So here is a sound test for all 4 plates. This took quite a while and I made sure to do them all in one swoop so nothing changes from a mic placement or environmental standpoint. You will notice that the plate foam test all sound VERY similar, well, that's because they do. haha. The ones without foam will give you a better idea of the difference in sound between the plates. As always, take the sound test with a grain of salt, and use it to compare sound changes rather than assuming this is how it will sound on your board. Thanks again y'all!

Hey I appreciate that!! I was just about to timestamp. Lol. Makes it easy for me
hello fellow german!
this video was so helpful and your dedication to building this board out EIGHT TIMES is astounding. thank you SO much for doing this!!
My pleasure! I'm so glad it helped. 💙
woo thanks for the video man!! I was really deciding to get the capsule 65, but it was just too pricey for me. Then I came across QK65, but wasn't sure which plate to get. Honestly I might go with the POM plate since I haven't try that before, and it sounds fantastic. Awesome production as always!
Thank you so much for the thorough testing, not just testing different plates, but also the foam configurations! Quality content
Ahhh my pleasure homie. I do this for you all, so im glad it helps. Thanks for watching 🙏
Man, I didn't realize you had a video like this. It's exactly what I was looking for to decide on my QK60 configuration
Dang, thanks for taking the time for all those builds! This Deserves all the credit. I know this video doesn’t really call for the patented “clackbait” b-roll but I was hoping you were gonna sneak one in somehow lol.
Ahhh man. You will see one soon! Imagine a plate broll?? That would be crazy. Damn. Shoulda done it.
Ayyy congrats man! You honestly deserve more subs bud, kinda shocked you don’t have more considering the quality a depth of your vids, I still have the one you did on the qk65 in mind where you showed a ton of configs with the different plates and foams, helped out a ton btw! Best of luck in the future.
Awesome video!!! Just what I needed to figure out which plate to go with the QK65. I love how the aluminum sounds with foam, its clacky but clean!
Thank you so much! Glad I could help. Yes the Alu is awesome. Esp the spacebar.
Thanks for making a video. I was looking for the plate comparison and found it here with the review.
Awesome. Hope you enjoyed it my friend.
Just what I was looking for! Appreciate the time and effort. liked and subbed.
Really appreciate that. Glad I was able to help in some way. Welcome to the fam!
Incredible video, thank you for the effort you put into this!
That means a lot Sawyer. Thanks a lot for your support! 🙏
What a great review. It was very helpful. I especially like the sound of the alu plate. It sounds much better than FR4. Thank you.
My pleasure
Exactly what I needed!!! Thank you!!!
Glad I could help! Thanks for watching 🙏
For me the Alu plate seems like best out of all four plates here. Thanks for the video !
This is super appreciated! That's why I super love this channel. Just got my Blue Golden hotswap with FR4 plate, can't wait!
Ahhh nice bro. That's why I love when you stop by!! Congrats on the new board. You in Canada?
@@Clackbait No, haha I'm located in the Philippines.
Right on bro! Tagalog or Bisaya speaking?
@@Clackbait Tagalog! You know how to speak? 😄
No, just the bad language. Lol. Some of my best friends are Filipino
I ordered a Red and Gold QK65 to go with my Iron Man MT3 keycaps. I got the POM plate. I love how the POM sounds with no foam!
We appreciate you doing this!
Thanks homie! 🤜
Exactly the video I was looking for. I'd been leaning towards FR4 but looks like it's the alu for me. Thank you.
My pleasure!
Managed to get the Bue golden colorway and was looking at GMK samurai for it now i know how good it actually looks together. Great video!
Thank you my friend. Def a solid combo
Great comparison, very helpful to help an educated choise of plate. I believe the plate plays an even bigger role in the typing feel depending on stiffness determined by material and mounting type, but it's role in the sound is also very important. Great video
You are absolutely correct. In this case especially, feel is the biggest factor since they all sound pretty similar with the plate foam, accept for Alu. Pom and Alu we're my favorite. Thanks for watching 🙏
@@Clackbait Which plate affects the feel in which way?
From softest and most flex, to stiff. PC, pom, fr4, Alu
@@Clackbait how noticeable is the difference between pc and pom?
I'm glad I went with the FR4 plate as it's able to achieve the sound profile I'm looking for. I plan to use all foams and no silicone with the fr4 plate. Can't wait to receive mine sometime in june/july.
Really appreciate the time and effort you put into this. Helps with what plates I’ll be going with for the QK65.
All the plate foam builds, unless I did them myself I can’t distinguish if I went in with a blindfold (not a bad thing it all sound gr8 it just feel at that pt)
IMO Alu really shines no foam at all
I like POM / Fr4 for most of my boards but I might consider Alu with some mx blacks since this board is “somewhat” more affordable
Agreed. Alu is awesome on this board. If I were to pick 2, it would be POM and Alu.
@@Clackbait I ended up building mine with plate foam and pe foam only with broken in Kailh stem Hyperglides and my god this thing sounds SO GOOD and feels great.
If all my boards this one is my current favorite in my rotations
Thanks for the comparison my guy helped a lot
Yoo glad I could help my friend. 🤜
Awesome comparison (and video of course!) you have a very good microphone and/or placement! Care to elaborate? Do you filter the sound in any way?
Been waiting on this for a hot minute!
That sound tho!! Crisp and clear baby! 🤜
Really tempted to get this board, nice watch man!
Haha. Thanks man. It's my grail
NEED THAT SPICY TYPING TEST B ROLL.
Great comparison. Lots of similarities between these configs which is cool. Makes the plate option a lot more about feel than sound.
Haha. Ok imma have to work on one! You the man Misfire!
This was amazing to watch!
Aww thank you 😁
Thanks for putting in the work. You make the decision to cop one of these easier!!
My pleasure homie. Always good seeing you stop by the channel. Take it easy!!
TYSM for all the work to do this video
My pleasure. I do it for the people. I'm glad you enjoyed it! 🙏
Thanks for his video. I was going t get pom and fr4, but I feel like pom and PC are more versatile because with foam they sound deep, and removing foam you get clack. As opposed to aluminum and FR4, whether you use foam or not, you only get clack, just different volumes of clack. I think I will change my fr4 plate order to pc since I prefer deep sound in general...I find deep sound more soothing. Thanks again.
Thought exactly the same 👍
cool vid dude! I don't know the current state of your audio setup, but I think the quality of your videos' audio would greatly enhance if you'd considered picking up a spine for ur microphone so the desk vibration isn't being picked up. Keep up the effort!
I appreciate the feedback. Actually right after this video I upgraded my mic setup completely. Haha. Check out the new vids and let me know if it's better. Thanks homie. Means a lot.
Thank you very much! Comprehensive vid
My pleasure! 😁
thanks man! hard works right there!
🙏🙏
Thank you for this, it’s really going to help me make a decision. I personally usually prefer aluminum, but POM is looking pretty nice with this one.
Oh my pleasure! Yeah if I were to buy, I'd pick up pom and Alu. That will give you something truly audibly different.
@@Clackbait Why choose alu and POM?
Is it because FR4 is similar to alu and POM is similar to PC
Or are FR4 and PC not so good?
I'm worried about alu and FR4 (I'm going to buy a POM plate!)
They are all good options. Pom is my fav plate material in general. But my point is, if you are using plate foam, and you are planning on buying two plates, go with one soft material (pom, PC, fr4) and one Alu. Just so they actually sound different. The softer materials all sound very similar with plate foam. So this is just a suggestion. Hope that answers your question my friend 🙏.
@@Clackbait Thanks! I plan to use all forms, so I'll choose pom and alu!
After listen to your sound test i went with the pom plate for the thock
Awesome, thank you. I am now torn between FR4 and POM 😅
If you want more bounce, Go POM. Otherwise FR4 is a good middle ground.
I appreciate the video brother! Hoping to secure my first custom when sale goes live
No problem brother. Hope it was helpful. Best of luck during the sale. Make sure you create your account with address and phone number ahead of time!!
Great video as always! side note - do you have a vid on the U80-B? Was debating getting on the new preorder.
Thanks my friend. Unfortunately I don't have a video on that. It does look like a cool board
Nice vid clack!
Thanks homie!!
Thank you so much for these tests! Wondering which one sounds the best with pe foam, pcb foam and case foam for that marbly sound signature, alu and fr4 sound the best to me
My pleasure homie. PE will make any of these plates have that effect. If you want that deep marble sound with maximum flex, go PC. My fav is POM followed by Alu. Thank for watching homie.
@@Clackbait no thank you for taking the time to help us out, I really appreciate it! And I think I will go alu and pom since I have lots of pc plates already lol
Good call! 🙏
Thank you so much for filming this. I was thinking if I should get QK65 as my first custom mech since R2 was out and it has a bluetooth hotswap PCB which was really attractive since I really depend on bluetooth but as a first mech, I am totally unclear of the differences between plates and this really helped me since I am definitely considering getting it when R3 opens.
Oh my pleasure. Glad I could help homie.
What plate/s did you end up getting for your qk65?
Hi Sir, Thanks for an awesome video!
Actually, i'm planning to buy the QK65 R2 (yeah because i lose on the R1 in my country, sad)
And curious about the plate more.
I want to achieve the kinda Thock, but Marbly and poppy at the same time with the Oil kings / epsilon maybe?
And considering to take the POM and FR4. (with all foam without the plate foam i think, IMO the plate foam will make the sound high pitch?)
What do you think about that? just curious about your thought about this one..
Great videos btw!
Thank you so much. I think the plates you are going with will give you that poppy sound for sure. Thock will also depend on switches and keycaps. For me, plate foam really enhanced the sound overall. Def will help your mission for Thock.
Really appreciate the effort to test all those configs! I'm definitely in the deep "thock" camp over "clack" and it sounds like PC/POM are pretty close (saw you liked the POM for that extra pop). Did the extra flex on the PC vs POM feel different enough when typing to be noticeable, or was it too close to tell?
My pleasure bro. PC and POM flex was too close to tell.
@@Clackbait thanks so much -- POM & Alu it is!
so if PC and POM are so close which one to get
@@kevin-sj3wt necroing this post but POM seems like the better choice overall
I see a lot of online people complaining about qk65 lacking in sound character, but I think it's because a lot of the sound test use all the foams and silicone layer. At least based on your sound test of the foamless fr4 and aluminum build the sound is very detailed to my ear, making this board actually very versatile for people who want to experiment with different materials.
Glad the video helped!
thanks for taking the time to do these builds! So for reference, the clackiest high pitched build is zero foam and an alu plate?
Thank you! Yeah I'd say so.
Mate, thank you so much for putting this together man! Really helps me in making a decision on which plate to choose.
P.s. Love your Speedy! Is it a 1863?
Thank you so much. Yup it is, in the sapphire sandwich 😁.
This is love. Deserve a sub. Hoping there will be a comparison for tactile switch.
Thank you so much! That means a lot. If I can do a sound test with Tactile I will, but I know I can't do a full test like this again. It was very long and painful. Haha. I appreciate you my friend.
I'm actually struggling on which plate should I pick for building it with tactile switches. What would you suggest?
I would go either PC or Alu, or both hehe
Insane job man, you have another one subscriber right now.
Would like to ask you something.
Do you consider the FR4 plate the most muted one? I got my qk65 , feel like (i think the plate) helps too much when bottom out when typing on it and i dont really like it, also it gives a muted and too low pitch sound which i dont really like. Whats the typing experience with the POM plate on the QK65?. Ty in advance!
Ayyeee thanks so much! I'm personally not a fan of FR4, probably my least fav. Pom and Alu are my faves. Pom gives a nice poppy sound profile while Alu gives a balanced.
Thanks for the video! I am getting alu plate for sure, and thinking about maybe buying a second one as well. I will be using Boba U4T switches, so do you think a FR4 or POM would be better for that tactile switch?
If you are already getting Alu, maybe go for a softer plate like pom. Those are my two favs on this board. I appreciate you stopping by homie
@@Clackbait you bet! Continue the good work and thanks for the tip!
My pleasure bro. 🙏
excellent video, thanks :)
Thank you!
Thx for the vid! How is the typing feel with the aluminum?
It's def stiffer than the others, but that's to be expected. I think it still feels fairly soft. I really like the Alu sound with plate foam.
and this would start the boom of the qk series and other budget premium boards
very informative videos!
Thank you! I appreciate that
Hey I plan on getting the QK65 (first time ever making a custom keyboard, I've been saving for a long time for this!) and I'm really struggling with trying to figure out what switches (I want linear since I want something easy on my fingers as I type a lot) I want and I'm thinking about going with the gateron milky yellows. Also I really wanted some red keycaps but they all cost so much so if there are any abx or pbt (pref abx) keycaps in general that you recommend I'd love to know!
Also w/ linear switches what plate would you recommend? So far thinking FR4 as I saw another video saying that over aluminum for linear switches but correct me if I'm wrong!
Sorry for the long comment, and thanks in advance I appreciate it! (I subscribed!)
First. Thanks for subscing my friend. That means a lot!
So plate is strictly preference. For this board if you want a soft typing experience, try PC or POM (pom is my fav). If you want more clack, go aluminum. There is no hard fast rule on plates with linear or tactical. It's all preference. From softest to hardest it goes PC, POM, FR4 then Alu.
I'll have to think about keycaps that are budget friendly and red. Do you have a price range?
@@Clackbait Ah okay, I might go with POM in that case. My budget for keycaps would be around 50 bucks, they cost sooo much so ik it's hard to find something around that price range.
Thanks for the quick reply I appreciate it!
My pleasure. I'm not sure I can find some in that range, but if I do I'll ping you. Hit me up on IG.
You legend.
awesome sound test
Thank you! You're awesome!
ALU with no foam really fascinating, it shine and have better sound than other
Thank you so much for making this
Which plate you think is thockiest of all this
My pleasure. I'd say PC
Hey thank you for this good sir, Question tho was the PE sheet included in all of it?
My pleasure. No PE sheet at all. I did 2 builds per plate. One with plate foam only, the other with no foam. Silicone pad was also removed in both.
@@Clackbait ohh okay, thank you again. this really gives me much more confidence with which plafe ill get
Awesome
Hey man! Do you think it's a good idea to go for POM + FR4 plate? Or are they too similar?
If you plan to use plate foam, I would just get one of them and an Alu. That is my recommendation for this board. For PC, POM and FR4, pick based on the feel you want. With plate foam, they all sound VERY similar. Hope this helps my friend. Ramadan Kareem bro.
Legend!
🙏
It sounds like PC with no foam gave the highest pitched sound? Which is unusual from what I've heard from other boards at least
Now add steel plate to the mix. GamaKay TK75 has a steel plate. It is stiff. No flexibility, but typing on it feels great. Would love to see a video of it with steel plate and other materials added into the mix. Thanks!
always has to go with either pom or fr4 for that marble signature. I can make the same test on kbd67 lite. though not the same premium sound but close enough.
Don't have other plates for that board.
awesome video man. my headphones aren't great. does the alu plate sound pingy to you? or am i just imagining stuff?
With no foam in the board there will be some kind of ping with alu
@@Clackbait thank you man, and no ping with the poron case foam?
I didn't find much at all if any
@@Clackbait perfect that helps so mcuh man, thank you!
For the price this keyboard is setting a very high standard. If not mistaken this board have some heft too.
It really is bro. And yes, weighs 4lbs fully built.
Love the sound test, but I can't help but notice in a lot of your videos; you should try to isolate your mic from your desk. It's picking up a lot of that bass pounding sound.
Yes that is a good call. I noticed it more in this video. I got a new mic setup for this one. Need to get a shock mount. Hopefully that helps. If you have suggestions, I'm all ears to it. Thanks for watching homie 🙏
@@Clackbait My sound tests I record also pick up a bit too much of bass as well, even on a shock mounted mic. I use some EQ tweaks to try and replicate the irl sound as much as possible by toning down the bass end of it.
i love that mousepad! where did u get it from?
Here there! Mouse pad is called Deep Deskmat. Not sure if it's available ATM. I got mine from Mekibo.
I like Thock sound and lowpich sound.
PC or POM Plate Whitch one is better?
I’m Japanese My English isn’t very good.
What do you think about the FR4 plate? Also, does it have flexing? Thanks!
Fr4 is just like any other fr4. It's not too flexy.
Have u tried force break mod on it? If so then how did it change the board in terms of sound
No I did not. It really didn't need it tbh. I'm sure it will help, because it just does, but still, not necessary. Unless you go without any foam.
whenever you type on without platefoam, regardless of plate material, i can hear desk reverb. do you think your mic filter some sound?
Not sure, but I hear it too. Any idea of what is causing this? Maybe isolate theic more?
@@Clackbait sounds like you've mounted your mic on the same desk your typing on.
I understand I’m absolutely late to this video, but I’m going to be getting the qk 75 in group buy this week and I was wondering if there is truly any advantage in getting the fr4 plate. I’ve never built with one and it seems to be less flexible without the same sound benefit as alu. Is there any advantage or should I stick with alu?
I personally prefer Alu. That and POM are my favs.
I hate the look of those samurai blue regulars, those keycaps are just so much better with some Hiragana on em.. thanks for the video, it was really helpfull, I ordered a Blue board myself thanks to your video.
Awesome! Thanks for watching
To me, the foam tests all sounded about the same, where the no-foam tests had some variation. Thanks for taking the time to test all these configurations out!
Yes indeed. I said the same thing in the video description. Surprised me quite a bit to how similar they were with plate foam. That's why I recommend 1 soft plate and an Alu for variation. Thanks for watching my friend. 🙏
@@Clackbait My pleasure.. This is Shaginwagon on twitch (from Merlin's channel). Cya in the next one:)
Awesome. Thanks for stopping by homie
Is there any difference between pom and fr4 in terms of feel? They sound not that different but rather fr4 is aesthetically better.
Pom is softer than fr4. Slightly more bounce, but not a massive difference unless you run without plate foam
i guess ill be needing to save up again!
I managed to get my hands on the white/blue qk65. The sale was a crap show, though. The site went down for hours. Lol
Damn. Glad you were able to get what you wanted homie! Are you Frankthetank??
@@Clackbait i am
Aight cool. I thought so but wasn't sure. Hope you enjoyed that video homie.
@@Clackbait i definitely did. And mic quality is hugely upgraded
Glad you think so. I remember you said it was too compressed last time. Had to do something about that!
Damn, they all sound great. Really dig the fr4 no foam! What about you?
Man I really dig the pom and Alu with plate foam
Since the rubber feet cover the screwholes, did you leave them off?
No they were on
Can you help me bro, among all the plates, which do you think is best comboed with my epsilon switches to compliment its sound? Thanks in advance
I have Epsilons in my frog video in an fr4 half plate. Sounds incredible. But I think if you are using plate foam, go with POM. It will sound great! If you want it higher pitch, go Alu. The Alu spacebar sounds great!
I am just planning to use PE foam only and not plate foam? What do you think will be the plate to go?
@@kennethfajardo3604 you chose epsilon for the deep sound, so go with PC or pom would give you the deepest thock possible. But if you want more detailed sound signature you can do fr4 or aluminum.
would inserting the case foam make it less thoccy and more clacky?
It dampens the sound a bit, so depending on your switches and plate, more thocky
No foam POM legit sounds like legos
Thank you for your hard work! Shit must have taken so long to do…
Haha. No doubt bro. And thank you, this was a very tedious task, but it's for my people, so I went with it. Hope it helped you homie. 🤜
@@Clackbait Yeah for sure, gonna be hard to wait while it’s on the way, keep up the good stuff man! 🔥
when using no plate foam, why i hear a bump/thump noice when key stroke?
Great question. That is due to the mic and desk. It was a new mic without a shock mount. So it caused some reverb from the desk to get picked up. I changed it up after this video.
GIVE THIS MAN A LIKE.
And a Sub!!! Haha. I appreciate you 🤜
Hey Clackbait, would like to check will the FR4 plate be somewhat the same flexiness vs the POM plate due to the flex cut?
It's stiffer for sure.
@@Clackbait if you would recommend a single plate which will you recommend? if i want deep cream marbly?
PC or POM. Pom is my fav and has a bit of pop. PC will give you a slightly deeper sound imo.
@@Clackbait POM is your fav for this keeb right? i think i might be going with POM
It was a battle with POM and FR4 lol. currently POM has the edge. If i planning to put all the foam without the PE foam. POM is the best right? if with the PE foam everything sounds the same?
Can you recommend two plate that worth to buy for this board
My favs are pom and alu
Hey please compare the qk65 and zoom65
If possible, with same plate switch and config
Will try homie
@@Clackbait thanks mate, really confused between these two
And this will be my first entry to this budget segment, prolly won't be able to buy another like this for quite some time
That's why all the confusion
I like the POM enter key and modifiers but I like the alu space bar and other keys more... hmm what do?
Bruh. I feel exactly the same. I've been telling people to buy both.
FR4 and aluminum sound so similar, which one do you feel has a higher pitch sound?
Edit: actually, listening to them with foam, the alu seems higher?
You got it right homie. Alu is higher. Generally the softer the deeper, the harder the higher pitch. Love POM and Alu on this board.
@@Clackbait got it, thanks! This helped me decide on my choice of plate
Ayyeee. Glad I could help you my friend
Just copped one, all colours sold out within 10 minutes. Black chroma lasted like 30 seconds lol.
Congrats my friend!
Is it just me, or do all of these plates sound really similar when compared side-by-side?
I'm sure there's more of a difference, I've been able to hear it in other videos, but for some reason I'm really struggling to identify the differences in this particular vid. 🤔
Yeah with plate foam, its hard to identify the difference. Mostly can tell with Alu with the spacebar.
Weird, even with good headphones there's no way I'd reliably be able to tell the plates apart in a blind test (other than aluminum). Maybe in person and side by side it's more noticeable
With plate foam, they are VERY similar. Even in person. Which I why I did it without any foam as well. You can hear a bit of difference in those, but yeah to me, for this board, go with 1 of the soft plates (PC, pom, fr4), and an Alu for some sound variety. Thanks for watching 🙏
@@Clackbait thanks for the advice and great content! Given the similarity of the softer ones, I think I'm gonna go for the fr4 plate for the esthetics of the flex cuts (which no one will ever see 😂)
Good choice. My fav soft one is POM. It has good flex and a nice poppy sound.
Because the audio itself is terrible. Gain way up on a mic that is probably on the desk itself o
Can you recommend me a thock switch for QK65 please? thanks
If by Thock, you mean deep, try the new North Pole switches by Gateron. With the foams, should give a deep thick depending on your config
@@Clackbait thx
PC with plate foam is the best for me.
Alu spacebar never disappoints
^^^ truth!! Thanks for watching 🙏
Hi Mate, if you are to choose only one plate what would it be? TIA
Pom would be my choice. Thanks for watching!
@@Clackbait noted Mate thanks. Keep up the good work.
what is the best plate for clack?
I'd say Alu . You looking for higher pitch?
just got the polycarbonate one, hope I won't get disappointed lol
Edit: after watching the video, I think I made the right choice
If you use plate foam, POM, PC and even FR4 all sound very similar. You will be good. PC is a good choice.
@@Clackbait ok ty, nice vid btw
