High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP): Potential Impacts, and EPRI Research Approach

  • High-altitude electromagnetic pulse (HEMP) refers to the electromagnetic pulse that is created by the high-altitude detonation of a nuclear weapon. Numerous stakeholders assert that a HEMP attack is probable, and its impact would be catastrophic to the power system infrastructure. However, a science-based approach is needed to assess the true impact of this threat. To address this gap, EPRI has developed a comprehensive research plan that will be carried out over a three-year period. This video provides an overview of science of high-altitude electromagnetic pulses and EPRI’s three-year research plan.

The thing about this video, is, it states utterly devastating facts, but sounds absolutely neutral the whole time. A lay person could listen to it, and think, there's nothing to worry about, all the while the narrator is explaining the exact, most devastating, reality as being possible.

I realize this comment was made a while ago, but I don't fully agree with this, actually whatsoever. Despite what today's modern media and emotion-based society wants to believe, while it is important to recognize the emotional and devastating impact factors of course, this is the way you are supposed to display factual information without it being clouded by subjective information and emotional baggage. Information is and has always been at its best when it is displayed honestly and as a matter of fact, or at least with statistics and evidence rather than using manipulative emotion grabbing language pulls. While of course at least having some emotional tone in your voice, or at least not being monotone, definitely helps keep interest in the topic, providing emotion only usually serves to rile people up or scare them off, which only helps in very particular situations. If someone walks away thinking that, that's unfortunate but their choice, using emotions to rally them up against such a possibility or making them paranoid about it, which are the two primary alternatives regardless of intent, only make situations like this worse and information more likely to be spread more quickly yet far less accurately.

@@genozp2328 I'm not sure what you're disagreeing with specifically. I agree that information should be conveyed in this way (a neutral manner). I didn't mean to imply the video should be radical.

@@nullins, ah, apologies, I must have either misinterpreted what you had meant or exaggerate what you said beyond what it was intended. If so, it either case, my apologies. It seemed to me that you were implying the video should have contained more inflection or emotional pull to make it more obviously conveying it's information, which would typically extend more to a inadvertent or subliminal message when appealing to emotion.
In hindsight, I do agree with you on what you said as well, the video was said in a very monotone and matter of fact manner where someone none the wiser could listen to it, gloss over it, and continue with little thought, whereas if it was stated with more emotion and inflection in individual could feel the devastating horror of the possibilities of the video is describing.
For some reason in my head I had exaggerated that too be implying that the way it was stated was incorrect, when that is actually also just a matter of fact point to be made. The unfortunate part about relaying information logically is that some people more emotionally grounded may not take it seriously without emotional appeal. Whereas information conveyed through various emotions and inflection would often spark fear, joy, and typically some other radicalized emotion the speaker is attempting to convey or sway. Unfortunate as the first option may be with some people not taking it seriously, it is certainly factually the better way of conveying information and deterring the alternative radical paranoia.
😅It's at this point when talk texting where I realize I am basically just rambling. My apologies, I apparently exaggerated what you had said to mean more than what it was saying, because I'm face value and likely what you meant was exactly what it is.

Well done presentation, but it's several years now and even a partial report on the findings and current state of mitigation is due. The increased threats from North Korea (showing ICBM launch capability recently) and the possible and unpredictable actions of Iran give us heightened concerns. Actions in Ukraine are newsworthy, but not at the magnitude of more suicidal countries that are far less rational than Putin. The grid info isn't covered well in any other video I've seen. While somewhat our of scope here, the level of expected coupling through roadside transformers to the customer would be welcome. There is info on lightning and surge protection, but high altitude event levels aren't very clear.

The science that has to do with nukes. For example if you are creating a thermonuclear bomb (H-bomb) of certain sizes, certain components, arranged a certain way, detonated in a certain way you can expect a certain size explosion (boom). Today they simulate these explosions on computers. The science around this whole area is classified as secret or above. They don't want other governments to make them. An example of unclassified science is the reaction of vinegar and bicarbonate of soda. We know from atomic tests in the Pacific that an EMP exists and the effects were felt in Hawaii. Back then we weren't using semi-conductors so it for the most part didn't matter. They could take it. The fear is today electronics can't handle that kind of power. A traffic light back then had 110 power, relays, mechanical timers. Cars had points/magneto ignition. All of that stuff was very sturdy. Today a computer works at a fraction of that power.

There is nothing inherently wrong with that (the industry’s actual lobbying organization-the Edison Electric Institute (EEI)-is also bought and paid for by the electric utility industry as you would expect of a lobbying organization). But where this becomes extremely wrong is when EPRI attempts to influence national policy under the guise of being an “independent” scientific organization supplying unbiased and independent research. This is a lie. EPRI is a thinly veiled electric utility industry lobbying group and their products are lobbying pamphlets-not scientific reports."

We barely missed a fucking massive one in 2012, part of Quebec's grid was taken down by a small one, and there's the famous one in the early 1800. The 50 kv/m figure is total nonsense. The likely amplitude from a targeted Mt range HEMP device would be in the Mv/m range, which is instantly damaging-to-devastating (a range of disabled to totally destroyed) for almost all systems containing electrical components. ALL AT ONCE - VIRTUALLY EVERYWHERE, whether "equally" or not. Think about THAT.

The EM (E1,E2,E3) wave power falls off at with distance squared. The induced electric field (volts per meter) falls off linear with distance. At 100Km away nothing will happen. With short pulses, it appears as voltage glitch of 10ns.
On the other hand, any driver IC that is connected to a coil, example a transistor connected to a relay coil is susceptible to E2. since the E2 induces a voltage in the coil that will reverse break down the transistor driver, damaging it. The E3 like a solar storm is weak and long lasting that has been mitigated

Hospitals and nursing homes would shut down and people would start dying as their breathing machines and other devices power down. Without vital prescriptions, many more would die in the coming days and weeks.
It is estimated that as many as 500,000 people would die in the first hour due to planes crashing.
Without power, every aircraft in the sky would fall to the ground or glide into buildings killing almost everybody on board. Many people on the ground would die as well when these flights plow into populated areas.
Elevators would be a death trap as they freeze in place. Those inside would be in complete darkness and would have to try and find a way out before dying of dehydration. Anybody living near nuclear plants would be in trouble as well.
As the backup generators get fried, these plants would melt down releasing large amounts of radiation. They would kill anybody downwind of the plant. There are 99 nuclear reactors located in the US.
Cholera would likely become a problem within the first few weeks (which is caused by people drinking tainted water). With no power, water filtration plants would go down. Humans can only survive for three days without water. When day three rolls around people will start drinking whatever water they can find.
Many parents work 20 or more miles from home or from their child’s school.
With all transportation coming to a halt, parents would have to hike to their kids and hope their teacher stuck around despite having a family of their own.

pray tell how are you testing effects?

They 'tested' by lowballing the strength of the emp. They use 20 v/m instead of 85. 20 would be the LOWER range of a weapon today. Upper range is 1000. michaelmabee.info/epri-emp-report/

Wonder what the survivors might do to the government officials who caused this to happen? May be best to keep that classified.
