I know of two of those engines abandoned in the basement of a telephone company building in Springfield Massachusetts. They were put in when the building was under construction in the 1930’s and are too big to remove.
Wow, that is a beautiful power plant. Even the skid pan under the engine is clean. The plant engineers really take pride in the machines there. It would be a joy to work on this equipment IF something goes wrong because it's so clean and well maintained. Happy to see someone keeping the old iron running! Thanks for sharing this video.
In 1991 I worked for Florida Gas Transmission at compressor station # 20 in Ft Pirece FL we had 3 Worthington units, 2 6 cylinder units rated at 1500 HP and 1 8 cylinder unit rated at 2000 HP. They ran at 345 rpms still in service today moving natural gas thru pipeline system. Worked there till 1995 was a great job.

Operated and maintained 4-1000KW Worthington straight 8 Cylinder generator sets at Vandenberg AFB CA in 1973-1974. The generators put out 2400/4160 VAC. We used them to support Titan satellite launches in parallel with commercial power for uninterrupted countdowns.
This is really interesting! I am a 3d environmental and Character artist currently building a Titan One facility. I have a few questions about the Worthington engines that you operated within the Power Dome, specifically model and dimensional data if available. I'm trying to build it as close to the original as possible. Any and all help is greatly appreciated! Cheers 🍻
@@MrSandman3D I wish I could help but It was back in 1973-74 that I was stationed at Power Plant 6 at Vandenberg. I don't remember the model number or dimensions. The power plant was a couple miles away from the Space Launch Comlex. The plant may be gone by now.
@@ricelaker Thank you so much for the reply. I have some rough dimensions from the Denver, Colorado sites. Mostly the footprint of the engines that I'm using for reference beings that is all that remains in these sites are the mounting studs protruding from the powerhouse floor foundation. I will have a video up on my channel very soon in regards to the Denver Titan silo complexes built within 3D space. It is a massive work in progress. I will post updates on the project as much as possible. Any and all critiques for accuracy are welcome and greatly appreciated. Cheers!
@@MrSandman3D I never did see a Titan site as the Titans I supported were IIIDs that were launched from gantries like you see at Cape Canaveral carrying classified satellites. They had large boosters attached.
@Ken Schaefer That is very interesting. I've not seen much of those sites before! The only information I have found on these was provided by the grounds keeper, Pete, at 724c just outside of Denver. I'm absolutely fascinated by the engineering, design, and construction of these systems. Very complex. Thank you for your time! Cheers 🍻
These were common at most older (Many decommissioned nowadays) missile silos across the US. If only there was at least one of these silos left with the generators still in place.
I am not sure about that. I think someone else may have commented they saw them in one. But of course Worthington made a bunch of different models over the years and these are from the 50's, not sure when they stopped making this model and when the silos were built.
It sounds like there is an exhaust leak or something mechanical tapping/clunking...or is one cylinder acting like an air compressor much like many locomotive engines?

Providence Bellard? Something like that?

Awesome!
Shows how valuable maintenance can be

Great sounding old time diesel generator! Very impressive!
Incredible condition.
It's run a few times a year for peak-shaving on an island.
Excellent engineering!
Look like Electric Machine Company generators on those Worthington Engines!
I believe you are correct. I forget what the EM was short for, but they were EM 3750kVA , 2400V alternators. Frame C-81 type.

No, these have been in place since the 50's. Good to know there are still more out there, sure a lot have been scrapped.
All the pipes, pumps, huge engine, just to spin a generator.
4190 BHP on nameplate, not sure of displacement. I don't know as much about the Worthington's as the EMD's.
Are these the same generators that were installed in Titan 1 missile silos?

I can't believe it needs a separate fuel pump.
Located in or manufactured? These are not located in NY. I've heard there is a few more somewhere in the NE I think.
I used to worl here :)
When? I know a Bill A, not a Bill K.
What's the actual CID or hp? Looks line an EMD next door. What island. I remember they had a few Worthington's at a sewage treatment plant close by.
Are these the one's from Syracuse,NY USA ?
I want one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Would you know the cubic inch displacement per cylinder or total displacement and hp?
4190 BHP 3000KW at 450 RPM, that's all the info on the nameplate.
It sounds like there is an exhaust leak or something mechanical tapping/clunking...or is one cylinder acting like an air compressor much like many locomotive engines?
Exhaust leak
I thought these were from an Auction held in Syracuse,NY. They sold six complete Worthington generator set's,thought these were those.
@ Low Budget ,when did these get auctioned in Syracuse? Do you mean the 1950's, or a later date? Were they manufactured in/near Syracuse?
is this still actively used today ? Where for what ?
