@@eddiehauser6661 One Size Fits All featured George Duke, Napolean Murphy Brock, Ruth Underwood, Tom Fowler and Chester Thompson - with a few other people making "guest appearences" on various songs.
Yeah mine too, so many musical treats, a solid album front to back. I can't think of a single other composer/arranger of the rock era that could create anything so complex and beautiful musically.
If I want to play any one song for someone who has never heard Zappa it is Inca Roads. It has everything that makes Zappa Zappa and shows how no one else wrote and played like that group of players.
With 64 Studio albums to choose from Zappa's work, and the eclectic tastes of myself and other Zappa fans being pretty extreme, I didn't expect to agree so much with the list. I'd maybe move Apostrophe to position 2, and Sheik Yerbouti to position 10, while giving first rank to Overnite Sensation- but I'd include all the same albums... Some great songs in that bunch... "Flakes", " Broken Hearts are for...", "Pajama People", " Zomby Woof", "Camarillo Brillo", " The Torture Never Stops", "Stinkfoot"... Jeez, a lot of my favorite songs on those albums. You have great taste.
1975, I was in the A.F. visiting the commissary when I saw "One size fits all" on the $1.99 rack, I took a chance and that 1 album changed my musical life for ever. Burnt Weenie is 1 of the 5 albums I need to own the complete discography of Frank Zappa, a collection I'm very proud of.

When this video started, I instantaneously recognized my favorite section of one of my all-time favorite pieces of music (especially to play on drums), the guitar solo from Inca Roads, on One Size Fits All, the first FZ album I ever bought (and I'm fortunate to have most of the ones mentioned here--all on vinyl and some on CD). That's always going to be my favorite (album and track), but his tragically short life was (fortunately for us) one of the most prolific--so much amazing music to choose from. I was lucky to see him live but Dweezil's Zappa Plays Zappa is the next best thing.
Wilhout Live Albums I agree with you very often. Okay - sometimes different places. With Live Albums Bongo Fury and Roxy & Elsewhere. My favourite is One Size Fits All. But Hot Rats is with the famous Captain Beefheart. So I understand why Hot Rats... I missed only Chunga's Revenge.
Excellent top 10. I really like Waka Jawaka and We're Only In It For The Money as well. My favourite Zappa guitar solo is on the Sleep Dirt album, The Ocean ...
I think Hot Rats, Bongo Fury, and We're Only In It For the Money have to be my main three picks. I don't know which order I'd put them in, but I enjoy them so much. Honorable shoutouts to Chunga's Revenge, as it's just vastly underrated, The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life, as the entire thing is just so incredible to hear with all the musicians Zappa had at the time, and Jazz From Hell, for showing us what wicked things laid within his mind.
I was a teenager in the late 60’s and my first album was Mothermania. So to catch up on Zappa I bought everything from Freak Out to Uncle Meat. So my bias is the 60’s LP’s. Hot Rats was my first disappointment because it was not satirical garage rock. But that’s me.
1- Apostrophe 2- Over-nite sensation 3-Waka Jawaka 4-Hot Rats 5-One Size Fits All 6-Burn't weeny Sandwich 7-Roxy and Elsewhere 8-Studio Tan 9-Zoot Allures 10-Tinseltown Rebellion 11-Grand Wazoo 12-Chunga's revenge 13-Ahead of their time 14-Absolutly Free 15-We're Only In It For The Money sans compter des ovnis comme Joes Garage, Bongo fury, Shut n play guitar x3, filmore 71, freak out, uncle Meat, Sleep dirt, Lather, the man from utopia et encore tant d'autre.
I cannot pick a favorite. Those who enjoyed some of his bands over others, Zappa referred to them as Fetish Fans. I found him to be so unbelievably talented and unique, I give every album equal weight.
Top 2 picks are predictable and not controversial. Grand Wazoo is a great inclusion. Some of the newer stuff could have been dropped for Chunga's Revenge (a gross oversight and some of the most exciting George Duke contributions) and Weasels Ripped My Flesh (how could that be overlooked with a song named Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue.
I had all ten of the albums in this list, plus about 20 more. Too tough for me to rank them as many are different genres, but of this list I would put 'The Grand Wazoo' at #1. I often wonder what style of music Frank Zappa would be doing today had he not been taken from us so soon.
Great choices. I almost totally agree except Zoot Allures is and will always be my first choice because it's the first Zappa album I ever heard. It's the year punk broke and tonthis day I consider Zoot to be as punk as any punk album
Pleased to see YAWYI at number 8 - I bought this on vinyl when it came out as I was discovering Frank’s music and was knocked out by the production. The complex arrangements and song structures are typical Zappa - it’s essentially a pop record with just a hint of Zappa’s trademarks (long solos, ‘jazz-rock’, blistering percussion; odd transitions and atonality, xenochrony and parody). I think You Are What You Is is a successor to Ruben and the Jets - Zappa ‘playing it straight’ - or as close as he can get!
One Size Fits All, Roxy & Elsewhere, The Grand Wazoo, Waka Jawaka, Filmore East, Ship Arriving Too Late, Sleep Dirt, Over-Nite Sensation, Weasels Ripped My Flesh, Just Another Band from L.A. Honorable Mention: You Are What You Is, Zoot Allures, Studio Tan, Hot Rats, Live in NY, Lather, Ruben and the Jets
We're only in it for the money, Absolutely Free, Joe's Garage (for "Outside now"), Fillmore East, Just another Band from LA, Overnite Sensation, Apostrophe, Roxy & Elsewhere, One Size Fits All, Zappa in New York,
Joe's Garage I+II+III has to be in the top 3, thanks to the sheer amount of intense and dense material YET also thanks to the impeccable contribution of Vinnie Colaiuta who plays absolute killer drums. My personal #2 and #3 are Tinseltown Rebellion & You are what you is for deeply truthful critical lyrics (like 'Brown shoes' or "Dumb all over") and the range of songs that always fit my mood. Having said that without a shadow of doubt: 'honorable mentions" include "Shut up 'n' play", "Zappa in NY", Sheik Yerbouti, "Ship arriving" "Apostrophe/Overnite Sensation", "Zoot Allures", YCDTOSA 5 +6

I’m in love with his rock and roll stuff, but you really get to hear his genius with his orchestral work. He was an amazing guitarist and songwriter, but it’s clear that his passion was composing for an orchestra. Everything Is Healing Nicely and 200 Motels are probably my favorites of his as of now.
The thing I don't like about "You are what you is" is how over-compressed" the entire album sounds. That's something that Frank would never do, it just sounds so "Squashed" with over-compression.
