My Adelae self-pollinated and formed viable seeds over late summer. Dozen or 2 per seed pod. Now I have dozens of volunteers in adjacent trays.

Your greenhouses are always so nice. Brad, could you do a video on dendrobium care? I watched a lot of your older ones for specific types but you never said what kind of soil and pot. Just sun, winter and water care. I have a smiliae and spectabile. If you have those could you talk about them? I also picked up some oncidium twinkles for the first time this year. Would love an update on how yours are doing. I'm enjoying the videos of the new greenhouses and property.

Whats the humidity in your highland nepenthes chamber, and also wouldnt having a grow light turned on like 12 hours a day take alot of electricity?

It’s a 150 watt light at full power, it’s not using a huge amount of electricity. LEDs are quite efficient.

Oh yes like he said, LED’s are extremely efficient though they’e often priced to match. The upfront cost is usually worth it in the long run though because the bulbs can last years or even decades and they produce very little heat in addition to the lower energy usage. I’ve never had them as grow-lights but I use LED Smart bulbs throughout my house, I balked at the $20 price-tag but they have a 15+ year lifespan. A typical bulb converts about 10-20% of the energy it receives into light while the rest radiates away as heat (not ideal for a climate controlled greenhouse I suspect) while Fluorescent bulbs bump that up to around 75% but LED’s are 80% efficient or even higher depending on the quality. I’m not sure if this translates directly to grow-lights but I think the principle is the same. One final advantage is that nicer LED bulbs can be programmed digitally to produce different colors and light wavelengths, I use it to make my living room different colors but you can take it even further with grow-lights and dynamically calibrate the light wavelengths to the ones plants actually need to produce food via Photosynthesis and therefore grow better/faster. I’m pretty sure most growers use the same light settings for all their plants, I don’t think it varies from plant to plant. You’ll notice purple LED’s if you’ve seen pictures of professional growers or greenhouses. This is because plants only use red and blue light wavelengths while reflecting the green ones (hence why most plants appear green to the human eye) so basically they’re fine-tuning the light bulbs color to the wavelengths the plants want and giving them all they can handle. Plus the lack of heat means they don’t have to worry about overdoing it. You can buy fluorescent bulbs that are a specific wavelength more suited to growing but they aren’t nearly as good and you can’t change it.
So yeah LED’s have many cool and useful features but some grow-lights can cost you an arm and a leg. LED’s are getting much more affordable though.

@@plantman3587 Did the picher go brown? If not then its probably okay for species like alata and maybe ventricosa, however if this frequently happens maybe try more humidity, shouldnt be a problem do.

I just got into trying to care for sundews. I’m here in Colorado so I know I need to possibly do a terrarium for them with a fogger for the humidity. I also got some pitcher plants as well and I was wondering if I could group them all together in the terrarium? Your opinion.
