double the price you get double the fun, polychromos is the best pencil for details and botanical drawing, also lightfast, not the best for portraits compares to wax based pencils. I am not worthy of them but their price was not that high to have the total 120 pencils less than 200$ . I would love to see you play with their watercolor pencils.
It's a bit funny how your cutting corners still makes for an amazing video, one way better than any of my own videos. :) Cutting corners or not, still loved it! Hope you enjoy your Comic Con time and resting. Looking forward to your return.
I’m so glad you did this video because I have the 36 tin of polychromous and haven’t used them for anything but swatching. Seeing them in action and what they can do (especially in professional hands) inspires me to actually put them through their paces at some point. Great video and beautiful piece!
In my experience it only needs one starting point to get them out and use. A small picture, postcard size the best. Just your favorite subject and it goes by itself after that. Nothing very complicated at first. Comfort art if you will. Every art supply is wasted when not used.
@@katalinelo8011 I completely agree. I would get anxiety before creating something and couldn’t understand why I was getting like that. Then one day I picked them up and just went for it because I was tired of my expensive pencils just being decoration. I started and it just took on a life of its own after that.😀
Hey ADC, have you ever thought about doing a “Draw my life” video? I heard in a livestream that you used to do street fighting, I think? That’s so cool and would love to know more about your life if you would be comfortable with sharing! Loved the video :)
The close ups of when you are drawing and coloring are so awesome! I love that because it shows how precise and nuanced the process is, with layering and soft blending. It's incredible to watch.
The thing i love about these videos is they give a good showcase of both products. If you can only afford the cheaper, its really helpful to be able to see the comparison so you know what level of art is still achievable. When using cheaper art supplies, its really helpful to know their limitations.
Tbh - I was supriced how well the cheap ones looked and survived. Thank you for making this! (Now I don't have to feel bad for buying cheaper set for a child. Or spending the double for a hobbyist.)
I’ve had the whole Polychromos range for a few years now and can say they’re worth it. Waterproof for mixed media, and they blend like a dream. I’ve only had to replace my most used colors once in 3 years’ solid use. If a person can afford them, I highly recommend this brand. They work well with my Prismacolor and Derwent pencils too!
Loved this comparison, big fan of Faber Castell so it was nice to see two tiers of their art supplies and have them pitted against each other. Also, awesome artwork, so excited for the new Thor movie.
I used Faber-Castell at school as well, and will always have a special place in my heart for the cheap (well priced) set. But if you’re looking to take your art to the next level then quality supplies always make things easier. You’re not fighting with your tools in any way, they just work and you can focus solely on honing your skills.
I know a lot of people enjoy polychromos but sadly they aren't my thing. I like the wax based ones more since they tend to just lay down brighter over markers. And I actually really like the graininess of them. There's something about that texture that just is incredibly appealing to me.
I think it depends on your style. I love multiple light layers building up drawings that glow so I love polychromos. But that doesn't mean they are the best choice for everyone. Finding what works for you is one of the funnest things about art.
All colored pencils are both oil and wax. Polychromos are substantially softer than some pencils that people call "wax based," which is a term that's gained use with the rise in popularity of adult coloring. It's not a term that's used in professional art. But in the end it just comes down to what works best for you.
As a beginner well just getting back to basics of art, I love this series. It tells me which are worth investing in or which are total garbage. I wish I had these tips back in art school when I needed high quality supplies on a budget and all the syllabus gave were generic suggestions.
High-quality colored pencils also made a big difference for me, as someone with tendonitis-- polychromos go on easier, therefore take less pressure, therefore less pain for my poor thumb/wrist. Plus, as you said, it's a waaay nicer experience. No more Crayola for me!
I have the fc from the expensive side was given to me as a gift I've had them for 11 years and still holding strong!!! I looove them they are so smooth and glide so nicely on paper!!!! Love how both sides look but prefer the expensive xx

I managed to snag a Faber Castell Polychromos set for half off. I love these pencils a lot. Well worth the cost. Best part, you can get single pencils if you run out Excellent video!
I recently bought new polychromos pencils because some of my old ones (from 1988), were getting too short even for pencil extenders. OMG the difference! It’s like I’d been using cheap school pencils for years. The new ones are so much creamier and bolder in colour. I’m off to the art shop today for a couple more colours I use regularly that weren’t in the set.
I have always thougt that pencils were the worst art material ever. Then I tried polychromos, and OMG !!! They are so nice !! I love love love. I then try some luminance and dervent lightfast, but I don't know...too soft for me I gess, and so much more expensive, but some unique and lovely muted colors.
Hy there, I really loved today’s comparison and especially your drawing. I have had the opportunity to use both of Faber Castell , the student grade and the higher grade which are called Polychromos. For me the Polychromos are the best, you’ve tried them so you know how they lay down. But on top of the this, these coloured pencils have a great balanced core which make them less prone to breakage. Hope you have a great weekend in London and that your fans respect your personal bubble !

I’ve used both in the past, also in combination for the Kiba, and I definitely prefer the polychromos. I think the skill ceiling is way higher with the polychromos than the classic colour. I would be interested to see just how well they work in combination and what the limitations are there 🤔? Anyway great video 👍 have fun at comic con
Usually I go for the cheap side, but this time I think I'll go for the expensive side because the colors are much softer it looks much greater. And you look like you're excited for the new Thor love and thunder movie coming out. Because if you weren't you weren't just drawn The Mighty Thor.
I love both sides. Faber-Castelle is just extreamly supirior then most and at any price. I would love a tutorial on how you render your metales. You do it so diffrent from what we learned in fashion school.
So fun fact, the more expensive Faber Castell are oil based...so you can actually use your alcohol markers to break down the oils and blend them, also helps when you think you've hit max opacity, you can sneak another layer or 2 in after you blend them with the marker (just make sure the marker is thoroughly dry first, or you will get pilling or tearing.)
You're coming to London baby..... I love the effect the cheap pencils have created but overall you might as well spend the extra and get the same effect and some. Epic drawing and finished piece as always..
I think the Artist has more to do with the success of an Art supply than the quality of an Art supply. I believe if your a good enough Artist you can make even the worst supply will bend to your will or expertise! The ease of quality supplies give you an easier time when working with quality supplies. Fighting against cheap supplies is exhausting, and counterproductive! It is the main reason people give up on a medium it is to hard because they made it so hard by going with cheap supplies! Good luck at the CON! I am sure you will be greeted with warmth and joy!
Thank you for these comparison videos! They are great! One thing I would like to mention is when you said they are like two different products, they sort of are. The Classics (red box) are wax based and are considered student grade, while the Polychromos are oil based and are more of an artist grade. My collection has a lot of different sets, and I will mix wax based and oil based in the same picture because they do each have their strengths. 😊
i own the polychromos and prismacolor aswell as caran dache luminance.. Must say i can't pick between any of them, all work great... The cheaper side is just less fun to work with
The red line ones always gave me and my lefty - hand - cramp- tendencies a hard time as a school kid ^^'. They sure are a good choice and one of the more top notch school/office, but if you'd ask me, I'd probably go for the intermediate Goldfarber line - and that even though I also own a fairly big set of Polychromos. The Goldfarber ones are also quite soft, if not a bit softer and their 48 range has matches in the Polychromos, so one could find out which colour they use most often and upgrade when one runs out of one colour or another ;)
As always your drawing turned out amazing. I do love your cheap vs expensive series, watching you draw and hearing what you are experiencing with the materials you are using and your ideas and opinion is very helpful. Thank you
Hi Anthony, another great review, I have a set of these polychromos and I am really happy with them. Great pencil for the price. Thanks for sharing, hope you have a great few weeks off. Jim
So glad to see this video. You don't see a lot of comic style art done in colored pencil, so I really enjoyed watching you work. I love my Polychromos, but they definitely are expensive. I recently picked up a budget set of pencils on Amazon, though, that are almost comparable to the Polychromos. The brand is Deli and I got 72 for a little over $30. They're just slightly less opaque, but only maybe 80%. And they don't have any light fastness information, so I wouldn't use them for something I was going to display or sell. But if you (or anyone watching) want a cheap set of pencils that are very similar I can't recommend them enough. I plan on replacing the colors I use up with Polychromos of the same color, but they're a nice way to get a larger assortment of colors while I figure out how to use them and what colors I prefer.
I’m more of a fan of the cheap side, spastically within the skin tones used, but I do like the texture and even though they are priced under a cheaper tag they can still be within a professional field, as a person who used Pencils Rarely I’d Much rather not Pay to much for something I’m very.. unfamiliar with It’s great to see the artwork I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day, or have a good night, or wake up it’s time for school, or good morning
They both looks amazing! I love it 😍 It'll be very interesting to combine them in one work. For example, cheap pencils with their soft texture use for fabric, and expensive with their smooth texture use for metal.
Great video as always. Have you considered trying the Crayola signature color pencils? They're probably one of the cheapest soft core pencils I've found.
Honestly, either side looks good on it's own. Obviously the expensive ones have a better depth of color, but a beginner can get along for quite a while on the cheap set. I didn't like the skin on the cheap side though....oo pink for my liking.
Man now show me a Drawing Video in wich u use your Alcohol Markers with the Polychromos at their fullest please! Your Art is so special and What u get out of the cheap pencils is incredible.
Great video ADCArtAttack! The idea of taking Faber Castell cheap vs Faber Castell was a wonderful choice as it made for an awesome & informative video. I hope you consider doing more videos like this using the cheap & expensive versions of a product made by the same company. I liked the cheap version because of the gritty nature of how the colors turned out. However, I could see times where the rich & boldness of the expensive version would be better. I honestly think both are worth it based of the users goals. 💜😊🔥
I totally agree with you, I bought the cheap Faber-Castell but had some problems, so I chose another cheaper pencils which worked fine, then I upgraded to the expensive Faber-Castell and I gotta say they are great but still expensive 🙂🙃
YESS I was waiting for this (haven’t watched any of it yet) but I watched you draw this on stream (thatwebdev was my name). So I know this will be awesome
Here's what I think about these pencils. If you truly believe art is your calling then go for the polychromos but go for 12 set or 24 set first, you never know if wax pencil is suited for you more than the oil base. But if you only doing it for fun or buying for kids, than the cheap one is fine, in fact you can also get some mid, decent markers to get a great base coverage first and then layer on the pencil afterwards. That's what I did. This way you don't have to spend too much on art supplies while still get great results.
Adc should , One million percent receive 1 of the 2 paintings from ten hundred!!! But it would be even way better for some reason to magically get both of them I’m the mail!!

I NEED these pictures in my life.
I don't know which side I like better visually. I do like the brighter blue on the expensive side, though.
YOU'RE PAWSOME.
Love that vibrancy of the polychromos.
Wow I’m really early! I’m a really big fan of urs and ur art tips and suggestions for art supplies helps me out a lot! Thank you!!
Thank God because I just bought that expensive set last week.
I’m more of a fan of the cheap side, spastically within the skin tones used, but I do like the texture and even though they are priced under a cheaper tag they can still be within a professional field, as a person who used Pencils Rarely I’d Much rather not Pay to much for something I’m very.. unfamiliar with
It’s great to see the artwork I hope you all have a wonderful rest of your day, or have a good night, or wake up it’s time for school, or good morning
I think, both are worth the money. The cheap ones for beginners and the others for experienced artists.
LESSSGOO ANOTHER NO GLASSES LOOK YEEEEE AND AMAZING VID 💖💖ur vids rlly make my day , tysm for uploading and keep doing ur best always 😊
They both looks amazing! I love it 😍
It'll be very interesting to combine them in one work. For example, cheap pencils with their soft texture use for fabric, and expensive with their smooth texture use for metal.
So glad to have you back ❤️
Great video as always.
Neat to see someone do a side by side on these ones!
Using one of my fav papers, Hahnemuhle Nostalgie.
so happy to see you back
Man now show me a Drawing Video in wich u use your Alcohol Markers with the Polychromos at their fullest please! Your Art is so special and What u get out of the cheap pencils is incredible.
to any up in coming artist cheap side is probably the best beginner friendly supplies out there
I absolutely adore this video so much and I glad this was very great.
Thank you 😊
I wished you had used arteza or mark art compared to the polys but I enjoyed the video very much.
Yup, the money is definitely worth spending! It looks like two different resolutions...
I knew $60 would be more enjoyable to work with :) I glad you liked them both
This is an awesome drawing. I think you should draw a character from the Orville.
This way you don't have to spend too much on art supplies while still get great results.
i was so happy when ADCArtAttack hearted my comment and i have been subscribed for 1 or 2 maybe 3 years
Love both sides but I think I like the expensive side a little bit more! I'll definitely have to try out some of these pencils sometime.
Happy to see you back...
that cheep side dont look cheap thats real skill my guy
I would like to the a test on the lightfastness of these and other pencils. Also on markers!
Adc should , One million percent receive 1 of the 2 paintings from ten hundred!!! But it would be even way better for some reason to magically get both of them I’m the mail!!
I like both results, but theres another faber castell Pencil with merge both. The super soft line
maybe could be a nice try
