chapter, but of course he isn't going to do the same thing as last time. He will tell some sort of interesting story using ludonarrative (telling part of a story using game mechanics) in a totally different way. It would be absolutely boring and predictable if it was the exact same thing this next time around. We can't tell where Deltarune is going. I found it way too 1-dimensional compared to Undertale, but it is only one chapter of a bigger story... I'm hopeful it will accomplish just as much as Undertale once the whole story is told, but I don't want it to be the same thing at all.

Actually our choices in this game sorta do matter when you think about it. When we attack everyone in deltarune, we get an ending where everyone rushes to the throne room to kill you, but if you're kind and spare people, then they remember how nice you were and helps overthrow the king! Sure our actions have less consequences than deltarune, but I feel like thats the first instance where we can actually change the outcome!
You can actually deal 81 + 51 + 103 per turn. You have to buy the weapon for kris and hit on the mark with both characters. That would be 705 damage every 3 turns if you do it perfectly. Someone should TAS this
Interesting math. If Toby Fox made it possible even just slightly like this, he must have a reason for it. I really wonder if it can actually make us kill atleast that goddamn crowned shit. Or it's again just the enemy running away then some secret dialogue happens. I'm definitely waiting for someone to actually do that. Also, if I remember right, you can also buy a weapon too for Ralsei that damages a bit more at this part of the game or am I remembering it wrong? Atleast the second encounter with that cookie dog should give you enough damage after buying the weapons for all the characters. Unfortunately, perfect hit is inevitable or you can just redo the entire thing again, so it's gonna be a bit hard.
@@hunlepto2239 to do optimal damage in that second fight just dont buy the weapon for ralsei in the nearby shop as if you picked up the ragger earlier you would notice the weapon for ralsei in the castle shop has lower attack power meaning you could do a little more than 705 per 3 turns, just not sure how much tho as i havent tested it

"Since when were you in control? Your choices don't matter!" I think I have a small theory and it is based on what we see/hear at the ending part of the game. (Spoilers) So as we see at the end Kris is shown being possessed by Chara. Many things hint at it being Chara along with many other things hinting at something that you may not notice at first. Sans tells us that goatmom told him she has to hide the chocolate from us because we keep eating it all and we learn that we eat all of the pie as well. Yet Kris seems to be a good kid, just a bit weird. I think Chara is the one eating the chocolate and pie. You may notice Kris owns a birdcage yet owns no bird and that Kris' soul is placed into it after they are possessed. The cage is rusty, the cage and wagon seem beat up as if it has seen quite a few crashes. There is also a weird stain next to the wagon and cage. At both the gate to Noelle's home and in the hospital you can also learn from Noelle and her dad (the reindeer type monsters) that Kris has scared Noelle on two occasions. One was when Noelle saw Kris with red stuff covering their forearms and Kris had told her that it was blood to which she had begun to get scared until Kris admitted to her that it was ketchup which calmed her down. I however believe it was truly blood and that saying it was ketchup was a clever way to disguise the truth as a type of prank. Noelle's dad tells us that the other time Kris scared Noelle was when they were caught hiding under her bed once. Noelle's dad also calls us a creepy kid but doesn't seem too mad due to him being best friends with goatdad. Another thing is that you may also notice a road with yellow tape (like the kind you may see at crime scenes) blocking the way. I think that road heads out of town to a nearby human town where murders have been happening. I theorize that Chara has been possessing Kris for who knows how long, possibly for three years as an example and locking Kris' soul in the cage to keep them out of the way. Chara then has been eating all the chocolate, pie and other sweets before heading out. Chara heads to the next town over, goes on a murder spree. Then heads back home and gets cleaned up and places Kris' soul back into their body and goes back to bed before anyone notices. I also think Chara might have done something to Kris during these nighttime excursions so he won't talk to anyone. (This would explain why the cage is so beat up.) I say this due to Noelle saying that until now we haven't been so talkative but if I'm reading things right we seemed to have had been a normal kid once before. Heck Toriel even says Kris once asked when they would grow horns like the rest of the family to which she bought Kris fake horns which they used to wear all the time. (I frankly find that detail cute.) It might be possible that Kris was once a normal human kid who thought they were a boss monster and was as talkative as any other kid. Then Chara arrived and changed everything, causing Kris to become a creepy quiet kid who don't seem to care anymore. Then the events of Deltarune occur and cause Kris to start to become more like their old self again but then Chara takes back control. So perhaps that is why our choices don't matter, why we can't kill and go genocide. Because we aren't truly in control. Because Chara has already been committing genocide in secret. What if in chapter 2 we pick up with Kris the next day, go on more adventures and make more friends but then Chara takes over and we are forced to play as Chara controlling Kris. In chapter 1 we couldn't do genocide even if we tried. What if in chapter 2 no matter how hard we try, we can't spare? What if we are forced to go genocide? Those are just some of my theories based on things I noticed in Deltarune chapter one. What do you think? I think I am becoming obsessed with coming up with theories for this game. (Someone please help!)
Well, first all this game is an AU so there's a good chance Chara isn't here at all (a very good chance honestly) but if he is in the game, it quite a lot of sense makes sense. Chara could be going out to kill humans at night who knows, maybe it only started that night after Kris sealed the fountain. If it just started with the fountain, it could explain why Sans has just moved in, he sensed the anomaly and travelled there to stop it. I'm still very curious about the hidden door in the forest tho

Lots of games only have one ending but i’m saying it’s weird that toby would make a game with the whole “choices matter” shtick and then his next game heavily drawn from the previous one having only one ending. If that doesn’t mean it’s trying to send a message I don’t really know what is. Anyways it’s pretty obvious that this is the message that the game is trying to send and I know a lot of people agree. So I was wondering why I also go the sleeping king ending, I never hurt anyone, I was friendly, I even donated...but then I remembered something, some words that were uttered by an enemy: "they got barry" I think that is the reason I got the sleeping king ending.
The greater outcomes may not change, but the things IN BETWEEN are well worth fighting for. I gladly chose to be a good friend to Ralsei and respect his wishes. This CHOICE made Lancer king and ended the tyranny of his dad. It reconciled the relationship between Lightners and Darkners. It enabled me to say GOODBYE to Ralsei. These things may not matter in the greater scheme of things, but they matter to ME.
I'm hoping thats the theme Toby's ultimately going for. Whatever entity (Gaster? Chara? Both? Neither? Some other unknown entity?) is slapping all the important choices out of our hands trying to prove a point, maybe things can change with enough of the smaller ones. Guess we'll have to find out whenever the full game comes out.
Well done!! I got that “choices don’t matter” impression as SOON as Susie told me, and I remembered my vessel being discarded. How about building that machine which got destroyed? And every time Susie spoke before I could have my say. You covering an attempted Genocide Route in such detail just sealed it. I appreciate you doing that, though, because Ralsei seemed to imply that my choices DO matter, but I wasn’t sure what he meant by “fighting results aren’t favorable” so I played it safe. I had no idea we would be unhappy with the result because the result was meaningless! Plus, Toby just released a little Q/A thing on his Twitter, explaining something like “you’re confined to one path in the game and your choices don’t affect anything, even though it sounds really oppressive to say that”. So clearly the theme in this game is the opposite of Undertale-the TOTAL LACK of a free will. I wonder how it ends? I wonder why this game chooses to take away my freedom? Is it punishment for Undertale, or something else? Well, I’m excited to find out!....In probably several years.
the way i see it is they are trying to reinforce the mentality of your choices don't matter so that you'll give into the thought process yourself People will figure out that pacifist does nothing and that genocide does nothing and eventually turn neutral or full genocide again essentially resetting mentalities from back when undertale 1 first came out it's a bit underhanded but don't give up hope the fact of the matter is they keep telling you choices don't matter however small things did change and eventually the small things will add up It makes me believe that True pacifist is a very viable option

Ham Man I think it’s just another thought experiment with fans. Undertale encourages fans to think about the consequences of their choices in a fictional world. Deltarune encourages fans to think about how little their choices matter in that world (because it’s fictional??). I don’t yet know what the purpose of it is, but I’m sure there is one we’ll see in the full game. I imagine it’s something to do with our odd enjoyment of very linear storytelling games??

Funny thing is, I think I prefer this. The sheer amount of possibilities in Undertale was impressive but the player was often penalized for trying anything other than the Pacifist route. Here, you can do as you please without being called a monster.
That's kind of the message of Undertale, we allways kills the enemies on every game, but we didnt really care about it, Undertale makes us think about it, making us see how we are monster...

Yeah, but that's a major part of the experience. It makes you feel bad for what you've done; it makes you attached to the characters. Besides, if you really want to, it is possible to truly reset the game after a genocide run; True Reset resets the game to the moment you fall into the underground. Or, if you really, really want to, you could mess with the files. The entire experience truly adds meaning to how you do things, and gives you an option to if you want to be good or bad. In Deltarune, although you aren't penalized for trying to do anything other than pacifist, you also don't change anything at all when not doing pacifist; at that point, it becomes pointless to try other stuff altogether, as you won't get any new experience from it. Everyone's likes different aspects of games, though; just gotta look for what you enjoy.
I have this hypothesis that Kris in overworld vs kris in the underworld are actually Chara and Frisk. Mainly because in the overworld Kris had Charas green and yellow sweater and in the underworld Kris is wearing cyan and magenta colors, which reflects Frisks sweater. Also its been hinted in the first game that Chara was one to pull pranks, and is also retold in Deltarune. The fact that we cannot actually kill any monster matches with Frisk who (depend on how you played undertale) is either killing a few or none due to the situation at hand. Also the game file is called "SURVEY PROGRAM", so I wonder if this is like a new "world" that someone is creating with new rules to what you are allowed to control. God I'm so excited!!
Foervraengd I just remembered. The final lines of the song don’t forget are “Don’t forget, I’m with you in the dark.” Maybe the song is from Frisk’s perspective.
at the beginning, the voice allows you to choose a vessel (for your soul, that appears at the start of the connection) which is discarded and you go on to play as kris. what would follow is that your soul is the one put inside of kris, who then rejects it at the end of the game.
I think the character is the result of what happen at the end of the soulless pacifist and be the way the debug waterfall reflection witch was theorised to be a fusion of frisk and Chara look a lot like kris
Just a little correction about Jevil: When you spare him, he becomes the "Jevilstail", which is an armor (as other people already pointed out here in the comments), and when equipping it to Ralsei or Susie, the first one will say "I'm a good devil, okay?", while the second one will say "Figured I'd grow one someday." -> This tells me that (as we already know) Ralsei likes more good and cute things over bad and tough things, while Susie is the exact opposite, but also... That's a demon tail, not an average one. Susie would grow a demon's tail? That's strange. Also, dark. Probably she's just talking about tails... or not? When you defeat him, he becomes the "Devilsknife" which actually is a weapon, and it could only be equipped to Susie (since it's an axe, not a sword and definitely not a scarf (basically it was a scythe, but wathever): not-equipping it to Ralsei will result in him saying "It's too, um, evil.", while equipping it to Susie herself, she'll say "Let the games begin!" just as Jevil would say. -> This tells me that Susie could become a much more important villain than any other in this world. Why tho? Well... After not-killing Jevil he'll mention a "Queen" related to the Knight everyone talks about, and she will return bringing "Hell's roars bubbling from the depths". I'm afraid this queen could actually be Susie... Yeah, I know I'm roaming with imagination now, but all this situation could be a creepy foreshadowing of the future. (Also, remember that the old shopkeeper says that Jevil was not always "evil", he became crazy-like only after meeting a strange person, who made his vision of the world """darker, yet darker"""... Sounds familiar?)
Eh nah. Yeah it seems FITTING, but i thnk it's SUPPOSED to be fitting so we would speculate before the actual Queen comes out. Because it's clear that Susie is not really evil or something, she's just a bully and loves fighting. She's probably a tortured soul with a bad family and, before Lancer and Kris, with no friends. Why bad family? Because bullies don't just come out of nowhere, they come from a horrible environment, so that's most likely the case. Hell, maybe SHE will become the actual, reluctant hero that will have to fight against *us*. With even the control changing from Kris to her after THE DEMON takes control again and tosses our soul out. I think it's an interesting idea.
Part of me wonders if this is due to this effectively being a demo. It'd be really strange to keep the EXP text and never let you have any. It could also be something due to the nature of this realm. Assuming the rest of the chapters aren't just excuses to dive back into the Dark World you might get EXP off of enemies in the Light World. It could also end up being a major theme in the full game, guess we'll see.
I also think the EXP thing might do something later. Wouldn't make sense for Toby to do it for nothing, would it? (He even said the fights were the most difficult part to do in the game). Also, it goes along with many people theories that say that, since Kris is "possessed", chapter 2 might be a "only genocide" route. Giving the EXP a reason to be there. But I do think we could go back to Dark World. Maybe something went wrong, or the Queen (the one Jevil talks about) could return. Or Ralsei could even be evil too, or even the possessed Kris could try to get there and break havoc. Dunno, it could be many, many things. Toby said he will release the rest of the chapters at once when they get finished, so we can only wait... And be patience ;) PD: I do think Ralsei might be evil. We barely know him, and since DeltaRune is a different universe, Toby could even set a "trap" for us, since we bonded with Asriel in Undertale and therefore would never think in hurting or not trusting Ralsei. Remember that the game gives off a vibe of "appearances can be deceiving".

so basically while the means may be different, the end will always be the same, seems familiar, almost as if it in most games ever, we're playing through a story that's already been defined, no matter how you choose to play, the ending will be there, it's like you're playing Pokemon, no matter what Pokemon you choose at the start or which ones you put in your party when fighting gym battles it's gonna have the same ending. This isn't undertale, don't expect it to be like undertale, sure the background characters are very similar, but they've lived different lives, undyne doesn't know who alphys is, catty and bratty hate each other, stuff like that. The only reason why the game having only one ending is such a shock for everyone is because everyone is comparing it to undertale. you can compare the 2 games gameplay and quality wise but don't expect Delta rune to be like undertale at all in it's story, if you do, *you'll be in for a bad time* but in all seriousness, don't try so to compare the 2 games, at the end of the day I feel like it takes away from the feel of the game if you just try to make it something that it isn't.
Sorry, but If you're not meant to compare.... Why the f. They are related then? (It would not make sense to just do a game with no envolvment then? Showing new things and a new story?) And they are related because Sans knows you, as the player of both games with the same character in it.... dont get me wrong, i've got your point... "Your choices dont matter" isnt a bad idea, the game is great, but i dont think that would be just "it"... This can easily be used as a plot where in Pt.2 you cant change what is done or something like that. Or is just a simple well made demo. For me, comparing them makes both better.
Also, if anybody was super confused about Deltarune, Toby has already confirmed that the the Undertale world and Deltarune world are NOT the same, they are both different stories set in another universe.
He says they’re different universes but they have the same characters for the most part, considering you’re saving over an EXISTING save file when you start I’m certain this is suggesting that you are actually chara. If you remember when finishing a genocide run and choose to follow chara she ruins the game to make a pacifist run impossible and controls your moves in some areas. It looks like she’s taken over this universe and has take over kris.

shupasopni I played through the rest of the game today and honestly the only other thing that sticks in my head was the DONT FORGET from the last song. If you recall in a secret room in undertale there was a picture of three people with the caption don’t forget. Which is eerie because you run a three man team here. Apparently the deltarune site was also live since 2015 which I assume is Toby being cryptic and secretive again. The bunker in the city outskirts that emits a loud continuous noise as you get closer was analyzed and sped up, which resembled the same “screaming gaster” noise in undertale.
Undertale taught us that our choices have consequences. Deltarune is teaching us that we don't have a choice when it comes to the consequences of other people's choices. If the player chooses to give his soul to Chara in Undertale, he loses the Pacifist Ending FOREVER(unless you uninstall the game and start over). No matter what you do here, your choices will be discarded. In fact, I find it interesting that Deltarune is not interested in your choices for the most part...it's like it's thrown in there because people assoicate that with Undertale. No, the game itself or someone within the game is determined to make choices for you.
The one person who won't give you a choice is Toby. He has mentioned in Q&A that there will be one ending. And don't get me wrong, but I think the choices in UT were weak part. There was only 3 choices, that consider your playtruth: Neutral, Pacifist, Genocide. And Neutral give you nothing to gameplay and variety of endings (which is just Sana's phone calls), Pacifist give you some story with this Good Ending and limitation in gameplay (not available to fight and gain XP). And Genocide (the worst in my opinion) gives you the "Everything hates you", the FUCKING boring Grinding, and No pay off. There is no reason to be bad, only powerful 2 bosses. There is no limitations and rewards by in game choices, only by your playstile.

It's been mentioned but yes, while actions and results are the same, they are changes. Such as Jevil giving you a weapon if you try killing him and giving you armor if you do the pacifist road.
Serious question: what is the "peaceful" ending to the Dark World final boss? I didn't fight anyone BUT the final guy, cause I figured I'd need to get his health down, Asgore-style. I got that rushed ending instead of... apparently a better one.
Honestly, unless this becomes an important theme in the story, I hope that you can kill people in the final game, once all chapters are done. After all, part of the magic of undertale is choosing whether you are going to kill the characters or deal with them peacefully. While playing Deltarune, I thought that by doing the pacifist or genocide run you basically were chosing between Ralsei's and Susie's point of view, and then the story would develop different. I love to play pacifist in both undertale and Deltarune, I never wanted to do genocide run actually, but im not a big fun of forcing you to be a pacifist... As I said, maybe the "your choices don't matter" thing becomes really important, it has potential for an interesting plot theme, like: some horrible thing happens and you couldn't did absolutly anything to avoid it, or stuff like that. But yea I don't like Being forced to be a pacifist although i'll end up being one
Doing the pacifist/genocide paths again would be redundant. Undertale already exists, there's no need to make it again. I like the idea of the sequel taking the same theme and looking at it entirely differently. The whole game is structured around having no choice, of playing a part you don't want to, being caged, chained, tied to the inevitable, and I think it's really interesting.
I think a genocide run may be possible in chapter 2. If it takes place in the dark world again, there would be nobody to kill if you did genocide previously.
Meanwhile in Deltarune chapter 2 genocide run (Spoiler btw): You mentally torment and abuse a girl to make her freeze to death your enemies, you make her kill her childhood friend, you incourange her dark thoughts, and scare the shit out of her in the light world in the hospital, by saying to her that it wasn't a dream, and she actually killed her friend and many others.
It's not a genocide route. Its more of an evil route. Genocide means that you kill a large group of people. While in deltarune, you don't kill anyone. (Except berdly but that's not genocide)
In Chapter 1, You've got to keep Susie's rudeness and crudeness higher than 100. Also you got to get max TP in susie vs lancer fight before susie's final attack. Also keep ralsei's kindness low by not using the acts that include him or is done by him. No sparing, no pacifing, no use of kindness and compationate action, Just Pure Dark Genocide. Also for Susie before her fight against lancer, her rudeness and crudeness got to be as high as possible.

This does make a lot of sense. The fact that Chara said 'Let us erase this pointless world and move to the next' is already huge foreshadowing. The timeline probably did originate from the genocide route because at the begging we are at 'the contact' part of the game (aka the beginning when you first boot the game up) we see a soul, our soul, Frisks soul that we sold to Chara. And we can even see that the person talking to us at 'the contact' part of the game speaks a lot like Chara. And we were probably not making a vessel for us. Did you see how all of the body parts for our vessel looked a lot like Chara's parts? We were probably constructing Chara's vessel for this world.
yah, tbh i think toby is just leading people to believe that delta rune is not a sequal to throw people off so they can focus on enjoying the story for now. but i think they are linked perhaps its just another timeline or reality?
Sure, but do you really think that Toby does not has something in mind? He knows what you expect after playing Undertale, a game so exploited that it's difficult to surprise the public now. And since he commented that this was the story he really wanted to tell, Deltarune style smells like manifest. If the game points out TWICE that your decisions do not matter in the very first minutes of the gameplay, it couldn't be anecdotal. It makes you consider all the learned in Undertale before, and expect a plotwist where in your hands fall some important decision, or in contrast a future event that you can not avoid. And it could be none. A story which the main character reveals to the player a internal conflict may explore a interference between player, avatar and game.
Dishonored has the other problem, it's got a 'pacifist' route too where you can beat the whole entire game without needing to fight a single enemy, but the superpowers for combat only are just too fun to use so everyone plays through it by genocide by the end at least once blowing everything up. I like how Pacifist in Undertale though is more funner since it offers more gameplay choices and interactions with the dialogue and the game feels like it rewards you for trying different playstyles.

Pacifist is not mandatory, it is being reframed in contrast with the previous' game paradigm and actually pushing the envelope forward. VodShod Toby obviously cares enough about his work to acknowledge this. I don't know why fans are so quick to assume it won't be the same. If choices were significant in Undertale, don't you think not having them in this game as much might have a more interesting twist to it? Making another sequel to Undertale would just take away from the point of what made the game special in the first place. Not everything has to be like the original to be good.

You definitely can't get a 0% ACT rate, that's what the whole bit about K.Round was, he literally heals himself too often for you to win by FIGHTing so you have to ACT to knock off the crown. It could still be like... certain exceptions are made, like in Undertale you don't kill Monster Kid, you just don't spare him. But yeah, I think we should keep our reservations about the consequences choices may or may not have down the road, it seems like the first chapter of any story couldn't have maaajor upsets because they still have to make it to the end of the game somehow. Who knows if Toby will stick to his word about only having one ending?
@@stickmic2 Most of the debates about whether or not there will be different endings are due to a post Toby made a couple days after Deltarune came out when he explicitly said there would be only one ending, i.e. one route. I personally think he's bullshitting but who knows.
the Dark world is where your choices does matter...and the only thing different is you can't kill anybody...but you can still be described as a bad person if you defeated the enemies...that triggers the ending where the King sleeps...while the pacifist ending if you killed nobody or susie killed nobody...then you will get the ending where the king was overthrown...
The choices don't matter... yet! This is only the first chapter, after all. Who rules that world is decided by our choices, meaning that where things go from here has the potential to go down two very different routes. My thought is that the idea of choices not mattering will be challenged repeatedly as the game progresses, to the point that the character design made at the start will actually come into play in the finale.
We are talking about Toby here, even if there's only one ending, who knows what ending will be or how it will play out. Maybe he said 1 ending but your choices change something about it. Maybe the entire world is destroyed so that's why there's only one, who knows

Toby literally said there is only one ending, your choices don't matter. Check his twitter, he posted a Q&A on it where he states there is only one ending and will ever only be one. He's already written all of the story, he's been writing it while making undertale. He's been writing Deltarune since 2012. (Although it took him making demo/chapter 1 3 years, and no the next chapters are at 0%. he hasn't coded anything further nor done more graphics. I strongly suggest reading his Q&A as he answers a lot!!! Like how the full game might actually be impossible unless he gets a team together, and even then we might not get the full game, but we may in 999 years for all we know.

@Foxy Gamer Actually even on the pacifist run, I opted to only fight the King and I have both Kris and Susie attack him head on. You'll never be able to kill him or bring his HP to zero regardless and I still get the "Lancer overthrows his dad" ending.
Basically, only the things you do with encounters prior to the king matters. The game doesn't give a damn about what you do with the king

I think what it means really, is the fact that no matter what you do, your choices will not change the future because you do NOT have a choice per say. It's all being controlled for you, you can't control other's consequences. While undertale was all about how all your choices have consequences, Deltarune is basically about how no matter what you do, the final consequences, the ending will always be the same. Just like toby stated in his Q&A that the game will only have one ending. (Check his twitter.)

If you look into the game code, you'll see that it's deliberate that you cannot kill anyone. There are files missing for deaths, same with the EXP system. You can't kill anyone cause Toby didn't want too much of the main story to be revealed.

Story telling. Delta Rune is the antithesis of Undertale, whereas one let's your choices shape the story to varying degrees, the other takes away the choices in order to show the difference between them.
It's not about being "bullshit" or unique (which, it really isn't).
Heck the game outright tells you choices don't matter in this.
Choices not mattering is normally a negative in video games, but as the second Undertale-ish game, it's NUTS.
Toby is capable of transforming a lame behavior seen in many videogames, and transform it into something amazing for his own games. He is the man, the Legend. The Annoying Dog.
Toby's the ONE (creator of One Punch Man) of video games, taking concepts that are normally bad for the medium in question and subverting them, just like taking the "overpowered main character" trope and actually making it original.

im sure this whole "your choices don't matter" thing is going to turn out to be something really surprising and meta within the game. cause like, in most games there is only one outcome and there is a clear limit to what you can do anyways but we don't complain. but leave it to Toby to take common game mechanics and turn it into something that we'd never expect.

Toby is telling a story with game mechanics. Sure, you can't do what you could do in Undertale but *that is the point*.
This is only the first chapter, but of course he isn't going to do the same thing as last time. He will tell some sort of interesting story using ludonarrative (telling part of a story using game mechanics) in a totally different way. It would be absolutely boring and predictable if it was the exact same thing this next time around.
We can't tell where Deltarune is going. I found it way too 1-dimensional compared to Undertale, but it is only one chapter of a bigger story... I'm hopeful it will accomplish just as much as Undertale once the whole story is told, but I don't want it to be the same thing at all.

Actually our choices in this game sorta do matter when you think about it. When we attack everyone in deltarune, we get an ending where everyone rushes to the throne room to kill you, but if you're kind and spare people, then they remember how nice you were and helps overthrow the king!
Sure our actions have less consequences than deltarune, but I feel like thats the first instance where we can actually change the outcome!

You can actually deal 81 + 51 + 103 per turn. You have to buy the weapon for kris and hit on the mark with both characters. That would be 705 damage every 3 turns if you do it perfectly.

Interesting math. If Toby Fox made it possible even just slightly like this, he must have a reason for it. I really wonder if it can actually make us kill atleast that goddamn crowned shit. Or it's again just the enemy running away then some secret dialogue happens. I'm definitely waiting for someone to actually do that. Also, if I remember right, you can also buy a weapon too for Ralsei that damages a bit more at this part of the game or am I remembering it wrong? Atleast the second encounter with that cookie dog should give you enough damage after buying the weapons for all the characters. Unfortunately, perfect hit is inevitable or you can just redo the entire thing again, so it's gonna be a bit hard.
@@hunlepto2239 to do optimal damage in that second fight just dont buy the weapon for ralsei in the nearby shop as if you picked up the ragger earlier you would notice the weapon for ralsei in the castle shop has lower attack power meaning you could do a little more than 705 per 3 turns, just not sure how much tho as i havent tested it

"Since when were you in control? Your choices don't matter!" I think I have a small theory and it is based on what we see/hear at the ending part of the game. (Spoilers)
So as we see at the end Kris is shown being possessed by Chara. Many things hint at it being Chara along with many other things hinting at something that you may not notice at first. Sans tells us that goatmom told him she has to hide the chocolate from us because we keep eating it all and we learn that we eat all of the pie as well. Yet Kris seems to be a good kid, just a bit weird. I think Chara is the one eating the chocolate and pie. You may notice Kris owns a birdcage yet owns no bird and that Kris' soul is placed into it after they are possessed. The cage is rusty, the cage and wagon seem beat up as if it has seen quite a few crashes. There is also a weird stain next to the wagon and cage.
At both the gate to Noelle's home and in the hospital you can also learn from Noelle and her dad (the reindeer type monsters) that Kris has scared Noelle on two occasions. One was when Noelle saw Kris with red stuff covering their forearms and Kris had told her that it was blood to which she had begun to get scared until Kris admitted to her that it was ketchup which calmed her down. I however believe it was truly blood and that saying it was ketchup was a clever way to disguise the truth as a type of prank. Noelle's dad tells us that the other time Kris scared Noelle was when they were caught hiding under her bed once. Noelle's dad also calls us a creepy kid but doesn't seem too mad due to him being best friends with goatdad.
Another thing is that you may also notice a road with yellow tape (like the kind you may see at crime scenes) blocking the way. I think that road heads out of town to a nearby human town where murders have been happening.
I theorize that Chara has been possessing Kris for who knows how long, possibly for three years as an example and locking Kris' soul in the cage to keep them out of the way. Chara then has been eating all the chocolate, pie and other sweets before heading out. Chara heads to the next town over, goes on a murder spree. Then heads back home and gets cleaned up and places Kris' soul back into their body and goes back to bed before anyone notices.
I also think Chara might have done something to Kris during these nighttime excursions so he won't talk to anyone. (This would explain why the cage is so beat up.)
I say this due to Noelle saying that until now we haven't been so talkative but if I'm reading things right we seemed to have had been a normal kid once before. Heck Toriel even says Kris once asked when they would grow horns like the rest of the family to which she bought Kris fake horns which they used to wear all the time. (I frankly find that detail cute.)
It might be possible that Kris was once a normal human kid who thought they were a boss monster and was as talkative as any other kid. Then Chara arrived and changed everything, causing Kris to become a creepy quiet kid who don't seem to care anymore. Then the events of Deltarune occur and cause Kris to start to become more like their old self again but then Chara takes back control.
So perhaps that is why our choices don't matter, why we can't kill and go genocide. Because we aren't truly in control. Because Chara has already been committing genocide in secret. What if in chapter 2 we pick up with Kris the next day, go on more adventures and make more friends but then Chara takes over and we are forced to play as Chara controlling Kris. In chapter 1 we couldn't do genocide even if we tried. What if in chapter 2 no matter how hard we try, we can't spare? What if we are forced to go genocide?
Those are just some of my theories based on things I noticed in Deltarune chapter one. What do you think?

Well, first all this game is an AU so there's a good chance Chara isn't here at all (a very good chance honestly) but if he is in the game, it quite a lot of sense makes sense.
Chara could be going out to kill humans at night who knows, maybe it only started that night after Kris sealed the fountain.
If it just started with the fountain, it could explain why Sans has just moved in, he sensed the anomaly and travelled there to stop it.

What if devilsknife was used?
The greater outcomes may not change, but the things IN BETWEEN are well worth fighting for. I gladly chose to be a good friend to Ralsei and respect his wishes. This CHOICE made Lancer king and ended the tyranny of his dad. It reconciled the relationship between Lightners and Darkners. It enabled me to say GOODBYE to Ralsei. These things may not matter in the greater scheme of things, but they matter to ME.
I'm hoping thats the theme Toby's ultimately going for. Whatever entity (Gaster? Chara? Both? Neither? Some other unknown entity?) is slapping all the important choices out of our hands trying to prove a point, maybe things can change with enough of the smaller ones.
Guess we'll have to find out whenever the full game comes out.

Well done!! I got that “choices don’t matter” impression as SOON as Susie told me, and I remembered my vessel being discarded. How about building that machine which got destroyed? And every time Susie spoke before I could have my say. You covering an attempted Genocide Route in such detail just sealed it.
I appreciate you doing that, though, because Ralsei seemed to imply that my choices DO matter, but I wasn’t sure what he meant by “fighting results aren’t favorable” so I played it safe. I had no idea we would be unhappy with the result because the result was meaningless! Plus, Toby just released a little Q/A thing on his Twitter, explaining something like “you’re confined to one path in the game and your choices don’t affect anything, even though it sounds really oppressive to say that”. So clearly the theme in this game is the opposite of Undertale-the TOTAL LACK of a free will.
I wonder how it ends? I wonder why this game chooses to take away my freedom? Is it punishment for Undertale, or something else? Well, I’m excited to find out!....In probably several years.

Ham Man I think it’s just another thought experiment with fans. Undertale encourages fans to think about the consequences of their choices in a fictional world. Deltarune encourages fans to think about how little their choices matter in that world (because it’s fictional??). I don’t yet know what the purpose of it is, but I’m sure there is one we’ll see in the full game. I imagine it’s something to do with our odd enjoyment of very linear storytelling games??
Maybe the reason you can't kill anyone yet is because it is only the first chapter and Toby can't manifest your PC just yet for killing everyone...

Funny thing is, I think I prefer this. The sheer amount of possibilities in Undertale was impressive but the player was often penalized for trying anything other than the Pacifist route. Here, you can do as you please without being called a monster.

Besides, if you really want to, it is possible to truly reset the game after a genocide run;
True Reset resets the game to the moment you fall into the underground.
Or, if you really, really want to, you could mess with the files.
The entire experience truly adds meaning to how you do things,
and gives you an option to if you want to be good or bad.
In Deltarune, although you aren't penalized for trying to do anything other than pacifist,
you also don't change anything at all when not doing pacifist;
at that point, it becomes pointless to try other stuff altogether,
as you won't get any new experience from it.
Everyone's likes different aspects of games, though;
just gotta look for what you enjoy.
I have this hypothesis that Kris in overworld vs kris in the underworld are actually Chara and Frisk. Mainly because in the overworld Kris had Charas green and yellow sweater and in the underworld Kris is wearing cyan and magenta colors, which reflects Frisks sweater. Also its been hinted in the first game that Chara was one to pull pranks, and is also retold in Deltarune. The fact that we cannot actually kill any monster matches with Frisk who (depend on how you played undertale) is either killing a few or none due to the situation at hand. Also the game file is called "SURVEY PROGRAM", so I wonder if this is like a new "world" that someone is creating with new rules to what you are allowed to control. God I'm so excited!!

at the beginning, the voice allows you to choose a vessel (for your soul, that appears at the start of the connection) which is discarded and you go on to play as kris. what would follow is that your soul is the one put inside of kris, who then rejects it at the end of the game.

Just a little correction about Jevil:
When you spare him, he becomes the "Jevilstail", which is an armor (as other people already pointed out here in the comments), and when equipping it to Ralsei or Susie, the first one will say "I'm a good devil, okay?", while the second one will say "Figured I'd grow one someday." -> This tells me that (as we already know) Ralsei likes more good and cute things over bad and tough things, while Susie is the exact opposite, but also... That's a demon tail, not an average one. Susie would grow a demon's tail? That's strange. Also, dark. Probably she's just talking about tails... or not?
When you defeat him, he becomes the "Devilsknife" which actually is a weapon, and it could only be equipped to Susie (since it's an axe, not a sword and definitely not a scarf (basically it was a scythe, but wathever): not-equipping it to Ralsei will result in him saying "It's too, um, evil.", while equipping it to Susie herself, she'll say "Let the games begin!" just as Jevil would say. -> This tells me that Susie could become a much more important villain than any other in this world. Why tho? Well... After not-killing Jevil he'll mention a "Queen" related to the Knight everyone talks about, and she will return bringing "Hell's roars bubbling from the depths". I'm afraid this queen could actually be Susie... Yeah, I know I'm roaming with imagination now, but all this situation could be a creepy foreshadowing of the future.
(Also, remember that the old shopkeeper says that Jevil was not always "evil", he became crazy-like only after meeting a strange person, who made his vision of the world """darker, yet darker"""... Sounds familiar?)

A genocide run is starting to unfold now that chapter 2 came out
Part of me wonders if this is due to this effectively being a demo. It'd be really strange to keep the EXP text and never let you have any.
It could also be something due to the nature of this realm. Assuming the rest of the chapters aren't just excuses to dive back into the Dark World you might get EXP off of enemies in the Light World.
It could also end up being a major theme in the full game, guess we'll see.
I also think the EXP thing might do something later. Wouldn't make sense for Toby to do it for nothing, would it? (He even said the fights were the most difficult part to do in the game).
Also, it goes along with many people theories that say that, since Kris is "possessed", chapter 2 might be a "only genocide" route. Giving the EXP a reason to be there.
But I do think we could go back to Dark World. Maybe something went wrong, or the Queen (the one Jevil talks about) could return. Or Ralsei could even be evil too, or even the possessed Kris could try to get there and break havoc.
Dunno, it could be many, many things. Toby said he will release the rest of the chapters at once when they get finished, so we can only wait... And be patience ;)
PD: I do think Ralsei might be evil. We barely know him, and since DeltaRune is a different universe, Toby could even set a "trap" for us, since we bonded with Asriel in Undertale and therefore would never think in hurting or not trusting Ralsei. Remember that the game gives off a vibe of "appearances can be deceiving".
I'm just imagining now Kris and Susie getting caught up in some rough shit in the light world now and committing actual murder lol. Like you get EXP but now Officer Undyne is tryna solve the case of who killed these tourists who came to town.
i think that in chapter 2 you will not be possessed all the time but you will snap to being possessed and not be possessed from time to time...and you might wake up and see on the news that some monsters where killed overnight... wait mabye thats why the humans and monsters came to war. i might be on to somthing here.

so basically while the means may be different, the end will always be the same, seems familiar, almost as if it in most games ever, we're playing through a story that's already been defined, no matter how you choose to play, the ending will be there, it's like you're playing Pokemon, no matter what Pokemon you choose at the start or which ones you put in your party when fighting gym battles it's gonna have the same ending.
This isn't undertale, don't expect it to be like undertale, sure the background characters are very similar, but they've lived different lives, undyne doesn't know who alphys is, catty and bratty hate each other, stuff like that. The only reason why the game having only one ending is such a shock for everyone is because everyone is comparing it to undertale. you can compare the 2 games gameplay and quality wise but don't expect Delta rune to be like undertale at all in it's story, if you do, *you'll be in for a bad time*
but in all seriousness, don't try so to compare the 2 games, at the end of the day I feel like it takes away from the feel of the game if you just try to make it something that it isn't.

And they are related because Sans knows you, as the player of both games with the same character in it.... dont get me wrong, i've got your point... "Your choices dont matter" isnt a bad idea, the game is great, but i dont think that would be just "it"... This can easily be used as a plot where in Pt.2 you cant change what is done or something like that. Or is just a simple well made demo. For me, comparing them makes both better.

If you remember when finishing a genocide run and choose to follow chara she ruins the game to make a pacifist run impossible and controls your moves in some areas. It looks like she’s taken over this universe and has take over kris.

shupasopni I played through the rest of the game today and honestly the only other thing that sticks in my head was the DONT FORGET from the last song. If you recall in a secret room in undertale there was a picture of three people with the caption don’t forget. Which is eerie because you run a three man team here. Apparently the deltarune site was also live since 2015 which I assume is Toby being cryptic and secretive again. The bunker in the city outskirts that emits a loud continuous noise as you get closer was analyzed and sped up, which resembled the same “screaming gaster” noise in undertale.
Undertale taught us that our choices have consequences. Deltarune is teaching us that we don't have a choice when it comes to the consequences of other people's choices. If the player chooses to give his soul to Chara in Undertale, he loses the Pacifist Ending FOREVER(unless you uninstall the game and start over). No matter what you do here, your choices will be discarded.
In fact, I find it interesting that Deltarune is not interested in your choices for the most part...it's like it's thrown in there because people assoicate that with Undertale. No, the game itself or someone within the game is determined to make choices for you.
You don't have to uninstall the game. You can just simply go into the files and recover it.

The one person who won't give you a choice is Toby. He has mentioned in Q&A that there will be one ending.
And don't get me wrong, but I think the choices in UT were weak part. There was only 3 choices, that consider your playtruth: Neutral, Pacifist, Genocide. And Neutral give you nothing to gameplay and variety of endings (which is just Sana's phone calls), Pacifist give you some story with this Good Ending and limitation in gameplay (not available to fight and gain XP). And Genocide (the worst in my opinion) gives you the "Everything hates you", the FUCKING boring Grinding, and No pay off. There is no reason to be bad, only powerful 2 bosses. There is no limitations and rewards by in game choices, only by your playstile.
So like be back in time,going to the past. Everything you do is useless because it can't change the present.

Honestly, unless this becomes an important theme in the story, I hope that you can kill people in the final game, once all chapters are done.
After all, part of the magic of undertale is choosing whether you are going to kill the characters or deal with them peacefully. While playing Deltarune, I thought that by doing the pacifist or genocide run you basically were chosing between Ralsei's and Susie's point of view, and then the story would develop different.
I love to play pacifist in both undertale and Deltarune, I never wanted to do genocide run actually, but im not a big fun of forcing you to be a pacifist...
As I said, maybe the "your choices don't matter" thing becomes really important, it has potential for an interesting plot theme, like: some horrible thing happens and you couldn't did absolutly anything to avoid it, or stuff like that.

Doing the pacifist/genocide paths again would be redundant. Undertale already exists, there's no need to make it again. I like the idea of the sequel taking the same theme and looking at it entirely differently. The whole game is structured around having no choice, of playing a part you don't want to, being caged, chained, tied to the inevitable, and I think it's really interesting.

It's not a genocide route. Its more of an evil route. Genocide means that you kill a large group of people. While in deltarune, you don't kill anyone. (Except berdly but that's not genocide)

In Chapter 1, You've got to keep Susie's rudeness and crudeness higher than 100. Also you got to get max TP in susie vs lancer fight before susie's final attack. Also keep ralsei's kindness low by not using the acts that include him or is done by him. No sparing, no pacifing, no use of kindness and compationate action, Just Pure Dark Genocide.
Also for Susie before her fight against lancer, her rudeness and crudeness got to be as high as possible.

This does make a lot of sense. The fact that Chara said 'Let us erase this pointless world and move to the next' is already huge foreshadowing. The timeline probably did originate from the genocide route because at the begging we are at 'the contact' part of the game (aka the beginning when you first boot the game up) we see a soul, our soul, Frisks soul that we sold to Chara. And we can even see that the person talking to us at 'the contact' part of the game speaks a lot like Chara. And we were probably not making a vessel for us. Did you see how all of the body parts for our vessel looked a lot like Chara's parts? We were probably constructing Chara's vessel for this world.
Kris is likely the chara(pre death) of the deltarune universe.

The reason Undertale was fun was because being peaceful was a choice not mandatory.
Sure, but do you really think that Toby does not has something in mind? He knows what you expect after playing Undertale, a game so exploited that it's difficult to surprise the public now. And since he commented that this was the story he really wanted to tell, Deltarune style smells like manifest. If the game points out TWICE that your decisions do not matter in the very first minutes of the gameplay, it couldn't be anecdotal. It makes you consider all the learned in Undertale before, and expect a plotwist where in your hands fall some important decision, or in contrast a future event that you can not avoid. And it could be none. A story which the main character reveals to the player a internal conflict may explore a interference between player, avatar and game.
Dishonored has the other problem, it's got a 'pacifist' route too where you can beat the whole entire game without needing to fight a single enemy, but the superpowers for combat only are just too fun to use so everyone plays through it by genocide by the end at least once blowing everything up. I like how Pacifist in Undertale though is more funner since it offers more gameplay choices and interactions with the dialogue and the game feels like it rewards you for trying different playstyles.

Yeah, not the great writing, the captivating characters, the great battle system, the throwback to earthbound and, most of all the amazing soundtrack. No, it was fun because you could choose to be peaceful - despite the game clearly being aware that most players would invariably pursue both routes, referencing this fact with its time-travelling character. God knows that it is impossible to have a fully scripted work of art be fun and engaging despite taking in no input from the audience. What is a book?

Lack of choice, when in this context - the existence of undertale and the tropes that game played with - is more than enough to be able to subvert medium conventions and Toby will most certainly take great advantage of that with his writing. Pacifist is not mandatory, it is being reframed in contrast with the previous' game paradigm and actually pushing the envelope forward. Toby obviously cares enough about his work to acknowledge this. I don't know why fans are so quick to assume it won't be the same. If choices were significant in Undertale, don't you think not having them in this game as much might have a more interesting twist to it? Making another sequel to Undertale would just take away from the point of what made the game special in the first place. Not everything has to be like the original to be good.

2. Genocide isnt impossible, it just means you wont save anyone and get a 0% act rate, which is possible and the new way of doing it since you cant cill anyone and get exp
You definitely can't get a 0% ACT rate, that's what the whole bit about K.Round was, he literally heals himself too often for you to win by FIGHTing so you have to ACT to knock off the crown. It could still be like... certain exceptions are made, like in Undertale you don't kill Monster Kid, you just don't spare him.
But yeah, I think we should keep our reservations about the consequences choices may or may not have down the road, it seems like the first chapter of any story couldn't have maaajor upsets because they still have to make it to the end of the game somehow. Who knows if Toby will stick to his word about only having one ending?

the Dark world is where your choices does matter...and the only thing different is you can't kill anybody...but you can still be described as a bad person if you defeated the enemies...that triggers the ending where the King sleeps...while the pacifist ending if you killed nobody or susie killed nobody...then you will get the ending where the king was overthrown...

The choices don't matter... yet! This is only the first chapter, after all. Who rules that world is decided by our choices, meaning that where things go from here has the potential to go down two very different routes.
My thought is that the idea of choices not mattering will be challenged repeatedly as the game progresses, to the point that the character design made at the start will actually come into play in the finale.
We are talking about Toby here, even if there's only one ending, who knows what ending will be or how it will play out.
Maybe he said 1 ending but your choices change something about it.
