IRONY: Mike was worried about Archie and Edith raising Joey. In the end, they adopted Stephanie, and did a fantastic job with her, including Archie alone after Edith died. Mike ended up running off to a hippie commune with one of his students while leaving Gloria and Joey to fend for themselves.
More ironic: Meathead was never even half the man Archie was. I think the meathead knew it too.

Mike always had the solutions to the war to Vietnam and peace and economy but had no solutions for his own marriage in the show and left Gloria and he had a education but Archie did not have an education and he was able to raise kids
Meathead had that education because he freeloaded off the Bunkers while going to school to get that education. Typical democrat atitude.
He left because Rob Reiner no longer wanted to do his role when he was offered to do it in a spinoff, so they had to write Mike out. It was like when they had Edith die in ABP because Jean no longer wanted to play Edith.
Those were the days!
Ah, the 70s... You could smoke everywhere, brown and orange were primary colors and it just wasn't a tv comedy without a dollop of emotional trauma.

I don't understand why Mike and Gloria made that decision without speaking to Archie and Edith first.

They were just worried a what if something happend and how the machine gun toy mike was scared picturing years later Joey growing up a violent dangerous man. Look at our kids today?

There were SO many layers to the text and subtext of this show. When Archie sat on the toy gun and it registered its rat-a-tat-tat, it was clear he was experiencing war-related flashbacks. His pain and fear, reinforced by the stern warning not to mock him, were evident. Trauma Meathead knew nothing about, despite his pompous pontification. Brilliant acting and writing.
I disagree with Mike and Gloria decision sure Archie has his own opinions about politics, race, ect but he did help Edith raise Gloria changing her and bathing her watching his little girl grow into a beautiful young woman getting married and giving them a grandson. Also they adopted Stephanie proving they are capable of raising a child.
Even Edith said she did everything taking care of Gloria..she got up in the night when Gloria was a baby and even when she was sick. Archie didn't help.

Archie had his views, but he loved “his little girl.” And he loved Joey; he even loved Mike. Archie was a fantastic character.

The thing is today, if this situation was really happening, both Archie and Edith would have grandparent rights, and likely would take custody of Joey should something happen to Mike and Gloria.

One thought that occurs to me. Why focus on Mike and Gloria's demise? Focus on living. Actually, I think Mike is being selfish. Gloria goes along with him, right or wrong
but mike had no problem mooching off of archie and and edith when they lived with them for years but now their not good enough to raise their grandchild.
Even when this show was on in the 70's and I was a teenager, thinking I was cool and more forward-thinking, I didn't like Mike. He lived in Archie and Edith's house, ate their food, lived off of them, then disrespected them, argued at every opportunity with Archie and thought he was the smartest one walking. 50 years later, I haven't changed my mind. Archie may have been a bigot and a bit ignorant but it was his money that enabled Mike to go to school, eat and have a roof over his head.
Rob Reiner does such an excellent job of portraying a piece of human garbage. You'd think he was born for the role.

Several extremely competent financial planners I have listened to over the years advised against leaving the kids to the grandparents. Nothing to do with toxicity or not being fit. It was a question of age. Age has a high probability of a decline in general health and illness.
