I am a small lady who just inherited a 2006 V8 limited 4runner with only 22k miles as in 22,000 miles pristine and well maintained and eventually i want to tow my own trailer and this is the first vídeo i watched 🎉
I second whatever you said. Well done. My wife and I traveled almost 35000 miles so far since 2019 with our TRD pro and similar trailer. Agree on all tips and observations. I used Blue ox weight distribution as well. My conclusion is 4Runner is a monster for off-roading and towing is icing on cake. I strongly second your point on keeping speed under 60 mph. For many reasons. First and most important is your trailer tiers are not rated for more. Thanks for making this video.
Congratulations on your marriage! Wishing you a lifetime of happiness together. 👍 Thank you for sharing your trip experience. Many valuable lessons learned. I have found the 4Runner to be reliable and dependable and built to take rough handling. I love my 4Runner. ❤️
I towed a trailer a little bit heavier that yours across the US. Up mountains the first of the trip then mostly flat land the rest. I was getting 6-7mpg up the mountains and through the flat areas I was averaging just under 9mpg. For speed up the mountains it capped at about 50mph and flat I kept it at 60-70 depending on the road.
8:28 smart man, all about the arm of your object. That distance from the axle makes it seem a lot heavier to your trailer. One major thing taught to pilots about center of gravity or CG. try holding a 3ft long stick from the tip with just your hand now slide it down 6 inches and hold it. How much easier is it
Just started the video, I bet NOTHING broke down! 4runner baby. 13 min later, just finished. CALLED IT! I did a similar trip with my 2011 Mitsubishi outlander with a 3500lb trailer and it performed quite well but I'm getting a 4runner to replace it for better towing power and off road ability. But the Outlander gets 9L per 100k per 100k, so waayyy better economy than a 4runner.
What am I missing here? If this V8 4Runner has a tow rating of 7000lbs., why on earth would it not be pre wired and prepped for towing "with" trailer brakes from the factory? 7000lbs of "un braked" towing seems crazy. Glad you thought ahead and got some sort of trailer brake controller. But for this vehicle's tow rating, that should've already come with the vehicle. Thanks for sharing and congrats on getting married.
Just drove a rented RV from Southern Ontario to the east coast. I’d like to do it again but tow a small camper with my 4th Gen V6. Will take your tips and learnings into account for sure. Thank you.
I own a 2005 limited v8 with a 3in lift same tire size Goodyear Wrangler Duramax's . I tow an old trailer I rebuilt deep into the Adirondacks with my 3kids every summer. I enjoyed the video.
Thank you for the video. I have a nearly identical v8 4runner with same lift/springs. I’ve always wanted to tow a small travel trailer but never had the confidence until watching this trailer. Just installed a trailer brake controller and the trailer I plan on towing has a weight distribution system.
Was great following you guys on Insta during the trip! Too bad you didn't make it to Vancouver Island, but maybe next time! Thanks for the video recap!
Everyone should drive across and up and down Canada. I get to travel across Canada for work and often drive. Canada is an amazing place. I just got to drive the Dempster Highway this year. I made a short video of it on my channel. It would be a great road for your 4 Runner.
Very sensible point about only pushing the truck's off roading to 30% since you depended on it so much. I have a 16' long 3000lb trailer and I'm debating between the 4th gen 4runner vs the 1st gen tundra as a tow vehicle
Congrats on getting hitched! Great report on your towing experience. I really like that size and the shape of the camper. With a little paint and some matching wheels and a very small lift it could be a perfect match. hahah. I really like your lights you added to the hatch and your comments on the headers. The month long journey across your beautiful country with your honey and your 4 Runner might be the best kind of vacation too. I like the brake controller btw, very cool and was a smart addition for your journey.
Hey man, awesome trip. Thanks for the upload. Congratulations on getting married! Very interesting... I too got married last year and drove my 2007 v8 4runner with a double axle utility trailer, (5,700 lbs loaded!), from Calgary to Nova Scotia. I didn't use a weight distributer hitch and no problems with swaying, (as I too was concerned). The trailer was well balanced. Power was also a non issue. Drove 90-95 kms on average. So, I have the cracked manifold. 😩. Been driving with it now for over a year!! 😬 I simply must get Doug Thorley shorty headers before the end of this year. So overdue. Also contemplating the Gibson cat back. If you had to do it all over again, is there anything you might change, or do differently with the Gibson cat back/DT headers setup? Or, in your opinion, is this the optimal setup for our 4runners? (aside from stock exhaust). I ask because I am probably looking at about $3000-$3500, and that is a good chunk of change. Thanks and cheers from Cape Breton.
@@CanadianGearhead Agree with the legality, plus I hear guys hating the smell of their exhaust without the cats. Not for me, as my 4runner is my daily. Cheers man.
Thank you for sharing the great informative video, and congrats on your marriage. I am looking to buy a similar config like yours. I am looking to buy a used Toyota 4Runner Limited or Lexus GX460 to tow a travel trailer similar to the one on the video. How was the experience of camper water/sewer hook up, and do you downshift when going down steep mountains to assist the braking?
Have the same rig, would tow a trailer like that around locally within an hour or two but never anywhere long distances, old is old. Mine was also on a tow truck twice last year. CHECK YOUR BRAKE LINES. Mine blew one (rust) and I lost all brakes in rush hour traffic on a 4 lane busy road. The second time a rear Bilstein came loose at the bottom bolt because the super awesome and bad azz 4x4 shop clearly didnt torque it down - that was fun at 6pm on a Friday night in the middle of nowhere in the middle of February. Not really the 4runners fault but twice needing to be towed in a month is daunting.
What size fuel tank you have? I’m worried about getting a travel trailer for our highlander, heard when towing one you have to fill up every 100miles. Doesn’t sound fun. Spots in Montana and Wyoming would have to plan out lol Good video 🍻
Good trip report! I guess I'm confused about the trailer brake controller. My 08 V8 Limited was factory configured/pre-wired for the controller. I just had to buy the box and proper adapter and it was plug-and-play. BTW, my cross-country towing experience matches yours, as far as fuel economy, California to Michigan. It was painful!
Nice video! Believe or not I saw the similar 4runner down to the road few times in kitchener and that was 3 or 4 years ago, and now I think that's you for sure lol. Also the sound of v8 and the modified height is pretty iconic, and it's actually looks higher in real life though.
Just Married?? WTFlock??? I thought you were already married lol Congratulations!!!!! Concerned?? The only things which break on the 4th gens are brake calipers, Alternators, little odds and ends.. But that's about it. As LONG as you maintain the TB/WP job(Belts and pullies) of course. I am at the 3:28 minute mark in the video, so let me get back to it.. lol Edit: Ohh yeah, and the dreaded Exhaust Manifolds. But I think you've already changed them to Doug Thorley's correct? either way.. back to the video.
I was going to buy a 4-Runner and a small trailer. I found out that the max trailer weight would be 3,000 lbs based on tow capacity of 5,000.. 3,000 trailer + 350 tonque + 300 water + 350 passengers = 4,000 lbs. + variation of elevation + foods. Any more would be unsafe. Besides, 4-Runner strained up the hill with 3.000 ls trailer with max. of 60 MPH at third gear.
Seems like you had a perfect trip! Driving a 4th gen T4R with a V8, newlywed, towing, Joe Rogan podcast on the road, RV camping, biking and a little offroad. You just did everything the vehicle was designed for and I'm jealous! I notice your V8 tow hitch is different than mine and it's integrated into the bumper like the v6. Did you do a swap? Mine hangs low and wide..
It felt great to truly get the full 4runner experience! The hitch is weird - the best I can figure is that some Canadian spec V8s were sold with a V6 hitch
Yeah, I think they say that because it's the safest option. Otherwise people will be bogging it down in overdrive on steep climbs and blaming Toyota for any damage
How do you think the V6 would have towed that camper? My aunt really wants a 4th gen 4Runner and she wants to tow a trailer just like yours for camping but most of the time it will just be a run around vehicle. I'm trying to talk her into getting a V8 model although they are more expensive and quite rare just because I think it would tow much better. What are your thoughts?
Im fixin to go from south of georgia to central america I have litte fergusson on double axle trailer wich both make litte bit over of 5000 lb. Im worry about the weight I have 2004 4runner sr5 v6
Can you send me a link to the curt bluetooth towing wire harness? Thanks. I will be taking a 3rd gen across the usa from cost to cost and back. But i will only be towing a tear drop trailer. Its about 1000 lbs.

The Tundra would likely tow a bit better but the 4runner would have other strong points
I have an 03 tundra, it tows great. Looking at 4th gen 4runners now since the family is growing

As far as how to correct a squirrely trailer; that wasn't common knowledge to me so thanks man!

I thought the owners manual said we’re supposed to tow in 4th gear only? My guess is absolutely nothing broke, it’s a V8 4runner!
Yeah, I think they say that because it's the safest option. Otherwise people will be bogging it down in overdrive on steep climbs and blaming Toyota for any damage

It would probably be fine under normal circumstances, the V8 really shines in the mountains

I love it! I did a video on it here and also a how to article on the site
That sure looks like a large trailer for the 4 runner. What are the weights of each?
We had it pretty loaded up so it was probably a bit over 3600 lbs or so. These V8 models are rated to pull 7000

I’m gonna guess… starter! Mine is “starting” to go! Should have the weight distribution hitch with sway control… my 2010 was far safer towing a 16bhs.
Ooo… redarc… top notch btw
Redarc plugged right in to the 4runner and came with the wiring.
I got ran off the 401 in a construction zone… wdh with sway control saved our lives.
Quick question...what is the name of the plastic around your window?
The window visors? They're from AVS
Is your spare a 285 as well?
No I actually did a narrower size that's still the same outside diameter, or close enough at least
