Choosing CPU GPU combo should not only based on what you are doing currently. Since this machine is kept for long duration mostly, think about future proofing too.
I recently got balls deep into videography and cinematography, somewhat unforeseen. I’m upgrading off the 2020 intel MacBook Pro, definitely thinking of future proofing, life can change so much in the span of 2-3 years. I’m planning to get the M4 Pro 14 core CPU, and I’m planning to keep it for at least 5 years!
I've got the base M3 Pro MBP 14 and it's been a solid device, but my needs aren't anywhere near as demanding as yours. I think Apple really nailed it with the M4 chip - I just got the base M4 Mac Mini and it's pretty amazing.
I got the M4 Pro with 14 core CPU and 24GB ram. Upgraded from the M1 Pro 8 core and i'm really pleased. Greate machine, I would recommend it. One of the best reviews btw!

I’m getting the unbinned 14-inch M4 Pro with 48GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and the standard display. I’m upgrading from a M1 MacBook Air. Edit- I got the 16-inch with the same specs.
Very well made video with great content. I appreciate you speaking like a normal human rather than shouting at us like so many other UA-camrs. Subscribed.
Glad I waited to get the M4 Pro instead of the M3. Extra ports, extra RAM and other features were a great deal. Space Black is a really interesting color. Lighting plays a big role and from a distance it adds extra privacy since it doesn't reflect Apple's typical shine. I love the color. The M4 Pro is the sweet spot in the M4 lineup. I was happy with Intel, but the M4 Pro adds everything extra, making tasks more convenient. I chose the M4 Pro because it’s the sweet spot, with 24GB of RAM and an upgraded CPU and GPU for video editing (as a hobby). Also, the M4 Pro chip, compared to the base model offers faster read/write speeds and better support for external drives, so you can expand your storage more conveniently
@@Joker-fj8hg Oh, I meant the M3 lineup in general. When it came out, it seemed like a good idea to wait for the M4 lineup. I even considered waiting for the M5, but it looks like the bigger updates and changes will come with the M6. So, I decided to stop waiting and went with the M4 Pro
@@Joker-fj8hg True. As I remember, the M3 was rushed out as an early-stage 3nm chip. I was fine with my 2018 MPB and felt I could wait. I didn’t dive that deep into the M3 at the time, and I wasn’t happy with how the base and Pro models offered RAM, etc. (With the M4 lineup, they did better). I was used to having four Thunderbolt ports and connecting a HyperDrive to use all the other ports. Still, the ports are the same, and it's possible they’ll keep it that way for a while. Finding other ways and at the moment all good. But from what I understand, the M3 Pro is a great device especially with good discount deals. Here in the EU, I haven't seen many discounts on Apple devices, just small ones. At the end of the day, it depends on what you do with your MacBook. For office work and videos, the M1 will perform great, even Intel models. For more intensive workloads and video/photo editing, the Pro models are better, and so on. Usually, the prices for new models are fairly similar to the old ones, so there's no need to go for the older model. Every year they add some extra features, but do all people need them? Probably not. I believe most people can enjoy the base models to the fullest
Perfect video for me, thanks. I am upgrading from a 2014 i7 model that will no longer run current software. I am a photographer and was planning on going for the 1TB M4Pro base model. My dilemma is whether the 24GB will be enough memory in future. My gut feeling was not to upgrade the screen, so it's great to hear your thoughts 🙂
Wow i just randomly discovered you and this video was of very high quality and packed with information, including some about the differences in display not many are talking about! Thank you, subscribed!
This is a nice detailed review. I was particularly interested in the speed difference between 512-GB and 1-TB internal SSD at around 6:18. I didn't really care what the difference would be, but I wanted to see someone at least check out what the speeds were. Thanks.
I picked up the 14” m4 pro MacBook Pro after trading in my 16” M1 Pro MacBook Pro and it’s a big upgrade. Love the portability but first thing I noticed was the screen quality it looks so much more vivid in colors. Just learned it has the new dot matrix mini led and it shows. Performance is excellent. I wanted more ram and portability and glad that I did.
Another outstanding video, mate! I'll be upgrading from my M2 Air 16GB/256GB to either the M4 24GB/512GB 13" Air or 14" MBP Pro 24GB/512GB. Apple offered $615 trade in for my Air, but, Best Buy offered $900 for my Air. I'll take that!
Thanks for the video."I'm planning to go with the M4 CPU 14, GPU 20, 24GB, 1TB. I work with video editing and chose this setup with the future in mind, so I don't have to worry about upgrading in the coming years. What do you think about it?" Thanks
@@DelgadoRecords I went with the 24/512 version, not because it's the best but because it's the best I can possibly afford. I was thinking about the M3 pro 36/1TB because they were similiar priced (refurbed M3, new M4) but choosed the M4 pro with less specs because it's newer and seems to be faster due to the cores and some other new stuff I don't understand. I was switching back and forth with so so many models and specs. To the point where I went totally anxious about making the wrong decision. and now I feel pretty good with my choice. Great presentation! I am getting the M4 soon and I too didn’t order the nano/whatever screen coating. As a photographer I think of this as a filter that degrades the screen picture. I suppose it’s useful for users who remote-work from their tropical beach chairs lol!
This video has me sold on the m4 pro , was looking for something to suit my business needs and media creation and reviewing and have to say it seems like in ticks all the boxes , happy Black Friday sales 🎉
quantum dot display greatly improves the response time. you can test it by moving cursor quickly across the screen. you won't see as much ghost images as in the previous generation.
This is exacty what I was looking for, I was set for Macbook Pro 14" M4 Max, but chatgpt and your video convinced me to get the Macbook M4 Pro 14core with 48GB and 1TB , I work mainly with cubase , you think this is the best choise?
A great review, thanks! That's very interesting about the difference in write speeds between the 512 and 1TB drives. Why is that? Also wondering about if 24GB RAM is enough for large audio projects?
Hi! I’m going to buy a MacBook Pro soon, but I’m not sure which one to buy: M4 seems very well balanced especially for the use in computer science and physics master degree. However, the M4 pro with 24 gb ram and more power is very tempting. I’d go with the M4 pro to future-proof and mostly to have some extra ram and power, even for some rare gaming. What is stopping me is the fact that the M4 pro is less efficient for light tasks, since it has less efficiency cores. What do you think?
I had the M1 Pro with a 16, and it just felt like a chonker the entire time I had it. I do a lot of my work on an external display, and any time I travel, 16 always felt like it was too big. Since then, I've always got the 14 and never looked back!
You might be about to answer this in an upcoming video but, I'm currently trying to decide between the MBP M4 Pro Base Model/MBA M3 512gb 16gb RAM/upcoming MBA M4. I'd mostly just use my MB for web-browsing, media consumption, light stock trading, and basic photo/video editing. The TOUGHEST task I take on is gaming (which is pretty mid on Macs as of now, but wanna get as much performance as I can within reason). If you were in my shoes, what would you choose? Thank you man!!
Will 24GB of RAM be enough for your workflow? I’m asking because I often have many applications and Chrome tabs open. On my swap alone, I have 14GB, and my MacBook only has 8GB of RAM, so I’m worried that 24GB might not be sufficient for more demanding applications. What’s your experience?
@@KyleErickson how much RAM is typically used on your machine? Especially, how much do you have in swap? If it’s in swap, do these MacBooks slow down significantly?
I had the M4 base model with nano texture, the display def makes a difference in my college life going outside and in the library a lot, however there was a sale so I returned that and got the m4 pro model without the nano texture and I do enjoy the glossier look better, however i might get a magnetic screen protector just for those moments where there is too much reflections, and I can get that for 3 times cheaper then the permanent option. With my video editing tests, the M4 pro is incredible, beating my medium end pc, Ryzen 9 7900x and 3060ti by 30 seconds on just a 5 minute 1080p video (1:23 vs 0:55).
I wonder if the new display has any difference in response times? as the 120hz display in the m1 macbook pro has a bit of slow response rate and ghosting
should I get the 12-core pro m4 chip or the 14-core pro m4 chip? longer battery life is it worth it for the 12-core? I will keep the laptop for 5 years at least, 48gb ram and 2tb ssd I will get them. can't decide on 12-core vs 14-core
I don’t think we should say that the M4 makes the MacBook “polished”. MacBooks have always been polished. The M4 chips make them untouchable as a laptop. No windows, Chromebook or linux laptops compare
I am in this situation: I have a macbook pro 14" M1 pro 16Gb 1Tb and would like to upgrade mainly for ram. I have two possibilities: M1 max 16" 64Gb 1Tb for 1600€ (used but like new) or a M4 pro 14" 24Gb 512Gb around 1800€. I do graphics and design (adobe suite and fusion 360 mainly). Any advice? 😅
Super video, and incredible computers! I went down to the Apple Store last night and tried out a new M 4 MacBook Pro, I have the M1 pro. I just tested a couple of applications to see how fast they came up. every single application comes up, just a wink shy of instantaneously. But I started thinking… My M1 pro travels at about 80 miles an hour and the new M 4s travel at about 130 miles an hour, but I'm not sure I need to go that fast.
Hi Kyle, As always Great Video. 💥 Thank you for including 512 GB vs 1 TB Speed test as per my request.🤩 Also, Please Do Ram comparison Video If you can 18 vs 24 vs 32 vs 48 Gb . Thank You.☺
I was really hoping you would expand on the M4 Pro's performance in Fusion 360🙏 I am an engineer and for the first time I'm considering switching to Apple, due to Window's continuous lackluster performance off of the battery.
I am questioning if mine could possibly be defective in some capacity because I have an M4 pro, one notch up from the base model with a tb of storage and I also paid for the 48 gigs of memory. I was just downloading through the Jagex launcher old school RuneScape and it warmed the bottom of my machine up by a lot, and the fans came on to what seemed like full power. It was quite loud, and honestly, I was shocked by the amount of heat coming out of this new laptop! Again, I hadn’t even gotten around to playing yet. It was just downloading and then at the login screen. I also noticed that my battery was at around 80 percent and it went down to 54!! This was only during the period of overheating with fans on just during the duration of downloading and opening to login which was only about a couple minutes! Any thoughts?
I noticed this with any macbook ive had. Runelite didn't run as hot though but there were times where the fan will kick in depending on location in OSRS and how graphic heavy it was.
What would be a good external monitor choice for this mac? I’m looking for a 27” monitor for regular work. I work in radiology. I don’t need it for gaming or edit photo or video. Thanks in advance!
There is one made with mac computers in mind and also it can be very good for your line of work : Benq MA270U. 4k, 1200:1 contrast. The 27” version is 400 nits and the 32” one is 550. I hope it helps.
If you plan to work on more complex tasks like heavy Fusion effects, multi-layer editing or RAW video workflows, then going with 32GB of RAM is a smart move for smoother performance and future-proofing. However, if video editing is more of a hobby or you mostly work on lighter tasks like basic 4K editing, trimming, and simple color grading, the 24GB option should be more than sufficient for your needs. That's why I took M4 pro 24gb. I do web development in general, a little Photoshop and Illustrator. I was good with an Intel 8GB setup, but I love the power of the M4 pro
@@maidenseddie1701 I was fine with my MBP 2018 with 8GB RAM. I did web development, some Photoshop and Illustrator work, watched videos, and handled general office tasks. For video editing, it wasn’t that great because newer programs require more RAM and take a lot longer to process. But it was manageable since I mostly just added simple fades and cuts to some clips. I used ffmpeg via command line when needed. I believe there will soon be an Air M4 or there are some great offers at the moment? If you’re considering the Air, I’d wait for the M4 version, it’s possibly coming between January and March. What do you use your computer for? Light tasks or do you need more power? For future-proofing I think the MacBook Pro is a great option, but it depends on your needs. For school and office work, the MacBook Air will do its job perfectly. If you’re planning to add photo or video editing then the Macbook pro M4 is a great choice. Personally I think the M4 Pro chip is the sweet spot. At the moment, I’m not fully utilizing its power (M4 pro chip) - I got it more for future-proofing so I can work with ease for years to come. Plus if I decide to dive deeper into video editing or other heavy tasks, I’ll have the flexibility to handle them. Better pricing in USA, here in EU it's little bit higher
I’d probably go for the lesser chip, as the gains from higher spec is only about 10% (task dependent)I believe. Plus in a 14” MacPro. You will experience throttling more with the higher spec chip. I’m no expert and I haven’t used an apple chip Mac yet… but if you want to get the upgraded chip… I’d defo advise getting a 16” Mac instead
@ I’m gonna order a 14 for the same reason you mentioned, 16 is too heavy (and apple care is more expensive on it?). Me personally, I’m just going to stick with the 12/16 chip… not really worth upgrading in the 14” body (in my opinion) but I will be getting the anti-reflective display too (forgot the actual name, hopefully you understand me)
@@LCheon that’s the one, I am a degree apprentice and the office I work in has bright lights on all the time. University is also full of bright lights and windows so, feel like the nano reflective display is just worth the upgrade for myself. M4 pro chip is more than enough in the 14” size Chassis
Thanks for the great review! I noticed yours seems to be the only review I can find that shows CAD software, specifically Fusion 360 - this is my main requirement. I’m currently using a 2019 Dell 15” XPS 9560 with i7-7700HQ 2.8GHz with 16GB RAM and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 4GB GDDR5 graphics. I’m considering a base spec 16” M4 Pro 24GB / 512GB vs the M4 Max 36GB / 1TB - the latter will no doubt be better but it’s a big £1k more, will I see the benefits of this significant extra spend?
Yes! I owned the M1 and M2 MacBook Air (and the 16” M1 Max mbp) and now the 14” M4 Pro MBP. With the M4 even under moderate to light heavy workload the fans are completely off, so the laptop is totally silent.

I also have numerous apps open - Maps, Apple News, Apple Weather, Mail, Calendar, Photomater and many others, just to test the unified Memory usage. Still almost completely silent but just audible at typing distance. This was toward the end of exporting this 1hr + clip. For reference, my 16" M1 Max MBP would have spun up the fans but not as soon and they would have been a lower RPM and slightly more quiet. All told this is an amazing machine and will run silent most of the time and when it is stressed (at least for my use case rendering the above similar clips) it will not make much noise at all - barely perceptible. Doing a 10 minute Cinebench multi-core CPU test WILL definitely heat up the maching and the fans will spin at either 50% or 95% depending on automatic or high power setting. At this point they are definitely audible but not annoyingly so, least not for me. However, there is not much I ever plan to do with the M4 Pro that will stress the CPU or GPU this much. Hope this helps. It was a good exercise for me as well.
If you are on the move a lot, the 14" is the way to go as it is considerably more portable. But if you are pretty grounded then the extra screen space is a benefit to seek
@@Kabeer_0208 Yep. I love my 14, so easy to pick up and move around the house, fits well on airline tray tables, etc. The screen does feel a bit small at a coffee shop though.

Difference in performance between 16 and 20 core gpu is too small to justify price increase. Binned pro appears to be sweet spot this year between performance and price.
@@BeeRoyLee people been wanting me to get that because it gives me a sort of future proofing. I do intensive tasks like 3 d modeling and a lot of video editing
@@jaketheman7402 if anything it will add a couple extra months since the difference is so minimal. If you want to see significant gains in graphics, go with 16 inch max. Heat dispensation for the more powerful gpu is more efficient in 16in form.
I have a couple comments: 1) tb4 should be plenty fast for any external ssd 2) if you don’t know whether you need the extra cpu or gpu cores - you almost certainly do not - the applications that take advantage of gpu acceleration and parallel processing are very specific and people whose livelihoods depend on them already know the answer. If you are just a hobbyist or amateur these issues are far less impactful. 3) the m4 pro and m4 do have some differences in terms of external display capability which may matter to some people - m4 pro has a bit more “bandwidth” in outputting to more and higher refresh rate monitors. 4) probably the most important thing to me - as an amateur/hobbyist - but still technical minded - is the amount of ram. While 16gb is certainly a good amount today for my relatively simple needs today (photo editing - without shutting everything else down) - I do like to think a few years out. So I like to always go one step up - which makes me want to get 24gb just so that I the machine will still be good to go in the future. I’m not worried about the gpu or cpu.
I'm in the same boat as you. Don't need to do technical work to earn a living but I'm ramping up a side gig which requires multitasking and keeping several web apps open. I won't need more than the out of box CPU/GPU but I'm sure I need them RAM. I want to get the 24GB too and noticed some folks in the comments recommending the 48GB for future-proofing and that's got me thinking because my plan is to keep this machine running well for 7-8 years.
@@maidenseddie1701 So I actually ended up pulling the trigger - found a Black Friday sale - $250 off of the M4 pro version - 16 gpu cores with 24gb ram - for $1,750 total. So I went with that. According to the resource monitor - when using Lightroom, surfing the web, listening to music, and messaging - so a decent set of the things I would be doing all at once generally - it said I was using 13gb ram - and was running nice and snappy. If I had 16gb ram - I probably would NOT notice a difference … today. HOWEVER - I do think over the next few years it’s likely I would start bumping into the resource ceiling - so I’m glad I got 24gb. Once you start going well above “the next” level of resources you need for “future proofing” - you have to decide whether that really makes sense. Going up to 36 or 48gb adds a lot more expense - and even if it lets you keep your device - theoretically - for 3 or 4 more years - at some point - you might simply be better applying that money towards a new lower end device 4 years from now with the money you would have spent. A base model m4 is pretty good compared to the high end m1s in some applications So since you don’t know exactly what you’ll be using it for in 5-8 years - my advice is generally - go one step up in ram beyond what you need - but don’t overbuy too much - because the technology definitely gets better - and it’s nice to be able to buy it when it does.
Got M4 pro 14/48ram/1tb with $250 discount it was $50 cheaper than M4 pro 12/48ram/1tb. They “made” me get the 14 core upgrade lol i hope the fans behave themselves while I’m recording music, otherwise I don’t think I’ll mind given smaller 14” size.

New subscriber here This has been the most helpful video I have watched on MacBook Pro M4 Pros, as a non Apple user it has been confusing on what to buy and where I should upgrade and where I should save. I do video editing and 4k podcasts etc. My windows machine has 64gb ram, I know apple uses the memory differently, is the 24GB enough or is a ram upgrade to 48 Ram worth the money?
if you're just doing lighter edit or projects, I think 24 is fine, but if you're super worried about it, having the peace of mind might be worth the extra cost. That said, I've edited these videos on the M2 machines with 8GB of RAM before, so I wouldn't get too bent out of shape about it, haha.
I'm using the 24GB RAM version and can happily run a couple of VMs (one of which is Windows 11 ARM), containers (small-scale for training and testing), development, and cloud stuff (I work in IT). It's a fantastic computer.

More the better… but if you have to ask then you probably should be in 24GB camp. You should know how your machine behaves today and know the RAM required. I run LLM but I don’t need super large models so 24GB is just fine and I can run up to 11B model with ease but 32B would struggle but not many models I need are 32B. Most are 7-8B and ran fine on 16GB ram before my 24GB M4Pro
I'm getting ready to upgrade to this machine--MBP M4 Pro--from my old reliable 2015 15" MBP. I'm expecting to see quantum leaps in performance from that old Intel dinosaur. My primary uses would be Photoshop and Lightroom. My current machine's battery has swollen and warped the case. Also, has reached the end of its OS upgrades with Monterey. Also, same thing with my Adobe software: Lightroom and Lightroom Classic current versions are incompatible with my old machine, and Photoshop gives me a message telling me that their new versions may not work well with my current machine. So I guess it's time
What MBP will you upgrade to? I need it for Photoshop and Lightroom same as you. And light video editing. I'm not sure if I should pick 24GB or 48GB or even 64GB. What do you think?
Found you channel a few days back. Loved the content and subscribed. Based on your review, bought an M4 Pro Macbook Pro (base model). Now looking for an external monitor. Wonder if you have any thoughts on Asus' new 5K 27" monitor (ProArt PA27JCV 5K) which costs $800, half the price of Apple Studio?
I haven't looked at one yet, but that might be something I have time for next year! Right now I wouldn't recommend the studio display, but there's a lot of great options, it really boils down to what your price range is. I would just make sure whatever you get is factory calibrated to make sure your colors are solid, but from there, it's super hard to recommend anything, as there are so many factors!
Choosing CPU GPU combo should not only based on what you are doing currently. Since this machine is kept for long duration mostly, think about future proofing too.

I’m getting the unbinned 14-inch M4 Pro with 48GB RAM, 1TB SSD, and the standard display. I’m upgrading from a M1 MacBook Air.
Edit- I got the 16-inch with the same specs.
What’s unbinned mean
Not readily available. Made to order.
Thanks Kyle, you've become part of my Sunday morning routine, always great content!
thanks for watching! appreciate you!
First time viewer on your channel... now this is what I call a quality review! Sub'd.
I’m just wondering why are you comparing M4 pro to M3 instead of M3 pro
@@Joker-fj8hg Oh, I meant the M3 lineup in general. When it came out, it seemed like a good idea to wait for the M4 lineup. I even considered waiting for the M5, but it looks like the bigger updates and changes will come with the M6. So, I decided to stop waiting and went with the M4 Pro
@@christeder but M3 pro has the same numbers of port as M4 pro, and space black is also available on M3 pro
@@christeder fair analysis
Perfect video for me, thanks. I am upgrading from a 2014 i7 model that will no longer run current software. I am a photographer and was planning on going for the 1TB M4Pro base model. My dilemma is whether the 24GB will be enough memory in future. My gut feeling was not to upgrade the screen, so it's great to hear your thoughts 🙂
I think I'll squeeze one more year out of my 2017 MacBook pro and get the next M5 max, whenever that comes out. Thanks for the video
Your opening words share exactly what I thought! The M4Pro MBP is what the M3Pro should have been. You are spot on!
Love the real-world testing and the calm, no-hype vibe of the video. Keep creating, Kyle!
Thank you for all the work, detail and quality of this video!
You covered a lot of details that others missed. Thanks for another insightful video.
Thanks for the video."I'm planning to go with the M4 CPU 14, GPU 20, 24GB, 1TB. I work with video editing and chose this setup with the future in mind, so I don't have to worry about upgrading in the coming years. What do you think about it?"
Thanks
im thinking about the same but with the 512GB version, hope it works, i dont tend to do pretty heavy work
@@DelgadoRecords I went with the 24/512 version, not because it's the best but because it's the best I can possibly afford. I know content creator who do youtube and courses still on an 8/200ish MacBook air. I think we'll be fine :)
Looking forward to you testing the new TB5 drives and docks.
Thanks for this report. Using an 13" M2 Pro, I was reluctant to upgrade until now, even with the larger 14" size. Now I'm tempted.
Don't unless you have 8GB of RAM
Thank you for sharing your experience.
Great presentation! I am getting the M4 soon and I too didn’t order the nano/whatever screen coating. As a photographer I think of this as a filter that degrades the screen picture. I suppose it’s useful for users who remote-work from their tropical beach chairs lol!
Nice wallpapers. Care to share the source to get them?
In the video description…
Do you think this base model would be able to edit 4k 60fps smoothly? Or would you recommend upgrading to 48gb ram for 60fps…
Yes, it should be fine in most instances
@ thanks!
How does the M4 Pro perform on Parallels, running PowerQuery in Excel, and Power BI Desktop?
This video has me sold on the m4 pro , was looking for something to suit my business needs and media creation and reviewing and have to say it seems like in ticks all the boxes , happy Black Friday sales 🎉
Is the m4 pro is good enough for vfx or I have to go for m4 max ??
quantum dot display greatly improves the response time. you can test it by moving cursor quickly across the screen. you won't see as much ghost images as in the previous generation.
This is exacty what I was looking for, I was set for Macbook Pro 14" M4 Max, but chatgpt and your video convinced me to get the Macbook M4 Pro 14core with 48GB and 1TB , I work mainly with cubase , you think this is the best choise?
M4 or M4 pro? 🤔🤔🤔 the 8gb ram on my M2 air is laggy sometimes when I do excel spreadsheets with lots of tabs open and other apps.
24gb of ram is enough for davinci and lightroom?
What if you get the Max for the pro price? Is the Max worth it then? Would it make a difference in the 14 in chassis?
What tool are you using to show E-Core and P-Core usage at 1:58?
Where can i find the wallpaper 😅?
What do you think?
what I need to know, is where you found that background photo, sir.
How did you decide on 14” over 16”? Major deciding factors?
I had the M1 Pro with a 16, and it just felt like a chonker the entire time I had it. I do a lot of my work on an external display, and any time I travel, 16 always felt like it was too big. Since then, I've always got the 14 and never looked back!
@@KyleEricksonaren't the fans quite noisy in the 14"?
Hello! Thank you for the video! Could you please tell me what this console utility for monitoring is (2:00)?
What’s your experience?
for my workflow, I can get by on 16 without any issues.
@@KyleErickson how much RAM is typically used on your machine? Especially, how much do you have in swap? If it’s in swap, do these MacBooks slow down significantly?
24 or 48gb ram man? I do like alot of blender I am new to this apple silicone and I usually go with 32 but it's expensive so I seek your help
48. I learned long ago that you never have enough RAM or drive space. Buy as much as you can afford.
Do you think that m3 MacBook air is a good buy than waiting for the m4 MacBook air
Unless you get a massive discount the M4 is the way to go
M4 all day
great review thanks😊
should I get the 12-core pro m4 chip or the 14-core pro m4 chip? longer battery life is it worth it for the 12-core? I will keep the laptop for 5 years at least, 48gb ram and 2tb ssd I will get them. can't decide on 12-core vs 14-core
5:28
12 core is much more efficient and runs with lower temps == less thermal throttling
Definitely the base 12 core. That's what im using right now and it's miles ahead of the non-pro M4.
Mine is on the way 🎉
How do you like the Thunderbolt 5 any comments on it verse the Thunderbolt 4 ?
doesn't make a huge difference tbh. A little easier with editing videos from an external SSD.
Thank you for your reply.
I love the lighting. And you good looking as well. ^_^
Any advice? 😅
Hey thanks for the video. I wonder which app you use to display those power watt, frequency, temperature parameters?
hi, can you make a video comparing the 2 AirPods from this year pleas?
Super video, and incredible computers! I went down to the Apple Store last night and tried out a new M 4 MacBook Pro, I have the M1 pro. I just tested a couple of applications to see how fast they came up. every single application comes up, just a wink shy of instantaneously. But I started thinking… My M1 pro travels at about 80 miles an hour and the new M 4s travel at about 130 miles an hour, but I'm not sure I need to go that fast.
Hi Kyle,
As always Great Video. 💥

Please compare battery life time on Low Battery mode on M4 and M4 Pro
I was really hoping you would expand on the M4 Pro's performance in Fusion 360🙏
I am an engineer and for the first time I'm considering switching to Apple, due to Window's continuous lackluster performance off of the battery.
That link in the description doesn't have the wallpaper featured in the video (I really like that wallpaper)
I have the m1 2020 👀👀 looks very tempting
What would be a good external monitor choice for this mac? I’m looking for a 27” monitor for regular work. I work in radiology. I don’t need it for gaming or edit photo or video. Thanks in advance!
There is one made with mac computers in mind and also it can be very good for your line of work : Benq MA270U. 4k, 1200:1 contrast. The 27” version is 400 nits and the 32” one is 550. I hope it helps.
then lunar lake laptops will be great option for you
what about the ram ? is 24gb enough for content creators , using after effects and davinci ?
If you plan to work on more complex tasks like heavy Fusion effects, multi-layer editing or RAW video workflows, then going with 32GB of RAM is a smart move for smoother performance and future-proofing. However, if video editing is more of a hobby or you mostly work on lighter tasks like basic 4K editing, trimming, and simple color grading, the 24GB option should be more than sufficient for your needs. That's why I took M4 pro 24gb.
I do web development in general, a little Photoshop and Illustrator. I was good with an Intel 8GB setup, but I love the power of the M4 pro
@@christeder How were you good with the Intel 8GB!? I'm struggling with mine (Intel i5 2017) and deciding between the Air M3 and the MBP M4 Pro.
@@maidenseddie1701 I was between air M3 and M4 Pro (600€ difference at 24GB and 512GB) and decided on M4 pro for more power and the 120hz screen
12/16 m4pro+ 1TB storage
Or 14/20 + 512GB
which would be better choice as im a student who's planning to learn Ai ML DL in near future
@@alexthomas446 16" is too heavy to carry everywhere, for 14" model should I stick with 12/16? I'm kinda confused bw 14/20 and 12/16
@ I’m gonna order a 14 for the same reason you mentioned, 16 is too heavy (and apple care is more expensive on it?). Me personally, I’m just going to stick with the 12/16 chip… not really worth upgrading in the 14” body (in my opinion) but I will be getting the anti-reflective display too (forgot the actual name, hopefully you understand me)
@alexthomas446 Thats the exact setup I am getting and I work with AI and ML, I am guessing you are referring to the nano reflective screen?
@@LCheon that’s the one, I am a degree apprentice and the office I work in has bright lights on all the time. University is also full of bright lights and windows so, feel like the nano reflective display is just worth the upgrade for myself. M4 pro chip is more than enough in the 14” size Chassis
Hey Kyle do you have the m4 video posted?
Have you actually used nano? Your description of it is not accurate. It looks better in every way.
I’m considering a base spec 16” M4 Pro 24GB / 512GB vs the M4 Max 36GB / 1TB - the latter will no doubt be better but it’s a big £1k more, will I see the benefits of this significant extra spend?
...the lack of external thunderbolt 5, and the fan noise, and the price seems mad to spend so much on m4 pro and I am not convinced...
Is it silent as a MacBook Air in normal use?
Yes! I owned the M1 and M2 MacBook Air (and the 16” M1 Max mbp) and now the 14” M4 Pro MBP. With the M4 even under moderate to light heavy workload the fans are completely off, so the laptop is totally silent.

I'm trying to justify choosing the 14" version over the 16" you seem to use it for video editing. Is the small screen an issue or is it good enough?
same. I’m used to 16” but the weight bothers me. So hard to lose screen real estate.
If you are on the move a lot, the 14" is the way to go as it is considerably more portable. But if you are pretty grounded then the extra screen space is a benefit to seek
@@Kabeer_0208 I also want the 16" but that costs 900 dollars more. The weight doesn't really bother me

Hey, I'm thinking about buying MBP M4 pro 14", and want to futureproof, so I initially thought about buying 14cpu version with 48gb ram and 1tb disk space, but I've seen people saying that this procesor really heats up in the 14" model so I'm worried now. Should I get 12cpu version instead with all the upgrades? Any thoughts??
It's going to be the same. The only solution is to go with 16".
You suggest binned over the 20 cpu core?
Difference in performance between 16 and 20 core gpu is too small to justify price increase. Binned pro appears to be sweet spot this year between performance and price.
yes I think so, longer battery and just as powerful the extra performance cores are overkill
Absolutely. The base 14 in. M4 Pro is going for $1750 on Amazon right now. It's an absolute steal
I have a couple comments:
1) tb4 should be plenty fast for any external ssd
2) if you don’t know whether you need the extra cpu or gpu cores - you almost certainly do not - the applications that take advantage of gpu acceleration and parallel processing are very specific and people whose livelihoods depend on them already know the answer.
@@maidenseddie1701
So I actually ended up pulling the trigger - found a Black Friday sale - $250 off of the M4 pro version - 16 gpu cores with 24gb ram - for $1,750 total.
A base model m4 is pretty good compared to the high end m1s in some applications
So since you don’t know exactly what you’ll be using it for in 5-8 years - my advice is generally - go one step up in ram beyond what you need - but don’t overbuy too much - because the technology definitely gets better - and it’s nice to be able to buy it when it does.
I would have gone with base m4 but i am planning to keep the machine for more than 5-6 years i will be going with base m4 pro due to 24 gb ram

Could you go deeper into nano texture ?
Hey man.. love your content! Can I ask which motion template you used for your spec sheet.

This has been the most helpful video I have watched on MacBook Pro M4 Pros, as a non Apple user it has been confusing on what to buy and where I should upgrade and where I should save.
@@KyleErickson great thanks, if you can afford buy it and then its never a worry. But if you can't afford it, don't sweat it
Wow nice bro buy all Mac for us to review❤
this is why i’m subscribed
is 24GB of ram good enough or 48GB.. ?
I'm using the 24GB RAM version and can happily run a couple of VMs (one of which is Windows 11 ARM), containers (small-scale for training and testing), development, and cloud stuff (I work in IT). It's a fantastic computer.
If i wanna run linux (fedora and debian) will it create any issue?
And btw 12/16 m4pro+ 1TB
Or 14/20 + 512GB which would be better choice as im a student who's planning to learn Ai ML DL in recent future @@TheB1nary
Depends on what you are going to do with the pc
More the better… but if you have to ask then you probably should be in 24GB camp. You should know how your machine behaves today and know the RAM required. I run LLM but I don’t need super large models so 24GB is just fine and I can run up to 11B model with ease but 32B would struggle but not many models I need are 32B. Most are 7-8B and ran fine on 16GB ram before my 24GB M4Pro
Between coding, modeling and llms, 24 gigs handles everything I need
So I guess it's time
I’m going from a late 2013 MBP to a M4 pro tomorrow. I’m sure my mind will be blown.
@@KyleErickson Thanks Kyle. Will keep this in mind.
I guess compared to the M1 pro base version, we're comparing a human being from 2024 with a Neanderthal lol
I'm on Air M2 and I feel like Im missing out already lol
