If you're willing to basically double the sprite (and memory) cost, you can use up to 6 distinct colors per sprite, on the assumption that each region will overlay 2 sprites to composite the character graphic. Tricks like this were used (in more limited ways) to create Megaman's iconic sprite (his face is a different color palette / sprite from the rest), the white eyes in US SMB2, or the different whip strikes in Castlevania.

With this wave of remakes we're seeing of games like Crash or Spyro, I'd really like to see them do a remake of the Gwimbly games. They weren't perfect, but they were so much fun to play as a kid.

Honestly hot take i think gwimbly the creamed corn factory for the cdi was the best gwimbly game.
i think my favorite installation in the franchise was Gwimbly adventure..even if people hated it,, i thought the mocaping and janky 3d was so so cute!
