- Oakland announced it's launching a partnership with the African American Sports and Entertainment Group in a deal that includes an exclusive negotiating agreement to develop the Coliseum complex.
As the Athletics entertain relocation prospects, many Oakland community members have been wondering what will happen to the Coliseum. Thursday's deal is the initial step toward the future.
"We're talking about new public facilities … more retail in an underserved part of Oakland … hospitaility and entertainment options, more sports," Mayor Sheng Thao said. "We're talking about affordable housing, so that we can keep those who have lived here in Oakland for generations and their families can continue to live here."
The Oakland-based AASEG was founded in 2020 with a mission to use sports and entertainment to create a path for enhanced economic equity for the black community. The group wants to transform the hundreds of acres of land surrounding the Coliseum site into a center for sports, entertainment and residential use.
The group's other visions include forming the first majority Black-owned NFL franchise and bringing a WNBA team to Oakland.
Councilmember Treva Reid represents part of east Oakland and believes these investments could impact generations to come.
“If you look at nearly every disparity rate, we are struggling with that crippling impact and so, we want to see what will take place here and how that will have a ripple effect,” Reid said.
AASEG will have two years to bring a final proposal to city council. But to make their dreams a reality, they will also need to work with the Oakland A’s, who own half the property.
“Our goal is to just cooperate together and figure out what the best use of the site is for the community to move forward. We are hopeful that piece can be connected too,” said AASEG founder Ray Bobbitt.
With city council’s support, many see this as an opportunity to create a new future for a city that’s desperate for change.
“We have lost tens of thousands of black residents in our city and it is a state of emergency and hopefully with this project, we can stop the bleeding,” said Oakland District 6 Councilmember Kevin Jenkins.
The deal reportedly is the largest transfer of public land to an African American-led group in Oakland’s 171-year history.

Mannn if Oakland can get both Howard Terminal locked in with the A’s and the current Coliseum site redeveloped, the future for the East Bay is really going to be promising!!
Thanks Brodie!!

Nope. Not happening. Las Vegas A's in 2025. Deal with it.
@@hoapres agreed
I think it is hilarious that the East Oakland Stadium Alliance, whose entire shtik is to try to kill Howard Terminal by pretending to favor a new stadium on the Coliseum site, couldn't even be bothered to (pretend to) complain about the AASEG agreement.
A's have no development or Land use authority on Coliseum Site. Brodie you keep ignoring this but obviously haven't read the agreement with County and A's
They said this would generate 20000 to 30000 jobs. What BS. Name one WNBA team that generates 1000.
They not mentioning how our terminal means they probably don’t care about the Oakland A’s at all
Just in case if A's leave Oakland will the city seize the other half of the Coliseum site ownership??? Or they'll just buy it normally??? 🤔🤔🤔
What about a stadium for an MLS and XFL team? Or you can turn the Coliseum site into an open-air concert venue like the Shoreline Amphitheater with the surrounding area turned into a vast park-like Golden Gate Park.
You wouldn't be starting a new community in E Oakland but the revitalization of an existing neighborhood that desperately needs it!
Can AASG just develop one of the two large parking lots
The site would be a perfect place to turn into housing!
Brodie, I wish you could cover the Oakland Roots sometimes... people actually care about them locally and they are the only Oakland franchise that actually reciprocates... If they can make it to MLS, watch out!! LAFC OWNS Los Angeles locally here in L.A. and I sense a similar passion for the Roots... THEY are the team that should get a stadium at the Coliseum site NOT a WNBA team that can't even draw a fraction of MLS' league wide average attendance of 22k... Oakland is probably gonna blow it again with neglecting their Roots while chasing a WNBA team that dosen't even exist yet and even if it did will NEVER have the long term potential of the Roots franchise even in USL...
I may live in L.A. now, but I certainly know my Oakland Roots...
Unfortunately MLS sees only one team in the Bay Area the SJ Earthquakes mainly because they have been in the Bay Area longer & have a deeper history. This despite the fact that the Earthquakes have been bad for years & attendance has been poor at PayPal Park. Oakland's recent history of teams leaving (or close to leaving in the case of the A's) also doesn't help the Roots'chances of making it into MLS. I agree with you that the Oakland Roots would be a better choice as the Bay Area's MLS team than the Earthquakes because they actually have momentum on their side and the fans are excited about the future.
@@chrisguardiano6143 The Quakes are like the Galaxy and RBNY... If MLS wants to get it right in the Bay Area, a second franchise in Oakland would be a shot in the arm for everyone involved. Oakland would immediately have one of the most passionate fan bases in the league on par with the Portland Timbers. I just don't know if anyone has any sense anywhere to realize that...
I sure hope that somehow someway they can pull this off!!!
Anyone suggesting that Oakland will ever have an NFL team other than the Raiders should put... down... the crack pipe. The Oakland Raiders were a legacy of the AFL-NFL merger, and when the team moved to Las Vegas (unlike the move to Los Angeles), the league re-formed the 49'ers home territory to include Oakland.
Oakland will NEVER get another NFL team.
Lol put the pipe down 😂🤣
Stop it. No the league did not re-formed home territory smh. It's always been a part of their territory. This isn't the A's-Giants situation
@@baucedixon8067it’s about to be once the A’s leave Oakland.
@@milesmayhem5440 talking Niners man lol
What exactly is the AASEG?
African American Sports and Entertainment Group. A local organization lobbying for development in Oakland.
Hmmm, the Arena that gonna be renovated for WNBA, and probably also a soccer stadium for USL... 🤔🤔🤔
I hope the Roots can get a stadium there
That will generate 500 jobs. There 30000 is a pipedream. Where's the study?
The WNBA would go broke tomorrow, without corporate welfare. Doesn't make money, so there's no tax revenue for the city.
They are just coming to terms with the fact that the As are leaving.
Who wants the A's?
Final nail in the coffin that the City of Oakland has moved on from the A’s.
Not necessarily
