I lived in Castle Combe back in 1976. The house(s) I lived in you can see just to the right at the end of the bridge 1:11 and 6:45 the one with the peaked entrance. The house belonged to my then fiancee's parents. The house in fact consists of two houses. The stone faced house and the white house beside it. They purchased both houses and connected them. We lived there for 6 months. It was very quiet indeed. Back then, as today there were no street lights. There were two pubs in the Market Square. One for the locals and one for the tourists. The one for the locals had a parrot and a beer drinking dog. This is the village where they filmed part of the original Dr Doolittle movie. Fun fact the wall along the creek was built for the movie Dr. Doolittle and only dates from the 1960's. The only problem we used to have was when buses of tourists would visit the village. They thought that no one lived in the houses and they often just walked into the house unannounced. That was always fun.

@@MAINER4779 The movie crew actually rebuilt the bridge as well. I watch the movie because my then fiancee's father can be seen sitting in the upstairs window during the scene they filmed along side the "river". He was so furious that he refused to move out of the window during the shooting. I also noticed that cars drive through the town. When we lived there no cars were ever allowed through the town. Since there are no street lights in town walking home from the pub was a bit tricky. Also all those "shoppes" did not exist when I lived there. We used to walk on the Manor House grounds. We had permission from the Manor House.

I don't seem to mind I love children so it is a delight when they stop by.

Just went to this amazing place today and a couple of things have changed as the Wadworth restaurant has closed, but the Castle Inn across the street was beautiful and had amazing food and service!
The other thing that has changed is we could not get into the Manor House gates as they were closed, so you were very lucky to see it and drive through it.
A lot of the shops were closed too which we had come across that you walked past as well, but the bakery goods were still out for other people to chose from and buy which Is still awesome.
We also spent a lot of time in the town taking photos and in the Church and the bridge.
Such a scenic ride in and out. One never to be forgotten.

Lovely video of Castle Coombe guys! We’re so fortunate to still have many beautiful villages like this around the UK. However in the summer months it’s rammed with tourists with parking up a nightmare. Shopkeepers I would imagine do very well, but for the local residencies, it’s the price they pay for living in an archetypal English village. So you we’re obviously there at the right time. Cheers!

53 yearsago, I was working in Bournemouth not far from CC. I had applied for a job in the US and was almost certain to get it as so many Americans were in the military fighting the VN war and US companies were recruiting heavily in the UK. I got a letter, did not open it. I had the day off so drove to CC and had a pub lunch. I opened the letter and read it sitting outside this beautiful old pub. I emigrated six weeks later. So CC has a particular place in my life.

This is not the first time America looked for able and willing men from Europe to work in America. My grandfather, Leo, at the age of 16 sent a letter to Henry Ford at the Ford Factory to work in America. He arrived from Italy knowing only a few words and $3 to his name. He promised Henry Ford in the letter never to miss one day of work and in 52 years he never missed one day of work. My grandfather was a man of his word and was a good friend of Henry Ford.

@Michael Walton Sir, Saikat is a hindu bengali name and he is a hindu. We hindus have never attacked any country , never enslaved anyone on the basis of culture, race or religion. British has looted us but we aren't taught to hate british or anyone. We believe in " Vasudhiva Kutumbakam"( its a sanskrit word) which means " The whole world is a single family. " We are spiritual , a true hindu can never ever have materialistic thoughts. Don't compare us with " Peacefuls" ( M...ms) . Rather I would say you should visit our Motherland India once and must visit our temples ( I am not telling you to embrace hinduism, never , I am requesting you to see how we live , you can get the positive vibes). England will be a great place if you deport all the " peacefuls" .

Its difficult, because India is a densely populated country. At any point of time there are always a lot of people on the roads.
Try to keep busy, because we have been in lockdown since March. Things are slowly opening up. But its difficult in a crowded city.
You said you liked the video. I think Ireland has a lot of beautiful places as well. .. there are beautiful places in the interiors of India. But the European countries have a charm of their own.

      @@Michael-bf1dt hello Michael,
      Yes I am really busy.
Lot of time goes in taking care of ourselves because of covid.
Have to sanitize everything. Especially door handles, and things like that.
I live in an apartment. There are strict rules around, but we have trades people coming into the building for work purposes. So constantly on our toes.
I'm in the management committee of the apartment, so have a lot of stuff to be dealt with.
We have to be so cautious. There were 20,000 cases of covid in 1 day.
India is expected to soon take over the no.1 position in the world.
Anyway, hope you all are doing fine.
We also have a festival happening this week. We have a shrine devoted to our lady in this suburb,,,,where I live.
      It's over 100 years old.
      And its celebrated in September.
And although, because of the covid there are no celebrations. Still try to keep up the traditions .
Which means lots of cooking. I belong to a community called the East Indians.
Who live in the west ...that's a bit funny.
But in 15th century, Portuguese came to India. Locals converted to catholic religion. That's why I have the surname Fernandes. But ,later on British came to India. My grandfather worked for the East India company. and locally we have a community called Maharashtra.
We have a culture, a combinations of the 3. We follow a blend of the 3 cultures.
With this, our cuisine is a blend of the 3.
So gonna be busy cooking and preparing traditional dishes. That's the only part of the feast we can have now, because of covid. So busy.!!!
      Sorry writing too much.
Tell me some of Irish traditions.
Gotta cut this short as I have to go out.

People were much smaller, is one reason, but over time I think the ground has dropped under the weight of the stones...Also, in castles, the stone staircase was built to be tight, and the steps went in a right spiral, so invaders would be made to use their left arm for sword fights...

You should try Matlock in Derbyshire & also Lynton & Lynmouth in Devon.

Thanks Sharon, we have done Matlock just before it got flooded, lovely fish & chips 😋. I would imagine Devon as being a bit busy at the moment 🦆💕

Not yet been to Castle Combe myself yet as I have no car...but it looks nice. Thanks for sharing this. Some of my favourite Oxfordshire Cotswolds villages include Minster Lovell, Asthal, Swinbrook- which are all within 10km of each other, so make for a good walk or bike ride.

We’re living in Canada again now. We’d love to go back to the UK and visit friends. Would love to see some of those villages next time. Cheers

Please tell me, which small village is the most easy to get to from London without a car? I'm going to London in May and Äi want to visit one(or two) pretty village by train or by bus!

    • @JonAlycia

It’s tough to say because often buses don’t go to the small villages. This one is only accessible by car, as far as I’m aware. Hopefully some other people will see this and be able to make their own suggestions.
I recommend taking a bus to Bath. It’s a lovely place! With lots of Roman History
