HJ got COVID a few days before the performance I attended, so I didn't get to see him in this. 😭
At least now I know what it would've been like with him as Harold Hill. Thanks for uploading the video!
That said, understudy Max Clayton was absolutely marvelous. He reminds me a lot of Seth MacFarlane, and the audience gave the cast a well-deserved standing ovation that night. 👍😊

I saw the show twice!!! The first was actually with Max during the week Hugh had COVID after the Tonys. He blew my mind!!! Then I went back again in January before it closed and I saw Hugh. Both brought different takes on the role. Both fantastic and amazing chemistry with Sutton Foster!!!

I saw this show in August. I have seen many shows over the years, but I have never seen a show where the two main characters, Jackman and Foster common have such amazing chemistry. This may be best show I’ve ever seen. It was obviously entire cast was having a great time.

They were having their little jokes that don’t belong in the shows. Thats where you may have seen ‘chemistry.’
We saw no chemistry. Foster was miscast. She did not do a good job as Marian. We were disappointed. We paid a lot of money for up close tickets.
My family knows every line of the show as we have seen the excellent movie dozens of times. And this show did not succeed or come close.

The only chemistry you saw was the affair they were having behind the backs of their perspective spouses behind the scenes. 🙄

I saw this show about a year ago, it was fantastic. I thought that Hugh Jackman was a PHENOMENAL actor and a good singer, but Sutton Foster was the best part of that entire production. She was miscast, but she committed to the role and made the best of a role that didn't play to her strengths. There was a period in the scene by the footbridge right before Till There Was You when Harold Hill cracked a joke, the whole audience roared with laughter, then Hugh started to crack. He had to walk away from Sutton for a second. They both returned to character, and continued on with the show. All of this is to say, I enjoyed the show tremendously. Everybody did a fantastic job! It should also be noted that I saw Max Clayton go on for Shuler Hensley as Marcellus Washburn, he did an amazing job, and thank you to all understudies and standbys!!

funny he cracked the night I saw it too, but we had the understudy for Sutton ( who we came to New York to see). he was trying to get the understudy to crack and she did. Hilarious

@@EddTaylorandBlake That's amazing! It was my first Broadway show ever, and it was so special to me because I live in Alaska, and Broadway is so inaccessible to me. I've heard of a lot of reports from people who also saw the show, and a lot of them have said that Jackman fully cracked, while Sutton just stood there smiling. I love Sutton to the moon and back, I think she's such a talented performer.

Was the first Broadway Show I ever attended. Sutton was out due to Covid, but her understudy was exceptional! Pretty sure Hugh Jackman got COVID a few days after, tho.

We thought this show was pretty bad. My family knows every line by heart. Sutton was miscast. And we didn’t appreciate Jackman breaking character with his (dumb) little jokes.

    • @lucindaarmour7422
      @lucindaarmour7422 Рік тому

I think Jackman is a really charismatic actor and very good natured man but his voice seems damaged. He has lost his vocal strength - especially the strength he had when he first did Oklahoma. It would have driven me insane if he broke character. It's not 'an evening with...' it's The Music Man. And yes Sutton is miscast. In fact if you were to ever flip the show and cast the lead as female she would be perfect casting!

I'm thankful for these too! What day was this from? Hugh looks huge lol I heard on a talk show day he had to keep getting resized costumes since he was bulking up for Wolverine.

I'm not sure I agree with their set decisions here. Drop loos cheap although I'm sure it's not. And was the Wells Fargo wagon really a stage coach and not a wagon by the early 1900s ? The other scenes they had spent more on.

A pale reflection of original in all regards. These actors are play acting. In film Preston and Jones are living in the moment.

Counterpoint. Preston and Jones are long dead and Hugh Jackman was bringing new interest to the musical that inspired his career. He has said in interviews that the original inspired him to try out for his high school drama club and the rest was history. Then a new generation go back and watch the original.

Why are no new musicals being written? The Music Man's score from 1957 has aged so badly. Lerner & Loewe's work hasn't (such as Camelot and My Fair Lady), but this has. So little can be done with the blocking and choreography because of it, and it moves so very slowly. Even when the choreography speeds up, it still feels horribly slow, and the music is to blame.
