Actually the movie is not set in Berlin but in the fictional city of Falkenheim probably located near the Elbe river since that's were American and Soviet forces met. The American soldiers are a dead giveaway since they were not present at the battle of Berlin. This makes it even sadder since this means that the climax of the movie takes place during the last pointless days after Hitlers death when German high command was basically just figuring out who had the authority to officially surrender to the Allies.

There a clip of the two of them at an award show or a movie premiere and they ran and hugged each other. It was really sweet. Kindred friends they are.

I'll never forget watching this movie with my family and the moment they showed Yorki survived the whole allies' attack, my entire family (myself included) just collectively cheered "YORKIEEE"
While he is there for comedic effect and general adorableness, he’s there truly to demonstrate how hate is taught. He is beautifully innocent, as demonstrated in each of his scenes, but eagerly joins the army to fight.
What we forget in this film is apart from the main concept, this film was also about two friends who happen to be in a position of war and innocently trying to hard to understand why there's a war and what's use of the war with no survivors-only a kid can imagine like that. The friendship between these two cuties were so adorable.
Love that Jojo has this whole traumatic story arch to learn empathy and stand up for what’s good, and the whole time Yorki is in the background like “oh yeah this whole Nazi thing is bullshit anyways, whatever” like damn Yorki seen some shit too
I don't think he thought it was bullshit necessarily. He seemed to acknowledge being a nazi. Which in his mind was the same as being a German. We didn't get enough incite on his thoughts.
In a way I agree, To me he just wanted a friend and saw that alot of what was being said was insane, but he saw being a 'nazi' as being part of a group with his best friend Jo Jo and akin to belief in your country and not getting in trouble. So in a way I agree, I don't know if he saw it all as bullshit but I think he at least saw saw some of the things he as a kid was being told as untrue or silly. Like 'I forgot about the Brussel sprouts' and 'they might look like us' or 'paper-like' material (sorry if I miss quoted any lines, but I hope you still get the point), but still he goes allong with it. I think he sees the absurdity earlier than JoJo does , but less intensely than Jo Jo , I guess because he isn't fanatical and doesn't meet a jew in that way . We don't see his inner thoughts, but that's how it came across to me.
They were so cute. Real genuine friends, that were always happy to see each other. No matter what they were doing, or what allegiance they had, they always made time for each other.

I just loved Yorkies innocence despite all the horror especially when he's excited over JoJo having a "girlfriend" . Both of them are so sweet. That refreshing childlike innocence really made these scenes.
