  • Emily Rooney interviews former FBI agent John Connolly, who was mobster Whitey Bulger’s handler. While a confidential informant for the FBI, Bulger and his associates committed several murders.
    Connolly was convicted on racketeering charges after a trial showed that he fed information to Bulger that allowed him to continue to evade justice. The 1998 Greater Boston interview touches on Connolly’s association with the Irish-American mob and his continuous proclamation of innocence.

      Brian B agreed. Actually I thought as Whitey he reminded me too much of the Boston George role. Depp seems to be a two trick pony now. He has one dramatic role he can play, and the Keith Richard's drunken pirate. That's all that's left in his bag of tricks. I did like a lot of his other roles throughout the years though.

    I started off not liking this guy but by the end of the interview I found myself believing about 90% of what he said. I think he was partly scapegoated. He did what he had to do in order to complete the mission. It reminds me a bit of Col Jessup's situation in "A Few Good Men" (1992) where he is being questioned if he ordered the code red.
    "...and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way..."
    In other words Connolly had to side with the lesser of two evils for the greater good and he got f*cked for it. He's no saint, by the way, but they really stuck it to him when there were people guilty of far worst sh*t in the grand scheme of things who got immunity. My two cents.

      That body language analysis shit is pseudo science. You would have to know what his baseline behavior is to determine if he is acting weird and even then it doesn’t mean he is lying. I don’t think people like to admit that people can lie and we really don’t have a foolproof way of determining if they are lying without investigating.

There are interviews with him on UA-cam actually (Emily Rooney, the WGBH reporter here, daughter of the late Mickey Rooney, Interviews Dick Lehr in a companion piece to the Connolley interview - all available on UA-cam at the time of this writing). The film Black Mass is based on the book by Dick Lehr.

    Whitey was Boston's top gangster. The Italian American mob in Boston was a pale shadow of the Irish mob. The Mafia's power is greatly exaggerated. Partly as a result of the Godfather films the Italians have been elevated to the masters of the underworld. This notion is ridiculous. America is too vast and diverse for one ethnic group to control its' underworld.
    Connolly was by all accounts an inept agent. His prior relationship with Bulger elevated him to a position he was unequal to. He comes across well in this interview. Alas subsequent investigations and convictions prove he was lying through his teeth. On a human level I pity him. But I grieve for Bulger's many victims.

    • @mikealessi7006
      @mikealessi7006 2 роки тому

      At the time the Italian mafia was falling when bulger took the city.... but your way off to say the mafias power was exaggerated. You need to do your home work of its rise to power through the 30s 40s 50s 60s and 70s in America. They had power up through the highest levels of government until the RICO act when It inally began to fall. All the God father movie did was romanticized the life style. They ran all the unions and rigged all bidding wars to win construction contracts. Controlled waste and garbage removal pornography gambling casinos and that's just a few things. Do your home work

    I was puzzled why Connolly apparently went to such lengths to assist Bulger...which he undoubtedly did...I thought it went way beyond hero worship. Just recently I saw a clip showing the property he’d acquired, which seems far in excess of what he could have bought with his FBI salary. I’m not saying anything about where the money came from maybe it was all legit.
