    Madonna making visual statements like this in her SIXTIES shows why she’s such an unparalleled artist. When she’s long gone, her staggering legacy will remain. One of her most important videos, and that’s saying a lot considering it wasn’t even released until 2019…nearly 40 years after her debut.

      Absolutely! I filmed a reaction after this to Holiday on American Bandstand (should be on Patreon tonight) and it blew my mind that it was the same person!

    I think you nailed a lot of the points. Madonna growing up as it were in NY queer/POC/underground dance/art culture, she’s often cited the dancefloor as a metaphor for life. The Pulse shooting in Orlando was at the time the biggest mass gun shooting in US history. The irony of a queer ‘safe space’ being used as target practice for a mass shooter is not lost on us, as is the children as repeated victims of gun violence in schools. This very much a parable on life vs death. Good vs evil. Joy vs despair. There are so many clever details in here… the dance club being called the Globe and the marquee message being ‘We need to Wake Up’ the fact that she’s robbed before going to the club, as she was a victim of robbery and raped when she was young living in NYC… and even that her blonde character sees a mass shooting at a school being reported on, but she basically ignores it, only to be robbed, then killed later. By ignoring and being desensitized to the violence we eventually become victims as well.. and all those scraps of paper being thrown away, like people our stories are being written but then cut short and thrown away like garbage. This song and the video are the masterpieces of the Madame X era. Yes it’s complex, heavy and dark, but it’s so absolutely needed and cleverly done. The genius of taking spoken word, a mourning choir and a thumping disco beat and merging them all into a song is masterful. 🔟🔟🔟

      Great post and yes, musically it is masterful too. What's the deal with the vocoder on her voice? Did she have an issue with her voice that made it necessary, or was it a stylistic choice?

    • @graphiquejack
      @graphiquejack Рік тому +7

      @@bridgethegapreactions it was definitely a stylistic choice. I heard a theory that she wanted it to sound like she was so angry, she was speaking with her teeth clenched. Dunno if that's true or not, though. She used a lot of vocoder on this album, which I wish she'd lay off of a bit. It makes what she's saying sound remote and emotionless, which considering the themes, is an odd choice. Overall, I feel this is her best album since Confessions... it's not perfect, but this song is the standout on the album and I applaud the experimentation and the fearlessness in tackling difficult themes. It's a sign of the times when early folk and rock music used to tackle controversial issues in the 60s and 70s, but nowadays people 'cancel' you for speaking your mind on an issue.

    Great reaction Jonny! As an American I also lost hope regarding gun control after Sandy Hook. I believe this references the PULSE nightclub shooting in Florida, but there are sadly so many examples. Definitely one of her best videos, though not a fun watch. I’m sure it’s no coincidence that Jonas directed this and American Life. Some fans would prefer Madonna to stay stuck in a specific musical era, but an album like Madame X is why I’ve continued to love her for decades. M is always pushing herself and audience, and there are some who drop off in the process ✌️

    Madame X is a name given to Madonna by Martha Graham, when Madonna was a student and company member. Because everyday Martha didn’t know which Madonna would show up as it was a mystery, so hence the name. Madonna was a Rebel from the beginning. She was a professional dancer before pop star.

    Who has the conviction and guts and artistic vision and intelligence in today's pc, gutless, bullshit culture to raise these issues and fearlessly execute and articulate them with this chilling song and video? There is no one else around that has the courage to say these things and address these very promenent and important issues and say these obvious things that need to be said. But Madonna has never kept quiet or shut her mouth when she felt the need to speak up about things that she feels passionate about. Her attitude and straight forward no bullshit handling of this subject is remarkable and inspiring. This is a masterpiece and brave artistic statement. Queen. J

    We are so lucky to have Madonna 40 years into her career making songs like this and not just singing covers etc. Madonna is constantly pushing the boundaries. This song should have a been a bigger hit but radios don’t want to play it so sad.

    As a Brit who moved to the US in 2014, gun violence is the biggest thing I fear living here. After the Pulse nightclub shooting it took a lot for me to go out and feel safe among my own community. Even now I have friends who won't come to gay pride events with me any more because they fear there will be a mass shooting at one of them. Every time I go to the cinema, I always check for all the escape routes. At work I have to watch training videos each year on what to do in the event of a gun violence incident. I often feel like as a non-citizen I need to shut up and accept it, but as a resident I do have a right to life. This is perhaps one of Madonna's greatest videos. It brings tears to my each time I watch it.

    I fear people are missing the point to Madonna's Work. She puts in your face the issues going on in the world we live in. She forces you to pay attention, to WAKE UP. The people offended by this are only looking at the gore and violence. But, this really is happening more and more each day. Unfortunately kids and LGBTQ people are targeted. We need better laws to protect against gun violence. Great reaction and thank you for understanding what Modonna is trying to say.

    Thanks for your reaction. My take on the video is that dark haired Madonna as Madame X is telling this story. She keeps trying to make the outcome better for the blonde Madonna but the fact of the matter is she can’t. That’s why she gets irritated with what she types and throws away what she has written. This video always gets me teary eyed. The picture on the wall is Frida Kahlo.

  • @daytoy
    @daytoy Рік тому +8

    Angela Davis is indeed one of the framed photos hanging on the wall, along with Frida Kahlo. There are two timelines happening here obviously: the dark-haired, bespectacled Madonna's timeline is moving forward, as she is frustrated by what she is powerless to stop; and the blonde Madonna, whose timeline is moving backward. I think the reason why this song and video are both so controversial is that, apart from the hot-button issue it is portraying, Madonna isn't absolving the audience from blame either. The blonde Madonna is portrayed as oblivious to the deadly reality around her, even when it blares from her TV screen at the beginning of the night and literally pokes its ugliness at her as she walks down the alley. Everyone is both victim and enabler of this lethal situation.

    This song is really cool and weird. I don't love the video as much as some other fans do. It's a little messy IMO. That said, it's obviously very powerful. And what other artist 35+ years into their career would put out an album like this, with videos like this and "Dark Ballet," taking on these issues? She could have easily just re-made Ray of Light or Confessions on a Dance Floor over and over for the last 25 years, but she's an artist who refuses to stand still or do what expected of her, which is why I'm always so disappointed and confused about why people don't see that and show her more respect. This video got very little views, and the song didn't chart anywhere. She continues to do and say what she wants even as her album sales continue to decline because of it. And then when she *does* try to do something more mainstream or popular, she's accused of being desperate. End of rant!

    This song could very well be titled-“Wake Up! No One Is Safe”. This fearlessness to tackle serious socio-political issues thru art-consistently throughout her iconic career is what makes her relevant through time. She carries on the tradition of protest art/music from great artists like Bob Dylan, Pete Seeger, Picasso, Keith Haring, Frida Kahlo, others. She worked on this album from 2017-2019 at a time when the geopolitical environment is highly polarized with the rise of illiberal authoritarian populist ideology that’s anathema to her core beliefs and advocacy. It would have been completely out of character for Madonna to ignore what was going on and not say something through her music. Six of the 18 songs on the Madame X album/deluxe editions has socio-political messaging: Dark Ballet, God Control, Killers Who Are Partying, Batuka, Extreme Occident, I Rise. Then the Covid pandemic/lockdown hit in 2020, add an economic recession and presidential elections in America-all these distracted the attention of the pop music world. Gradually as the world emerge from these crises, I believe pop music lovers will begin to give more appreciation for this great album.

    The video was going back in time. It started with what happened at the end if the night and then tracked her journey from earlier on in the night. She didn't raise the dead. And then she's sitting at the typewriter imaging this entire storyline, looking at us through the camera as she tries to find ways to convince us about gun control through the script/video idea she's writing.

    Many people were upset about this video including some survivors of gun violence, but there were others who witnessed horrors like this who said it was time someone showed the ugly, terrifying truth. I don't know how many people changed their view on gun control by seeing this video but it clearly wasn't enough. The line "each new birth, it gives me hope" actually does give me hope that our young people will grow up to make the necessary changes to laws on gun control that the current "adults" in power clearly refuse to.

    This video is a representation of gun violence that lead to mass murders, using the Pulse Night Club, an LGBTQIA club in Orlando, Florida as the template to Madonna’s cause. I’ll try not to go into a rant about my issue with gun violence in the US, but gun violence is the #1 killer of children here in the USofA. The Republican Party portion of our US government finds saving our children by cancelling drag queen story time more important than to restrict military grade assault rifles to the public. We’ve had multiple mass shootings where a gunman walks into a store, a place of worship, a club, or even our schools and just start shooting. Here in Texas, where I’m from, our most recent mass shooting had a lone gunman go into an elementary school and kill 19 4th grade children and two teachers. Yet the Republican Party doesn’t seem to be bothered by these deaths. They’re more concerned about the freedom to own these type of weapons rather than to protect our children from them. These politicians are more afraid of drag queens doing harm than the person pulling the trigger at a child’s face!

    I think the two mass shootings she is referencing are the Orlando Pulse night club massacre and the Parkland High School shooting. Excellent review!! This is the Pulse shooting in Orlando, FL. "On June 12, 2016, Omar Mateen, a 29-year-old man, killed 49 people and wounded 53 more in a mass shooting at Pulse, a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, United States. Orlando Police officers shot and killed him after a three-hour standoff." The House of Representatives and the Senate had a clear Democrat majority for two years under President Obama and President Biden. Either or both presidents could have signed legislation into law but they never did anything praiseworthy. When the Democrats are out of power they blame Republicans for mass shootings. Yet, the Democrats had 4 years of the last 14 years to do whatever they wanted. It's so political that it is ridiculous on both sides.
