  • In this video interview, Dr Dan and Professor Brian Gill delve into student-centred learning and its misconceptions. Professor Gill highlights the flawed perception that students inherently know their needs and should guide learning sessions. He emphasises the importance of educators being grounded and centred, likening this to a doctor-patient relationship where patients, influenced by resources like Google, come with preconceived notions.
This analogy extends to vocal training, where students arrive with preconceptions and scepticism. Gill advocates for a 'deep learning-centred environment,' balancing teacher and student roles, encouraging healthy scepticism, and acknowledging the necessity for both parties to adapt and learn from each other.

I enjoyed the discussion in this video!
The title "Student-Centered Learning: A Flawed Approach" seems a tad sensational (i.e. a bit clickbaity) given that the content of your discussion actually provides a balanced critique, highlighting both the strengths and common misconceptions about student-centered learning - misconceptions coming from teachers who either don't know what they're doing, or are justifying their unwillingness to move away from teacher-centered approaches.
From my perspective, student-centered learning is incredibly valuable when implemented well (I would say 'correctly', but what do that even mean? Everything is context / learner dependent). It fundamentally forces students to take an active role in their own education (as well as classroom / community participation in general), developing critical thinking skills and a sense of ownership over their learning journey and their impact on their class/peers. However, it's essential to ensure that teachers remain grounded and provide the necessary guidance and structure, which requires a different kind of expertise from teacher-centered approaches. Both student engagement and teacher support are crucial for creating a dynamic and effective learning environment.
    Great insights overall!
