I like the Cinefix Top 10s like this because they're ranked in unique categories, and it's not necessarily that number 10 is a lesser film than number 1.

The only problem is you're limiting yourself to only having one film in each category, meaning if there were a lot more great horror films this year, you'd have to leave most of them out. This is especially a problem with the foreign films category, as it's not a film genre.

I guess is a matter of opinion but not it's not always the case for me, still I love their lists usually give attention to lesser known or popular film that deserve more attention, and gives me a list to watch for myself, but sometimes after watching some of these, I can't agree they are among the best of the year as much as I'd like to, but again it may just be a matter of opinion but I try to judge films objectively, there are some that I don't like but agree they are good regardless of my own taste like challengers, it has good elements but I can't say that I liked it, nor any Luca film I've seen for that matter.

@@atrevino90 Yeah, I understand. What I like about CineFix is more about the variety and quantity of the good films they mention regardless if they are the actual picks or not. I feel that I always come out of these videos knowing something new about what happened in the film world that I would have never known about otherwise. Other top 10 films of the year videos generally have pretty similar picks and opinions but CineFix always brings something new to the table.
In regards to the Luca films, I can 100% get the aversion towards them. It is perfectly ok to not love the way Luca makes his movies. I really enjoyed Call Me By Your Name for example but I don't understand how up in a pedestal some people put it on. However, I still need to watch Challengers to have an opinion on that.

Always a pleasure to watch a Cinefix list, but dawg you gotta see The Nickel Boys. Best prestige drama no question.
Other missed points: For comedy I feel like A Different Man was pretty good, for foreign film How to Make Millions Before Grandma Dies broke me (though all we imagine as light, I’m still here, & sacred fig all at least deserve a mention), Count of Monte Cristo was a surprisingly great action, and though I’m sure you don’t wanna get demonetized No Other Land was easily the most GOATed doc I’ve seen this year. Daughters was also a pretty dope doc
Just some food for thought. Always love the Cinefix lists. Hope yall make more in 2025

Last year, CineFix picked an anti-Korea propaganda film for best documentary. I haven't seen "No Other Land," but I assume it's a more authentic document of what's been happening in Palestine for many years.

@@waynechapman9823 yeah I saw Beyond Utopia and didn't really fw it. I'm all for a movie about the horror of dictatorship (though you're 100% right those horrors are abetted by US sanctions among other global policy) and to its credit there was some devastating found footage and harrowing first-person accounts, but it totally overstayed its welcome. Not at all comprehensive, and a lot of hacky, clichéd, overscored, and sometimes voyeuristic/exploitative filmmaking choices that undermined legitimate points. The way pastor Kim Sungeun kept preaching Christianity to people who like literally knew jackshit didn't sit right with me - like it felt more less mission work than actual aid. Felt like something out of the 90s (pejorative). Haven't seen a ton of films about North Korea, but Park Chan-wook's Joint Security Area is by far my favorite.
No Other Land isn't perfect, but it's pretty good (I haven't seen a TON of docs this year). It follows the destruction of a rural community in the West Bank through the eyes of a Palestinian activist and an Israeli documentarian, all taking place before 10/7/23. What I really liked about it is how it shows both apartheid, not just in settlement policy but in how Palestinians dont have equal access to roads, constructing infrastructure, and just fundamentally don't have equal rights rn, and also a great demonstration of how Palestinians are fighting back by means no one can really argue with it. Probably the most comprehensive depiction of Israeli apartheid I've seen, though 5 Broken Cameras is also pretty good maybe even better. As affecting as the footage is, by the second half, it starts to become a bit redundant. Definitely could've used some trimming esp in its 3rd quarter. Still great though. Even though ik it doesn't have a US distributor and it didn't have to be #1, it at least deserved a shoutout.
I like Cinefix a lot and the year-end lists are always going to be the most fraught, but this one was pretty sussy baka

@@HaagentheDazs I said last year that I like CineFix cause they know movies very well, but they don’t have the same level of awareness when it comes to global politics. Propaganda films can be very well made, and perhaps they can be acknowledged on that level like Leni Riefenstahl’s have been, but I would rather avoid films that the CIA is using to brainwash you into wanting another country’s government to be overthrown. The U.S. government isn’t trying to bring democracy to other countries. They’re not even interested in supporting democracy in the U.S.!

In 2023, you had two major Oscar-nominated films that addressed the slaughter of people of a dehumanized race: “Killers of the Flower Moon” and “The Zone of Interest.” I think the latter was CineFix’s top film of last year, but there was no mention of Gaza as though crimes against humanity can only be discussed when they’re safely in the distant past. You completely miss the point of a film like that when you can’t apply its message to what’s going on in the present or has been going on under the radar for decades. Do you really have a moral center if you support neo-Nazis in Ukraine and avoid talking about the mass murder of children in Gaza?

@carmawarlock8455 Trans character is no problem, the main reason is a poor treatment in a very delicate subject such as people in the drug cartel crossfire. One of the worst romanticized narco-stories I have ever seen. I love musicals and I praise the idea behind the movie but the execution is terrible; Selina Gomez despite being a good actress, doesn’t even know the lines coming out of her mouth, I have read her “apologies” for her bad Spanish and her character being a mexican-american living in México but as a Spanish speaker I can tell you, nobody talks like she does in the movie, it’s so cringy and awful (beyond Breaking Bad Spanish hahaha). Karla Sofia Gascon X account is by now one of the most toxic zone I have ever seen. And finally, producers and everyone involved in the movie are so aware of the disaster that intentionally it hasn’t even released officially in Mexico.

    • @carmawarlock8455
      @carmawarlock8455 17 годин тому

@daniel-lara haha Spanish and French speakers are hilarious, you get so uptight with how your language is pronounced. If English speakers banned every movie where a foreigner mangled our language there'd like two movies a year. And then if we banned movies that oversensationalized our gangs there would be no movies. I think you should be way more concerned about the media trying to convince your children to sterilize themselves, but to each their own

I really liked _Nosferatu_ but if I'm being honest, it doesn't make even my top 3 movies (or horror movies) of the year. That is not a cut on _Nosferatu_ but a giant compliment to those other films that it failed to unseat. In my humble opinion, _Strange Darling_ and _The Substance_ far surpassed it, and _Woman of the Hour_ was at least on the same level. It's one reason I hate picking the "best" of any year, because some years have 6 bests to offer, and other years don't offer a thing.

I'm really happy to see an old-fashioned CineFix top 10. It wasn't until I was working on my own retrospective for this year that I realized just how much those old lists shaped the way I think about the movies I consider "the best."
My top 5 for the year:
    5. Deadpool & Wolverine
    4. Longlegs
    3. Hundreds of Beavers
    2. Abigail
    1. Joker: Folie à Deux.
Yes, Folie à Deux really is my favorite film of the year. It is so ridiculously overhated and I've only fallen more deeply in love with it every day that goes by. And as much as I loved Nosferatu, I did just see it this afternoon so I think it's probably best to give it a bit of time and another rewatch or two before trying to rank it.
Oh, and if we're not counting Hundreds of Beavers as a 2024 film, Kinds of Kindness moves up to the 5th place spot with Wicked just barely behind it.

Rebel Ridge was a very great surprise film. Slow burn and enticing, but smarter than most action films that make you expect violence and blood, but it doesn’t give itself away too easily.

I could only agree with 5 of your choices:
    - Conclave
    - Challengers
    - Nosferatu
    - The Substance
    - Dune Part 2
For the other 5 I’d go with:
    - Anora
    - Wicked
    - The Wild Robot
    - Hundreds of Beavers
    - The Brutalist

I have to tell on myself a bit. First, I've watched your channel for years, and sadly, I used to think you would add in foreign or old movies, like Seven Samurai, just to be like, "oh, look at us, we're deep and atypical." But then I started watching some of these films that seem far from the beaten path, and I have to say, its given me a deeper appreciation for not just movies, but, "cinema." I'm glad to say that I was wrong, and even more happy that you've separated yourselves from the rest of the faux cinephiles and grifters. Thanks for opening my eyes a little more.

I’m sorry but Challengers was not good. It was meandering and randomly over stylized. It toyed with the Y Tú Mama storyline but with zero charm. The acting was fine enough though the characters had almost no arc. While the ending leaves you wanting… something besides wasting two plus hours of your time.

Glad Challengers, Conclave, The Substance, Nosferatu, & Dune pt 2 were brought up (plus Flow for the tangent). Two of my favorite films from this year that went unmentioned would be Nickel Boys & Look Back (the latter easily one of the best animated films of the year in a weak year despite its short runtime and I haven't stopped thinking about it since October).
I also really want to see All We Imagine As Light, if it had a limited screening run I missed it haha
