You are what you is….. hugely underrated …. Your top 5 is a great selection I find it impossible to pick depends on the day…. Billy the Mountain at the mo
Hmmm. No mention of "One Size Fits All"? I know this about personal opinion but I can't believe OSFA didn't even make your Top 5. It's my personal Number 1, and has been for 50 years.
When they cover the content out of a passion for the content rather than a passion for covering the content, you can always tell. Look at his face when he's pulling out his #1.
Do you consider "One Size Fits All" a studio album? (I agree with FZ that the line can be a bit blurry.) If so, it not only should have been on this list, but I place it at #1.)
Not my top 5 of FZ albums but they are sure one of my top ten. I believe that Freak Out, Apostrophe(), One Size Fits All, Sheik Yerbouti and Zoot Allures or You Are What You Is would be yours top from 6 to 10.
Enjoyed the list. My first purchase was Studio Tan with Greggery Peccary and Joe's Garage I, II and III. Got them when they came out and they sounded great on my dorm stereo and still enjoy today digitally. I think these albums sound best listening all they way through. Just picking out songs is like taking your favorite binge show and only watching one episode (or something like that). Thanks for a little memory lane fun.
My exposure to Frank Zappa has been so minimal that I can't comment on your list, but I did want to observe that your vocal impressions of Zappa and Paul McCartney are pretty good!
Agree with the list..! Very hard to pick a top 5 for sure there are so many good albums of his. But like you it’s the diversity of music that draws you into being a FZ fan.. my 1st Zappa was Overnight Sensation so it will always be my no 1 because of this.!!
The Grand Wazoo is my favourite Zappa album! It reminds me of mid-1960's to mid-1970's American action films starring Steve McQueen or Clint Eastwood that have that jazzy background music going on.
@@top5records796 Absolutely, films like Bullitt and Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, even the early Dirty Harry films, also early 1970's American cop/detective tv shows too, they all used a certain kind of jazzy music that just fits well with the music from The Grand Wazoo.
I don't get the adoration of Joe's Garage. Acts 2 and 3 have some nice instrumental sections (taken from live shows) but the Central Scrutinizer gets old pretty quickly and a lot of the songs are just boring and childish potty humor. I agree that Waka Jawaka is way, way better. As is The Yellow Shark.
Can't argue with the list, my rankings would simply depend on the day...other close contenders for me would be Weasels Ripped My Flesh and Chunga's Revenge.
All great, but I'd put OneSizeFitsAll in there and bump Woiiftm (which is still top 10). and Uncle Meat should be in there. And burnt weenie..... oh hell, it's impossible.
One Size Fits All was in there just one second before recording the video... It is the forever 6th spot for me. But, just as you say; it's impossible. Sheik Yerbouti, Weesels, Freek Out, Apostrophe, the list goes on and on...
100% Agree, great list. I also own LP's all all you shown. "Grand Wazoo", "Hot Rats" and "Were only in it" are (3) very underrated albums. (From someone that has made 3-Zappa Music videos)
Joe's Garage was how I became a fan of Zappa. I had heard one of the live ones first on recommendation of some online dudes but they were wrong. IMO you should almost never start with something live with Zappa. His concerts are cool, but you'll only meet Zappa the Guitarist on those. You won't meet Zappa the artist.
I'm afraid that says more about the player and the quality in which you kept the vinyl than about vinyl in general. My world changed when I got my needle-pressure right and started cleaning my records!
More than five FZ studio recordings are on a level that makes the task of ranking seem like a foolish pursuit. This kind of exercise often just shows off how poorly informed the reviewer is. A "My 5 Favorite Frank Zappa Albums" tag line would be better, (there is no objective or empirical "Top 5"). This list like several others on UA-cam does FZ and prospective new listeners a disservice. If you are gun to the head having to give the best overview of Zappa's studio discography w/ a list of five albums, this isn't a very good one. Uncle Meat is a double album, so it has more stuff on it than We're Only In It For The Money, and it has way more core compositional material on it than any other early Mothers album. A lot of ideas that show up here surface again on later albums. If you're going to pick a Joe's Garage album at least pick Vol. 2 & 3, (again) it's a double album and it's got more stuff on it, (and lots more amazing guitar workouts). It also tells the listener quite a bit more in a narrative sense than Vol. 1 by itself.
So you have a very long response trying to evaluate the quality of Zappa’s work in which your conclusion is to always put the double albums on top because then you get ‘more’ music? Zappa is indeed somewhere crying but it is not over this video.
@@top5records796 my response was obviously not claiming that quantity always beats quality. Keep up the sarcasm, it might make you feel better w/ out having to learn anything.
Well that is basically what your argument comes down to. Joe’s Garage Part 2 and 3 is absolutely different than part 1 (though very good as well). And Uncle Meat is quite uncompareable as well. I am always open to learn new stuff. But as a teacher you might have a better shot without the derogatory tone.
My late father introduced me to the world of Zappa when I was quite young, don't eat that yellow snow of course. Overnight Sensation is AMAZING! Solo on The Slime sooooo good! My other solo favorite has to be The Muffin Man, just tasty. Frank could shred. Just picked up a used copy of The Shiek for cheap at my local shop. Not too familiar with it but it's Zappa. Great video, dig the passion 👏
Thank you! And I completely agree with you! I think I Am The Slime and Muffin Man are his most shredding solo’s. I just also love the way Captain Beefheart starts to sing on that song!

Great show, but stunned that you didn't include my #1, "One Size Fits All".
Thanks and you are right, One Size Fits All should have been there. I regret not putting it in the video.

Absolutely Agree!!! Inca Roads, Andy!! Amazing!!!
I love the passion this guy shows
Thank you!

The man on the upper left of Overnight Sensations album cover in none other than Ron Jeremy.
Indeed! I never knew he was active in those days.
@@top5records796 Yes and apparently Frank Zappa was obsessed with sex and I think that's why he had a picture of a porn star on this album.

Nope, I would call that a studio album. It's on my number 6 spot voor this list. I love it a lot though!
@@top5records796 So tough with Frank's massive output. Waka Jawaka is another great one. I think OSFA is a perfect LP.

"One Size Fits All" !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The Best overall!!!

Love Overnite Sensation! Frank Zappa is just the gift that keeps on giving.
Grand wazoo is definitely a masterpiece. My personal Zappa favorite.
I just discovered your channel and subscribed 👍..A big Zappa fan❤…glen
I've just recently got some Zappa albums and very surprised to be honest great stuff
It’s a great world to step into!
What is the storage system in which you keep the LPs in the background?
The Grand Wazoo is my favourite Zappa album! It reminds me of mid-1960's to mid-1970's American action films starring Steve McQueen or Clint Eastwood that have that jazzy background music going on.

MY LIST: 1. Roxy 2. Uncle Meat 3. One Size Fits All 4. Burnt Weeny Sandwich 5. Freak Out -- for what it's worth
Awesome list! Got to love Roxy!
Whoops ... I forgot APOSTROPHE. Oh well, it's nearly an impossible to rate Zappa albums by merit LOL.
I absolutely agree on the top 4 (and that's only because I don't know Grand Wazoo that well). You are dead on! 👍
Yes. A very good list. I agree with everything but Joes garage. Uncle Meat and waka jawaka should be runners up. 😁

Uncle Meat has topped my list for 54 years.
That’s an interesting choice! Very extreme album! Why does it top your list?
