Even the best speakers can't convey the absolute *force* that an organ like this can push. Until you're in the presence of someone playing one of these things in person, you really don't understand the sheer magnitude of musical power that these things can express. In the right hands, they're absolutely stupefying. I'd love to hear this song played on a big organ like this someday. The person in the video plays it quite well.
You are so right. For those who have not experienced a pipe organ live and preferably in a good acoustical space, do yourself a favor and find a concert. Fun fact: the knobs technical name is "stop". The famous phrase "pulling all the stops" (meaning "do something with maximum effort or ability") is believed to come exactly from the organ instrument, probably because of how sick it sounds. Also, "pulling all the stops" is an old idiom, just imagine people from the fourth century BC hearing something like this. It stuns US, TODAY, I like to imagine how they would've felt hearing it!
It goes from a whimsical almost ethereal tune into an angry almost cacophonous nearly overwhelming symphonic peice then falls back to a haunting rendition of the original melody. In my opinion it almost perfectly represents grief or loss you are happy in an almost whimsical state then something happens that corrupts your view of the world you are in grief this explosion and Rollercoaster of emotions swirling around like a storm. Then finally you accept what has happened and things calm down and while you have healed there is still the scar that will never fade and therefore it remains in some way still having changed the way things are permanently
Please tell me the church lets you play this stuff on Halloween night! I can just imagine how many kids you'd scare if this started up as they passed by!
Lmao it's creepy enough... literally if I was in church service and this instrument started playing I'd be a little paranoid. It's a very old, rustic, medieval sound... very "aged" and "dark" I like it though. It's just a tad creepy.

People here are marveling at how he plays this without a tentacle beard, and I get that. It’s really impressive. But here’s the REAL question... How did they put the organ in the Flying Dutchman? Pre installed? Came with the ship?
Fun fact: David Bowie was originally known as Davy Jones but had to switch stage names in the 60’s because Davy Jones was the name of The Monkees’ lead singer
My favorite part about this particular piece is that you can feel the stages of Grief in the song, like at the beginning it's slow, Denial and then you get the middle part which sounds furious, you can feel Davy Jones's anger at Calypso's betrayal, near the end I can feel a bit of Bargaining, and then the last part is Depression and Acceptance. It's just so beautifully played and being played on an organ like this just makes it feel alive. You can feel the emotions Davy Jones has had to face for a long time. He was a good man who became evil, and like Nicolas Cage said in National Treasure, there is a debt that all men pay, and Jones paid it. Shame we won't know what happens after Dead men tell no tales thanks to Disney.
Imagine: You are walking home on a stormy night, it’s cold and very wet, thunder loud and relentless with consistent lightning strikes. You walk by the abandoned church and hear this 1:45
What i love about this song is the emotion behind it, the angelic tones of the first part represents Davy's heart founding love, in the second part, everything darkens and hope goes away, and the powerful tones represent his sadness turned into anger

I really like Davy Jones's theme it's one of my all time favorites.... My friend is a church organist and I'm an old sailor. I like to sit and listen to him practice in church, and one time we talked about playing Davy Jones's theme. But then as he got ready to try and play it I saw all the model ships hanging in church. Models of real ships that have been hung there to bless the sailors and their ships.... So I said to him that maybe we shouldn't you know because of the ships hanging there. Some think this is childish when I tell this but you see, you might be an unbeliever when your ship leaves port but I promise you that you will be a believer when that ship returns you to port. Even the heartiest of unbelievers will fall to their knee when the waves and winds start to churn the ship so violently that the cargo, even though strapped down tight, will lift from the deck and then slam back in to it making the ship shudder and sound like the bells of hell are tolling for you.
@@JimmyMorrison101 Because you should not tempt fate. It's like this. You may not be a believer when you leave port but you sure are one when you get back to port. I've seen strong men on their knees crying when the wind and the waves rock the ship, and although strapped down tight, the waves makes the cargo lift from the deck and then slam right back down in to it. Making the whole ship toll like the bells of hell itself. On the ocean the ship is your whole world and without it you're dead and the oceans are vast, mean and angry. And sometimes, late at night you might see her, shimmering green, in the far distance sailing by a few feet over the oceans surface... Don't tempt fate my friend.
It's shit like this that convinces me that that music isn't dead, the modern Beethovens and Mozarts aren't found on the radio, they're in the background of movies and videogames. Still creating those songs that speak with emotions instead of words, forever imprinting moments into your soul.
Greatly said. By the way, I also tried to play this theme, but in my country there are no organs and I played it on my piano. I had some success on it... but hell, this is far better. I think I need to try more of Hans Zimmer's( soundtrack composer of PotC movies) tracks. They are as good as classical ones.
@@colebruen2082 Of cource! (For real though this organ (and others like it) have a mechanical system, that if you so desire, you can play the upper keyboards notes just like the bottom's. To give it more power in a sense)
That's a manual to manual coupler. In this case, I think it's choir to great (or choir to swell... or great to swell... not sure what the manuals are named in this organ)
Sitting at that little keyboard, pressing keys and pulling levers, having every aspect of the organ under control from that one place, must feel like driving a spaceship.
As an organist, yes. But I’ve also done it on Good Friday for postlude, it’s the darkest day of the liturgical year so it goes really well with it. Then the Widor toccata on Easter for a complete contrast
The composer of this piece absolutely nailed the sound that was needed for Davy Jones. It's like a perfect blend of fury and heartbrokenness, I haven't found anything like it.
TheExplodingChipmunk That's because most church music involves the congregation singing along. If the organ played to its full potential it would drown out the congregation. Hymns are meant as prayers. The organ is just there to key melody for the congregation. At my church we usually open her up some after the last hymn as everyone is getting up to leave though haha.
Angry Skeleton Corn Man 782746 actually. this organ isn't really that big it only has to keyboards (or manuals as there called in organs) while it could have 3 or 5 and the biggest ones have 7! and the action on this organ is mechanical. so it is limited to a certain size. but the sounds that even small organs make are still large.
The one time I cried from live music, was hearing a pipe organ at a church. Such a beautiful , emotionally moving instrument. I wish I could hear this in person .
when he stops to pull all the handles I was sitting here like "wow, he's really pulling out all the stops." and like a strike of lightning It clicked "wait... wait, wait, wait..." i googled the origin of the phrase and turns out I accidentally found the meaning right here. Thanks mate, loved the music and the thundering revelation!
Cool but considering that someone already noticed the line ''pulling out all the stops'' 3 months before you it would seem as if you got the idea from reading their comment
Wow Guess what, I read your comment and thought "Hm never heard that" then I began to think. Wait theres a similar phrase in my language (german). I googled it and well... now I know where that came from and that its the german version of "pulling out all the stops" I learned something new today.
This is an amazing cover. Normally I’d criticize the rushing at around 1:46, but in this case, I think it gives the piece a sense of frantic urgency that matches Davy Jones’ emotional state while he plays the piece in the movie. Well done!
If you have never stood in a room with a organ while its played you need to at least once… changes your view on the instrument. Feeling the music/vibration hit you is something else. Would love to hear this song/arrangement live!
@@imatorkid859I was fortunate enough to attend a wedding were they had a full size organ in the church. They played all the formal wedding music on it. I get why they KEPT it - it's huge and has an unique sound so that people get a sense of witnessing something other-worldly that they won't hear other places, but how and who on earth managed to get the idea in the first place?
For hundreds of years it was the only way to fill large spaces with sound. This was true up until the Great Depression, and in fact the largest organ in the world was built to fill the largest enclosed space in the world at the time, Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

instruments like this incredible. Nothing else can fill a room like this, nothing else compares. That a person is in control and not some unearthly thing is almost incomprehensible. Cathedrals are decadent creations of a time where the most important thing in a society was religion. That single mindedness of an entire nation is the only thing that could have created such an opulent and intense sound. Believe in God or not, you cannot deny the awe it inspires. That organ shook both the room and the minds of those who could hear it.

Then finally you accept what has happened and things calm down and while you have healed there is still the scar that will never fade and therefore it remains in some way still having changed the way things are permanently

_Your innocence, gone._
_Your heart and love, broken._

_What if the Flying Dutchman appears again?_

I've seen strong men on their knees crying when the wind and the waves rock the ship,
and although strapped down tight, the waves makes the cargo lift from the deck and then slam right back down in to it.
