When talking about the greatest pro pool player of all time, there’s no doubt that Efren “Bata” Reyes is the one. There are several reasons why he’s considered as such even though there are many other great pro pool players like Earl “the Pearl” Strickland, Ralf “the Kaiser” Souquet, Johnny “the Scorpion” Archer, and even another great Filipino pro pool player, Francisco “Django” Bustamante, who have achievements as many as Reyes. So, why does it have to be Reyes? Well, here are the 5 reasons why Reyes is the greatest pro pool player of all time.
Number 2.
Revolutionizing pool sport. It cannot be denied that Reyes has revolutionized pool sport in many ways. First of all, he became a part of the Filipino invasion in the United States along with his compatriots, Francisco “Django” Bustamante and Jose “Amang” Parica back in 1980s. The Filipino invasion in the United States really encouraged many other Filipino pro pool players to take part in pool tournaments outside Philippines, especially in the United States, for better rewards. Another revolutionary achievement of Reyes in pool sport was his becoming the champion of the 1994 US Open 9-Ball Championship. It was revolutionary because Reyes was the first non-American pro pool player to win the longest-running annual pool tournament, breaking a chain of American domination in the tournament for almost 2 decades since its inaugural tournament in 1976. With that, other non-American pro pool players started to think that it was possible for non-American pro pool players to dominate the event that has become the pride of the United States, inviting more non-American pro pool players to the annual event. Besides the US Open 9-Ball Championship, the alternative of the 1999 WPA World 9-Ball Championship, the 1999 World Professional Pool Tournament, was also won by Reyes, making him the first Filipino pro pool player to win the world champion of pool title. His win in the world tournament surely inspired many other Filipino pro pool players, such as Alex “the Lion” Pagulayan who admitted himself that he idolized Reyes and made Reyes his inspiration in pool sport. Another revolutionary achievement of Reyes in a pool tournament was his win in the inaugural WPA World 8-Ball Championship in 2004, making him the very first champion of the annual event as well as the first Filipino pro pool player to win it. His footsteps in the WPA World 8-Ball Championship were then followed by Ronato “Volcano” Alcano in 2007 and Dennis “Robocop” Orcollo in 2011.

Being inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame. In order to be able to be considered as a pool legend, a pro pool player surely has to be inducted into the Billiard Congress of America Hall of Fame or BCA Hall of Fame. The induction into the BCA Hall of Fame is like a final and highest achievement that a pro pool player can get. The induction is only possible after a pro pool player collects a significant amount of achievements in pool sport. Those achievements can be from winning pool tournaments or from giving contributions to the pool sport itself. So, there are many factors that must be fulfilled in order to be able to be inducted in to the BCA Hall of Fame. In this case, Efren “Bata” Reyes was inducted into the BCA Hall of Fame in 2003, making him the first Asian pro pool player to be inducted into the hall of fame. With that induction, Reyes more than deserves to be called a pool legend.
