Interview With 'Whitey' Bulger’s Former FBI Handler John Connolly | Greater Boston
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Emily Rooney interviews former FBI agent John Connolly, who was mobster Whitey Bulger’s handler. While a confidential informant for the FBI, Bulger and his associates committed several murders.
Connolly was convicted on racketeering charges after a trial showed that he fed information to Bulger that allowed him to continue to evade justice. The 1998 Greater Boston interview touches on Connolly’s association with the Irish-American mob and his continuous proclamation of innocence.

6 minutes of her asking questions and him talking for 9 minutes without answering a single one proves he was smartest gangster in the bunch
If he was the smartest gangster he wouldn’t have gotten caught
Isn't he in jail?
Yeah he’s not smart at all.

He was answering to an intellectual inferior. Not the sharpest tool in the shed and her rudeness an ignorant veil.
The actor that portrayed Connolly in the movie looks exactly like the real John Connolly.
But he sucked. He over did the accent completely like a lot of the people in the movie.
Nick Codair Fake Boston accents>real Boston accents.
his name is joel edgerton
+Ian Thompson thats because the guy is australian.and a tough acsent to trandsend.
+Ian Thompson I have met him
On January 15, 2009, Judge Blake sentenced Connolly to 40 years in
prison, saying that Connolly "crossed over to the dark side.
2tonefootage fuck judge Blake Connolly was doing his job
He was actually sentenced to prison in 2002 on Federal racketeering charges, his 40 year murder charge didn't come until long after he had already been in prison.
He's no Sith Lord
On that day my son was born.
Robert Blake got away with murder
This guy is a true gangster not an FBI agent.
What’s the difference?
😂
Johnny Depp did a spectacular job. Possibly the performance of his lifetime.
Torri Coco ...not if you actually know anything about the man in real life..
I would have to disagree, BLOW was by far his best role and that can be debated, Johnny depp is an amazing actor
Brian B agreed. Actually I thought as Whitey he reminded me too much of the Boston George role. Depp seems to be a two trick pony now. He has one dramatic role he can play, and the Keith Richard's drunken pirate. That's all that's left in his bag of tricks. I did like a lot of his other roles throughout the years though.
Torri Coco for sure I thought he should have been nominated
You obviously havnt seen pirates if the caribean then.
He’s the only one who didn’t rat. Lol
He doesn't want to talk because he has a lot of skeletons inside his closet.
He really is I think he was the realest out of the crew he is the true definition of in to deep
John Connolly speaking of someone else committing unconscionable acts of treachery is just weird.
Oh shut up

Crazy .. he’s the only one who didn’t Rat and he’s a Federal agent 😂
Well now he's serving 40 years in prison and lied through out this entire interview
Hmmm - he can apply for parole in 2021 - and I bet he gets it
FBI are even more criminal now (DEC 2018) than they were then - and they now have DoJ in their pocket too!
@@Eliza-wj3ft so true
@@Eliza-wj3ft Actually his next parole hearing is in 2023 but like you said, he will get it. Ironically, based on Florida sentencing guidelines he is suppose to serve 1/3 of his 40 years before becoming eligible for parole. He started his sentence in 2011 so technically should not get a hearing until 2024 yet he got one in 2017 (after serving 6 years). It was denied and supposedly the next date is 2023.
He told the truth FBI screwed him
He got that for telling the truth and humiliating the FBI
"oh come on don't say that, you're breaking my fucking haat"
Why are the chairs so close together
Most gangster outta all of them was an FBI agent😂 40 years for stayin loyal smh
What the difference?😅😂
This guy Connolly was loyal to the bitter end. I think he was very bold and brave to put his career on the line for his childhood friend. Tough spot to be in and in the end he was left out in the cold.
spot on joe big money always corrupts i think i would have been tempted too
So you're OK with him LYING under oath, to Protect The People ???
FBI stinks - even worse now
Oh good god, this lying sack of crap betrayed his duty, betrayed his country, betrayed us all.. 40yrs isn't enough... Hang this this mother-fer....
thats abit extreme dont you think hang him what about his boss R mueller ?
he was a dumb ass like kevin 2 weeks
This guy is actually the reason so many people died. He let those gangsters act free all over the years, corrupt!! should've got death sentence.. this happens in Brazil and thats why my country is the worst country to live nowadays. scumbag
So right!!!
Exactly
He should have been given the death penalty
The irony that John connolly was the only stand up guy
The only one who wouldn’t testify kinda odd he was a agent that wouldn’t break the street code and bulger was a gangster who had no problem telling 😂
It can't be fun being an FBI agent in prison.
He was released in February this year whilst terminally I'll aged 81
He would most likely get PCd.
I would say the federal government has certain prisons for such
And four innocent people languished in jail, two of whom died in jail, just to protect the FBI's reputation.
Who?
@@ericg1100 Joseph Salvati was one of them and he got out eventually. He became a cause celebre in the North End. The others were Peter Limone, Henry Tameleo, and Louis Greco. Actually, they were framed to protect informant Vincent Flemmi. They were convicted in 1968.

"I had an unblemished record in the FBI"......sure you did, Canolli....until the truth came out
El Leeway This is the reason why I found the tales of Whittey Bulger, is a strange but fascinating tale.
Indeed.....you can't have LAW without ORDER, and Canolli wasn't the first corrupt fed in the Boston office....Paul H Rico and his partner, (last name Condon, I believe) showed John the ropes and this was how they worked Boston's FBI office for decades
+El Leeway Agreed. Rico was actually supposed to go to trial at the same time as Connolly and Flemmi. The bastard died from a heart attack a few days before he was supposed to be in court. Rico got off easy, it would seem.
I'll tell you this guy is smart and has excellent self-control.His composure hasn't rattled 1 bit. This dude's a shrewd man
You can tell he’s nervous. When he speaks his mouth seems dry and that’s a sign of being nervous
I don’t think he is a guy like him prolly thought he was in the clear
The justice system in the USA is FUBAR.....Morris "borrows" money and then tries to have them killed and he gets immunity for serving Connolly on a plate for things even he knew so he was equally guilty for them....Tragic.
One testified one didn’t
Whitey met a gruesome end . Even at 89 that was brutal what they did to him .
first I read Brutal by Kevin Weeks, excellent book by the way
Bulger didn't flip on no one. Anybody see the paperwork. Whity was paying them for information.
White absolutely informed on people who were his competitors, he helped set up the Boston mafia when they got taken down
@@yodaguy6956 not too mention he framed people for murders, which a protégé of one of the guys whitey framed is the guy who ended up killing him
This former federal agent is the only one who didn’t testify against JB at his trial. A stand up guy in my book.
Not when you got a badge.
Standing up for psychopathic murderers is not at all a credibly good thing. I can't stand that people have this obsession with thinking loyalty to a horrible person is a good thing. White tortured and killed innocent people , protecting him continued that. I've personally met two people whose family members were killed by White, try explaining your concept of loyalty to them to justify how connoly isnt a dirtbag
SoFo King- Connolly was a thug serving time for racketeering and murder so no jury would have given him the time of day let alone believe anything he had to say. That's why he didn't testify. Not because he wanted to protect your boy.
They didnt need him to testify...
Yea.....very "stand up" 🤨
When you're talking about a hardened criminal in hiding, and the FBI, you're going to be nervous with a dry mouth - knowing it's broadcasting on national television.
But I think Connolly wasn’t a punk I mean he ran with them I don’t really think he’s nervous more trying to not incriminate himself
Former Mayor Kevin White sounded an early alarm...about Whitey *and* Billy...in an interview he gave some time during the 70s/80s. At one point he said something like "if you knew that Whitey was Billy's brother you'd be nothing but nice to Billy". I can't remember the exact quote but it was something along those lines.
The fact that he referred to himself and the FBI as Whitey and Stevies "friends in law enforcement" is telling. 👀
Well he was there handlers who knows how long they worked for him and how many people they helped him in prison pay grades ect
Highly Informative and interesting.
Connolly let's us know there are some crooked cops at all levels. He sure is.
How gullible did she feel after this?
The level of corruption that existed at the time required dirty tactics to eliminate it.
At the time? It never stopped
Yeah...just shows how far back it goes...like from the beginning of time?
The corruption is even worse 20 years later
FBIs scape goat :-(
Yep!
I started off not liking this guy but by the end of the interview I found myself believing about 90% of what he said. I think he was partly scapegoated. He did what he had to do in order to complete the mission. It reminds me a bit of Col Jessup's situation in "A Few Good Men" (1992) where he is being questioned if he ordered the code red.
"...and my existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don't want the truth because deep down in places you don't talk about at parties, you want me on that wall, you need me on that wall. We use words like honor, code, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent defending something. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain myself to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that I provide, and then questions the manner in which I provide it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way..."
In other words Connolly had to side with the lesser of two evils for the greater good and he got f*cked for it. He's no saint, by the way, but they really stuck it to him when there were people guilty of far worst sh*t in the grand scheme of things who got immunity. My two cents.
lol
Maybe, however, there have been some theories on how he really did enjoy the mobster lifestyle and its perks
Yes, and the feds did Connolly for another reason as well - to limit their liability in the inevitable civil lawsuits from the families who lost their loved ones to murder. The feds could counter the unprecedented crime spree that was caused by them looking the other way by saying: "Well, at least we took out Connolly..."
imo he's as crooked as the day is long and he is lying his butt off here in this interview.
Who just happened to be his childhood friend lol
Johnny, Johnny, Johnny, if I hear you say unconscionable one more time I'll croak.

Isn't licking your lips supposed to be a sign of lying? Well, he licks his lips a lot.
+danielscissorhands and his constant movie of his head, its a sign submission and anxiety. nodding left to right is a sign of lying. when you are telling the truth you nod your head up and down .
I thought the same thing, I always say that you must be lying if you lick your lips often when being put in the hotseat.
That body language analysis shit is pseudo science. You would have to know what his baseline behavior is to determine if he is acting weird and even then it doesn’t mean he is lying. I don’t think people like to admit that people can lie and we really don’t have a foolproof way of determining if they are lying without investigating.
Billy and Whitey fed off of each other. They flourished because of the power they held in the criminal and political world.
Say whatever you want...John was a stand up guy

Whitey was Boston's top gangster. The Italian American mob in Boston was a pale shadow of the Irish mob. The Mafia's power is greatly exaggerated. Partly as a result of the Godfather films the Italians have been elevated to the masters of the underworld. This notion is ridiculous. America is too vast and diverse for one ethnic group to control its' underworld.
Connolly was by all accounts an inept agent. His prior relationship with Bulger elevated him to a position he was unequal to. He comes across well in this interview. Alas subsequent investigations and convictions prove he was lying through his teeth. On a human level I pity him. But I grieve for Bulger's many victims.
At the time the Italian mafia was falling when bulger took the city.... but your way off to say the mafias power was exaggerated. You need to do your home work of its rise to power through the 30s 40s 50s 60s and 70s in America. They had power up through the highest levels of government until the RICO act when It inally began to fall. All the God father movie did was romanticized the life style. They ran all the unions and rigged all bidding wars to win construction contracts. Controlled waste and garbage removal pornography gambling casinos and that's just a few things. Do your home work
I was puzzled why Connolly apparently went to such lengths to assist Bulger...which he undoubtedly did...I thought it went way beyond hero worship. Just recently I saw a clip showing the property he’d acquired, which seems far in excess of what he could have bought with his FBI salary. I’m not saying anything about where the money came from maybe it was all legit.
If you know anything about the Bulger family..I find it very difficult to believe that whiteys brother wasn't involved..and helped Connelly in one way or another..
@@victorseger6044 100%.... both crooks who are two sides of the same coin. Billy was smart enough to keep a distance and only correspond with Jimmy at "family gatherings".

In my eyes bulger won he lived free for years with money. He played the fbi and the Italian mob. He had a bad end to the story but at that age he was on his way out anyway.
He got brutally beaten in prison and died. They literally ripped his eye balls out and cut his tongue off. But if not for that you’re right
He was a very old man his body probably shut down very quickly
his life ended exactly the way it was supposed to.. painful and bloody.. 95 or not it kinda hurts a little when you're tongue is being cut out of your mouth.. ripping out his eyeballs weather he was still alive or not was a bonus...at the end of the day Bulger was a piece of s.....h.....i.....t..
