Railfanning the Parade of Trains 2023

- We check out this years version of the NYC Subway Parade of Trains. We see the “Low Gate Jewetts” and the “R1-R9” consist as well as the “BMT Standards” running between Brighton Beach and Kings Highway. Expert commentary on the subway cars by my sidekicks Ian and Neil. Much better behaved crowd this year but there were some incidents. The oppressive humidity didn’t stop the dedicated fans from turning out for this popular event.

The subways I've probably ridden the most are the R46s on the Queens Blvd line in the '70s and '80s. I'd love to ride a fan trip on Lo-Vs on White Plains Road, because that's where I saw them running back in the '50s!
It was very nice meeting you yesterday at Avenue U (38:57)! I was the one with the MTA hat. And I agree even though it was a humid and rainy day, it was still a good one and sime nice whistle action throughout the day. You got a good variety of shots at mutiple stations along the line. Great commentary as always. There were some incidents as you mentioned, but definitely not as bad as lat year. Maybe I will see you again at the 40th Anniversary express lol.
I never got to ride the Standards or the R1/R9s while they were still in active service, and I've never gotten to ride any of the Transit Museum's vintage fan trips, since they weren't running them while I was living on Long Island, and now I'm too far away. At least the museum itself is still alive and well.

I spent my preteen years in a house one block away from Kings Highway station-so I wish to thank Tim, Neil, and Ian for taking me home for a few precious minutes.
Back in the late 50’s, I rode from Grand Central to the Brooklyn Navy Yard under the east river. I Remember how noisy and hot they were. The windows were open and the ride was rough. Something I’ll never forget. Thanks.
I didn’t come to the POT (Parade of Trains) because apparently there were 4 fights at Sheepshead Bay, R32/38 Not running in service and all that stuff.
My first transit ride was on gate cars from Forest Avenue in Ridgewood. Took them to Myrtle and then the Standards on the "Canarsie Line" to 8th Avenue. Our house on Putnam Avenue in Ridgewood backed to the Forest Avenue station and the kitchen window gave a 24/7 view of the train action. Later, it was the Bee Line bus to 179th Jamaica and the R1-R9s either on the E or F, usually the E to Penn Station or "Hudson Terminal".
Long time ago, but it was great fun!

At about @9:16 -- I always wondered what that pulse-ticking sound the R1-R9 cars made was and what machinery caused it. Now I know and I can now make my ascension into Railfanning Heaven because my lifelong prayer as a railfan has finally been answered. Hahahahahahahaha. Seriously, though -- I had searched around and asked what that sound was but I could never get an answer. Keep up the great work!
Thanks for the Subway nostalgia and your staff of experts! The history, details and upcoming change reporting is very interesting and helpful. I recommend 722 Miles by Clifton Hood for further Subway reading.
There is another book that I would highly recommend-it is called “Under the Sidewalks of New York” by Brian J. Cudahy-although I don’t know if it is still in print.
The BMT Standards were built from 1914 til 1924. And they were the most common trains in Brooklyn.

I never considered myself outgoing. Often I do these videos alone as being independent allows me to make many of these.
Great video. I rode them last year Kings Highway to Brighton Beach.
The BMT Standards featured on the video were built in 1917. They were based somewhat on the Cambridge-Dorchester Subway cars in Boston, and, with a few modifications, they would inspire the Staten Island EMUs of 1925, the Broad Street Subway cars in Philadelphia of 1927 and 1938, and the Bridge Line cars of 1936.
Too bad the original subway trains of the Frankford subway and the Broad Street subway lines were junked except for around 3 subway cars of the Broad Street subway in the subway yard in Camden N.J. There are 2 1960 Budd subway cars preserved in a trolley museum somewhere in Pennsylvania.
As you said - the BMT standards were on the Canarsie LL or L train in the 60's and into the 70's. Used to make that noise when starting, Also - they were old and falling apart.
I grew up riding The Standards and The D Triplexes on the Brighton Line. The Lo-V's on the IRT. I always regarded the IND as upstarts.

Tim, you said the "peanut" whistles on the R1-R9s and Standards sounded like the whistles on the New York Central MU cars. Never heard the Central car whistles, so thanks for the info!
381 was part of a group of cars that ran tests on the Sea Beach before the first segment of the IND opened.

@@3985uprr That's the main reason it's still with us. Each of the museum cars has a story to tell. 401 was a schoolcar in Jamaica Yard for a number of years, renumbered 491. IINM it was the first IND car to be restored to operating condition and joined the museum trio (100, 484 and 1575) for special excursions.

Technically Pitkin Yard is a surface level yard, MTA sold the air rights, and Linden Plaza Apartments was built above it.

Where are the r40S slants? Why isn't the museum showing those trains on the parade anymore? I always wanted to r40S slants to be showed around on every parade. I love them.
I think someone needs to sue all the songwriters and publishers of the many 20th century songs that committed the outrage of writing lyrics that referred to Grand Central Terminal as "Grand Central Station." I recommend hiring the NYC law firm of Dewey Cheetum and Howe to lead this effort.
GCT is a terminal station, so therefore it’s a type of station. You know what they are referring to.

Does anyone know what happened to the R32s?
They had one sitting in the yard just south of Brighton Beach but never ran it. It sat until after 4pm and then did the Deadhead back. I spoke with NYCT and confirmed they weren't planning to run it for some reason.
There were 2 of them and 2 R38’s as backup
