Today I'm making a New York Sour! With the addition of a red wine float, this was an early riff on the whiskey sour and it dates back to the late 1800s. Does it work? Yes. Is it delicious? Yes. Is it pretty to look at? Yes. Is it from New York? Nope (I'll explain). With properly floated red wine, the New York Sour maintains a beautiful separation right down to the last sip. This one is for both the wine lovers and the cocktail enthusiasts out there - we all win! Cheers!

Happy Friday!! 🥃🍋🍷
Looks yummy! (With Chicago’s high of 90 degrees today - in MID-MAY!?! - I think I need to scroll through your back catalog for a lower ABV refresher. But saving this one for the inevitable rainy day!)
What are your thoughts on the reverse dry shake? I have a tough time keeping the dry shake from exploding. And I can't taste any difference between the 2 (I'm a novice though).
Happy Saturday!!
You too
🍸😎👍 THANKS
Please write a book! You two have amazing aesthetics and I bet a book from y’all would look amazing on any bar or coffee table, plus be filled with amazing sips, tips, and recipes! Not to mention the history and stories of cocktails!
I’d 100% buy it… so far all the drinks I’ve made from Anders had been 👌
What a lovely piece of glassware you had! You two should to an AMA one day. Great video as always! Highlight of my Fridays!
I agree, love that glass and presentation 👌
Yes sir! The taste is abviously King, but king need a robe befitting to his stature. A nice glass isexactly that to a cocktail.
What's it all about if we're not having fun, right? Great episode as usual! I also love that your dad watches - so wholesome
I cannot stop watching your videos. Seriously. Everything you do is so satisfying to watch and you are such an inspiration! THANK YOU
This has quickly become one of my favorites. My wife and I had a date night at Jose Andres' BarMini the other week and had a New York Sour sorbet. They partially froze the cocktail with liquid nitrogen, folded it into a sorbet, then floated the red wine on top. It was 🤯
Love this cocktail. I was put off by the idea of wine mixing with a sour cocktail when I first heard about this. But after giving it a shot, I prefer it to a normal sour. The red wine gives a nice balance to the sweet/sour flavors of a normal whisky sour.
Yay! One of my favorite sour variants! I had my first one at the Raven & Rose in Portland, OR about 6 years ago and was absolutely floored by the awesomeness. Glad to see it here!
This has been my favorite drink for years. Thanks for covering it!
This is one of my favourite cocktails, and surprisingly versatile depending on the ingredients, you could try a port finished whiskey and really lean into the berry notes throughout the drink, or go whole hog and try a port float.
I made one recently with a stout float up top and it was DELICIOUS! kinda like a dark chocolate and lemon candy.
Started making these during the pandemic and it quickly became one of our faves. We use a stronger bourbon like Knob Creek or Wild Turkey 101. Love how simple it is to make and yet what a cool looking drink that makes a great impression with your guests!
Fantastic trying it this weekend
This is one of my favorite summery cocktails! Glad it made the channel. Its also a very impressive looking drink to make for friends which I love as well.
Agreed - looks good and tastes good. Cheers!
I made these as a treat for when my wife got home from work a ways back. She was late so I put them in the freezer to stay chilled. The wine ended up going just a bit slushy and we really loved it. 🤷🤷
Worth a try if it sounds fun to anyone, haha
That is a beautiful-looking cocktail! Well done on the perfect layers.
Thanks for the great video - I love the historical background, big reason I watch your channel instead of others - keep it up!
Looks fantastic! Definiteley gonna try it. Great video as always!
Thanks for introducing us to the NY Sour. Used blended scotch and California Cab. It was Great
Wine and a mixed drink. Best of both worlds. Great video Anders!! Have a lovely weekend! Hoping you are able to enjoy spring over there.
It's starting to warm up here - ready for the summery drinks! Cheers, Leda!
Thanks Anders. Really enjoying your channel from here in the UK. NY Sour had been one of my favourites for a while now. I tend to make the NY sour without egg white and the Whisky Sour with. For me it’s just become just two different ways of doing a sour.
Have never tried it up though. Looking forward to giving this a go.
This was the first cocktail I made. (Had some bourbon and wine from some chicken recipes.) Maybe a year ago? I had to use a protein shaker. Shortly after that I dived in to drink mixing and found this marvelous channel! The New York Sour is still my all time favorite! Great drink
Great! Especially the ad for the watches
Its Friday and new vid from señor Anders, perfect. cheers !! 🍸
Thank you Anders! I tried the New York Sour and absolutely loved it. This inspired me to try adding a red wine topper to a Rum Sour and Tequila Sour and they were both fantastic! The Tequila Sour especially... it was like Key Lime Pie with Meringue and a side of fresh berries.
Whenever I make this I use a cask strength whiskey, usually Maker's Mark. For any type of sour. Maple syrup & Lemon juice. I rarely use simple syrup. For the wine I use Black Box Malbec.
Maple syrup is awesome in sours, well played sir
As always great stuff. Some helpful tips, thanks. Salud/Cheers !
Thanks for this recipe and showing how the float is done. It's a beautiful looking cocktail, but more importantly its tastes amazing! The red wine really sets it apart from other sours.
Love this cocktail! Looks so pretty
Happy Friday indeed Anders and Az!
I have made new york sour in the same glassware before! Love the presentation ❤
the watch is beautiful.... the drink looks tasty!!! im sold!!!!
So excited to see a New York sour episode, one of my favs! Happy Friday the 13th!
I've been making this for a while now and I keep trying new combinations. One of my favorites was an amaretto sour with sweet wine from the local St. Julian winery :)
Happy World Cocktail Day!!! On my way home to craft up a few of my favorites. Will add this to the mix
Your videos are excellent Anders!! (And Oz). heck, even your watch ad was entertaining
Anders I love your channel and all the yummy beverages you make! I have made quite a few lately and tonight was the New York Sour!! I even got it layered this time! Keep the great content coming. I wish I could add a photo!!
Love this cocktail. We make ours with Wild Turkey 101 Rye and usually a Mark West pinot noir. Delicious.
Sounds like my kind of drink! Thanks for the video!
as always.. great video, anders! i had the privilege to visit ward eight 2 weeks ago while in chicago for a whopping 12 hours! jeremy took care of me and we talked about how much you’ve grown! well deserved and keep the videos/ cocktails coming!
My bar has a variation on the New York Sour that’s sweetened with Amaretto instead of syrup. It’s extremely popular.
Hey Anders, great video as always! You have been one of the main reasons I’ve wanted to start learning more about cocktails and start up my own home bar. Would you consider making a video on St. Germain and some unique cocktails you can make using it? Thanks!
Happy Friday!! Cheers to another amazing video 🥃🍷😍
Very pretty drink.
I will be trying this!
Great video as always.
Beautiful drink!
To the bar!! 😂😂 cheers!!
I’ll have to make one this weekend. Love your channel.
Hope you enjoy it - and enjoy the weekend!
I am in the carribean and missing my sours, so I made this with 12 Yr. Aged Rum, Homemade Banana Liqueur, Lime, Egg White and a slightly sweet Malbec I found down here with a sprinkle of nutmeg on top. Was amazing.
That sounds incredible. Cheers to you!
My favorite cocktail!
I always though that the idea of red wine in a whiskey sour sounded weird and a little off, so was afraid to try this. Boy, was I wrong... this was amazing! Thanks for highlighting this cocktail and encouraging me to try it! The flavor was so much richer, fruitier, rounder than a standard whiskey sour. My wife loved it too... said it reminded her of a sweet float sherbet punch, which I thought was strange at first but then could totally see. Cheers!
Thanks god! I was missing this drink on your channel! Thank you!
Looks nice for a "Saturday night sour" jaja. Thanks A&A!
Anders, I was watching you two years ago and commented when you had under 10k subscribers. Congrats on the progress, I’m back visiting your site again for some sips and tips.
That looks amazing! First cocktail I’m gonna make in my new house when I move. Cheers
Love it with some port wine on top, LBV suits my taste!
Great presentation man, I usually do this on the rocks, but I like your version better 😃👍🏻
Love the video! Not a big red wine drinker, but I have to give this a try. Love all the videos, I am biased to the younger vidoes, so fun, and silly. They are all great!
Love the return to classic cocktails w/ the new production vibes. Happy Friday, everyone.
Cheers, Mark! Enjoy the weekend!
saludos desde ecuador, gracias por todo siempre
I love wine and watches. So, great video!
oooooooooooo, Lawd! I can't wait to try this one!
My wife I love this drink! Looks great and tastes even better!
I would love to see an episode on drinks you don’t like! For example, I don’t like mezcal, and I’ve never had a drink where the mezcal felt balanced.
Great channel! Thanks for all the help!
New York Sours are great. Love the presentation. Love you guys. I like when Az gives things a taste. Different perspectives on drinks is always great because taste is subjective. Also…if I may…I have done construction work right around the corner from the bar you used to work at. I have shopped at the Mitsuwa that you shopped at for the plum wine episode and my mother in law is from Japan sooo…Kinda funny. Small world. Love the content. Keep ‘em coming.
I fell in love with whisky sour using red wine syrup (as more often I have some leftover open wine that needs to be used up than actual open bottle of wine), something like 40ml rye 30ml lemon 20ml 1:1 red wine syrup + egg white/aquafaba
Had one of these once and the bartender used a nice Ruby Port in it, though not a fan of aqua faba or egg white in my drink it was refreshing and tasty. And always it was great to see Az pop in.
I made one of these yesterday! The universe wants us all to have New York Sours apparently. It would be great to have an episode dedicated to cocktails with floats in the future.
I made one of these last night with redemption double high rye, lavender simple (less sweet) egg white and Rioja. It was a hit.
Wine cocktails are always interesting. You should make a wine cocktail video soon! (sangria, tinto de verano, etc.) Cheers!
Oooh that sounds good. In addition, champagne cocktails like the Classic Champagne Cocktail, French 75 and 77, Negroni Sbagliato, the Hugo, etc.
It's a lovely drink. I have only tried JF's (Truffles...) clarified version, but I think this weekend I'm gonna try them back to back. I see no problem with that, I love sours...
And yes, this is a wonderful glass you used!
One of my favorites, along with the fireman's sour, pisco sour, and margarita/tequila sour. :)
i always make my Whiskey Sours with a few dashes of bitters, the float of red wine to this cocktail adds so many more competing yet complex spicy flavors. Cheers
What a coincidence! I made my first ever New York Sour tonight, then noticed that you uploaded this video! Cool to compare them. :D What a cool drink.
Ok, I haven’t even watched this yet but I commented yesterday on your Artists Special episode that I’d love a New York sour episode. And wow, what service!!
Your timing was impeccable. This one’s for you, Charlotte! Cheers!
Looks delicious
At my bar we do a riff on a New York sour that we call a dresser drawer - it is basically an upside down New York sour but instead of wine we use chambord. It’s delicious!
This one is great. Whenever I've got a bottle of red opened, I make one of these
True story. I'm staying with a friend who loves red wine and wiskey sours and had never heard of a New York sour so of couse I had to make one for him. Your method and mine were the same, even down to the aquafaba.
Favorite channel ever! Cheers!
Thanks so much! Cheers to you!
I am absolutely trying this later tonight.
Hey happy Friday! 😀
Ya this is one of my favourite cocktails. I don’t use egg white in mine like I would with a standard sour.
And like all whiskey cocktails, rye is the right choice😁
Note for the original grain site. It tries to add in a free little bottle opener to your cart that disables your 30% discount.
If you remove it, it will re-add it to the cart after a second or two. You have to remove that from cart and quickly hit checkout before it re-adds so you can actually get the 30%.
Hey Anders, Love your videos. Althought I thought that Carmenere is a rediscovered Chilean wine variety today that came from France and disappeared a long, long time ago.
Love it. Iv tried it many ways, who hasn't right. My favorite is laphroaig, egg white, simple , villa Maria merlot . I can't get the float without egg white.
Thanks guys, adding yet another to my list to make!😆🙏
Enjoy it! Cheers!
🤙 Happy Aloha Friday to you both!!
Love bourbon. Love red wine. Gonna love making & drinking this.
Perfect for the weekend 🥃 🍷
I had a couple come to my bar a couple months back because somebody told them I made a great New York sour. Unbeknownst to me, my partner that night thought he made a pretty decent New York sour too so it became a bit of a friendly contest to see who made a better one. I served the lady & he made one for the gentleman. When I saw him pull the rocks glass I thought back to your video & pulled out a chilled coupe & did your spoon trick. I’d been meaning to come here & let you know that thanks to your video I won that little competition & got a pretty nice tip to with it at the end of the night. So thanks Anders! I owe you one!
I like this kind of cocktails where you can use whatever you want and it will taste delicious. So you don’t need to be there like scientist to make one, just you, booze and fun!
I was just going to try it at home but war starts first… hope I will be able to come back home and my stuff will be there.
Cheers!
Great video, as usual! I'd love to see one on my favorite cocktail: The Bijou!
Sounds foreign. Try Soju. It's low abv & it's really good. Like really really really good. I get creamy, buttery, peppery primarily.
@@joewas2225 I've tried Soju, it's a good spirit. A Bijou is a cocktail, not a spirit. It's French for jewel. Ingredients are gin, green chartreuse, and sweet vermouth.
I was surprised how good New York Sours are the first time I made one. It's definitely one of those cocktails where the sum total is greater than the individual parts.
Had to pause the video for
15 minutes to look at watches. I came back though. Great video. I really want to try this. I drink whiskey and wine.
This is how I got into red wine. Love this drink!
Super delicious
Fella... this is an amazing crowd pleaser. I tried it with a Rittenhouse Rye as an alternative which is much lighter and doesn't bring out the citrus as well as the Burbon. Everyone has to try this out
I love a mellow corn new York sour!
Such an attractive cocktail. I just haven't found a wine of any color that I like.
Happy FRYday Anders!! Thought for certain you were going to put out a Friday the 13th themed drink.🍹
Oh yea that is a damn pretty drink and delicious also
I definitely need to make it. I love all kind of sours cocktails but somehow did give this one a shot
Hope you love it! 🥃🍋 🍷
@@AndersErickson just found out that today is a World Cocktail Day. So cheers to that🎉
what?! Happy World Cocktail Day!
