- Hello Everyone!
Welcome back to Rules as Written, this week I am continuing working my way through all twelve classes in the 2024 Player's Handbook.
This week it's time for The Ranger, and we are focusing on some of Pop Culture's favorite supernatural hunters, The Witchers, from the novels and short stories of author Andrzej Sapkowski.
Let me know what you think of the build, and subscribe to the channel for more Dungeons and Dragons 5th edition content!
Come back next week to check out a Rogue build, taking advantage of the Bugbear Species.

Thank you! I have a lot of love for the Ranger, so it was fun to build with it. I think next time I'll see what I can do with a Halberd and Cleave Hunter, using Horde Breaker for some extra attacks.
Interesting build! I at first thought Monk levels for a Witcher was a bit strange, but now that I think about it, the Witcher Schools are pretty much monastic and disciplined
@@manandshark same here, I was thinking “This Witcher is punching for3 of it’s 4 attacks, that’s strange.” But I think the flavor is on point even if the attacks are a bit strange.
I'm a huge fan of both Ranger/Monk builds and The Witcher, so this build absolutely captured my interest. Another home run, dude.
@@ProfessorArgus Thank you! I’ve been using 5ish levels of Monk in a lot of multi classes lately. It just adds so much action economy, it’s hard to resist.
@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuilds my Drake Warden Ranger is probably gonna be taking 5 levels in Monk and doubling up on dragon power.
@ Way of the Ascendant Dragon subclass?
@@RulesAsWrittenCharacterBuildsmost likely. I think Kensei would probably work better, but the opportunity to call myself the Double Dragon Warrior is very tempting.
@@ProfessorArgus I love me some Kensei. I want to do an Archer Monk build with it sometime. Maybe throw in Find Steed and go for a mounted archer.
Great build again! Excited to see what you do with the rogue and bugbear.
@@brycebrian8798 thank you so much! I’m looking to have the bugbear video posted next Monday!
i love these i wonder can you try to flesh out a dual whip wielding bugbear that would be cool
@@DrMinecraftMeme Next week’s bugbear build is going to be dual wielding! It’s going to short sword and scimitar though. A whip would be really cool for that crazy reach. Maybe a battle master fighter for a lunging attack too?
with your monk level you already gain a deflect attack that compete with shield for your reaction. so you might be able to grab burning hand instead of shield without loosing too much defense. You can also reflavor the deflect attack as your protective shield.
Not sure why you go monster slayer instead of the new and improved hunter from the PhB 2024. instead of 1d6 against 1 target, you gin 1d8 again all injured target... When you cast hunter mark you ALSO learn the resistance and vulnerability of your target
Then I
Deflect is for a single attack where as shield last until the start of your next turn. Vast difference......vast.
Yeah, Burning Hands feels like a way more proper Igni, Firebolt won't even get used much since we have our hand crossbow. But I really wanted to pair Agile Parry with Shield for a huge AC increases. But I wouldn't blame anyone for taking Burning Hands instead.
I was definitely tempted to go with Hunter, Hunter's Mark telling the resistances and vulnerabilities was nice. But I think Slayer's Prey from Monster Slayer has a bad wrap, so I wanted to give it some love.
Plus, since they took Whirlwind Attack and Volley out of the 2024 Hunter, I didn't love the subclass as much as I did. Especially since I just came off a Baldur's Gate 3 playthrough with the Hunter, and I was whirl-winding like a madman.
But yeah, it really comes down to I wanted Magic User's Nemesis, and Supernatural Defenses. However I see how Hunter has more versatility, and consistent damage.
That's a good point about the Epic-Boons, honestly I haven't done much reading into those, I'll have to check them out for later videos!
Instead of multiclassing, just homebrew a race/class for the Witcher.
Meaning you make a Witcher Races and then add in the Witcher features along with the schools which become subclasses.
Or just buy the R. Talsorian Core Rulebook of the Witcher TTRPG. DnD can't get the dangers of the Witcher World.
@@Fenlander216 I haven’t checked out those yet, I’m pretty Vanilla DnD only haha. But yeah the Witcher monsters are in a league of their own danger wise.
