If anyone's wondering why the audience seems less than enthused by this amazing performance, the description of the original upload (which was around 2014, if memory serves) provides an answer: This was during some form of music/bass camp at 8 in the morning after hours of rain. The fact that people still showed up to watch at all is praise enough if you ask me :D
I attended and recorded the audio for this performance. It was a rainy morning in April 2012 at Mako Music in Richmond, VA. Victor was gracious enough to come and play for these young students early in the morning eventhough he had two Flecktone shows later that day. That speaks to what kind of a person he is ❤
I'm sure I don't need to say this, but Victor is seriously one of the best bassists and musicians to ever live. He speaks the musical language better than many of us can speak our own native tongues. He could have filled this performance with many different techniques, but instead he opted for a simplistic approach that makes playing the bass look incredibly easy and natural - even the more complex parts! He is a true master of his craft.
@Courage Unlimted dude probably didn't know that Victor Wooten is one of Davie's inspiration for playing the bass. I mean, he once told that on an old vid before. Anyway, I'm not a bassist. I'm a drummer btw. But both Davie ans Victor were the ones who made me interested on bass guitar.
@@jackfrosthamgamer3495 Yes, I have heard and studied both of those composers. I go to university to study and play this stuff. While Mozart and Beethoven are fantastic composers in their own right, and I'm not at all diminishing their accomplishments and innovations, it is equally valid to hold contemporary musicians in that same league. The context of music has changed, as well. In the days of Mozart and Beethoven, the study of composition was fundamentally different than how it is today, and how it was in Victor's time. While their music is more complex, it also was very much a product of the time and involved study and innovation of their fellow and past composers. Victor Wooten has done exactly that, and also has an understanding of music that arguably is much more globally-informed than Mozart and Beethoven, who generally studied Western classical art music. Victor Wooten has studied that as well as music that has been influenced by many cultures from all around the world; jazz itself is a uniquely-American genre with strong roots in African and Creole music, all of which did not exist in either Mozart or Beethoven's spheres of study in their time. Is it fair to compare these musicians? No, because they were born centuries apart, and context matters. Is it fair to hold all three to the level of respect and recognition they deserve? Absolutely, and me praising Victor Wooten is by no means putting down Mozart or Beethoven or any other great Classical composer.
Thanks for uploading this, this is a performance very near and dear to me. It's what exposed me the what the bass guitar is really capable of and pushed me to buy one for myself eventually. Now the bass and music are my greatest joys in life.
Ditto with the performance remark dude, he didn't exactly encourage me to pick up a bass like yourself (a healthy obsession with metal done that), but he has been one of my greatest inspirations in life, literally..."what a dude!" :D
Great comment! But I think the realization of what a bass guitar is capable of really boils down to what Victor Wooten is capable of. Kinda like the capabilities of a paintbrush vs. who is painting with it. Not taking anything away from your inspiration, but perhaps adjusting where the inspiration truly came from. Great comment though! You made me think in a different perspective for sure.
It kind of makes me sad when it turns to them and I see them looking around with a black expression, I once went to a reggae concert and acted the same way and I always regret it even though I was a kid.
The fact that this only has a little under 400,000 views makes me sad. Still one of the best performances on a bass guitar or really any instrument I've ever seen, LEGEND
the original upload which got taken down for some reason had more views, if my memory serves right. im just glad it got reuploaded as this was the first vid i discovered victor wooten's playing.
The original song my family always said was about my mother, she passed when i was 6 un 2004 on the 1st of january. I walys loved this song. This cover made me think about it in a differnt way; i still cry every time i hear this version, i com back to this often. Thank you for this
There's the one big guy in back who's absolutely having a blast listening to his music, everyone else, especially the kids, seem disinterested lol. Victor Wooten is one of the reasons I got a bass, he's one of the greats in music.
the original video didnt have a comment section so im curious to see what the comments are gonna be like especially of the crowd. But of course victor wooten's playing is absolutely absurd. Most grooviest playing ever.
He turned them off because people were being rude to the people in the audience. People getting angry that the children aren't appreciating it as much as they think they should.
I always thought the crowd and the rain made the performance more peaceful and amazing, just victor Wooten playing the bass while people watch in the gentle rain
Everything about this performance is special. Victor experimenting, playing around, and giving this small crowd everything he has. Incredible displays of both groove and raw virtuosity. These kids out here in the rain watching one of the all time greats. An artist testing their limits in front of a small, intimate group.
My dear uncle Alfredo is a skilled old school bass player. He choosed this performance in the waiting time for 24th december family dinner… I just can’t forget
@@yugdails Nope. He's right. In any other age, Victor Wooten would have been the Beatles. Only in this hick's dark age of selfish antiintellectualism would this man's name not be a household term.
Always gets me teared up, it touches me deeply for some reason. Especially the very beginning, hoe innocent and shy the happy chords with a sad chord progression begin to play. I wonder if anyone experiences the same. All the best to everybody, love another ❤️.
Thank goodness I could find this! Out of the blue, I was just tempted to rewatch this, so I went scrolling through pages and pages of "victor wooten isn't she lovely rainy day" trying to find this. 2023, still one of the most heartwarming and sophisticated base play I’ve ever seen in my life my favorite point is the rainy weather and kids audience got chilling by Victor’s sound
Victor is an amazing bass player, musician, and arranger, and such a class act and nice guy. But someone has to mention it. What a song writer Stevie Wonder is, and a nod to Les Paul for pioneering the layering of loops that Victor uses for parts of this. Giants on the shoulders of giants here.
man, a Detroit classic!!! I’m just getting into bass and can’t wait to see what he does here. Isn’t She Lovely is a jam!! And victor Wooten is A LEGEND. ✨🎵

I want Victor Wooten to come and play in *my* garden! How do I book him? Do you think those people realised they were going to hear one of the best bass players in the world or did they just come for a barbecue?
@Spelling-B_champ-PauL ...this is especially impressive because the bass guitar is so usually a musical instrument to accompany, like a tympany is for an orchestral and for him to solo with only a bass guitar with a repetitive instrumental, second bassist or himself is impressive to say the least
