I keep a spray bottle filled with water and disinfectant to use instead of flushing. Also, spray the bowl before use so that 'it' doesn't stick to the sides!
i used a spray bottle with water and essential oils, but only pee went in. ALSO if you put a TB of dish soap and a couple TB of borax, it keeps the odor gone and is a lot cheaper than anything you buy in a store.
I have just started living in my Dodge Grand Caravan. I am using a five gallon bucket with a toilet lid. I am so happy I found your videos! My goal is to get a camping toilet.
I've been playing with this idea for about a year, this is the first time I've seen an actual working solution for me for going to the bathroom. I'm one of those people that has to get up a couple of times during the night so having to go outside or do anything that's very inconvenient was just not going to work. Thank you so much for sharing this I've added it to my wish list!
Another great thing to use for keeping your portable toilet clean as well as the smells, is dawn dish liquid and Calgon water softener. It is truly, amazing
I was just discussing porta pottys with my sister-in-law today! So this does help with seeing how it can fit in a small camper and how it can be disguised! Thank you from Australia.
In a former life I had a camping toilet. If I go on the road again- I think I'm going to get a composting toilet- like one that they use on boats or maybe I will make one. I think the medium that I saw for the compost was coconut shells.
Omg perfect I have the exact same set up. My toilet is in a square ottoma. I found it horrible to empty after flushing. So I switched to keeping liquid and solids separate.. And use composting for solid in separate bad and kitty litter for liquid. . If you ever get tired of the dumping.. Lol
I'm starting on my Dodge GC build. I can't believe you people have enough room! I'm 6'1" and was tempted to go with a full size bed but that takes up most of the width of the van. I ended up buying a single mattress. I'll have to manage with that until I trade in on a Dodge Roadmaster next year, which is what I should have bought in the first place. And I'm going with the Home Depot bucket commode for the foreseeable future!
reference Bettie Gambrill comment about the spray bottle .........i liked that idea. Another tip would be to put some sheets of toilet paper in the bowl to facilitate the solids to slide more easily . Best wishes Mike County Durham UK
This is a great option! Everything is so functional in your build, I love it! *Was there a particular channel you watched obsessively when you were researching this lifestyle?* 😀
I really appreciate folks like you sharing about how you make things "work". That being said, what is the practicality or difficulty in actually emptying that tank while traveling? I can't imagine most fast food restaurants look too kindly upon you bringing the waste cartridge into their restroom. Cheers!
I had one of those... be sure the cap is tight!!! ..don't ask... am going to try a small bucket with coconut coir. I DO like the way you disguise it tho. :-D
One of those came w our pop up. Used it once cuz it was very hard to clean all the guck out of the holding tank. Lots of nooks n crannies in it. It’s buckets n bags for us but not crazy about environmental issues w waste disposal.
I stay in my expedition el full time in arizona and I have a 5 gal bucket with double layer trash stretch bags and use natural sand in it,I built a fold up toilet box that the bucket goes under and has a seat attached so I just lift the box lid toilet seat and snap the bucket lid on it.no maintenance at all,one bag lasts me two weeks and I just twist and tie and dispose.also built a foldable porta potty area that the box goes in for privacy so I can use it anywhere.
This is like the one in a camper trailer that I use to have at a campground. Be sure to put tp down first so that your #2 does not stick to the bowl, as that is very hard to wash down ;). Also, add some water to the toilet first so you get a good flush.
I’d put a plastic bag in it each time I used it. Tie it up and you have nothing to emtpy. Just the same kind of process you have when tossing the dogs dooty bag after a walk....into the trash can.
@@MoBangFoYoBucks I agree. I think the bag/bucket method is best using kitty litter. Do your business & throw it away. I’d still have a separate container for #1. I hear when 1 & 2 mix it’s 🤢
Longbranch Alice- I have MS and can not walk and chew gum at the same time😂😂😂😂 so I agree with you about double bagging. I am incapable of detaching, carrying and dumping. I have so far done 3 three months trips using the double bag with perfect success. I use this potty with the bags for maximum stability.
Well for me personally, this is something that I would NEVER purchase because... Most of the time I'm "boondocking" is usually in a rest area or a truck stop. If I just happened to be out in the woods... Well I can dig a hole and cover it up. No maintenance in keeping it clean and no taking up of space that I might need for something else. To each their own I suppose.
So basically you don't use the toilet you just put a bag over it ,do your business tie the bag and throw it away ,right? that way you have a comfortable seat and you don't complicate your life ...And you keep it looking NEW 😉
@@robertotr The campgrounds I stay at are paid areas. There is a lot of BLM land in Arizona, so there are a ton of full time van lifers in that area. And of course it's free to boondock on BLM land. 🥰 I know many people who live in vans full time take advantage of such land.
@@robertotr Any BLM or National Forest(not parks) land is open to free 'dispersed camping' unless it is specifically posted. Usually there is a 14-day stay limit & you have to move on, but always check(sometimes it might be 10-days, etc). ALOT of Arizona and almost the entire state of Nevada is BLM land. Utah, California, New Mexico & Colorado have lots of boondocking places too.

Hey Amanda! This was a GREAT explanation of the item: camping toilet.
Genius idea with the box
You can even stick on an air freshener 😁

I'm confused (but interested!). Would you explain it in a little more detail, please?
way less smell keeping it separate ,but to each their ha :)
Could you please go into more detail. Like, do you have two cassettes or something?

Will you give a how to use this at a dumpstation tutorial ....like how to rinse out or take apart or sterilize
I really like your set up
Would not want to empty that thing! Rather go with compost or divided.

You should paint or wallpaper your box. I just got finished painting a cat condo with boxes. It could be boho and have your personal touch!
Another good idea💡

Empty into a toilet or porta potty. There is a tank on the bottom that can be separated and carried.

Biodegradable bags break down naturally.

I have 1 too🥰
I like that set up.
I thought about it Urdu king became a problem you did it mention how when you dump
Very nice! Thank you 🥰
Are you still using it? Looks like a PITA to clean and dispose. I would go with the collapsible camping toilet and black trash bags instead.
I'm using a collapsible toilet with litter and bags.
did you get the camping paper
How do you keep the inside of your van cool during warm weather?
Love the journey so much fun ☮️🕉☯️
Wait but how do you properly wash your hands or wipe your ***?
Where did you get your camping blanket with the trailers on it?
Bass Pro Shop!
When you take the box off have plenty of ventilation! Lol
I wouldn't even be able to lift it in and out of the van everyday but really nice toilet.

Is that the five gallon holding tank or the smaller one
I bought the 2 gallon one and chose it because I knew I wouldn't be able to carry the 5 gallon one.
It works for bowel movements also?
Of course!
@@AdventuringWithAmanda ty that’s good to know

I do not! I am 5'8.

Nobody likes to talk about how nasty it is when it's time to dumb it out. I don't think that it's a good idea to do #2!

Good toilet yet the flushing seems weak
It's really just supposed to give it a quick rinse. It doesn't actually "flush."
👍

Yes.
Its hard to find a place to dump these things. I mean you cant carry half a toilet into walmarts.lol
I have a home base apartment to dump, or I use campgrounds.
I wish to know, where do you park? Street? Or specific locations, such Walmart etc. Tks.
Normally campgrounds. Also rest areas. Hotel parking lots.
