  • In this Illustrator reacts to good and bad comic book art episode we got David Yardin, Moebius (Jean Giraud), Mike Deodato Jr., Bill Sienkiewicz, Bryan Lee O'Malley and Gabriel Rodriguez. Some art specifically is coming from The Injustice comic series (where that thumbnail Batman is from), Dark Avengers, Seconds (O'Malley's book after Scott Pilgrim), Locke and Key (written by Joe Hill, Stephen King's son) and more!
    In this episode, as with the Good and Bad Manga art episode, we look at some 'bad' art that was made under super tight time constraints and well as some comic book panel layout. We look at some good with Bill Sienkiewicz's clever layouts for Moon Knight and Bryan Lee O'Malley's world building pages, then some less flattering with Mike Deodato Jr's Dark Avengers art (which is generally really good, but there are some odd pages). And of course in talking about Moebius, I had to talk about his use of color theory as very few people use reserved color palettes as effectively as he does.
    The hope as always is that these videos are entertaining while respecting the artists, as well as informative in helping any aspiring comic book illustrator to learn how professional artists are utilising different art techniques! Also as mentioned in previous episodes, this show was very much inspired by Corridor crew's 'VFX Artists React to Bad and Great CGI' videos and LegalEagle's Always sunny episodes.
    To Submit to a PopCross Community Redraw (Which has a different theme each month usually announced at the end of the previous month's Community Redraw episode) You can either send art to the Characters-for-Pop channel in the Discord linked below

    • @GrizonII
      @GrizonII 4 роки тому +2

      xolotltolox If you’re referring to the digital color versions, they are official but they aren’t done by Araki. There have been various instances throughout all of JJBA where he does color pages though (which unfortunately aren’t included in most volume releases of the series, although the recent hardcovers have them and IIRC most of them are included in the digital color releases for Parts 7 and 8 [although weirdly the earlier parts mostly didn’t include them and instead recolored the scene to match the main palette they chose]) and each time he does that he tends to choose different palettes for the characters (compare for instance the first few pages of SBR Chapter 28 and 95, both of which were colored by Araki, the characters have completely different palettes in each). I don’t mean that each panel necessarily has its own palette or something like that, rather that each page or sequence of pages generally has a separately decided palette, in case that was unclear.
      I should note actually that Araki has done a few works in full color, specifically “Rohan at the Louvre” and his collaborations with Gucci.

    I am glad that you covered Moebius. My older friend was a huge fan of his work in Heavy Metal magazine. At the time (mid 80s) I didn't really appreciate it. Since then, I have come to REALLY appreciate his work and have seen how he has influenced other artists with his style. I think you did a really good job of pointing out how some of his techniques are subtle, yet have a subconscious impact when looking at the panels. He did this in multiple ways. One of the first comic related posters that I bought to hang on my wall as a teen was Moebius's Iron Man. I never even read Iron Man and was a DC fan but I just really liked the illustrative style and use of the limited color pallet that also influenced me as an art student.

    Would love to see you do some James Stokoe art. I think he's one of the most underrated guys out there. Shades of Moebius and classic cartoons, insane detail. His panel layouts have always been super awesome. I still go back and read Orc Stain occasionally.

    @PopCross Studios, great to see some love for Moebius here. JG is the possibly the biggest unnamed influence in art style for so many things and The Incal, I mean you cannot find anything to contrast it with in the mainstream without getting into Jodorowsky.

    If you like that first image you showed from "Seconds" you should take a look at Spanish artist Francisco Ibañez series "13, Rue del Percebe". Basically, the whole comic series is the concept of that image. Every page shows a building with the front wall missing and you can see what happens inside the different apartments, with one gag happening in each single apartment. The idea is brilliant and it's a lot of fun.

    Moon Knight was pre-New Mutants. He began far more a standard/solid artist, then about halfway thru the run he just exploded. The latter part of the run is just astounding.

    I just got a Locke & Key comic and felt exactly like you about character design in there. But I also feel proud of Rodriguez being Chilean myself too. He's way better at buildings, perspective, etc, I guess because was an architect before he jumped into illustration and comics.

    Chris! Would you consider doing animal combinations? For example I’ve done an art piece of a monster that had the torso, head and arms of a gorilla, and bottom half of a snake. People had called it a “gorillaconda”! Haha. I’d LOVE to see what your rendition would look like!

    I think a comic that surprised me with its layout was Arkham Asylum A Serious House On Serious Earth. The page of joker basically opening the door to the asylum shouldn't work but because of the circumstances and story presented in the comic it does even though when you look at it for the first time you may think its just weird or bad. You should check it out in one of your videos both for the art and the layout of the panels.

    A great artist to look at for a manga episode would be Norihiro Yagi author of Angel Densetsu and Claymore. Some really amazing art in both series.
    The monsters in Claymore, especially the awakened ones and Abyssal Ones, were amazing. And while Angel Densetsu's art was rougher it really stands out with how the MC was drawn.

    11:43 That's Mimic or Cal if you want to call him by his regular name. If I'm not mistaken he can use up to five different mutants powers at once. His usual power set is that of the OG X-Men given that he's spent the most time with them and knows their powers the best.
