The best reason i can give to phlage being good is while the front of the card being a sorcery speed helix sounds bad, the back side being basically a 4 mana recurable inferno titan that gains you life is just incredible
As someone that has been following this deck (and finally built it in paper), this was an awesome vid. My thoughts are that you should probably maindeck blood moon if you're playing the monkey pirate, wheareas Ocelot Pride is better on average. Ragavan is better vs tron & storm as they don't interact at all. Phlage and amped raptor are probably your best cards.
I am speaking from a Timeless player and I know Timeless=/=Modern, but the Ocelot Pride is really a glue for Guide of Souls and Ajani. I am very surprised it wasn’t in your deck. As far as static prison, I wouldn’t be surprised if swords to plowshares is just the better option as a clean answer even if it gives the opponent life when you are trying to be aggro.
28:38 Not an ideal 2 for 1 but you could have galvanic discharged, marked one damage on the thought knot and have the other 2 energy to use for mana and then used one of those to bolt it and then have a energy for colored mana left over to better set up for drawing out.
Love to see more modern content from you. There where some builds in legacy you did where I often thought, that could work in modern too since mostly was legal there.
Yeah, I've been saying this since spoiler season, Not-Dying + Taking-pressure-off-the-board is oddly underestimated. Kroxa usually is a twice as expensive raven's crime. Phlage is reach or removal plus lifegain.
Kroxa has the opponent's choice downside, similar to cards like Vexing Devil or the actually playable Palantir of Orthanc. Those cards are always much worse than they look on the surface, as the opponent obviously gets to pick whichever option is less impactful to them, so you never actually get the mode you "want". They look like modal cards intuitively, but they're the exact opposite. Phlage is, on the other hand, a banger
It's closer to Uro in its Powerlewel. Not Quite as busted as Uro but it will stabilize on its own from a bad position and when your ahead it just ends the game if not properly answered. Kroxa does close to nothing when your behind on the front side and when it comes back it's on blocking duty.Phlage and Uro start attacking gaining life and drawing cards or destroying creatures. Notably on an empty board pflage kills from 18 life in 2 turns.
I noticed you kept playing Raptors into an empty board instead of Ajanis. Why not just play the cat when the chance to hit useless cards like galv blast, wear/tear, or even just a bolt that only goes face is so high? If it's T2 it's likely you don't even have the energy to cast a potential Phlage, and even if you do it's "just" 3 damage face vs the stronger boardstate Ajani creates
I very much enjoy your legacy videos, but it's nice to see you try stuff like this too. I don't really pay attention to modern anymore, but it's fun to see where it is once and a while.
I think like the cat that you opponent play is so much powerful - 2x cats for ajani, extra body in general, great with your other 1 drop - I think its staple card in this deck I would even consider it stronger than monke.
I found you can break amped raptor by loading your deck with powerful 4-5 drops and use early energy cards then play raptor into big stuff. it takes some set up but its powerful effect.
Ragavan is very poorly positioned in Modern right now. If you had played 4x Ocelot Pride instead of Ragavan, you'd probably have fared much better overall. Also, your manabase is definitely a mess and you could make it a *lot* less awkward with some changes. I'd start by shaving one Arena of Glory, one Aether Hub and maybe one Elegant Parlor for some number of Inspiring Vantages and Sunbaked Canyons. And keep in mind that you faced some pretty bad matchups, including decks that aren't even seen as competitive anymore (I mean, who the hell plays Cabal Coffers post-MH3?) but can definitely catch you by surprise. Boros Energy isn't exactly the best Modern deck around, far from it, but it certainly has more favorable matchups than what you experienced in that league.
I can't win with this deck either. It's pretty fun but it feels like you're always behind. Amped Raptor drawing you something extra is cool, but its body is almost always useless to me so it's more of a 1.1-for-1.
I feel like swapping phlage for ocelot pride and leaning into the cat, soul sisters side would make the deck a bit better. 4 of phlage seems a bit much. 2 seems ideal.
Good job on having an open mind. Bosh dismissed these energy cards(and ajani) as “tier 3” cards he doesn’t want to bother learning about because he’s a vintage winner or whatever
@@nobodyfromnowwhere7510 yeah, I also play the format. the ring sucks in almost everything that isnt control or big mana. aggressive decks like this cant afford to spend their time setting up the ring
@@MekanikKommandoh88 You can say that, all evidence to the contrary. The decks aggro is weak and it can't stand up to removal due to lack of card advantage. It has no top end and spins it wheels setting up a weak card draw effect that uses its removal AND mana resources and gets blown out by, gee, the one ring...

Swords is not legal in modern, but otherwise I agree
A) Swords is not legal in Modern
B) even if it was, it doesn't answer Ring, which is why Prison is mostly played for.

We need to see this attempted again with Ocelot Pride in the list, that interaction looks so nice

phlage is so much better than kroxa, i dont think the comparison is valid

@Alikaoz kroxa is 1 mana more than raven's crime, Phlage is 1 mana more than lightning helix.

There are 6 nonland cards not from a modern horizons set in the maindeck.
even only counting mh3 cards, there are only 10 :)
Almost all of the playable energy cards come from MH3, soooo….

40:00 I think Phil would REALLY enjoy playing this mono-black midrange deck
I have been playing this deck in the timeless format on arena and mother of God Phlage is a fucking house.
Man I am so surprised this list isn’t playing ocelot pride, playing against that card with guide of souls is an absolute fucking nightmare

Another option for a Modern deck would be Yuta Takahashi's Dimir Murktide Frog deck, which is basically all Legacy cards anyways.

the Obsidian Carnaw disables Jegatha :<
i think oceloth pride would have been very good in this deck!
Love your content man
Phelia is good with ajani, and unstable amulet. I see most builds with the doggo
Very nonstandard list, most lists are on 0x Unstable Amulet, 4x Ocelot Pride, and usually some number of Fables
2x fables are there
I’d love to watch you play creator showdown

Depends on context.

I mean, I fucking hate ToR, but it's too busted not to play.
it's too high on the curve, ring is really only playable in control and big mana in modern
