Cozyness, even after a funeral, it can, sometimes in the after thought, be considded having being cozy sitting down for a bite to eat and talk and sharing about nice things you have experience with the deceased.
I think I just had a moment of personal realisation while watching this. I all of a sudden started thinking about how often I use the word 'hyggeligt' about stuff. I mean, it was pretty hyggeligt to paint my terrarium earlier today. It was also hyggeligt just lying in my bed while listening to a podcast and writing notes in my calendar. My friend is picking me up at work tomorrow and my response was: 'hyggeligt' My dad got released from the hospital after a blood clot scare today and went home and sat down to watch The Repair Shop with coffee and my mom and when I spoke to him about it I said 'aw, how hyggeligt.' ... I might be having a small existential crisis.
Nah you're using the word perfectly fine. Because hygge can be all those things, there's no threshold for how many people or what kind of setting it should be, for you to have a hyggelig time.
Me too 😅 I never thought about it, but he’s absolutely right -we say it all the time. It doesn’t quite mean cozy though. A sofa can be cozy or a jacket. We wouldn’t call neither 'hyggelig'. Hygge is more like a mood or atmosphere. A party can be fun, nice, hyggelig but I wouldn’t call a party cozy. Cozy is more like a physical thing, hygge is a state of mind. Another person can be hyggelig 😅 I don’t use cozy to describe personality, but a person can be 'hyggelig' 😅

We need to appreaciate the people who sacrifice for us to keep the lejlighedssang alive. My mom is the same and I adore it for her. She'll even write a little one when her colleague has a birthday at the office or something. It's adorable.
The personal songs is also used for graduation parties, weddeings or any type of anyversary. It is a very fun thing and sometimes you learn something new about a person that the writer knew 😊
It’s funny because when I was younger we used to have birthdays/parties with songs all the time, but now it’s been at least a decade since the last time. We just sort of all agreed that we didn’t like it all that much, so my family stopped doing it. But your perspective does make me realise that it is kind of a unique and very Danish tradition, and it would be a shame if it went away… even if my family doesn’t enjoy it ;)

Despite being dragged across a river to an old military island area with about 8 other family members , getting wet, while raining a lot (lår-fede stråler), night is coming, so we seek shelter in a trailer, there’s a lightning storm above us and a screaming mother because some hunter came barged in with a hunting rifle (it was his trailer) asking if he could join us… it stops raining so we get back in a muddy landscape, picking empty ammo shells along the way, crossing the water again and in our cars… anyways. Thinking back on this it was actually quite Hyggeligt. True story from my childhood 😂 amazing memories.
Remember at the announcement of Princess Mary engagement to Frederick she got moved by the fact there were as many Australian flags as danish flags at the greeting on the square... To be included really means something ...
I just found out recently that 'lejlighedssange' - familiar melodies with new lyrics written for a special occasion - was a very danish thing. I thought most countries/cultures did that. Hyggelig video btw. Thx!
Fredagsslik used to be lørdagsslik. But when DR started Disney sjov friday evening at 7 pm, the tradition slowly shifted from saturday to friday. It was back in the early 90's.
One birthday tradition that I love but is sadly not that widespread is that we whisper one hurra per year (counting on the fingers and looking at each other in excited anticipation, trying to see if everyone is on the same count) and then shout the last hurra out loud (hopefully at the same time). It takes a surprising amount of time to whisper hurra 90 times 😅 (and makes for a hilarious moment when a small child gets scared because everybody suddenly starts shouting 😂)
I mean it is my impression for kids birthdays it gets done a lot, but yeah, once you reach up in the adult years, it's just too many to do. MAYBE you do like one hurra per 10 years at that point, if at all... I really can't imagine doing 90 hurra's... I respect the dedication, though if you do, do that
I love that one too! In my school we would start out whispering "First (name) became 1 year old, hurra, then (name) became 2 years old, hurra" and so on, and the volume would get louder and louder until we came to how old they were turning today, where everyone would shout "hurra". I've experienced the version you're describing too though. We actually tried to do that with my mom's birthday once, and she immediately tried to stop us from counting all the years 😂
the songs you describe is called lejlighedssange, loosely translated to festive songs, they are more commenly used at confirmations and weddings rather than birthdays (but also at round birthdays)
You didn’t mention how we also “scream” it’s just a soft “ahhh” when cutting the head of the cake man. And yes, it is mostly done for kids birthdays, coz kids tend to find it fun and or funny. And well, it is.
You should've mentioned that it's important to cut the throat of the cake man first while every guest screams through the cut 😂 And the personalized songs are also really common at confirmations and weddings/wedding anniversaries 😊 And the lyrics sheets must include a mixture of cute, funny and goofy pictures of the person being celebrated 😁
Perhaps your most adorable video yet, sans the ominous section about the kagemand (I've got my first adult round birthday soon, should I be worried?). I was really happy you mentioned the singing aspect - when Ive visited other countries Ive noticed that there just arent a lot of occassions for singing outside of church. Growing up here we'd all get together to sing happy birthday for each other, our teachers, the school principal ect. Then we'd sing the holiday song before going off for the summer, we'd sing a lot of traditional songs in Danish class, and then there are of course confirmations, christmas parties, 1st of May celebrations, starting new jobs, weddings, funerals and all that jazz too where one might have a song ready. My polish fiance reports having never sung much before she got to Denmark.
I think you haven't fully understood "hygge", it's not something we say just to be positive or optimistic about less-cozy things, it's because a lot of things in life are HYGGELIGT and it's great!
I said hyggeligt, I know hygge came up on the screen (editor is French, it's not his fault haha). I think my understanding of hygge is that it's like beauty, defined by each person and you know it when you see/experience it 😊
Well Danes are kind of optimistic about not so fantastic things. As the saying goes "nothing is so bad it's not good for something". (Intet er så galt at det ikke er godt for noget.)
I actually think it is a very accurate and interesting observation that we often understand hygge as a contrast to something not so nice. Like at first the party was very stiff and formal or people were shy and self-conscious, but then later on some of us gathered up in the kitchen and it became very hyggeligt. Nice video!
the Candy on fridays also go into if we go some years back we usually got together with the kids to watch Disney show friday evening with snacks. and yes it helps to do snacks in moderations. yes we often use our flag in different celebrations. the songs are made for most bigger celebrations not only round birthdays, but also for weddings and Confirmations, but ofc you need to make them in coordination with the party planner so they know how many makes songs, and it is usually only the closest to the ones who are being celebrated that makes the songs.

I've personally had ton of cringy yet adorable songs been sung for me, by my parents, sister, friends and extended family. It's always a great time.
I have a note to 2 of your points. No.1: In regards to waving flags at someone when they arrive at the airport. In the Olsenbanden (Olsen Gang) films, most, if not all, the times Egon is released from prison, Benny and Kjeld is waiting there waving with flags. No. 2: When danes are making personal lyrics to known song at special occations I see it mostly at Confirmations (Entering adulthood ceremony)
I don't think we had the first 3 things you mentioned in the 60tiesor 70ties, but I do remember the flag thing and of course we always have a flag on the birthday table. Song writing was a big thing in my family, but the best part was the sang skjuler (song hider). My dad's family was always the best at that, e.g. at my confirmation they had made a pool and diving board with a doll on the diving board with a picture of my face. The songs were rolled up and formed the water in the pool, I was big into diving at that time 😊. There was also mini me's dancing around the pool plus me playing the guitar, so my pass times were well represented.
I think Friday candy tradition really got started or became more popular, when we got the Disney Cartoon Show at 7 PM each Friday in the 80s. Over time "Disney Sjov (fun)" would also become a humoristic expression covering certain other activities between adults, while your children were glued to their Disney cartoons on the TV screen 😂
at mi 50 ears birthday one of my finds had redden a song that ware totally impossible to sing on the chosen melody so we all had a lot of fun whit that one
Personally, I’ve experienced me make personalized song lyrics more often for confirmations, weddings, or round birthdays, rather than regular birthdays
Even though Danish people grow up with high standard of life, their mentality is so inspiring, you can take everything away from them and they will find happiness and calm. An amazing culture to be a part of, truly inspiring.
why we also stand with flags at an airport (can also be done at a ship) is because we also sweep that the person came to us alive from their travels, it comes from the Viking Age (it was/is dangerous to travel after all) and not all emerge alive (some dead) either in war or in a storm at sea, etc. We took that with us as things can also happen when you fly, etc., so we are happy to see the person and happy that they came to us, etc.😊 a bit like in the Viking Age we could make it a small party in the big building and drink mjød and eat (celebrate that a friend has come to you and is in good health and alive) etc.😊 so a day of joy😊
Re. the songs, which are called lejlighedssange (as in the occasion mening of lejlighed), it’s not uncommon for parents to tell their children, when they do something that is a bit stupid or unfortunate and funny, that “that will be in the confirmation song”. Of course not everything is gong in the song, it’s really a “line trotting” to get the right amount of characteristic stuff and fun stuff and perhaps an embarassing story that most people probably already know in the song. Singing together is really healthy, and it strengthens relationships. And we do it a lot. Just think of fredagsfællessang during Covid. 👍😊
Hygge is coping with the harsh, isolating winter and marketing to sell products. They will sell you food, candles, they will use it for tourism... marketing. The ranking about happiness is kind of a joke, not a serious publication. Denmark is always in the top 3 in alcoholism and mental health issues are very common (of course, the weather, the isolation). The stereotype is strong, but the truth is that they have low expectations and a really really good culture around health and money (small country with oil reserves, very industrialized and technologically advanced).
I was today years old when I realised the rest of the world didn't write personal party songs... also I might mention the tradition with sticking flags in birthday cake, is also unique danish, and I realised that sometime last year hahaha
haha, I've heard from a lot of people that they always thought it was a "birthday flag". It's not impossible that someone would write a personalized song BUT in the USA where I'm from as an example, it would be a very rare and unique thing. I would be very surprised if someone did that at a party and more surprised if everyone actually got into it and participated. It would maybe be your one friend who is very into musical theatre or saw Wicked 20 times 😂 but no one would focus or put down their drinks and it would probably flop haha.
you wouldnt normally just get handed a song that someone wrote,it has to be in a sangskjuler,a thing that is made to make the papers with the song look interesting or pretty, the sheets can be folded into flowers, be put in a paper mache model of something that has to do with the person getting celebrated, sometimes people almost spend more time on that than on the song. And winter IS cozy season,we watch series on tv,,bake,do indoorstuff. As soon as we can stay outside without jackets on many people are outside, if you look at how many are out on a wednesday at 20 in january and one in june there will be a huge difference, especially outside the city,we live in the suburbs and it sometimes looks like we live in some rural area at this time of the year.
It's true that sangskjulere ("song hiders") are a thing, but I personally haven't encountered one for decades, despite having participated in the singing of many personalised songs. I've been considering sangskjulere basically a thing of the past, but now I'm thinking that I may be wrong. If so, why is it that I never see them anymore? Hmm.
My sister had a tradition when her children (now grandchildren, and grand grandchildren) wiath the "kagemand": He have to be beheaded first, you can't eat him/her alive. When it been beheaded all guests scream.
Fredagsslik use to be lørdagsslik (Saturday candy) - This was actually a way to reduce candy consumption, you just told them the could all the candy they wanted Saturday evening (Later Friday evening) - and you can't actually eat that much candy in one go, especially after a warm meal !! It was the dentists that came up with the idea, if I remember correctly. And when you are talking about "hygge" coziness - (Best translation) - it's actually a Scandinavian thing, the winters are so darn dark in Denmark - In Sweden the at least have snow during most of the winter. That makes the darkness less dark. But even Copenhagen is actually the same latetude at the southern part of the Hudson Bay and the southern part of Alaska - it's north of Mongolia - a good part of Siberia is more southern. It explains why we need to have "hygge".And the cake men are the best on Fuen (Fyn) just you know it !
That's some very on the surface unwritten traditions of the danes. So unwritten that most people don't do it anymore. Just sometimes some people get nostalgic.
I have honestly not had a kagemand since i was a small kid in school? I really didnt know people got them for round birthdays, but perhaps its just the people i hang around with who dosent do that? My best friend is a baker (soon also a kondittor) even and she only made one kagemand for her 2 small kids 😅
Vi har også den søde (hyggelige)😊 tradition, at ved bryllupper når brudeparret danser, står gæsterne i en cirkel omkring brudeparret og klapper, mens cirklen hele tiden bliver mindre og brudeparret til sidst må stoppe.
I hate the winter, but some Danes say that then you will appreciate the summer more. On the other hand, the long summer evenings are awesome - and you can't have both. (Jeg hader vinteren, men nogle danskere siger at du vil værdsætte sommeren mere. På den anden, de lange sommeraftner er awesome - og du kan ikke få begge dele).
i remember as a child we would scream (on behalf of the cake) when the cakeman got cut. maybe a bit morbid, but it was fun😅
Yeah .. when he/she was beheaded .. kinda morbid 😂

Over time "Disney Sjov (fun)" would also become a humoristic expression covering certain other activities between adults, while your children were glued to their Disney cartoons on the TV screen 😂
The songs are also common at konfirmationer or sometimes weddings^^
FYI: kagemand for adults has nothing to do with round birthdays 😊 Some people just like the tradition of a kagemand for their birthday.
Nice video
Spot on 😅
at mi 50 ears birthday one of my finds had redden a song that ware totally impossible to sing on the chosen melody so we all had a lot of fun whit that one
Free day cake is the best!
Jazz up🎉👍❤️ i like the way you dress up Danish Word.. tak 😁
why we also stand with flags at an airport (can also be done at a ship) is because we also sweep that the person came to us alive from their travels, it comes from the Viking Age (it was/is dangerous to travel after all) and not all emerge alive (some dead) either in war or in a storm at sea, etc. We took that with us as things can also happen when you fly, etc., so we are happy to see the person and happy that they came to us, etc.😊 a bit like in the Viking Age we could make it a small party in the big building and drink mjød and eat (celebrate that a friend has come to you and is in good health and alive) etc.😊 so a day of joy😊
you are such a nice guy, 🥳👍
aww, mange tak 🥰
Well to be cute is our speciality 🌹😏
It just occured to me that we actually are a really optimistic people ❤
Re. the songs, which are called lejlighedssange (as in the occasion mening of lejlighed), it’s not uncommon for parents to tell their children, when they do something that is a bit stupid or unfortunate and funny, that “that will be in the confirmation song”.
I’m danish
Hmm.
as a dane i like to watch a movie while eating candy on fridays
We also write personal songs for peoples babtisms, wedddings etc
Thanks from a Dane ❤️🇩🇰
Nice video quality.
Hyggeligt med et spejl🪞🥰
My sister had a tradition when her children (now grandchildren, and grand grandchildren) wiath the "kagemand": He have to be beheaded first, you can't eat him/her alive. When it been beheaded all guests scream.
Yeah, we did this in my kindergarten too.
Lovely!
glad you enjoyed it 😊
Haha i never Actually realized
But y'know this was a *Cozy* video :o)
Hygge is a lifestyle in Denmark 🇩🇰🥰
I didn’t realize that Friday candy was a specifically Danish thing… the same with flagging on one’s birthday 🇩🇰
Friday sweet is a thing connected to cartoon movies sent Friday evening. Here we have the family get together around TV and Sweets
I am Danish and dis video is true😊😊
6:19 here is a example of a song: idag er det (name here) fødselsdag hurra hurra hurra! and i forgot rest of the lyrics
Didn’t know it was candy on fridays, here in Sweden it is saturday. On friday we instead have fredagsmys = ”cosy friday” with snacks and/or tacos.
Indeed cute.
Just a short technical question - what video camera do you use?
That's some very on the surface unwritten traditions of the danes. So unwritten that most people don't do it anymore. Just sometimes some people get nostalgic.
In Sweden fredagsslik is Lördagsgodis. And I think originally coined by their healthdepartment?
Ah could be - to encourage moderation I guess 😊
@@RobeTrotting exactly 🙂
In my childhood it was Saturdays too.
Me and my husband do tirsdagslik because we watch the latest episode of WWE RAW that aired during the night in our Danish timezone.
Til mange børnefødselsdage er der også tradition for at skrige når hovedet på kagemanden bliver skåret af 😂
The Dutch use Cozy often also.............
In the eighties, it was on saturdays, that we finally got to get some candy.
You forgot to say that when we cut the throat on the cakeman we scream very loud, another fun fact about Denmark.....
At my work we bring kagemand when it's our birthday... And we are all adults ...
Maby "Fredags slik" is the reason we are the 2nd happiest country, and have the word "Hygge"😂
Photo from Køge?
as a Dane i can tell you that "fredag slik" "friday candy" can be a adult thing to, ask your danish friend's about that ;)
It's my weakness, and not just on Fridays 😂
Cozyness
Vi har også den søde (hyggelige)😊 tradition, at ved bryllupper når brudeparret danser, står gæsterne i en cirkel omkring brudeparret og klapper, mens cirklen hele tiden bliver mindre og brudeparret til sidst må stoppe.
I didn't have fredagsslik when I was a child. Now I eat sweets (mostly chocolate), now and then, almost every day.
The Danish word for the personal songs is "lejlighedssange" (occation + song).
