Ryan f9 gave me the idea of getting discontinued gear for cheap. I got all my astars gear half price. Bob's cycle sells last years boots for cheap also.
For commuting, where I'm not really getting above 40 or 45 mph, I wear Icon knee and shin armor under my pants. No, it's not the best as far as the rest of my legs, or my hips, but in 2011 it turned what could have been a knee break or dislocation into no big deal. This also lets me avoid having to change pants at work or wear riding pants over my pants. Sometimes I'll wear the armor all day, other times I'll take it off when I get in. Other than that it's leather or leather+tex jacket with replacement armor (not that foam crap) and a real back protector, gauntlet leather gloves with armor, Shoei full face helmet, and riding boots with good rigid ankle protection (I usually don't wear full race boots for commuting since I don't want to change footwear at work all the time, plus I need something that doesn't go too high up my shin when I'm wearing the Icon knee and shin armor). Whenever I've discussed gear with people I've always brought up the driveway test. It's hypothetical (unless you want it to be real). Just imagine what you're thinking of wearing on a motorcycle, go out into the street in front of your house, and SPRINT at full speed toward your driveway and then jump and land smack onto your driveway. If you feel pretty good about remaining intact in that driveway dive, you might be okay. If the thought of diving onto your driveway after sprinting makes you queasy, you might want to think some more about what you plan to wear.
This is a great topic. My friends make fun of me. I’m the ATTGAT guy. Always have my pants, Jacket, Boots. Gloves and helmet on. Reason being. I want the skin to stay on my body. Road rash is a BITCH!!
I've gotten "road rash" from a bicycle crash back when I was a kid (maybe 14-16, cant remember). And we are talking about 10 maybe 15 mph, and I still have scars from that to this day. I can't even imagine going 40+ on a motorcycle. I wear full gear minus the pants, mostly because I'm a big guy and I can't find any pants that fit. I still went out and paid $95 for a good set of kneepads, to at least protect my knees. I just hope if I fall, I don't fall on my ass, since it's going to hurt. My motivation to lose weight is to be able to fit into proper motorcycle pants.

Hi Dan. I'm struggling to find the comparison between the Australian and New Zealand safety cert vs. The US certifications. I'm a rider in Australia and wanted one of the new smart helmets. However, I'm not able to find out it they meet AUS/NZ standards when most of them only offer the American DOT or EN ratings on their sites.
Allow me to tell you that the DOT American rating is abject crap. I'm an American, and I still say having a DOT sticker seems to mean it will hold your brain as a nice soup after a crash for the EMT to pick it out with a straw. Snell or better. Newer M2020 standard is out too.
According to my layman research MIPS is very new technology that helps reduce brain injury during a crash where the rotation forces can cause the brain to slosh in bad directions and it helps mitigate some of that force. So if you're in love with your brain then probably yes.
I am going to buy a Suzuki Bergman 400 for leisurely rides. I have never owned a motorcycle/ scooter. I live in Palm Springs California so heat is an issue. Iam really impressed with your video and your other training videos. I'm worried at 60+ that it's too frightening but I've waited many years and I need to be brave but not foolish. I take my safety andcthose around me seriously. I have a CDL for bus so you know what I mean. For clothing, I need the breathable super strong material rather than leather. Can you recommend. Cheers
Most modular helmets are just fooling people into thinking they have a full face shield. The crap will break off on first impact. I wonder if Snell will even certify modular helmet?!?!
I bought a cheaper bike jacket 1st time I dropped the bike it did it’s job, I wear gloves I need to get some summer gloves, I will get chaps bikers have worn them forever & they’re cheaper than riding pants, I also wear boots & a helmet what do you think about Odin gloves?
I just wear the draggin Kevlar liners underneath my regular clothes. I invested in a top shelf helmet, gloves and boots. In summer where I am it’s regularly over 100F. I sacrifice some of my safety for the extra comfort, the wind goes through them nicely. In winter I wear full gear, jacket and so forth, not for the extra protection they provide but for more protection from the elements. I really only worry about a slide injury, having broken bones and other things is bad enough but having to lie in a hospital with 2nd degree concrete burns, no thank you! Although I feel it would make some difference in an impact related situation, like a high side or something, I’m sure how much a difference armour would make in general. Wearing uncomfortable or restrictive gear is just as much of a hazard to someone’s safety.
But DanDan, fashion is more important than skin! JK! I'm an ATGATT guy. I had no injuries in my crash (motorcycle totalled) that you covered in one of your live broadcasts a few months back. ATGATT with real motorcycle gear will save you a world of hurt.
I just filed a patent for the brown stage plug. It completely eliminates brown stage by blocking the exit. It also lights up when you're braking, and it lights up different colors depends on how you squeeze. The ultimate safety device.
A good pair of boots I’d recommend would be Falco Patrol or Ranger. But yea I’m an ATGATT guy through and through. But could someone recommend better gloves? I got Icon Overlords. Thanks.
No they’re not if they’re not oil & slip resistant you’re feet will slip out from under you if ever you have to put your feet down duck walking a bike backwards into a parking space or having to flat foot it at a red light & or traffic never ever wear leather bottom boots or shoes on any bike they’re too slick no traction whatsoever me personally I prefer lug sole boots made for motorcycle riding leather up usually has some reasonable prices look for a really good tread on the soles of boots hope this helps
Some people won't wear protective gear because they think they won't crash...and they might not, but that gear can also protect you from everyday occurrences like stones being flicked up from vehicles in front etc. Even a small 1/2" stone or chipping hurts like hell if it hits you on unprotected fingers, shins, face or neck etc, which could then result in a crash, but even if not is still unpleasant.
Thats the thing. Gear only affects my safety. No one elses. I dont wear gear because i see motorcycle riding as a gamble or trade off. More comfort for less safety, and im willing to bet. But for ATGATT dudes, you do you.

This will end up costing about half what really high-end Moto pants would cost.

I wear glasses and only use full face helmets. Most helmets have air vents, or the face shield has different holding positions or look for one with a pin lock shield system.
I picked up a pair of Bilt motorcycle shoes for $50 bucks. They look like old converse but zip up and stay on your feet. With reinforcement on the ankle, and toe. You don't have to spend a fortune on shoes!

I live in America but I also make hardly nothing compared to most people here so let me tell you what I did. I found some Cordura 1000 D fabric and some nice jeans and took that to a seamstress and had them make me some pants. Not everybody can afford $400 pants. @@McGyver777ATGMAIL Thank you for your suggestion. That's a better way than not to wear a motorcycle pants.
When I wear gloves I feel I am loosing the touch from my throttle. Throttle control lowers while I ride wearing gloves. Any suggestions on what I am doing wrong?
Make sure the gloves fit you properly and ride in them. What you think you're losing in tactile feel may just be getting used to the thickness of the gloves under your hand. You don't need that intricate feel with a throttle that your mind is telling you you do. What you need is risk control and control of rotation which is not as fine a motor skill as you might think. If the pros going around the circuit wear gloves and they do what they do, anyone can.
What are your thoughts on "used" gear? I assume it's all good as long as it hasn't been messed up? Is there a lifespan on some gear where they begin to break down after some years regardless of being involved in an accident?
Helmets actually expire after a couple of years & should be replaced because they lose their certification after a few years when new safety regulations come out they won’t be certified for the new regulations so before you buy a used helmet check how old it is & see if it’s up to date with current regulations that being said the dot sticker can be purchased & stuck onto any helmet dot certified or not, check your state’s certification and regulations before purchasing hope this helps
