The A’s totally snookered Alameda County and the City of Oakland. The County sold its half of the Coli in good faith because, at the time, the A’s claimed their lack of ownership made the Coli undesirable. When the A’s bought half of the Coli and didn’t immediately settle in, we all should have recognized the screw. And now, the A’s can hold that site hostage forever. Where they could have built whatever they wanted, they are choosing to leave an empty, undeveloped crater. The County got hustled. The City got stuck with a lousy partner. The A’s stole half the Coli for cheap, and still got free money to build a new stadium elsewhere. The fans got dissed in the most atrocious way. This is one of the most nauseating stories in all of pro sports.
Can we get an absurd comment here from Manfred on how Oakland just couldn’t get it done in Oakland, more implications that Fisher just tried so hard and Oakland is just a mess.
@letsgowalk you are 100% right if Kyler Murray turned out to be a Mark McGuire or Jason Giambi. I don't think Kyler was on the McGuire level coming out of college. As you know he wouldnt have sniffed $230 million dollars with the A's. I am just now learning how MESSY the A's organization is, with this stadium ordeal with the city of Oakland and Alameda County.
What I don’t get is why didn’t Alameda County include a clause in the contract that in return for selling their half of the Coliseum site for below market value the A’s could not legally leave Oakland under any circumstances
C'mon, man! That property is worth WAY too much to let the A's squat on it for four or five more years, especially for a sum of money they already contractually owe. I would leave their luggage out in the parking lot before 2024 starts...
Fisher won't pay it. I've mentioned this aspect several times, and it goes without saying that the longer the JPB and the joint powers themselves delay creating the paperwork and serving the the A's, this will get harder and harder to collect on. The A's will try a shell game probably - they'll move the team and everything in Nevada to a new entity (the Las Vegas A's), leave the Oakland mess in the old one (the Oakland A's), declare bankruptcy on the Oakland side, and stiff everybody in California. A truly Trumpian business tactic. I would also add that it's imperative that the JPB legal team serve Major League Baseball as well, as they are very much a complicit party in this con. Attaching MLB to the carnage will do two things: 1) aid in whatever civil suit the city and county may bring (a la St. Louis), and; 2) contribute mightily to a new RICO case against Baseball as a whole, building upon what MLB did in Montreal. (This is a whole lot worse than what they did in Montreal.)...It's quite evident from everything that has transpired that the A's are already functionally surviving on OPM. That this "measly" $45 million tab gets paid is a foregone conclusion is very wrongheaded. The A's have turned into the dumpster divers of professional sports, a disgrace to anyone associated with them, and I do kinda agree with some who say that MLB owners are letting Fisher self-destruct over this farce. In doing so they can confiscate, resalvage, and repackage the A's as an expansion franchise down the road - upping their expansion fee haul from $4 billion to $6 billion. Oakland and Alameda need to assure that they get the lion's share of that extra $2 billion (or more), not just to remedy actual damages, but as an overwhelming deterrent to such shenanigans in the future...
Hope Goldman Sachs is watching this. If Fisher can't/won't pay a mere $45M, how is he going to repay a billion dollar construction loan with interest? Better put up his soccer team/stadium/GAP stock/real estate/future revenue streams as collateral.
If I recall, the A's purchased the land after the Warriors announced their intension to move back to San Francisco and turn the arena into a performing arts center, similar to the Forum in Los Angeles and build a new stadium on the site. I alos wonder if the A's could possibly be evicted before or during the 2024 season?
The County should ask for it immediately. They are losing hundreds of thousand in interest and opportunity costs. Maybe there is something in the back of their heads that’s feels there is something that can get them to stay.
Looks like they wanted out of Oakland in 2018. They wanted to buy the land so they could “squat” on the land when their 11 billion dollar development didn’t happen. The A’s knew it wouldn’t happen by the way. A new stadium could have been built on the land at any time since 1995 when the Raiders said they were coming back.
You got them, they are calling off the move now, you finally found the gotcha to keep the A’s in Oakland. I can’t believe that the A’s did not see this coming, maybe they did not get an email reminder on the payment.
Good one. They were probably too busy they forgot to check the mailbox with the reminder. If they only had the finance acumen of their critics. Now I expect they will cancel the move with their tails between their legs, and beg to stay in the Coliseum for the next 50 years.
SoCal Mitch off that Vegas education. Man can’t even rationalize adult conversation. Imagine showing up to a video of a team you don’t support or understand to talk shit about what you don’t even understand….. Yeah that’s SoCal- bitch for ya
@@purplecrayon7281Or in the (highly unlikely) scenario the move to LV hits a snag, the Commissioner magically grows a pair, confers with his "boys" and they "recommend" Fisher sell the team. @@michaelhertzberg2157 Do you still follow the Raiders? What % of of Bay Area residents still follow them out of curiosity? You can follow the Dodgers out of spite. lol Unlike Fischer they’ll spend $ to field a competitive product and are the Giants biggest advertisers.
The Raiders probably have more fans from SoCal than they ever did in NorCal. Their situation is different because they were in LA for a few years. Some believe the Raiders have more fans in SoCal than the Rams and Chargers combined. For baseball, LA fans love the Dodgers, and to a lesser extent the Angels. Maybe the A's could move in a bit. With the high speed training linking LV and LA, anything is possible.

Just sell the team already!
I hope Oakland gives fisher the middle finger and makes them find somewhere else to play #FJF
Yup...
You'd have to think the rest of the owners want to be rid of this clown already.
The city should use eminent domain to acquire the A’s half back. File it right now.
Kyler Murray and his management team are looking like the smartest guys in the room.

The City of Oakland should charge the A's their half of the land for the 2025-2027 seasons extension.
C'mon, man! That property is worth WAY too much to let the A's squat on it for four or five more years, especially for a sum of money they already contractually owe. I would leave their luggage out in the parking lot before 2024 starts...
That's the deal that is there to be made. Oak. wants something, A's want something. Win, win for both sides even with a tough situation.
That's a win for the A's, period. The A's get an extra benefit from something that was already owed...
I hope the city is collecting interest for every day that passes on that 85mil owed.

This "planned" move to Vegas is hugely half-baked.
Fisher will stick the bill with the people of Las Vegas as yet another honor of getting the absolute shittiest run team in MLB history …

No. Their lease is through December 2024.
Sure if they want to pay Fisher more money for a breach of contract and compensate him for lost revenue that results from doing so.
