Sometimes I think the zoo staff just wants to take care of the baby. I don’t believe they give mom enough time to adjust. On the other hand I have seen a lot of primates moms not have that motherly instinct. I believe it has to do with being in captivity.

The discovery of the monkey vests worn by carers while feeding, etc was pretty brilliant. The little monkeys/gorilla babies cling to these and when they go back to the troop, they're good to go... literally. Great leaps forward in exotic animal care in the last few decades. Props to zoos for raising species awareness, too, for these critically endangered animals.

Aww what a beautiful baby! Baby primates are so delicate, it's amazing that any of them survive in the wild. So many primates can die during childbirth just like women. So many complications and things can go wrong. Luckily these chimps have caring zoo and vet staff to help them if they need it.

She may have had an issue giving birth and had to have her uterus basically scraped out to pull out the placenta. So she would need a good long while to recover and chimps aren't exactly always nice to other chimps. Gid bless these well-meaning people who do an amazing job caring for chimps and gorillas, but still...it just seems like they can't wait to get their smarmy little human hands on a mama chimp/gorilla to medically intervene durung and after a birth. They like to have a baby animal in the nursery because babies of any species but especially ape, bring visitors. "It's been an hour and 6 minutes...let's go in for that placenta!!"
"Tough decision" my butt..most zoos are over the moon to have a baby chimp to handraise and while most of the time, staff do make a sound decision by removing the infant, in this case they should have given the mother more time to expel the afterbirth. The mother had trouble coming out of anesthesia...there are a few reasons why I would have taken the chance that the placenta would drop by itself.Knoxville Zoo gets a thumbs down on this one.
