The idea of items that de-level you in an MMO with a multi-class based leveling system seems really smart. Not only does it become an interesting cost for more powerful spells and items, but it also doubles as a pseudo respec system. Like if you wanna change one of your classes, just de-level till it's gone then go level a diff class. Really neat honestly.
The only major downside I could see to a system is what would be needed to replace levelling as a progression system. Since many games use levels as one of the main goals of progression. By making levels easily obtainable, and expendable, there needs to be a different form of permanent upgrade to make up for it. In Overlord, it seems that it was mostly unique gear that became the main focus of progression.
But eventually once all or most the unique gear is obtained, it basically just becomes a hardcore PK-style game. Which although has its fans, is actually quite an unpopular genre of game. So its unsurprising that Yggdrasil eventually became unpopular to the point of its servers being closed.
Lineage 2 did a variation of this actually, in my opinion its the game most similar to Yggdrasil I know.

This is not a new concept. It has existed in MMOs for as long as they have existed. (And the first MMO game went online in the 1970s... it was labeled as a MUD or 'multi-user-dimension'.
Many MUDs and older style MMO games have utilized such mechanics and items within their games.
Hell the entirety of North Circle and Diku MUDs is built on the concept of level changing mechanics.

With levels being exchangeable for other things, items and areas of the game in which levels can be lost or used to open additional areas of content. (MajorMUD and basically every Diku MUD has such mechanics mind you.)'
With the equipment/gear that players acquire being the primary source of Stats, and having certain items or accessing certain areas of the game being the markers for progression. (Along with in-game titles or flag-type identifiers indicating things players have done/accomplished being visible to everyone in the game....)
Hell, even the old games like Tradewars 2012 have such mechanics built-in.....
When this video came out, I was freaking out a bit thinking season 4 came out and I already missed several episodes.. So glad I was wrong.

Sounds like Ains actually had a rather strategic mind that was wasted in his human life, his limited experience was his main limiting factor but he seems to be over coming it abit. In short he is no dummy and he has the ability to learn from mistakes not just his but others which is a very valuable thing to be capable of.
Isekai qaurtet did not do him any favors, so it would seem.
Where I’m at in the light novels he’s far closer to the the supreme being the guardians see him as and and is far less of just some random normal guy
I think losing his emotions and becoming undead likely helped a lot
You could see his rapid growth in the fight with clementine when he quickly became more and more competent with every swing
He's not stupid by any means. He's just uneducated because information is controlled in the world of 2138. And really, the same thing exists in real life. There are probably potential geniuses in impoverished nations that just don't get the opportunity to develop the way they could.
In the anime Ainz looks half of the time like he doesn't know what he is doing, while in the novels he is brilliant...
Not to what Demiurge thinks, bet he is definitely smarter than what the anime shows.
@boogiepop Yeah, always making sure to have a backup plan, and only using extreme measures when absolutely necessary.
That said, i have only watched the anime and it still came across to me that he was extremely cautious, despite how he is portrayed otherwise ; so all is not lost in adaptation.
@Silence Yeah to me as well. Especially in season 4, the way he handled the adventurers guild negotiation and proposing to control knowledge from being used against him was dope.
I was frankly a bit surprised when I read the ln it was a strange discovery but I actually really like how ainz is portrayed as fairly intelligent but still frankly overwhelmed and confused.
In the novel Ainz actually summoned two death knights. The second knight was summoned without the use of a corpse to see what would happen, and just like in the game the second death knight disappeared after a set amount of time. I know it may not have been worth mentioning, but I thought that was a fascinating little tidbit of how the undead summons work in the New World.

I’ll miss the Shield Hero Cut Content. However, I understand that it is difficult to keep up with the cut content since season 2 is deviating so much from the original story. I’ll be eagerly waiting for the second part of “How Strong is Naofumi?”
Also, if it’s not too much to ask, I think that a video about your thoughts on how they handled the adaptation of the second season of Shield Hero would be nice. I loved the first season and it’s sad to see that the second season wasn’t well adapted.

Overlord is more like cut details shield hero is more direct cut or charged content. Not calling shield hero worst adaptation but it pretty low on the actual scale. Edit overlord adaption is clearly not as dark but that the main difference.

Where do you see shield hero deviating ”so much” from original story? You clearly just know nothing and follow the hate wagon.
@@-AytaL- there's 1 aspect in which the anime deviated, that being that instead of Raphtalia being separated from Naofumi/Rishia before meeting Kizuna in the Labyrinth, she was separated and captured by Kyo as they were porting to Sickul via the DVR

The early part of the series was honestly my favorite. The constant worry over where he ranks compared to the new world, the whole mess with shalltear confusing things, the constant misunderstandings and ainz always feeling as if he looked like a fool when everyone else was in awe of him, especially with the wise king debacle.

These videos are what finally got me to go ahead and read the light novels, I got the first volume and it didn't take more than the prolouge to get me back online and buy all currently available volumes. So, I'm glad to see them back :D

I already spoiled myself on a few things after reading a good chunk of the light novel and some of the manga but I'm still excited for season 4. The lore on the new world and some of its creatures is really interesting.

Judging how each season so far encompasses ~3 LN volumes, season 5 is going to get darker than a pre-industrialized city that's run out of candles at midnight in a cave circling the event horizon of a black hole.

Overlord content is fascinating, everything makes sense and it seems like it would be able to work in real life too. The consistency is amazing unlike other anime where they just keep getting stronger even if they say it’s impossible

Started with assassin amd after making friends iended up with every type of champion maxed out level 155. Easy tk level up when your maxed out friend takes you to the hardest dungeon and allows you to split xp

I was a bit blue balled when the book didn't actually say what the 3 conditions to be met were. I've seen speculations on them and have my own. But you have a more in depth view that I enjoy.

Right now I’m actually listening to the audiobooks for overlord
I like to think that when Ainz found himself in the New World, knowing there could be other players like him there, he immediately found himself in a literal Dark Forest Theory scenario (basically meaning calling out to potential friendlies would alert any hostile beings to his presence as well, hence his decision to remain as silent and secretive as possible).
And on the subject of other players, I had theorized for a while that anyone that was logged on when Yggdrasil's servers went down had all been transported to the new world, albeit at different points in its timeline, which is why some arrived hundreds of years prior to Ainz, and others that may not have even arrived yet. Unfortunately though, since he was the only one in his guild online when that happened, this would mean the chances of him finding one of his friends in the New World was essentially zero.
