Sparks flew like fireflies when Edith smacked the bejesus out of Archie when she discovered he was gambling again. That scene (from the episode Archie the Gambler) was undoubtedly the most gratifying moment in the series' history.
I love when Edith found her backbone in the later years of the series. She had finally had enough of sacrificing everything for everyone else. It was her turn to be put first for a change. Brilliant writing.
Me too. I greatly prefer the second half of AITF to the first half. Archie is softened a bit (he’s really tough to take in the early years) and Edith is just great.
It is gratifying. The character was originally written to be Archie's equal in cynicism, but there was no chemistry until they turned her into the flighty pushover we came to know.
@@koreypinkerton5031 - Not exactly: Woke is when men tell you they can be women and vice versa. And men proceed to demand the takeover and domination of women’s sports. Any woman who has trained her whole life and then points out it’s unfair having to compete in such an arena is called a transphobe. She’d be back to watching her rights as a woman be erased. That’s woke.
Even the audience was a little taken aback at first! They were all as surprised as she was that she had that in her. But boy, when she stuck to her guns they were right there with her! They were such brilliant actors.
Edith is a saint, she’s put up with so much and she’s always been the one giving in the relationship. So you can’t help but feel for her when she want’s Archie to do something for her and he puts up a fight she has every right to get angry at him.
I was a little kid (8 years old) when I saw this, and it was burned into my brain. I cheered when Edith stuck up for herself. It's funny how small moments stick with you, and to this day, I learned to always stick up for what you believe is right and to not be afraid of the consequences of being a good person. I love that this clip was shared on UA-cam.
Edith was RIGHT! Archie ALWAYS got his way...👴🚫👎🏽🙅🏾♀️ Plus, as the only one in the marriage who was working for "pay" he supposed to "PAY FOR EVERYTHING". Period. I was very glad that the writers made the decision to LIBERATE Edith. 👏🏽🤗❤
Love how the writers let each character grow, Gloria and her husband would help Edith understand her own power and that she deserved to be treated better and they also helped Archie to understand where he was wrong and to treat his wife with more understanding and care... A lot of marriages had some of the elements that this show depicted back then, and I think this show in part, helped a lot of married change for the better.
Gloria and the Meathead didn't really do that, They helped Edith sure but they constantly bashed and berated Archie, Archie is no where near a saint but in his own way he does try for her when it really matters but this isn't one of those moments where he doesn't see the necessary need to be there as it has nothing to do with him, selfish sure but it's relatable overall. The best way to show that Archie does care for her is during the episodes where Edith really has it rough (Edith's 50th Birthday and the Episode where Beverly LaSalle dies) it shows that Archie will do anything to keep her happy even if it means making a fool of himself. The unfortunate circumstances Archie and Edith both are stuck in is the stereotype of a Housewife not being equal to a job which is why even she looks shocked as well saying what she said and due to that Archie is unfortunately right in how their relationship is played out because they both agree with the roles they're in. They do care for each other in the end.
I was a kid in the 70s and we never missed All in the Family. I felt about those two almost like they were family - kind of like an aunt and uncle. Really sad when they passed.
Wow! Does that take me back! Remembering when comedy like this was cutting edge is really a wake up call! Who knew I would ever get this old? But I do remember watching this show and loving it. This show was truly groundbreaking. A classic.
You must not have watched the show, the outer layer you see this but if you watch and peel the layers and see The characters for who they are you do see that Archie is appreciative of his wife, he doesn't openly show it due to what he witnessed from his parents. Similarly Edith had the same thing just not near the level of what Archie been through but enough to know she needs to be a loyal housewife. They don't know how to express their feelings to one another that well but you see it if you watch them.
Edith let a lot of things go by. But she showed her tolerance level only went so far on occasions like this when she let Archie know "enough is enough." Everybody comes to a point like that when dealing with certain people or certain circumstances. BRAVA, Edith!!!! 🧡🧡🧡
Lol Edith shocked herself every time she said something back to Archie. It just goes to show what people have down on the inside, if they're willing to use it.
Back then women were third class citizens and children had fewer rights than the African-American community. It was a disgusting time period! This alone was the very least of the sins. The biggest atrocity is forcing Christian prayer in public schools which is wildly unconstitutional
I have to admit Edith should’ve talked to Archie about the wedding before offering the place to that couple. I wouldn’t like the person I lived with offering our home to strangers for their wedding without discussing it with me. Maybe then Archie would’ve scheduled the trip on a different day.
I remember a Thanksgiving about 50 years ago when there were about 20 family members at my grandparents house, and nana was upset with something or someone and said loudly “damn it”. There was stunned silence and you could hear the proverbial pin drop. In the 33 years I knew her that was the only time I heard her say anything negative. What an angel she was
