1:50 working on offbalancing the opponents legs
3:54 never let your opponent get high volume combos off
4:57 keep ellbows extremly high (to make them throw middle kicks and catch their kicks to practice)
6;08 throw a move over and over (to create openings/fake them out)
    7:18 adopt a different style
8:26 imagine you are handicapped (arm or leg is injured/hurt from kicks)
Those are great tips Gabriel thank you!! Will try to remember them

The second point about letting your opponent get combos off really resonates with me. I'm about 18 months into training MT and realized I was treating every sparring session like a 1 for 1 drill. I'm just seeing this video today, but for the last few weeks I was really focusing on timing disruption and countering after 1-2 strikes, and it's been transformational.
Off-balancing their legs is also very effective, it's amazing how little force it takes to work if you get the timing right, and can catch them during a weight shift to the lead leg, or using a knee to the inside of their thigh in an "up and out motion" during a tight clinch.

One thing I learned when I set out to start my own school is at some point , somebody made it up. We take for granted that what we were taught by our instructors was carefully designed and approved by some expert committee . But really , somebody just said "This should work, let's try it." So I started coming up with my own drills . Because we all know repetition is key . You need to get to the point where you have done that thing thousands and thousands of time. So on your own , take principles like Gabe is describing and come up with your own set , flowing drills that put you in those positions over and over again . Its best if they are "circular " in that they start and end at the same point and repeat. Most reading this already know what I mean and do them , but maybe haven't tried making their own.

Yes repetition is king. If you want to throw a perfect liverhook etc throw it over and over on the bag. Also I heard multiple times throwing double hooks is good.

These are all really, really good tips. Any viewers who watch this need to understand it takes hundreds and thousands of hours of free sparring at least 50 to 75 percent contact to develop the knowledge and instinct to apply these skills, but you have given viewers a huge leap in "Skill Gap" with these tips.

I was surprised to see you Gabe mention the inverted kick because often I wondered how often this is used in real fights. It's nearly one of my go tos and often use it in the clinch to throw people off.
At my age, I don't plan to compete hence I use it regularly in sparring

  • @WadeSmith-oe5xd

4:30 Excellent tip. This is similar to Seisan Kata bunkai of perhaps even jamming and catching your opponent's arm and dragging them into your punches, knees, or kicks. Don't let them "combo off". You be the one to disrupt the opponent and then combo off first. Tie opponent up briefly and drag them into your strikes. We call this an "Interrupt" followed by "Combined Submission/Striking Combos".
5:00 Again Excellent. You are baiting the opponent into using an attack you KNOW you can stop and trap. This is what I call "Trap Boxing" or 'Trap Kicking" techniques, which I am very good at. This is definitely Master/GM level technique, which I was also taught by mid-level black belts and Grand Masters in Isshinryu Okinawan Karate. Good stuff. From this position, you can then sweep the other leg simultaneous with a punch or palm heel to the sternum. You can then apply a front ankle lock variant or a heel hook if it's still available. This then sets up the reverse figure 4/half-crab or potentially even the Accolades, which hurts like hell.
6:15 perfect! Awesome. the Front Snap kick is to Muay Thai and MMA what the Jab is to boxing. I am glad you made these observations. It allows you to find and control range and decide how your opponent is going to fight. if your front kick can land, then you can step in and "Jab, cross," or step through and rear thrust kick which is my bread and butter, especially if I've managed to trap one of my opponent's wrists somehow. It also obviously depends on what the opponent is doing too though.

Yeah, you're a REAL freaking mid-level to Master level black belt. I get so sick of other people making videos who are supposedly mid-level black belts and dont' know what they are talking about. Thank God for your videos. I learned something here and I got confirmation on the skills I already had too.
7:30 This is good stuff too. I used to do that in Isshinryu Karate sparring sessions. I fought each opponent with a different core style depending on their strengths and weaknesses. Sometimes i changed styles just to be different or play with the opponents head. Sometimes I fought southpaw, sometimes orthodox. Sometimes I switched for no reason other than to confuse the opponent. Against less skilled opponents, sometimes i handicapped myself to see if I can win without my best weapons, so I'd be like "Okay, I'm going to try to win without my thrust kick this time." lol.
When i was testing for black belt, I was so much better than the other students that Sensei sometimes made me fight 1vs2 handicaps, or else disarm opponents who had 1 or 2 escrima sticks, or disarm another brown belt who had an okinawan bo.
Sometimes in sparring, sensei would call out a technique and forbid me from using that strike or that arm or leg in the fight. That is real mid-level and master level black belt training.
Good job and thank you, Gabriel.

Hey Gabriel, love these tips, but it would have been more helpful if you had video clips or a sparring partner to demonstrate some of your tips, like grabbing the opponent's kick and kicking the other leg, or don't let a combo go more than 2 hits.
Would love to see a video where you show us these tips instead of just explaining it.

Stil think that it's the other way around. it's you that decide if your sparring partner is going to learn something. Focus on how you can spar in such a way that your partner wants and can try new things. Find it super funny that in every gym I went 99% of combinations never where applied in sparring ever. It almost always result into the same 'you hit me and I hit you' and the one that get hurt loses :) You don't have to believe me, just try it. Teach any class and at the end of the class let them spar. I can predict not a single one will do any combination that was just thought in class :P

That's why you must work and let others work when you're just sparring or practicing. The same applies to other arts as well, for instance, Jiu-jitsu. If everyone had just practiced what they wanted on me when I first learned BJJ, I wouldn't have learned a thing, but people knew to let me work in between what they were trying to practice and let me learn and have fun. Same with boxing and kickboxing when I started those.

    Hi Gabriel,
How good is your Combat Judo and Japanese small circle jiu jitsu? How strong is your Front Thrust/Push kick?
Are you good enough to attempt a 1vs2 second Dan Okinawan black belts?
I can teach you a few techniques and strategies to attempt this exhibition match. I've won it two or three times when I was 20 years old.
You catch the smaller opponent in a wrist lock or side arm control and keep his body between you and the other opponent. Crank and kick the guy until he either taps or shouts "i quit". Then it's 1vs1 against the other guy.
Dana White, or some other promoter, would soil his pants if he saw you do this.
You might be able to pull this off against two unranked pros. You're smaller than I was 23 years ago, but you're probably slightly faster, so you might be able to do it.
I'm type 2 diabetic and too sick to fight anymore, so I can't demonstrate this full power anymore.

I watched a local muay thai fight that wasn't official or sanctioned and a guy passed out from a plum. Is that a thing? Or is it one of those only happened because it was two novices freezing up and doing things that would never come up when two mildly competent fighters face off?
I even saw a two people keep trying to throw power roundhouses and have them miss because they were so close that the kick would hit BEHIND their opponent and the thigh would harmlessly thump their opponent. Bruh, coaches were screaming. But both fighters just kept trying to throw the kitchen sink in their harmless power roundhouse kick and you could see the frustration in the coaches eyes lol.

I normally have an orthodox stance. Should I practice using an southpaw stance during sparring?

    • @WadeSmith-oe5xd
      @WadeSmith-oe5xd 4 місяці тому

Yes. Some people suck at fighting against Southpaws. Sometimes just changing your stance will make you a better fighter. I fight "switch" and change styles regularly when sparring another high level fighter.
I was taught in Isshinryu karate to fight with the strong hand forward. However, I don't always do that. I like my right rear foot to be my Thrust kick because its' my best forward weapon. When I do "Switch" I thrust kick and set down in front if the opponent has been knocked senseless or backwards by the hit. A good full power thrust kick leaves a bruise that takes about 2 weeks to heal up, so understand that during sparring and understand your dojo's contact rules before you try this technique.
