    Fantastic guide! Couple extra tips for min-maxing your embark:
    - cave spider silk thread/cloth is cheaper than the pig tail stuff you get by default, so you can swap it out for easy points
    - the raw ingredients for most items are cheaper than the item, so get rid of the buckets, crutches etc. and bring more wood. The one exception are the starting tools and weapons so you can leap into action but that weaponsmith you specced can make higher quality items for your future armies

    • @VonGalactic

    Also in hindsight, maybe Adil made an animal trap because he wants to do something about the snapping turtle problem? Or maybe it's because he was trapped like an animal under the constructed bridge? Lots to ponder~

    I absolutely loved the swift transition to explaining how to setup military when an enemy suddenly started attacking. The humor and conciseness of the video is just perfect. It's a great change of pace from a lot of other very meticulously detailed and slow paced tutorials where everything is scripted. It makes this video much more entertaining!

    Bought the game a week ago, this video was a godsend to set up my fortress good and proper. Granted there's video tutorials that are basically an 8-week correspondence course that offer more in-depth information, but this is sufficient enough to get the ball rolling the right way without taking too much time to watch.

    • @mx-hx
      @mx-hx 4 місяці тому

      @@VonGalactic While the speed is fine (one has pause after all), what is a bit difficult when trying to follow along as a total beginner, is that your voiceover is often several seconds behind what you are showing in the screen. So that if I pause the video, what I'm seeing often doesn't relate to what I've just heard at all.
      Jumping back a bit helps often, and thankfully your voice is very pleasing so the repetition isn't terrible :)
      It's cool and enthusiastic quick-guide, still just some input in case you'll consider doing more guides in the future to clean-up the sync in editing a bit more.

    Little tip that can help a lot: if you don’t have a well yet, set up a water source so bloodstains don’t cause miasma in your fort, it’s what killed my first fort. Also, I have a question, what do wheelbarrows do and how do I use them? I made them and my dwarves don’t use them for anything.

    • @DonCarmolo
      @DonCarmolo День тому

      Wheelbarrows allow dwarves to move heavy objects faster, like stone boulders or stone furniture. In order for dwarves to use them, they need to be allowed for use in the stockpiles involved. Select a stockpile and in the settings of it you will finde an option for how many wheelbarrows can be assigned to it.

  • @SoNorthitzSouth
    @SoNorthitzSouth 2 місяці тому +1

    Good video. Honestly, though I'm still learning I have an obsession with making a "floor" for every job specialization. There's a craftsdwarf floor, a smelting/smithing floor, often the sleeping quarters and tavern are either on the same floor or just above and below eachother. Problem is this delays my essentials because my craftsdwarfs are waiting a month for all of it to be excavated by just 2 guys before they even get their workshops up and running! I should probably start doing what you suggest right at the start

    • @VonGalactic
      @VonGalactic  2 місяці тому +1

      I LOVE THAT IDEA! definately consider a floor to have temp things first, you can always trash them later, I know how you feel the game can be slow af till you have a higher population to dig everything out. My problem is I end up dolling up temporary floors and get too attached to them xD

    • @mirror1766
      @mirror1766 2 місяці тому

      Whether on the same or different floors it still takes time. Consider starting with smaller areas even if scattered across floors. You can use the blueprint mode to delay parts of your building or just put those parts as a lower dig priority so it happens when higher priorities are finished.
      A temporary/scrappable floor layout is a fine approach too. Just like your first stockpile, you can decide if it is a general catch all that you slowly remove things from as you get specialized areas/uses or if you just replace it.
      Its even faster if some things are done on the surface (of environment isn't too risky or you accept such a challenge).
      You can also start the temporary area as a separate baby fort and go bigger from a separate area later. Though its not something I normally see done, you could even keep it designed for a fallback in case of a catastrophe that is barely survived or also have it become a full+redundant fort so you can use it as a fallback in case of a threat getting past critical checkpoints or other severe issues arise. I think redundancy still has some limitations like if you don't have enough dwarves to drive some parts of it (yet), are missing key pieces (extra anvil), and being inexperienced I don't know how easily you can fully force dwarves from one set of zones to the next for all of their tasks.

    Good general 'what to do' tutorial even if it misses some of the basics of user interface as could be beneficial to a new player or someone upgrading from legacy dwarf fortress to this interface. Overall seemed well paced for a condensed guide and mostly stayed on topic. Thank you for making this tutorial
    For some constructive feedback...
    The captions burned into the video can be a bit distracting both because of its bouncing appearance and short few word layout; since a game tutorial should probably have more focus be on the game rather than added content of chat/narration/etc. that happens outside of the game I'd say it is best not to distract the viewer off of the game in front of them. Similarly, thanks for not adding an avatar or other stream overlays over the game during educational content; it was in the intro but the game education wasn't yet taking place. I didn't compare to youtube's autogenerated translations but if my past experience with it is anything then yours are far superior as youtube's autogenerated captions are usually full of amusing and confusing errors. You also appear to generally have things on screen long enough to be read by those needing captions but at 1 row that changes every few words it leaves little time to look away without very fast reading speeds. Size is legible even with my bad eyes, but it'll be hard to fit text on screen at more than a few words without losing a lot of the screen at that size so its a tradeoff.
    Placing the captions permanently into the video often causes a quality reduction for the rest of the video image due to how sharp changing edges work in most video codecs; the amount of impact varies depending on the content that was covered but is usually worse unless it covered very fast changing content. You can work around that by making a fuzzy/blended/gradient edge instead of sharp edge on the content.
    For those who don't need it, they can't turn off the distraction if it is burned into the video. If they speak a different language then the distracting captions aren't helping them. If they turn on captions from future autotranslations or other sources while viewed in any media player, your larger captions that are easy to read may look very odd+distracting coming through and around other overlayed captions. For these reasons, I usually prefer captions be provided as a separate caption stream that can be properly toggled on/off. Separate captions also make content more easily searchable when available separately as its normally stored as some form of text file; good for finding things when their location in 1+ videos is forgotten without having to play through the media. You also spoke clearly so I didn't feel a need to make up for audio with the captions for what I remember.

In hindsight, I’m betting they wanted me to swap out for more sturdier tools, or hell, even actual metal as opposed to copper.

    "Comprehensive" + "Dwarf Fortress" = 30 minutes?
    This is going to be hilarious.

    • @VonGalactic
      @VonGalactic  7 місяців тому +2

      I meaaaan i'm trying to invite people into the game without an intimidating info dump 3 hour video showing every single thing at your disposal, after this vid you'll at least be set up with understanding of how to tackle future dilemmas rather than having no core understanding of how to play the game.
      Things like heavy aquifers or haunted biomes don't need me to visually show it due to them being self explanatory as a more aggressive version of what is shown here, with my guide you can pretty reliably continue playing for the next 100 hours or till the fort explodes.

    The random generation systems and various simulations that Dwarf Fortress runs get all the credit for being the big signature features of the game's engine but honestly the work order system is phenomenal, incredibly in depth and as much as it might seem intimidating, these days it's pretty easy to use. The game would be completely unmanageable after a few hours of playtime per fort without it, and it allows you to be in depth and organized so that everything runs like a complex clock or relaxed and spontaneous, just putting in work orders as the need for them arises, and both methods are at the very least viable.

    • @VonGalactic
      @VonGalactic  5 місяців тому
