I loved this book from start to finish. Carrie is a brash, blunt character, yes, but that’s part of what drew me to her. I don’t have to connect with a character or even like them to enjoy a book but I understood what she was trying to accomplish and her drive to get there was admirable. Coming back from retirement, clawing her way through matches with younger, fitter, faster opponents? The once greatest player in the world now an underdog? What a premise. I loved it.
Controversial Opinion: I thought this book was amazing and it had me hooked immediately. I loved the father/daughter story, but the best part was the timeliness of the release/my read. I was able to listen to this book while the US Open was playing on a TV in a local restaurant. Serena Williams was playing her final tournament and it made the stakes in the book feel that much higher as I reached the end of the story. Truly perfect timing.
As someone who loves sports and I mean LOVES sports Carrie Soto is Back was a book that I never knew I needed. It was simply amazing from the start to the finish!! A major aspect of the book that I loved so much was how focused Carrie was on tennis, she almost didn't care about anything else. I feel that it was an interesting perspective she took for her writing, the details were my favorite part about it. But I also see why people who aren't so interested in tennis or sports in general wouldn't love it.
I thought it was amazing and the character arc was perfectly executed! Carrie’s personality is so strong it would have been completely unbelievable and forced had she come to her growth moment any sooner. I agree it was a lot of tennis, which I knew nothing about, but it really had my heart racing as I read the details of each match.
I tooootally relate to your thoughts! I feel like I could predict the ending to this book a mile away after we got into part 2, and some of the typical things I love in TJR’s books just wasn’t present. Like I LOVE when she has a plot-twist element, but that was missing here. Also, I love how TJR always balances whatever topic she is writing about with character writing, but this book truly just felt like it was about tennis, and that was literally Carrie’s entire personality. She did have some growth in the end, but it just kinda felt like a typical sport storyline with someone that is hugely competitive? I wish I loved this one more, I’ve nearly read all of TJR’s backlist and I love her writing, but this book and Malibu Rising were disappointing for me 😢
i absolutely loved this book and could not put it down! And i knew literally zero about tennis, but the plot totally hooked me. i loved that that our protagonist was driven and not entirely likeable, but she didnt give a damn about being liked. she wanted to be the best, and didn't apologize for it. Something men have full permission to do without being labeled a "bitch". And i LOVED her relationship with her dad, he felt like such a complete, vivid, and imperfect beautiful character. Bowe Huntley was maybe written a bit too feminist "i love strong woman" for a man of that time period and it sometimes felt a little sappy and forced... but hey what do i know maybe there were a handful of sweet, thoughtful, un-prideful guys back then lol
omggg same! i’ve been searching for some “bad” review because i didnt enjoy it that much and everybody seems to love it?! i couldnt agree more with you, it is monotonous and i didn’t feel it has the plot that taylor is known for
I thought it was alright too. Solid 3.5 for me. It was an OK story with good writing,. But I've come to expect more from Taylor Jenkins Reid and that expectation led to just a bit of disappointment for me.
hi, i also have the uk version but some of the chapter pages are half blank and I'm not sure if there's meant to be something there. i got it from waterstones so I don't think its a mistake or anything but is it the same in yours? page 211 as an example
this is the first review I'm watching because everyone else seems to love everything she writes. the thing is I thought evelyn hugo was nice, but very poor writing; while daisy jones was fantastic to me, but mostly because I really connected to the main character. couldn't finish malibu rising and the first chapter of that other one (the husband who comes back from death) was so boring and predictable to me... so I guess I won't be reading this one either lol. I'm not into tennis, not connected to my father whatsoever and the character seems to be blunt 😭 I really wanted to get into her books though
Just finished this one today… a nope for me. It felt like it was simply written with the hope of it becoming a movie. The characters aren’t anything we haven’t seen before in better books. The story is formulaic and predictable. I always like they way she weaves articles and reports in her books, so I liked that. But, I feel like people who have no tennis knowledge might also skip some pages just because it’s very tennis-detailed. I didn’t think Evelyn Hugo was a nice person and it worked. I don’t care for Carrie at all. At it didn’t work.
I was really looking forward to this book I got it on release day but unfortunately I didn’t like it. The character Carrie is so forgettable not much to her at all nothing that made me connect with her. all Carrie did was complain through the book it all felt repetitive. This author has written some fantastic books but this is not one of them. I couldn’t connect with any of the characters not much of a story outside of the tennis matches
I love tennis and TJR books but this was also a big disappointment for me: 3 stars. My least favorite of her books too. We're friends on goodreads so if you want to check out my review there or in Insta 😉
Lovely video ☺️❤️ I've really enjoyed the four books I've read by Taylor Jenkins Reid but am not planning on picking up Carrie Soto. It just doesn't sound like my thing at all. I don't really care about sports 😅

So happy you loved the book! Her drive for another glam slam title was indeed very inspiring 👌🏻

I love this one. Just finished and wow! Loved it from start to finish.
Glad you did!!
I seriously cannot put it down

I really liked this book. Got through it in 4 hours. I'd give it 4.5 stars. I don't even like tennis.
Glad you enjoyed it 😊
I've been trying to finish it but it feels like it'll never end 🤣 It's the first Taylor's book that I didn't like...
Great sports book, no doubt. Very well written
But…. I kept hoping for more, and more never came.
Great video! I agree a lot with your conclusions.
I thought it was alright too. Solid 3.5 for me. It was an OK story with good writing,. But I've come to expect more from Taylor Jenkins Reid and that expectation led to just a bit of disappointment for me.
Curently reading it and... not loving it....100% with you
I was totally disappointed as well!! 🥺 such a bummer
Right 😢😢😢

Oh noooo bestie haha I’ve been def hearing some not great things about the rep in it 😅
Oooh that’s not good!! Do you have something I can read about regarding the rep? 😁

Agreed 🥺
I have it on audio… I’ve heard such mixed things 🥲
Definitely just pick up the audiobook 🫢
I enjoyed your video.
OMG Carrie's personality describes my neighbor whom every time I want to go out I peek to see if she's not outside lol 🤣
Thank you so much!! I would honestly be afraid of Carrie too 😂
I'm a big tennis fan & player ... but I found Carrie unlikable ... for most of the book -- so I didn't like the novel or story much. Bummer!
"Monotonous" should be pronounced the way you pronounce it.
was gezellig in de bus hehe :)
Jaaa zeker 😄 zo leuk je te ontmoeten!!
✨❤️✨
The ending was so disappointing.
This sounds like the biggest disappointment and so frustrating!
Tbh it was 🥲
I've just finished it and ,even I gave it 3 stars, yeah I'm lowkey disappointed
I know right 😩
I loved the videobut the book sounds soooo boring XD
Hahaha thanks Michelle 😂🫶🏻
Yeah, I have no interest in this book whatsoever. Anything to do with sport makes me snooze.
Then I won’t pick it up indeed 😓
It’s always the same with her. Boring and cheesy.
Oh noooo I Hope i will like it. I am also Not Interested in tennis and more in TJR‘s Writing style. The Book is already Sitting on my TBR 😅🫣
Aaaaah so sorry!! But hopefully you’ll enjoy it more than I did 🥹
I love tennis and TJR books but this was also a big disappointment for me: 3 stars. My least favorite of her books too. We're friends on goodreads so if you want to check out my review there or in Insta 😉
Noooo such a pity 🥲 I honestly don’t care about tennis so idk if I even want to pick it up haha
Hahaha then I won’t really recommend it, honestly a bit of a waste of time 🫢🫢🫢

Thank you ❤️❤️ Yeah, I wouldn’t give it a go then and just stick with her other novels 🥲
I almost dnf-d so many times but forced myself to finish🥲 I felt nothing towards these characters!
