- Also check out my physics degree version of this video.
I provide a brief summary of what kind of material is covered during a mathematics degree. The purpose of this is not to teach you any content but to give an idea of what you would learn. I did my degree in NZ so the structure will be different from other international degrees, and was only 3 years in duration.
As always I am very happy to answer any questions about what it is like to study mathematics (and physics) at university. I can also explain any of the concepts mentioned in more depth or point you towards further material.
Thanks for watching!

I have absolutely no interest at all in making money out of Mathematics. I want to get a Degree in Mathematics and am reading one on my own. No one knows more than I do how ridiculously difficult it is. And I love it.
My favorite maths course was logic. I wasn't even that good at it, but that's what I find most beautiful in maths. And I don't know how after all of my years on the internet, I hadn't seen that _I love math. It makes people cry!_ It's hilarious. And that chart is pretty accurate. :D
I agree that logic is at the heart of many great ideas in mathematics
where do u take history of math clasat
Spot on. In math, the only easy course is the one you took last term.
That 0=0 photo made my stomach hurt from laughter.
I am an electromechanical engineering student, but I love mathematics and physics. Always thought that when I get my degree, I'll pursuit a degree in math.
You are absolutely fascinating
Not long commented more deeply on another of your videos, and I can already tell how important you are going to be to the full realisation of my journey
Much love x
That description of real analysis was spot on!
I'm quite glad that where I study math (In Finland) we don't do much calculations and calculus because IMHO it's not that interesting or deep. One of my favorite course was Topology I (theory of metric spaces) and then years later topology II. Somehow the impactful results there got me to realize that how interconnected mathematics is. Now I'm quite interested in continuing my studies to phd.
You mean to point out that the calculus problems given in textbooks are often just about finding the right tricks, right? I also thought that they don't really add anything to one's conceptual abilities.
well that depends on the textbook, a lot of math textbooks most of the time do well in explaining how to solve calculus based problems, but don't always show very well the theory or applications they can be used for, this is really up to the professor sometimes to show there is a correlation between say multivariable calculus and electromagnetism, or its gonna help for linear algebra
Great choice of visuals, thank you.
Thanks for watching!
Great summary of real analysis! I love it though :-)
(Currently doing my second year Maths degree! Then I'll be moving to Master's, then PhD in something like Pure Maths & Theoretical Computer science. Wish me luck!)
Thank you so much for this helpful video! Keep up!
Thanks for this pep talk. My first year studying mathematics in a university starts in 7 days.
ahhhhhh this has made me so excited!! I'm going to study maths at Oxford uni next year (as long as I get the grades!!)
Maddie P good luck, i’m going to study mathematics at my state uni...i envy u
I just want to finish this second part of precalculus and then take calculus because I like math. I don't think I could go much farther, so calculus will be extremely challenging for me, but I think it will help me develop my logical thinking.
I have the math knowledge down to conic sections algebra 2 level, I love how thonge function and work, now I'm 36 I can go back to it, and I'm learning calculus when I'm fresh faced and algebra during the day self paced I'm self teaching myself.
Thanks you for letting us know your impression and experience on a Math Course.
I love to study high mathmatics along with electrical ad physics , but the hell is I don't want to learn it alone , there are thousands of thinking in my mind which I want to pop out on someone 😔
But here I am alone 😯
I love this video!
Thanks or the video! I would like to know what do you think about self teaching pure math. First, if its is possible. And if it is, then how . Thanks!
Tibees! I have a question. Why Math is the language of the universe? And why we need it in Physics?
A math degree is tough to market if you stop at the undergrad level and don't have applied knowledge in it for things like computer science or engineering. But I ended up in accounting and I haven't starved yet, so I can't complain. Still, I did have to go back for additional schooling. No problem though. Accounting's a lot easier than math. Just don't like to spend the money to learn at this point.
Mhh I've already done everything you need for first year :D I'll graduate HS this summer and am still contemplating if I should do math or computer science... I think I'll do computer science at a Uni that puts a big focus on math :D
Alex Krause That what I've decided too. I'm still chosing between program with 70% math and 30% programming, and program with 70% programming and 30% math. I think I'll go with the first one because I'm more into math right now.
youre so awesome!!
Was there algebraic topology in possible courses? I'm just curious if it's studied in undergrad.
Very interesting!
U say u use some programs. The other day i wanted to graph a fuction in 3d, maybe using i. Any program u recommend and that is free to play around with 3d functions?
You said you saw new stuff in university which includes integration of trigonometric functions, system of linear equations, vectors in 3D, series and sequences and probability, you didn't learn this in high school?
Also I can't wait to learn multiveriable calculus and integration, it looks very interesting
And the analysis thing somehow reminds me analytical geometry, are they the same?
The new content from first year that I mentioned was linear algebra and matrices. Those other topics that you listed were things that I said were expanded on in the first year - learning some more applications or details about more familiar topics.
The analysis I did was mainly looking at the differentiability, continuity and limits of functions, and also at series and sequences. This could share some aspects of analytical geometry but i'm not sure about that.
Skiwi if you like Calculus then you will enjoy multivariable Calculus. Multivariable is great because in a sense, you can visualize it in our 3-D world. This is just my standpoint from it as a first year student in college.
I really want to study Mathematics later do you think i can do it :(
I'm don't doctorate math course out here and u won't believe what I've just said my experience is this I used it in real life I was doing tom apostle mathematical analysis in junior college
Do you think a musician could benefit from studying Math?
i want to learn group theory and topology in university.
You can start teaching yourself today, plenty of good online materials
I'm not sure if I should major in math or stats
What would you recommend doing to prepare for going into first year uni math?? I want to get prepared over the summer but I’m not sure where to start!!!
Morganna Hinds coursera has some good stuff
Make sure you get fimiliar with complex numbers, this will help you the first few weeks! Maybe watch some math videos of 3blue1brown / Khan Academy of calculus or linear algebra
I love math. Idk how much money I'll make. I just want to know everything possible about math. I love playing games with math. People say to make a career out of what you love. So I will.
How i Will be a mathematician or achieve great skill at math.
Is it a bad idea to get a bachelors in math, and then go for a bachelors in physics? Cant do a double major at the moment
Wow...........
Is this an Exurb1a reference?
BTW I don't recall asking you about this, so here goes:
I learned that f(x)=cuberoot(x) has a domain of any x but if you make an identical function f(x)=(x)^(1/3) meaning x to the power of a third, the domain changes to be x > 0. They are the same numerically but my math teacher says when represented as a function, the domain changes. Why?
To my knowledge the domain of both those functions would be all non-negative real numbers (and I see them as exactly the same)
The reason that x^(1/3) has a domain of x ≥ 0 is because if x could go below 0, strictly speaking that wouldn't be *a* function but 3 functions. Nevertheless, there exists a real solution for the cube root of every real number, and we could very well imagine how an extended graph of x^(1/3) could look like (i.imgur.com/fjubUm5.png), so that's what your teacher was probably talking about.
For example, we could define cuberoot(x) to be equal to "the only real solution of x^(1/3)" and thus get a normal function with the domain consisting of every real number.
If we want that analytically, we could sneak the negative numbers out of the cube root by making something like:
cuberoot(x) = sign(x)*abs(x)^(1/3)
which would also give us the same desired result.
+Mc Thanks for your answer to this question!
No problem! I'm always happy to provide Real help for Complex questions ;)
lol (I hope I'm not the only one who got that)
* هدف هالكومنت عشان أرجعله بعدين وأشوف إذا بندم ولا لا خخخ *
Have you ever had a doubt between Physics and Maths when choosing a major?
+Pablo pastorea Well I couldn't pick one over the other so I majored in both. I'm pursing a PhD in physics though because I did feel more at home with physics
Ohh I've got a problem then. I'm better in Maths but I enjoy doing Physics, what shall I do?
Physics
Thanks, I'll follow you have, why do you think that?
Pablo astoreca Because you are more likely do get better at things you truly enjoy.
Did you have to do algebra, topology, set theory or other pure courses?
I did pure and complex analysis, group theory and algebra. There was a bit of set theory within other courses i took but i didn't do it on it's own.
Where is topology? The mother of all mathematical headaches.
Which university did u study in?
Is it so hard to study math alone ?
Because i feel that i really love math and i want to try to understand it
...
Can't i?
alaa 951 Is not that hard! By studying at math daily u will become better and better and after u will like math. Trust me. Go ahead!
Problem with self-studying maths is that often you will find yourself having huge gaps among topics.
the only reason i do maths is so i become an astrophysicist
you are more into algebra or analysis?
do you teach math online?
no but there are plenty of other people that do?
I hate real analysis 🤦🏻♂️
1:18 But why is the limit in the second case 4 and not 2? Also, shouldn't the limit not exist in this case? if the left-hand limit and the right-hand limit are different?
Not at all. Remember, the limit could be conceptualized as the behaviour of the function as x approaches a given value. This is perhaps not the strictest or best of definitions, but it is useful to understand why it is 4: As x approaches 3, both by the left or the right, f(x) approaches the number 4. However, this does not mean that at 3 the function is equal to 4: Quite the contrary, it is equal to 2.
So... Do you want to teach?
your videos are great! Can you give me your email or something like that because I am also a science youtuber(you commented on my video) so that we can discuss on topics and give each other suggestions.
Hi, anyone is welcome to message me over youtube which you can find on the 'about' tab on my channel
pliz tell me the . area ur doing ph.d...and plizz help me......share it plizz😊😊
You know you love math when you use it to understand the world...
