Ballad of Frankie Silver

The Ballad of Frankie Silver is a story about the wrongful hanging of a Southern Appalachian teenager in the year 1833. Told by Dr. Thomas Cloer Jr., an ancestor of the Howell family. Members of the Howell family were key witnesses in the murder trial. This story was referenced in the Pickens County Courier, on May 13th and May 20th, 2020.

Thomas is a maternal cousin to me. His ancestor; Fannie Howell, was the sister of my ancestors Elizabeth Howell, who married Frankie Stewart's brother Lt. Jackson R. Stewart, who are my 4X GGPs. Such a sad tale in our ancestral history! Ironically, In 1929; the musical group called The Hot Shots, recorded the Ballad of Frankie Silver. The Fiddler of the Hot Shots was notable Clarence Horton Greene, my 2X great grand uncle & also a great- grand nephew of Frankie Silver. His fiddling is played at the end of cousin Thomas' story here.

I wondered how a teenage girl would have the guts and strength to dismember a body. That would take some doing. This made so much sense. Poor Frankie.
