- Ready to begin your journey with gouache? In today's episode, we're getting into the basics of gouache: what it is, and how to use it! I'll be chatting about the properties of gouache, the differences between regular gouache and acryla gouache, and showing you a few of my favorite gouache techniques. I'll also be painting a scene from Disney's "Zootopia"!

“practice doesnt make perfect, but it does make progress” what a cute quote!!
The best features of gouache is that it dries really fast, it's opaque, it's re-workable, no brush strokes, and more importantly, it dries into a matte finish which makes it easy to photograph and scan. Think about those illustrations for mid century car advertisements.
YES!! I love the matte quality. 💛
The drying really fast thing is the only feature I struggle with; especially when mixing and blending, so I bought some blending medium mostly used for acrylic paint and it’s been such a huge help!
That’s something I’ve never seen in a tutorial… gouache mixing in the palette. I want to SEE how artists keep it from drying out and not adding too much water, ergo losing all the opaque factor!
I didn't know those older disney movies were done in gouche! So cool to know!
Yep!! Those Disney background artists were such gouache masters 🥰💛
@@allisonalethaMany Studio Ghibli films used Poster colors. Similar to Gouache but it's not Gouache.
As someone who’s never really used gouache (closet thing was a semi gouache style water color), this is super helpful!! Looking forward to the rest of the series 😍
Ahhhh I’m so glad this was helpful!! Oooo that watercolor sounds interesting! 💛💛💛
Thank you! You make it look so easy but I know better.
Awww thank you so much!! 💛
Also.. it’s good to have color swatches. Take a little piece of paper and do swatches of all the colors so that you know what they look like when they dry!
Agreed!! Doing switches is SO helpful 💛
A MUST with all paint imo, but gouache especially. I swatch it 4 times (like a 2” vertical gradient) - 1 straight from the tube/2 water added only/3 with a dollop of Chinese White/ and lastly, 4 with a dollop of Titanium White. Super helpful
"Contrary to popular beliefs, practice doesn't make perfect, but it does make progress"
I like this quote
I literally just ordered a gouache palette a few days ago, this video's timing is perfect!! It'll be my first time using this stuff, thanks for the inspiration! 😀
Ahhh that’s awesome!! I hope this video was helpful! Good luck beginning your gouache journey. 💛💛💛
@@allisonaletha It was indeed helpful so thanks for making this!!
I bought 5, 18 packs of Gouache paint packs from Michaels clearance shelf for $9 each 1 year ago, still sealed. I didn't know how to use it till now, Thank you
I just started gouache today after spurring on a set of some! I am so excited for this new adventure
Yayyy so glad you've started your art journey!! Best of luck to you!! 💛
I use to print with gouache in my elementery and I hate it since then. Now as an illustrator I want to get back to hand painting my work, it just looks pirettier. Thanks for the tips ❤
I just picked up gouache for the first time and your channel is so helpful!
Yayyy so glad you’re starting your gouache journey!!
I've been really wanting to get into gouache, I love watercolor but I wish it was more opaque and I love acrylic but I wish it was more water soluble. Gouache seemed like this happy medium that I couldn't wait to dive into. I just got my first pallete and I turned to youtube for beginners advice. Your video was so informative and entertaining and I enjoyed every moment of it. Your painting came out beautifully and your voice is so welcoming and soft and encouraging. I can't wait to apply what I've learned 💖💖 Onto your next video! Sending you love and light, my friend 💕✨
Thank you so much!! Gouache is that PERFECT in-between medium. I'm so glad my video was helpful for you!! 💛
That's is such a fun cartoon composition.. You are telling a story here and that is so fun to me. The range of colors is great, and I like the rhythm of the boxes with the straight lines and the natural curves of the characters. The use of contrast between warm and cold tones is nice too. I really love this. It's not the kind of thing I typically want to work on, but I enjoyed every second of this video, and I would love to paint this myself and teach my grown daughters how to paint it too. Gouache for the win! It's nice you came in with a color pen of some sort at the end for the list board. Mixed media is a common feature of gouache art. Also, thanks spellchecker for teaching how to spell gouache correctly. I also like how you state your goals. I think for young artists this is a free and easy tool to win at everything every time.
Thank you so, so much!! Gouache is such an incredible medium, and I’ve had such a blast exploring it 😁
Ooh, I’ve been thinking of starting to use my set of gouache, only tried it one time before and after this video I’m super inspired! 🤩 looking forward to the next video!
Ahhhh you totally should!! Gouache is so much fun. 💛 I hope this series is helpful for you!!
Ive been really wanting to get better at gouache and these tips are SOOOOO helpful thank you!!! and the painting is gorgeous I hope I'll be able to paint scenes like this someday!!
Ahh I'm so glad this was helpful for you!! 💛
Hahah I see now where I went wrong xD I went think paint all the way even with dark pieces...seeing how you layer thin I might need to start doijg that too!! And mixing is the hard part, really need to grt used to that!!
OMG this is so helpful. I want to get started with gouache but I had no idea what it is, I just knew it looks beautiful and dreeeamy 😍 this video is so far the best I've watched among the intro to gouache videos on UA-cam. and you have no idea how much I enjoyed watching you paint this scene 🤩🤩 absolutely amazing!!! ❤️
Thank you so much!! I'm so glad my video was helpful for you 💛
And good luck getting started with gouache!! It's truly such a fun and diverse medium 💛
Adding on to Allie’s description I also like using HIMI gouache it’s thick and I think it’s very beginner friendly! I personally use the ice blue set with the 24 colors and 3 paint brushes and think it’s very unique how the colors are on paper and canvas with having the control to how you paint your masterpiece unlike watercolors having to save your white spaces. Remember there is no right or wrong way to express how you paint with your gouache or any medium! Have fun and happy painting! :)
I've heard amazing things about HIMI gouache! The versatility of gouache is so beautiful. And I agree, I like not having to preserve the white of the paper! 💛
Just started using himi gouache but
I buyed 56 colour set so I wonder if I didn't go beyond crazines 😅😅😅
I've only ever used acrylic before but want to try gouache so this was very helpful thankyou!
Yayyy I’m so glad you want to give gouache a try!! 💛
I loved the fat over lean tip! I have always struggled with painting and taking care to not reactivate the layer beneath it. I'll definitely be using these tips. Also, I love the zootopia scene :)
It’s definitely a helpful guideline! Glazing thinner layers over thick ones is absolutely possible (and can create some pretty cool effects!) but fat over lean is a wonderful place to start 💛
Awesome video! And also very awesome painting. Gonna try these tips for my first time gouache session. 🤓
Thank you so much!! I hope these tips work well for you! 💛
Just bought my first gouache colors - so exited!!!
Yayyyy, so exciting!! I hope you love them!! 💛
I really wanted to start to paint with gouache, and this really helped me get better👍

Aww thank you!! I’m glad you enjoyed it 🥰
Very clear, concise, right on topic, and pleasant to watch. Thanks!
I’m so glad it was helpful for you!!
I bought gouache after using watercolors cause I wanted something more opaque, thanks for the video
Yayyyy I hope you enjoy your gouache!! 💛
Have to say I LOVE your painting. So cute, so quaint, so aesthetic. Love farmers market/stands. And these were some really helpful tips I’m excited to try some more gouache I’ve done a couple but ended up treating it more like a watercolor which is fine but I think this will help me get more opaque colors as well :)
That's so sweet!! Thank you so much!! 💛
What I always notice with gouache over other media is the increased use of detail brushes.
Ooo that’s an interesting observation!!
So lovely! And very useful information!❤🤗
I've been eyeing off that pallette! I've only ever used acrylic or watercolour,so this video is so helpful! Thank U xx

Thank you so much for this series Allie!! When I first started watching your channel I had just got my first set of gouache and I was quite confused… nowadays I think I use it more than acrylics and now acrylics seem weird to use 😄 thank you for sharing your knowledge with us! 💖👏
Also I LOVE the new sketchbook paper texture!
Thank you so, so much!! Gouache is such a fun medium, and I'm so glad you're enjoying it!! 💛
Gosh im so grateful that im used to thin layers😅 i change colors while using acrylic so much that i just use thin layers period.
You're awesome. Thanks!

Thank you so much!! I'm so glad you're excited to start painting 💛
if you spray your drawing with a fix spray or a vernis/finish spray the paint, layer is sealed (most , depending on the quality and medium) if you don't want the layers to blend when adding another layer
hairspray as the cheap alternative only less effective
Once you colour the rabbit colour, it looks so adorable !😮 Is it a scene from the Metropolitan Animals animation movie?
Aweee thanks!! It’s from Zootopia 😊
This was incredible!!!! Thank you so luch
Ahh thank you!! 💛
My gosh !!! Just found that you have a UA-cam channel (I come from Instagram) and I just loooooooooove your editing and storytelling style ! The little voice is just so cute and funny 😂. I subscribe
Aww thanks for coming on over to my channel!! 💛
All i’ve done is just sketch with pencil most of my life. I just started Gouache and I never used a brush before so I thank you for your channel and the beautiful work that you do. How long did that piece take you?
Aww thank you!! Hmmm I think this one took me between 4-6 hours 😊
What kind of sketch book you use here ? Truly amazing 😍
I’m using a Pentalic Cold-Press Aqua Journal here 😊💛
Thank you! This was so helpful. Also love the art
Yayyy thank you!! 💛
I am loving your videos! Do you need to gesso the paper before you start painting in your sketchbook? Thank you!
Thank you so much!! And nope, no gesso needed when painting with gouache 💛
i’m a watercolor artist and trying out gouache soon. Should I keep my gouache brushes separate from my watercolor brushes? am i allowed to use them both interchangeable?
Ooo that’s a great question!! I tend to use watercolor brushes and gouache brushes interchangeably, but I’ve heard rumors that using gouache on a watercolor brush can be taxing on the bristles. I’ve not had any issues though!
@@allisonaletha thank you!
@@katherineandjelkovich5361yes I heard the same to use separate brushes
Lack of permanence is kind of what I like about watercolor
I’ve never used any type of gouache before, and I got this gouache pallet it comes with 12 colors and I’m so excited to use it! I’m gonna post a video about it on my art channel! But I have one question do you have to use it on paper only? Or can you use it on canvases too?
Yayyy so glad you’re starting your gouache journey!! I’ve never tried gouache on canvas before, but many other artists have and seem to enjoy it 😊
Oh ok! Thank you for replying! Also what type of paper do you use for gouache?
hi! what resources do you use for your reference images? Is there some sort of website just for animation stills?
Thank you :)
Animation Screencaps is a FANTASTIC website for finding high quality refs!! 💛
that bob ross jumpscare at 9:16 is hilarious
bahaha Bob Ross always keeps things interesting
What type of brush did you use for the eyes of that bunny? Like the one u did to write the sign! Also lovely drawing
Thank you!! I don't remember which brush I used for that specifically, but all my supplies are in the video description 💛
waaaawwwww i enjoyed alot while watching this videow, your english flouncy was incredibly amazing.. keep going
Thank you so much!! 💛
Amazing 🤩
Thank you!! 💛
what kind of paper you use for gouache painting?
For this piece I’m using a Pentallic Cold Press Aquajournal, but I go into more detail about the different types of papers you can use with gouache in the Part 2 video 😊
What is the name of the brush you used to write on the chalkboard? I have always looked for a brush as fine as that!
Hi there!! There's a link to the brushes I used in this video in the description bar! However, I've recently added a new thin brush to my collection that I like even better. It's a Princeton Velvetouch 5/0 Spotter brush 💛
@@allisonaletha excellent! Thank you so much!! 😊
Can you just mix acrylics with gouache to avoid reactivation?
What brushes do you prefer to use for gouache?
I love to use both mixed media and watercolor brushes for gouache!! I talk a lot about the differences between the two and how they fit into my painting practice in the second part of this series 💛
What kind of pencil do you use to outline your drawing at the beginning?
Hmmm I believe this one was a prismacolor col-erase pencil!
The videos great but for anyone wondering studio Ghibli used Poster colors not Gouache.
Apparently Sakura poster colors. Which I believe is the brand are more opaque, and drys WAY faster than gouache and more even.
Super cool
Me a encantado estos videos de gouache por favor continualos ... son geniales !!! 😊😊😊
Oh thank you so, so much!!
Do u know which type of paper is the best to use gouache on?
I have another video on good supplies for gouache (including papers!) It’s in my “Beginner’s Guide to Gouache” playlist 😁
but what about how to open the little containers without hurting your hand? I apparently have the grip strength of a small infant (im an adult)
I dont know if youll reply to this now😅 but where or how do you get your reference for your artwork. Like if you use Pinterest, what do you even search up
For these scene studies, I found the reference photos on the website Animation Screencaps! They have AMAZING quality screencaps from lots of different movies 😊
my cousin gifted me a 36 set of gouache which is pretty expensive and i have no idea how to use it 😂
Ahhh fun!! I hope this video was helpful for you then!! 💛
Please, whats the name of that line curve pencil?
Gouache is evil 😝 I'm determined to figure it out tho, i will not be defeated, even if it takes until I die to know how use it
Bahaha it can definitely be finicky, but it’s SO MUCH FUN!! 💛💛💛
Hii, how do u dry ur gouache quickly
Gouache typically dries pretty fast on its own! I just let it sit for a few minutes :)
Other benefit of acryla gouache, it doesn’t change color when it dries.
I really enjoyed your video and listening to your cute voice. A+
Thank you!!
Did you use water ?
Yep!! Water can be such a useful tool with gouache!
how much do you charge for painting small scenes?
What color pencil is that?
I’m using a Prismacolor Col-Erase pencil here 😊
@@allisonaletha Thanks!
Great video!
Thank you!! 💛
Studio Ghibli uses nicker poster color which is not really gouache
"Gouache and i are bros, man" 😂

I really wanted to watch this video, but it's difficult for my brain to listen to what you have to say and the a little too loud background music. So I couldn't finish watching and won't be watching parts 2 and 3. Please UA-cam content creators no music is best, you are not producing a movie. Instructional videos are best heard with just your voice.
Hello! First of all, I’m so, so sorry about the loud music in this video. I was still quite new to editing, and didn’t quite understand the concept of volume control. 😅 One of the hazards of learning how to edit, I suppose.
Anyhoo, I made a compilation video of this series titled “EVERYTHING you need to know to begin your GOUACHE JOURNEY”, where I smoothed out most of the icky editing, put all these videos in one place, and (most importantly 😅) fixed the music volume issue. There’s still a bit of music in the background, but it’s not distracting anymore. Anyhoo, if you’re still interested in the info from this series, you might give that video a try!
Also, thank you for the constructive criticism! Many people have left comments about the audio in this video, but truthfully, most of those comments have been quite hateful. I appreciate you taking the time to speak your mind in a thoughtful and helpful way!
The music is unbearable
Oh no, I’m sorry!! I definitely didn’t have much experience with choosing music (and adjusting the volume) when I made this one 😅
It’s not even bad! I agree, first you have to get used to it but after a minute I didn’t even notice it anymore! A very useful and informative video and I really don’t mind the music. Be nice!
Sad that you just copied this almost identical than drawing something yourself
Actually this was part of my 100 Scene Studies Challenge! My goal here was to learn more about composition, color mixing/theory, etc. and later apply those new skills to my own illustrations. 😊
Dude, honestly, ty for that perspective at 5:54 I've never thought of it like that before. I'm for sure implementing that into different hobbies. You have given me an extra boost in going all in with no expectations because it is just a cycle. Ty for that 🫶🏽
So glad this was helpful for you!! I just made a new video recently on the creative cycle, that talks about another side of this too 💛
Love how you demonstrated! This is helpful. Thank you 💚
