Lyrics:
I was there when Shooter Jennings
Rewound the sound like a cassette
I watched Jamey Johnson
Cut “You Can't Cash My Checks”
Back then Rowdy Jason Cope
Was running shine sunset to vine
Pickin’ songs with Leroy Powell
Makin redneckisms rhyme
I guess now everyone knows Cousin Dave
But he been around awhile
Proving simple truths and music
They just don't go out of style
It's hard to tell when you’re in it
Sometimes the moment’s too profound
But if I had to bet my money
That's when country came back to town
Right after that I moved to Nashville
And most the Broadways stars
Wanted to be Cody Canada, Ryan Bingham or Hayes Carll
They seemed too cautious to commit
So they surrendered to the game
But nobody sang like Brandi Carlile
Or wrote like Nikki Lane
But you couldn't deny that it was lost
Or how it would be found
But when Sturgill climbed High Top Mountain
Country came back to town
Beyond the pickups and the backroads
You could almost hear it play
Though it was softer than a whisper through the pines
Some say it never left some say that it got saved
Some say like everything it changes over time
Well all I know for certain is I’m glad i was around
When country came back to town
Oh when country came back to town
As the divide grew even greater between commerce and art
Folks like Miranda Lambert kept the beat inside its heart
Right along with Chris and Morgane and Kacey Musgraves too
What took the world so long to catch on for us was nothing new
But by the time the torch was passed and the hatchet was laid down
Music Row had nearly burned to ash
When country came back to town
Beyond the pickups and the backroads
You could almost hear it play
Though it was softer than a whisper through the pines
Some say it never left, some say that it got saved
Some say like everything it changes over time
Well all I know for certain is I’m glad I was around
When country came back to town
When country came back to town
Now here we are 18 years later with a list a mile long
Of names like Childers, Jinks, Price, and Whitey, Hood, Shook, Cook, Cauthen and Combs
Lord knows it's hard to name them all
But hell right off the top of my head, Isbell, Eady, Patton, Moonpies, Turnpike, Colter, and Crockett
And won't be stoppin, no name droppin’ til history books echo the sound
Of all the folks who saddled up and
Drove country back to town
Oh back to town
Brent, this is cool af... When George asked "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes", man all these folks did... You are too humble to say it, but that sound you have, it's not like anyone else. When I heard "Shine On Rainy Day" for the first time, you got put on a that same pedestal for me.
Oh my God!! Thank you for your love and your support.
How long have you been a fan of my work?
I gotta admit, I shed a tear when I saw the lyrics to this song. What a beautiful level of gratitude expressed
Yeah me too he said jamie Johnson
shel silverstein vibes in the best way!
Love me some Shel ❤
Right !? I'm wondering who came first now 😉
Sturgill climbing High To Mountain is what brought me to country. Never really listened to country before that. Now I have an entire playlist, including Brent here.
Same here!
Grew up on old country. Charlie Daniel's is the 1st music I remember listening to with my grandpa. Sturgill is the 1st I discovered that sent me down a rabbit hole and made me turn of the the FM radio
Mike and the moonpies even got a mention. ❤️
Put the “O” back in country. The real ones will know
Holy smokes that living room is incredible. Also, I would absolutely buy a copy of this book to read to kids while listening to the song.
As would I!
It's a good size for a vinyl record, I could see them doing a limited printing with this as the sleeve, with the pages too
Modern classic. His evolution is so enjoyable to listen to and follow. Well done sir. Well done.
Brent Cobb is a most excellent example of good country downhome cooking tunes
Keep singing the truth brother! Can't wait to see you soon. I really appreciate you making great honest music.
Every musician mentioned truly brought country back to town....they are the Saviors ....
I absolutely love this tune. I'm glad that the re-emergence of roots country has become mainstream enough to reminisce about it.
This is Awesome this is my cousin proud of him my blood God Bless ❤ doing it Brent
Beautiful song and incredible way to tell the story. You took decades of history and got it all into one beautiful song. Brought a tear to my eye. Thank you for sharing it. And yes, I want a book.
This song is an instant classic! Feels like time travel and I’m here for it!
Love that you mentioned Jason Cope from The Steel Woods. He is missed. A well written song and great tune.
Turnpike as well
Thank you for your love and your support.
How long have you been a fan of my work?
Please tell me they are selling this book
Where can I get that book?
I can't help but be reminded of "Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes" by George Jones. I'm not saying the artists mentioned in this song or any artists for that matter could fill those legendary shoes or if they could ever be filled but it's so awesome that over the past 10+ years so many new artists have emerged and more or less shunned the Nashville pop country trappings and wrote and released music that is honest, heartfelt, soulful and not so whitewashed like the cookie cutter crap on the radio!!! Can't wait to see Brent live again at The Burl in November!!!!!
At this point, theres is no doubt in my mind that the artists mentioned in this video can and are filling those shoes
Hell i 'd give a hundred dollars for one of them books son
...3 chords & the truth. Amen
Great tune, brother Brent! God bless you.
Love the song! Someday Ian Noe will get his recognition
First time hearing this song today. So lovely to hear Rowdy mentioned. He was a special soul.
This oughtta be one of the coolest songs right now ab our generation of country music
I need this book.
I guess we finally know the answer to George Jones question..."whose gonna fill their shoes".
Another epic Brent Cobb tune. Thank you for the awesome music, huge fan!
First time hearing this tune today . Such a classic love the name dropping and cool track . I was just thinking about how country music was revived as of lately , and it’s thanks to our generation of cool artists . Such a blessed time . Don’t know it’s happening till you can look back and see how far we have come ! Amazing . ❤🎉😊
Absolutely incredible song and a great story is told. Perfect music video. 10/10
Thanks Brent Cobb!
-your fan, Kyle Armstrong
I've loved your music since I fell in love with country on my first trip to Nashville in 2018. All of these artists mentioned in this tune have had a huge impact on me and my family. Brent, your music feels like home. Can't wait to see you in Charlottesville in November!
This east Texas girl still cruises to country on the back roads to my favorite surf spots all along the west coast! You're the real deal Brent and rest assured country will always play in my neck of the woods as long as great artists like yourself keep singing ✌
Crazy how well that sofa from 1972 is holding up in 2055. Who's going to get us some lyrics in the comments?

This song gives me a strange sense of nostalgia just by how it sounds. Definitely puts a tear in your eye if you’ve grown up really loving country music.. I wish Luke Bell would’ve been mentioned.
Instumentation-wise, this song has a 1980s Alabama vibe to it. Love it!
