This book was amazing and had me hooked immediately. I loved the father/daughter story, but the best part was the timeliness of the release/my read. I was able to listen to this book while the US Open was playing on a TV in a local restaurant. Serena Williams was playing her final tournament and it made the stakes in the book feel that much higher as I reached the end of the story. Truly perfect timing.
This was and is my first & only Taylor Jenkins Reid book so far and I LOVED it!! (which is surprising because I could care less about tennis or any sports). The audiobook was recommended as an awesome way to read this book and boy did it deliver. It really brought the whole thing to life. Also, with the audiobook, you can speed up the tennis matches if you don’t care about all the details and then the matches just become a very suspenseful & exciting part of the story. A big part of the reason that I loved this book was because I absolutely adore Carrie’s father. I also really enjoyed the realistic portrayal of Carrie’s romantic relationships & entanglements (rather than the schmaltzy kind of thing you get in a typical romance). I enjoyed the deeper themes of growth & forced reinvention because we all inevitably hit that “Who Moved My Cheese Moment” at least a few times in our lives and we have to figure out how to accept that it is gone and go fund some new cheese (rather than continually banging our heads against the wall trying fruitlessly to get back the old cheese).
Thanks so much! I was apprehensive like you. I loved Daisy Jones & Evelyn Hugo. Malibu rising was a disappointment. I'm glad she's getting back to writing about these fireball characters. I feel It's when she really shines (at least for me). Thanks for the review! You really heightened my anticipation level.
I re-read Malibu Rising last week in anticipation of this book and I have to say I liked it much better this time around. For me it was a book on survival of these siblings. In fact Daisy Jones was a book I did not much care for. Lol! Anyways, I’m looking forward to this book. I used to play and watch tennis with my dad as a kid ❤️
There was a woman golfer in the 50s I think would pre tournament would ask-"Which one of you ladies is going to finish second?" I think that may have inspired this book.
To be honest, it was unbearably difficult for me to finish the book, there is practically no plot - the whole plot consists of never-ending descriptions of physical trainings and tennis matches, Carrie seems to be a completely unlikable character, while reading I realized that I couldn’t empathize with her. This book basically gave me a big headache, unfortunately for me this book appeared to be a very boring one.
I've heard there are stereotypical depictions of Hispanics. Do you think the author is guilty of that or could have modified that in this book? Makes me less than enthused about this novel. Thanks.
I just finished this book. I didn’t think there were stereotypical depictions of Hispanics. It’s mentioned at the beginning that her father was a professional South American tennis player when he was young but throughout the rest of the book Carrie’s ethnicity isn’t really mentioned. She and her father do speak Spanish to each other throughout the book and she mentions she didn’t look like the other kids at the country club tennis courts but beyond that nothing much is mentioned about her background. It’s all about Carrie being the best player in the world. I recommend reading this book, I loved it. I wasn’t looking forward to it because I didn’t think much of Carrie when she was introduced in Malibu Rising and I have zero interest in tennis. So glad I read it, so far this was my favorite book by this author. Hope you give it a try!

Carries dad is from Argentina!
oooh thanks!
Got my tennis-loving boyfriend to read it and he finished before I did!
Too impatient to wait but do you recommend reading Malibu Rising before jumping into Carrie Soto?
No not needed. Like she said Cary was a minor character in Malibu Rising and maybe you will like her more if you read her story first! Lol!
@@preenak3496 thank you
