Everyone should visit this short and straight to the point video every 2 months of their breastfeeding journey. I checked in after 3 months and realized some silly mistakes I made. Thanks for this!
I have been using my pump incorrectly. Thank you for explaining. I was hitting the wave button for the whole pump session on my spectra. My flow slowed down this week but is back! Thanks again.
I have 4 pumps and the Spectra is my favorite. I had the lactation nurse help me when my baby was in the NICU. I had to go up in size of the flange cause it hurt when I pumped. I agree with all these tips 👌 I also noticed that when the membranes got old my pump wouldn't suction at all!!!
I bought new membranes today for my pump I hope it helps I get was doing really well pumping and now it’s like my breast aren’t reacting the same to the pump
This video is SO helpful. I had my first 3 years ago and did zero research when it came to breastfeeding (biggest mistake ever). My son wasn't latching properly so I ended up exclusively pumping and unfortunately became an under supplier and had to stop at 4 months after completely losing my supply. I was so upset. I'm now doing all the research I can in preparation for #2. You explained everything so well, and I definitely made some of these mistakes! Thank you so much for this.
You saved me money I was going to buy a new one I thought maybe it was to old all I had to do was change those white things! I’m so thankful for this video I swear.
Thank you , thank you , thank you !!! I can only express my deepest gratitude. I was beside myself trying to figure out why my milk supply all of a sudden started to dwindle and disappear then I found this video. My breast shield size had changed and I had no clue that could even happen. Feel silly now but thank you saved my supply and sanity .
I am SO happy to hear this! I’m glad you found a solution ans I hope you’re able to meet your goals 💕 thank you so much for your kind words. I so appreciate it. Good luck!
Thank you so much for posting this. I just had a baby after 12 years and breastfeeding for the first time cause I didn't do it with my first baby. This is so helpful.
It’s so weird, I had the same story except it was a second baby after 11yrs. Wow. I didn’t want to breastfeed with my first either, so first time breast feeding here too! 🙌
My insurance didnt cover one and I could not afford a new one. My nephews mom gave me her medela and it has worked great for me. My son is only a month old and I have like 200 6oz bags if milk in my freezer and get 4 or 5 more every day. I think amount of milk you get depends a lot more on the person than the pumo
I’m so glad I came across your video!!! I think I need a bigger flange and to swap out my membrane on my Medela pump. My nipples are hitting the side of the flange and they feel raw.
Thank you for this video. I'm saving it to my Baby prep playlist so I can refer back to it as needed. You're channel is giving me a lot of peace of mind for when baby comes!
Pumping is a whole other class I feel like! In the 2 hour breastfeeding class I teach, I can never cover much pumping stuff after getting to just the basics of breastfeeding. More pumping videos to come 😉
Thank you so much for the information! You made me so happy! I have the "Medela Pump in Style," which has large circular yellow membranes instead of duck bills. I had no idea I was supposed to change the membranes. I have a 6 month old baby that I breast feed and pump. Recently, I noticed I was barely getting any milk out during pumping. What normally took 20 minutes to pump suddenly took well over an hour. I started to get depressed that perhaps my supply was drying up. Then I came across this video. The manual for my pump didn't mention anything about replacing parts. After watching this video, I went onto medela's website where they do indeed say to change the membranes every 3 to 6 months. Why don't they put that in the manual?! I ordered new membranes and now I'm pumping just fine once again. If not for your video, I would have given up pumping and likely breast feeding as my baby tends to fuss, so I would have assumed my supply was lacking when it really wasn't. Thank you so much! I love your style too.
Tysm🙏🏼❤I needed to know the difference between let down vs expression and ended up considering that I may need larger flanges...Also my Medela in style has "container holders" but no place for the valves? Idk...I already had the hardest time getting the tubing to coordinate. Thanks again!
Hi Shauntae! Great questions. We cover everything you need to know about pumping in our signature program for working moms. Do you want to know how to apply to join us?
I know that when you first give birth, it's recommended to pump to build a supply. My only question is this: once the baby has learned the game and is getting full feeds every time, is there a need to pump anymore (unless you're bottle-feeding pumped milk for various reasons)? Also...when you're pumping in those first few weeks to establish a supply, what do you do with the milk you've produced? I've heard many moms say that they built a freezer stash but never ended up using it? Do you bottle-feed it to baby? Won't that hurt your own supply if you're not getting baby at the breast? Sorry, I threw a lot of questions at you!!! I'd appreciate your help because not knowing how to navigate pumping really halted my breastfeeding journey...
Nice job. **I'm a First time mom. I just set up my machine and turned it on so I decided to go on a UA-cam marathon to learn about my Medela Symphony.. I saw your video and I'm glad I clicked. Everything you said made sense, and tysm for explaining the flange sizes and what's supposed to and not supposed to happen. I feel more confident about using both my electric and manual pumps now. Ty xoxo
I can never get milk out on the let down set up. I always wait for the two minutes then it changes automatically to expression mode and I still have to wait 5-10 min to start seeing milk. Maybe I have low production. I have a Medela!
I’m the same! I fall between a medela 27mm and 30mm. I just use both and rotate between the two. Haha I never knew my nipples were so particular until I started pumping 🤷🏻♀️
best I've seen yet. I've seen alot of videos of "expert" giving out incorrect info based on experience while some lacaction experts don't seem to give a thorough info. Im culprit on almost all you've mentioned. On #2 regarding flanges. What do you do if your nipple rubs against the flange but also cover the areola and goes right in?
I'm noticing an uneven breast size ever since I've started pumping (which is almost a month now). My left breast is smaller than my right and it also produces less milk than the right. While pumping, the left breast hurts like crazy. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. I think, the pump tends to suck in too much skin (only on the left breast) and it hurts so much. I dread pumping every time just because of this. Also, how do I fix this uneven milk supply?
Hi! So, I've been producing low basically since my son was born 7 weeks ago. I got a Medela Pump In Style (the new one). When measured, I found I had to get the smallest size Medela sells for the flange which was 21mm. But I actually was on the lower side of that. They're small. So I used the 21mm and have had pain since day 1 and developed a ring where the nipple meets the areola as well as the tips of the nips are white (not a bleb...it's like the size of a pen cap...basically the whole tip). As it was so painful, I decided to try the 24 the kit came with for awhile to see if the pain lessened. It didn't and I used it for a couple of weeks before buying the 27 to give that a try. Same thing. I went to an LC and she said (after I told her the whole story) that the white ring means I'm using too small of a flange and I should use the 24. I've been using that size since and there was no improvement still (after 2 weeks now). I then went to a Facebook group specific to exclusively pumping mamas. The moderators size people if asked. I messaged one and asked. After sending her pics and a short video while using the 21mm as she requested, she advised I get a 17 for one side and 19 for the other. I'm confused because I was told that the ring indicates too small of a flange. I just bought the iKare pump off Amazon the other day and began using it yesterday. No pain! But they only have a 24 and 27 flange. I'm using the 24 because it's what the first LC advised. I finally have no pain! But I still have no idea what size flange I should be using. The LC said to use 24, which is clearly wrong but the moderator who sizes hundreds of people, said I need much smaller. I just want to increase what I'm putting out (about 1oz total per pump - every 2 hours). I want to make enough for my baby before his instinct goes away to dive and peck for my boobs. Oh, also, after seeing the LC, she had other tips and when I did those things, my supply bombed big time and it's taken me two weeks to get halfway to where I was and I haven't leaked since seeing her either. I need help and I have no idea what to do at this point.
I know it’s 2 months later and I hope your milk supply is still going. What I see from your comment is a huge amount of anxiety combined with lack of trust towards lactation professionals. That will diminish anyone’s milk supply. Let go of expectations. If you get milk fine, if you don’t, fine again. Look into supplementing with an organic formula like HIPP, not the crap we have in the US. If your flange fits,(which means the nipple itself should not be rubbing against the flange and a couple mm of the aureole should go in as well), then you’re fine. Set the pump on massage mode for a couple of minutes, then express mode at low setting. On my spectra that’s between 2-4 depending on your comfort level. If it hurts, make it lower and just relax. Whatever you get out is better than nothing. While pumping, tug a little bit on the flange like a baby’s mouth would. Not too much otherwise the flange will fall out. In general, be very gentle while pumping and use a booby cream before putting the flange on. If you don’t use a lubricant you’ll get the same effect as a rug burn on your nipple. Ouch Try to pump in a quiet room ( I pump in my closet), dim light, some calming music you enjoy and make sure no one interrupts you. Apply some moist heat before pumping and massage your breast for a few minutes. A warm wet wash cloth will work. I think the main milk supply killer is our anxiety and expectations of how much we should produce. Any amount of breast milk is better than none. So if you express 2 ounces/day is still better than nothing ❤️
I used to pump when my son was till 2 months then I stopped but I want to start again because I need to go back to school and I want to build a stash. How do I get a let down again?
Thank you for this very helpful video! I will certainly use these tips as I am new to pumping. Three of the tips were completely new to me, and I'm sure they will save me from frustration. I appreciate it! Glad to have found your channel & website. 😁👍
@@NewLittleLife Thank you so much!! I appreciate the offer & support. My 4th baby is due any day, and although I exclusively breastfed my first 3 babies, I never pumped. So this is definitely a new endeavor! Thank you for being a resource! All the best to you & your family. I'll let you know if & when I have questions. :)
Hi! Can you elaborate on point #4? Or do you have a video that explains this better? I tend to like the stronger suctions.. I am an overproducer, so sometimes I am super full & feel like I need to get the milk out really fast... but I want to know what the best way is to maximize my milk output without causing damage. Or when I see my supply start to dip - what I can do to help with that. Thanks!
Hi Allison, I’ve got extremely sensitive nipples and the spectra hurt like mad even on L2. Is the medela more gentle? My flange size is correct as assessed by my lactation consultant
I received used Spectra and Medela pumps. Both seem to work and I like the closed system of the Spectra but now I'm not sure if I should just get a new one from insurance or try these used ones first! The Medela came with lots of bottles and new tubing but the Spectra I would need to buy extra bottles for. Also not sure what flange sizes will work as I'm still 2-3 weeks from delivery. I appreciate the tips but not sure what to do!
You can keep one month in the freezer, if you dont have plastic bags you can use glass container and ones you take it out it must be used because nutrition will be gonne .. good luck 😘
Michaela is very wrong. You can store in the freezer that is connected to your refrigerator for up to 6 months. You can store in a separate DEEP freezer for up to one year. Once you take milk out of the freezer you have 24 hours to use it
6 months up to one year ?? Who told you this bullshit??... 6 months is long even for meat. I was told one month at maternité but I do'nt need full freezer, so never kept it frozen for more then 2 weeks.
Thanks for the info.. very useful.. I have one more doubt regarding pumping. As my baby is not latching on me directly due to my flat nipples I m only pumping and feeding the baby.. I hope there's no issue doing this way?
Got a pump free through INS, the flanges are not a good fit, it comes with 3 sizes, it didn't come with the membrane that fit over the flange that helps fitting. The pumping has no suction and I checked everything and it was all connected, it did not even pull my nipple onto the flange, not even the smallest one. It was bust, had to go out and by a hand pump in order to pump. The pump I got for free is the motif brand.
There’s a video on my channel on how to set up and use the motif Luna pump. Make sure it’s set up right and if it’s still not working, contact the company!
Thank you for the video,, i thought my pump is not working only to see my mistake is not putting that white thing inside before pumping( the one you said that it needs to be changed time to time) thank you for saving me🥰🥰🥰
Oh man. I pumped for 7 months on the same duck bills years ago. Technically I had two pumps that I used upstairs/downstairs, so I guess it didn't get used quite as badly as 7 months...but I had no idea I had to change them out.
This is great! Totally agree with everything you said! I'm almost at a year now with baby #2, and I was curious to see if you had any advice that I didn't already know. Quick tip: on one side, I'm between flange sizes 24mm and 28mm ( spectra ), maymom makes 2 sizes in between that - 25mm and 27mm.
In a closed pump system, there’s a barrier between the milk and the motor, for example the Spectra has a back flow protector to stop milk from going up the tubing. As far as a pump, it depends on many things. How often will you be pumping? Do you need something portable? What’s your budget?
I only use the let down mode through out my pumping session because that’s the only way I can collect more milk . Can you please tell me will my baby still get all the milk content including fats if I do this ? I will really appreciate if you respond. Thank you
I love you! About the suction. I was told I should use the strongest suction I could tolerate. So I’ve been using the Bella baby pump suctioning on 5 or 6 and now my right nipple hurts like crazy I probably have a tear 🙄 and it’a my good side and most frequently used side 😩 also my flanges are too big and it’s been a hunt for me to find my right flange size. Anyways, so I absolutely need to go up to the highest suction I can tolerate? Even when using the wrong flange? Should I just buy a new pump? The inserts aren’t the best
Ekk! So I think the advice was well intended but perhaps poorly worded 🙈 you should find that sweet spot where you have a strong suction that’s COMFORTABLE and milk is flowing good. Too light suction won’t do much, and too strong suction will cause damage. So.. probably turn it down. :) BellaBaby should be pretty easy to find the right flange size. What size do you need and I’ll help you find it! It’s super important to use the right size when pumping.
Oh wow lol now I know why I had so much trouble...My second is coming on the 7th! Now I am more prepared, thanks a billion. Membranes blew my mind lol I may or may not have had the membrane on my medela 🤣 Now I have a free one through insurance
I have a Medela pump in style that I used 3 years ago with my first baby. My insurance won't cover it this time. Should I get a manual instead to get better results than using the first one? What parts should I replace if it's mine?
Is it ok to get a rechargeable pump as your main and only pump? I really like the idea of a portable pump. Am I better off getting a medela or spectra with a battery pack? I’m loving what I see about the Motif duo. Thoughts?
my areola would rub harshly on the flange & it would burn 😩 i read we can “grease” it up with olive oil & oh my gosh it feels so much better. i don’t dread having to pump anymore. however, idk if i’m using the correct flange. i have the medela “pump in style” breast pump
Hi there! Thanks for the tips, I didn't know you needed to replace the membranes, so will do that! For the Medela, do the tubes need to be replaced as well?
Hey! Just found your channel. I’m trying to learn everything I can about breastfeeding before my baby gets here, and I have a question after reading the article about ‘when to start pumping’. My husband is very interested in being able to help with feeding the baby, so I told him I’d be able to pump some milk for him to give to the baby in a bottle. I work from home so other than having milk for bottles for my husband to feed him, I really don’t have a need for a huge freezer stash. But when is it ok to start pumping just enough for him to help? We planned on trying the first years breastflow bottles early on to get the baby used to both breast and bottle...but if this is truly a bad idea I’ll wait it out. Thank you!
Great question! It’s recommended that you wait until breastfeeding and your milk supply is well establish before introducing the pump. Usually about 4-6 weeks. Also that long for introducing a bottle too. In my experience, there are MANY other ways for dad to bond with the baby and help mom other than feeding! Skin to skin is a great one, nighttime diaper changes, making sure you’re hydrated and well fed. Most husbands mean well and want to help with the feeding, but usually it’s even MORE work for moms like you who stay home to have to pump and then do all the bottle stuff. If it’s super important to your husband, maybe have a conversation and see what the motivations is. If it’s to help you, that actually may not be the case realistically :) This question is actually a video in my que soon as many moms have this!! Good luck on your upcoming little one!
You also never know how breastfeeding will go so its good to be ready for everything. If baby has latch issues consider tongue ties by an expert in specifically diagnosing it.
I am exclusively pumping and just started. I’m 3wpp. I’m struggling figuring out the flange size. I have flat nipples and large nipple/areolas but small breasts. It’s difficult to figure out if my nipple is in there correctly. I an using a 24. I’ve tried 27 and felt more comfortable but seemed to have more areola in it. With the 24 i see the nipple coming through but there is some areola coming into the flange and scraping the sides. Not sure if that is right or not. My nipples are ultra sensitive while using both of those sizes too. Any suggestions?
Aaahh...ffs, I am only in my first trimester & I’m already freaking out about how overcomplicated all this stuff is made out to be. Just gonna wing it & hope my little peanut doesn’t starve.
You'll be fine, do some research but don't stress about it. My little one is 8 weeks old and has never had a problem feeding. He's taken multiple different bottles, gone back and forth between breast and nipple shield, never cared if it's expressed milk or formula or straight from the boob.
I know this comment is kind of old but im a ftm who also winged it and my baby is fine! I do wish I had done more Kegels, perenium massage, and freezer meal prep. The first month I did nothing but sit on the couch and nurse and not sleep. Good luck with your delivery and everything!
I'm strictly breast feeding and want to start pumping now that she's 6 weeks. I want to up my Supply a bit to build a freezer stash.. How often should I pump?
Allison Murakami what I don’t understand is the let down part. I just got the haakaa tired it after baby was done feeding but does this mean I have no milk. Or not doing it right??
How do I express all my milk without needing to increase the suction setting? With my son I’d have it close to the highest setting because I knew all my milk wasn’t out but it would no longer come out through pumping unless I increased the setting high.
I know it’s been 8 months but someone may read that and have the same question... every 10 min switch back to the let down mode. It’ll send signals to the boob that baby(pump) is trying to get more milk snd it will send another let down. Pump with the expression setting for ten min then hit the let down mode again the slow fast suctions. I can get three let down every pump. Every ten min or around ten min I can get a let down every single time sometimes 4!
@@Birkaaaaa omg thank you so much! My baby’s 2 months old now and I’m running into that issue. Dumb question but is the let down mode the slower mode or the faster ones?
As an IBCLC, there are three things in here that are not quite correct. One: comparing pumps for yourself with two different babies is not an equal comparison. It is well known that what occurs in the first three days after birth has a profound effect on the rest of the breastfeeding adventure. This includes pumps and their effectiveness. Two: suction volume and when it is applied IS important, as well as rate of pumping cycle. Babies feed at about 1 suck per minute once letdown has occurred. Pumps that slow below that when vacuum is up to optimal levels (160 mmhg) cannot maintain supply especially if baby is not nursing well 70% of the time and/or mom is pump dependent. Mothers who have established a higher volume and who are pumping “recreationally” are not as dependent on the effectiveness of the pump to produce the needed pump speed and vacuums. Three: duckbill valves such as are on most pumps DO indeed need replacing frequently due to the nature of silicone and other soft plastics. When vacuum is applied to a soft substance, the material stretches. This is similar to the way holes in nipples stretch over time and milk flows more freely with less work from the baby. The Medela membranes only require replacement if they tear (which can happen with too vigorous remove from the yellow valve plate under the membrane. The yellow valve can crack and require placement if jammed into the base of the pumping setup and then removed forcefully. There is no need to jam this on. Just gentle pressure. Fourth: (I know I said three but there’s two more things here. Vacuum pressures need to be strong enough to empty the breast quickly. Low pressures mean a need for more letdowns and more time. A properly adjusted pump should empty the breast in 8-10 minutes for most moms. Fifth: if using a hands free to pump, make sure the breasts are not compressed into the flanges so as to block ducts.
Jane Kershaw Thank you for this. I’m an underproducer with a baby who has oral motor issues. I have a Spectra S2 and Medela PISA and neither empty me completely or efficiently. I have to pump for 30 minutes and then hand express. I cannot even feel the suction on their highest settings and definitely need something more powerful and faster but have no idea what to choose. Do you have a recommendation? I use 15mm flanges (sized by an IBCLC, very comfortable) and have the conversion kits to make them fit multiple pumps. I produce fewer than 3oz combined every pump (more like 1-1.5oz) and pump about 8 times per day.
Hi There! Thank you for this info. I am confused however about duck bills and membranes. I don’t know what they are. I have a Medela Pump n Style fit flex. The parts look different from the Medela you recommend. I don’t think my pump has those parts. Or have I been using my pump incorrectly this whole time?
The new Medela pump in style max flow (which I think is what you’re referring to) has a different set up. The membrane is part of the back flow protector. There’s another video on the channel about that pump if you need clarification!
Thanks for your video, it is really useful. I have a (probably) silly question but forgive me, I would rather ask than being in doubt: So, you say the size of the flange is important and has to fit the nipple and part of the areola. How do I know which size to go for when I'm buying the product and obviously it is sealed in a box? Thanks again. First time with my 1st daughter I stopped breastfeeding after 3.5 weeks, now expecting another one and I'm trying to prepare myself, learning from what I've done wrong. x
Great question!! You can get a good estimate by measuring, then really customise after you get going :) www.medela.us/breastfeeding/articles/breast-shield-sizing-how-to-get-the-best-fit
She said if the nipple goes all the way to the back it's too small...(me) and if it takes the whole deal you need a bigger size. How can mine be both at the same time?
Thank you so much! I love people like you 🤣 congrats on your upcoming delivery! Let me know if there’s more information that would be helpful for you. Good luck!
What if you use the same pump that you used for your first baby on your second baby letter a year difference an age is that considered used too old to be effective???
I’m sure it still works, maybe just keep an eye on it though. If you notice you’re not getting as much as you think you should be, I’d think about maybe replacing it. If your insurance covers a breast pump though, just get a new one!
Ive been doing it wrong this whole time and crying I wasn’t producing enough LOL. I produced way more just after watching this when I pumped. Oops lol 😅
Help help help. I’m a nicu mom and my baby came home after 4 months. I’ve been so busy I started pumping less and now my milk has gone away. I still want to pump for her, she’s not a breastfeeding baby so I’m pumping exclusively. I don’t want to stop the process but I feel like I’m not getting any milk out. I know this video is old but any ideas? Food etc
Start pumping again! It’s all about supply and demand. Even if it’s small amounts, stay consistent and it will come back! There’s a recent video on relactation on the channel you might like as well.
Wow, I wasn’t changing the valve...no wonder. But I will say, I got the largest size cup and my nipple was still too big and rubbing the the sides. What do you do when this happens??
I exclusively pumped for 6 months with my spectra for my first. I was planning to just buy new parts and continue to use the same machine. After hearing not to buy used.. (even tho I'm the one who used it) Should I buy a new spectra?
That is quite a bit of use on the motor, and 5 years it a bit of time passed! I would personally get a new one to ensure you don’t struggle with milk supply due to a pump problem.
My baby is 2 weeks old and she is on formula. I was able to breastfeed her only for 4 days. Now whenever I am trying to breastfeed her, she get frustrated. I really wanna feed her with my own milk but my milk supply also decreased. Please any tips for me. I am really worried about my baby ‘s healthy development.
You need help from your local lactation consultant! That’s more than I can help with via online. Call the place your delivered or your doctor and see what lactation resources are available to you. Good lock!
Once you figure out what works for you and reevaluate once in awhile to check for changes, it's not too bad. I pumped for over a year when returning to work with my two oldest.
She does need to lean forward a little so that the milk flows into the bottles and doesn't flow back and leak out the bottom of the flanges. One thing I hate about pumping.
Thanks for this! It’s really helpful. I just have a question which I didn’t find on Spectra’s website. How long is the lifespan of a pump? You mentioned that old ones aren’t as effective anymore. I have the Spectra 9 Plus which I got brand new and been using it for 1 and a half year already. I regularly change the flange, valve and membrane every 3 months, but still noticed that my milk supply is lower now. I pump 1-2 times a day. Should I replace my pump already or maybe I just have less milk now after more than a year of pumping? Thank you.
That’s tricky. You likely do have less supply than the first year, are you feeding and pumping just as much as you used to? If your baby has slowed down at all that’d be my first guess. I think most pumps are under warranty for a year.. but they’ll wear faster with daily use vs occasional use. Does that help at all?
@@NewLittleLife My LO does feed less now and I pump less now as well since she’s eating solids already. And probably since it’s been 18 months, too. Thanks for replying! :)

That last one - I just changed mine after 6 months after being frustrated with my pump. LAWDDD
I i
I have been using my pump incorrectly. Thank you for explaining. I was hitting the wave button for the whole pump session on my spectra. My flow slowed down this week but is back! Thanks again.
Ive been doing the same 🤦
Wait we’re not supposed to? I have the spectra, I shouldn’t hit the wave button?
You’re welcome Brittany! Good luck this next time around 👍🏼
You saved me money I was going to buy a new one I thought maybe it was to old all I had to do was change those white things! I’m so thankful for this video I swear.
Yay!! I’m so glad :)
Good luck!
I never knew the membranes needed to be replaced!! Super helpful video. Thank you so much.
You bet! Thanks Lucy!
Thank you so much for posting this. I just had a baby after 12 years and breastfeeding for the first time cause I didn't do it with my first baby. This is so helpful.
Me too!!!! 12 years later....1st time breastfeeding. Congrats momma!!
@Regina Patrice I was but girl I eat alot of fast food and just gaining weight as long as u eat healthy and alot of water !
I’m so glad I came across your video!!! I think I need a bigger flange and to swap out my membrane on my Medela pump. My nipples are hitting the side of the flange and they feel raw.
Same 😫
Thank you for this video. I'm saving it to my Baby prep playlist so I can refer back to it as needed. You're channel is giving me a lot of peace of mind for when baby comes!
Very informative. I just took a breast feeding class and we didn't learn any of this. Thank you!
Pumping is a whole other class I feel like! In the 2 hour breastfeeding class I teach, I can never cover much pumping stuff after getting to just the basics of breastfeeding. More pumping videos to come 😉
I had no idea what the let down button was until I watched this...I feel dumb lol thank you!!!
I’m SO happy you found the problem and you can continue!! That makes my heart so happy!!!!
My favorite hack is using medela parts with spectra parts you can buy a conversion kit 👌❤️
Yep, hoping that when I call my insurance, that they have a vendor that offers Spectra this time. But I have a lot of medela parts
I like using a silicone nipple shield, just cut the top off, helps not let get the nipple pull so much in the flange
You may need smaller flanges :)
Super good idea!!
Omg thank you I'm going to go get my Spectra out of my storage closet now. I'm going to give this a try again
You got this!!! Spectra is a great pump :)
You got this mama!
Thank you for the info! I learned a lot more from this video than I did from the lactician in the Nicu!
I messed up my supply in the beggining by not being able to find the right flange size. I was like Goldilocks, nothing was just right.
I’m the same! I fall between a medela 27mm and 30mm. I just use both and rotate between the two. Haha I never knew my nipples were so particular until I started pumping 🤷🏻♀️
I find the little back flow valve to create a lighter suction. Like hardly anything comes out with it. So I ditched it. No issues
best I've seen yet.
Same :/
Use nipple balm on the tube of the flange. So much more comfy
Now I probably know why it hurts so much when I'm pumping, thank you! 😁
Spectra user since the birth of my baby. Perfect for my nippie it doesnt hurt and it sucks a lot of my breastmilk.
Did you figure out how to solve the problem? If one side is bigger, I was just thinking that you can use a bigger flange on that side only.
Medela includes 2 extra suctions...I got 2 extra on the starter kit from hospital and 2 extra when I got new pump from insurance company
Ouch
Try to pump in a quiet room ( I pump in my closet), dim light, some calming music you enjoy and make sure no one interrupts you.
You always have a letdown , 3 weeks before returning pump 15 minutes after you breastfeed as many times as you nurse baby
Thank you for this very helpful video! I will certainly use these tips as I am new to pumping. Three of the tips were completely new to me, and I'm sure they will save me from frustration. I appreciate it! Glad to have found your channel & website. 😁👍
So glad to hear it! I’m sure there’s more things that may come up, so don’t hesitate to reach out if you need anything :)
Thanks a lot for all the information 😊
Thanks!
Hahaha “first of all… ouch” lol 😂
Hi Allison, I’ve got extremely sensitive nipples and the spectra hurt like mad even on L2. Is the medela more gentle? My flange size is correct as assessed by my lactation consultant
A good suction is a must in order to even get any milk out!
Hi, I am fromn the Mexico city. I need informatiion about this product
Interesting...I would switch it to expression mode immediately to get things started
How to store and use freezed milk. Like if i keep the milk in freeze how long i can use it in a day out?
6 months is correcr
Michaela Kainova Alex is correct I’ve had 3 babies and a different lactation counselor with each baby that told me the exact same thing she said
Thanks for the info.. very useful.. I have one more doubt regarding pumping. As my baby is not latching on me directly due to my flat nipples I m only pumping and feeding the baby.. I hope there's no issue doing this way?
What about breat pain. Not nipple pain. Can the wrong size flange make them hurt?
Thank you!!! 🙌
Thank you for the video,, i thought my pump is not working only to see my mistake is not putting that white thing inside before pumping( the one you said that it needs to be changed time to time) thank you for saving me🥰🥰🥰
Yay!! So glad it was just a simple fix for you 💕
Oh man. I pumped for 7 months on the same duck bills years ago. Technically I had two pumps that I used upstairs/downstairs, so I guess it didn't get used quite as badly as 7 months...but I had no idea I had to change them out.
Mine tore! So I knew it was time to get new ones .. it tore at 2.5 months
This is great! Totally agree with everything you said! I'm almost at a year now with baby #2, and I was curious to see if you had any advice that I didn't already know.
Quick tip: on one side, I'm between flange sizes 24mm and 28mm ( spectra ), maymom makes 2 sizes in between that - 25mm and 27mm.
what is an open or closed pump system ? our insurance in Asia doesn't cover any of this....FTM what should i get?
In a closed pump system, there’s a barrier between the milk and the motor, for example the Spectra has a back flow protector to stop milk from going up the tubing.
As far as a pump, it depends on many things. How often will you be pumping? Do you need something portable? What’s your budget?
I'm using a borrowed pump from WIC, how can I get my health insurance to pay for a new pump? Thank you!
Just call them and ask!
On the spectra pump, do we replace the silicone circle (diagram?) At the same time we replace the valve?
That one is not as important to change out, just replace occasionally :)
I only use the let down mode through out my pumping session because that’s the only way I can collect more milk . Can you please tell me will my baby still get all the milk content including fats if I do this ? I will really appreciate if you respond. Thank you
Brilliant thanks
BellaBaby should be pretty easy to find the right flange size.
Good luck to you!!! 💕
Thoughts?
You bet. Go with a rechargeable pump for sure if you can!
my areola would rub harshly on the flange & it would burn 😩 i read we can “grease” it up with olive oil & oh my gosh it feels so much better. i don’t dread having to pump anymore. however, idk if i’m using the correct flange.
i have the medela “pump in style” breast pump
Thank You for this video! Very helpful.
My aerola is completely covered in the 24mm flange. Do I need a bigger size?
We don’t really worry about the areola. The nipple is the only measurement we need to make sure if fitted correctly.
What cause milk to enter the motor of the Medela mini electric pump?
It's an open system. So milk can get into the motor easily. Closed systems are better and last a little longer.
You may be able to find back flo protectors for it!
Hi there! Thanks for the tips, I didn't know you needed to replace the membranes, so will do that! For the Medela, do the tubes need to be replaced as well?
They shouldn’t, but if they come in a replacement kit you might as well.
So useful
Can't believe i was using the Express button backwards the whole time🤦🏾♀️
YOURE NOT ALONE! 🙈
Sad thing was I never used it
Thank you! I will be purchasing one.
If it’s to help you, that actually may not be the case realistically :)
This question is actually a video in my que soon as many moms have this!! Good luck on your upcoming little one!
@@NewLittleLife Thanks so much!
You also never know how breastfeeding will go so its good to be ready for everything. If baby has latch issues consider tongue ties by an expert in specifically diagnosing it.
My babies had a hard time latching and I pumped from the beginning to help establish supply. I pumped for numerous months with each child
My milk supply is very low. I'm doing mix feeding coz baby cries if not satisfied wd my milk. Is pumping necessary even I'm doing unli latch
These tips are so helpful!
Any recommendations for manual pumps?
Just a question... Why does a "tired" valve affect the milk supply?
It effects the suction of the pump which can lead to the breast not being emptied as much as it needs to be
I am exclusively pumping and just started.
What are they measuring? Have you tried a smaller one than 24? Just curious!
Aaahh...ffs, I am only in my first trimester & I’m already freaking out about how overcomplicated all this stuff is made out to be. Just gonna wing it & hope my little peanut doesn’t starve.
Brooke G most hospitals have lactation consultants that you can see before and after birth. They should be able to help you :)
Start with adding one pump in a day and go from there. Usually the morning is when moms have the most milk to spare or during a long nap!
Try using a Haaka on the other breast your baby isn’t feeding on. I was able to build a supply without actually pumping!
Allison Murakami what I don’t understand is the let down part. I just got the haakaa tired it after baby was done feeding but does this mean I have no milk. Or not doing it right??
@@isamarrodriguez41 put haakaa on opposite side while baby is feeding at same time. You should be able to collect that way.
@@LiveLifeMichele the let down is the fast suction. 70 in Spectra S1
Do you go back to the first setting after your milk stops flowing while waiting for the next letdown?
You sure can! Switching up the settings is a great idea to help another let down
If my dog heard the sound of the pump he would jump all over me 🤣🤣🤣
Great video!!
I have the spectra and absolutely love it works perfect for me
As an IBCLC, there are three things in here that are not quite correct.
Can we bottle feed newborns?
rakesh dalal yes you can. I have bottle feed my baby since she was two days old. :)
Can
Which is the best pump ameda, lansoh?,spectra ?
D Escobar spectra!!!!!
How do u prevent getting mastitis?
Thanks for your video, it is really useful. I have a (probably) silly question but forgive me, I would rather ask than being in doubt: So, you say the size of the flange is important and has to fit the nipple and part of the areola. How do I know which size to go for when I'm buying the product and obviously it is sealed in a box? Thanks again. First time with my 1st daughter I stopped breastfeeding after 3.5 weeks, now expecting another one and I'm trying to prepare myself, learning from what I've done wrong. x
Great question!! You can get a good estimate by measuring, then really customise after you get going :)

Oops lol 😅
Oh I’m glad to help a little!! 🙈 What were you doing wrong? Just curious!
What pump and shield size are you using? I’ll see what I can find for you!
@@NewLittleLife spectra S2 30mm flange
I exclusively pumped for 6 months with my spectra for my first. I was planning to just buy new parts and continue to use the same machine. After hearing not to buy used.. (even tho I'm the one who used it) Should I buy a new spectra?
Forgot to mention I pumped about 6 times per day.
I am really worried about my baby

You need help from your local lactation consultant! That’s more than I can help with via online. Call the place your delivered or your doctor and see what lactation resources are available to you. Good lock!
I think whether you breastfeed or use formula your baby will be fine, fed is best. Still consult a lactation consultant though❤️.

Omg pumping sounds so complicated! 😄
There’s a little learning curve for sure! Much easier to feed the baby straight from the tap when available 😉🤱🏽
Once you figure out what works for you and reevaluate once in awhile to check for changes, it's not too bad. I pumped for over a year when returning to work with my two oldest.
nice info thank you!
Great info...passing this along to my girls!
Thanks Doreen!
My wife feels like she has to lean forward in order for it to work? It’s the flange size wrong or somthing?
She does need to lean forward a little so that the milk flows into the bottles and doesn't flow back and leak out the bottom of the flanges. One thing I hate about pumping.
@@kristens7164 thank you
Lol! Ouch. Thanks for the tips

Your milk is also going to be much denser in calories and nutrition by 12-18 mos, so don't be surprised that your supply appears to be going down
@@NewLittleLife My LO does feed less now and I pump less now as well since she’s eating solids already. And probably since it’s been 18 months, too. Thanks for replying! :)
@@zombiedietitian thanks for the info!
