Reminds me of a time when I was dating my girlfriend and took her and her 3 year old son in the Matra Murena to a pancake restaurant on top of a hill near Nijmegen (Duivelsberg). When we wanted to go home, the starter motor of the Murena refused to do its work and getting to it isn't easy in a mid-engined car. Then I realised we were parked on top of a hill. Pulled the choke, selected second gear, released handbrake, depressed clutch, she gave the car a push and after it picked up some speed downhill, released clutch and it started! Made an everlasting impression to her because I've kept my cool. Three years later we've used the Murena as a wedding car. Sold the car because it had become one seat short, we got her son a little sister. ❤
@@Khar_Toba there are quite a few hills between Nijmegen and Berg en Dal (lit. "Mountain and Valley"), especially if you take the Zevenheuvelenweg (lit. "Seven Hills Road") which is like a rollercoaster if you take the speed limits less seriously in a lightweight mid-engined car. 😅 But indeed the rest of the country is as flat as the pancakes they were serving in that restaurant!
Reminds me of trying to describe to my wife how to bump start my Honda 50 Cub. She made similar faces. For the curious you select 2nd gear whilst on the center stand and while seated, briskly rock the bike off the stand while holding the gear pedal down and release it up as soon as the center stand clunks into the up position. Always worked for me.
Great to see the Smart move under its own power and see you drive it. I can see you falling in love with this little car and being kept on the fleet. Here's a little something for the fleet fund.
I've been a fan for some years, but as things happen, this had drifted to a secondary watch for me. But I love the Smart FourTwo, and I'm now riveted to every video. This is great! Love it!
Ian is like all men a child! But a very happy child, because his 🆕 toy works! Sort of ish!😂😂😂 I totaly dig it! I’am the same kind of child😜And Carly You’ve got the right spirit, it will be doable ! I hope 🤞🤞🤞at the end! 👍🏻👍🏻🆙
I had a friend in Melbourne, 19 years old, probably an inch or two taller than Carly, just passed her test, who drove a yellow 1972 Mustang. The enormous one. It belonged to one of her brothers who IIRC was serving a driving ban. She wasn't at all into cars, but it certainly gained her a lot of male attention. She eventually bought a 1980's Corolla as her first car. Before watching the video I was betting the Smart couldn't be bumped. Shows how much I know.
There’s something about you guys that I find wonderfully comforting and down-to-earth.. In a world of car payments as big as mortgages and constantly wanting new models, this channel brings me back to my childhood. Love it!
Ian, you and Carly DO make QUALITY entertainment. Your videos are wonderful. Never sell yourself short, you are one of the best UA-cam channels out there in my opinion.
Ian Ian Ian…. You must be careful. You said you had “finally driven MY new car”. The Carly look 👀 should teach you it’s “finally driven OUR new car”. ;) Got to treat the boss nicely, man! 😂
Theres no finer thing than finding a way to start a car without a working starter motor. Gutted she didnt start on the key after turning her off but hey-ho that's the way it goes sometimes. Also i didnt know you could start a smart by bump starting. cool. Carly makes me chuckle with her 'its designed to be come out in a beautiful unit' hmmm yep 18 years of corrosion will be a git on the fixings but I know you both have the will and will find a way. I look forwards to watching the next adventures 🙂
Well! I've learnt something AND really enjoyed watching this one! - We have so much more to do on our 450 (full suspension rebuild) - glad you are bringing the Smart ForTwo to the masses :)
Miss hubnut was quite confident in controlling betty So much fun another great video has always Ian and Carly miss/mrs hubnut and hublets and hubmutt 👍
Swap those little hoses in the engine bay for silicone. Known to fail and then you end up in (very slow) limp mode. Bet you rarely see a petrol station. It beats the classic Beetle in my view and I've lived with loads of those. Smarts have heaters! Also removing polystyrene lump in front of battery on passenger side and there will be more leg room. Miss mine. SO much fun to drive.
my mate had one of these 20 years ago, he bought it brand new. He did about 70k and the thing was an oil burner, by that point. He said to do stuff to it, the rear subframe had to be dropped down, but the four bolts are very long. I don't think these have a sump plug from what i remember him telling me. He had pump the oil out of it from the dip stick. Very basic cars and i have to say these are the modern mini really. He had no bother with his at all, and loved it.
A useful technique I have found for when driving an automatic and you are not used to it, is to fold your left leg under your right, as if you were beginning to sit cross-legged. I'm 6'4" and there's always been room to do it in every one I've driven so far. Prevents those involuntary stabs on the brake pedal as you arrive at junctions.
Another great adventure, I have several Smarts but I didn't know you could bump start them, loved the grin while driving it, and what a trooper Miss Hubnut is, driving the Aussie tank and shoving you off. Maybe check power and earth to start motor if you haven't already. Her name is?????
I understand there is a service tool comprising four longer subframe bolts. You swap these in and they allow you to jack the rear of the car up while the subframe remains on the ground. Apparently there is enough slack in the wiring, brake lines etc so they don't need to be disconnected. You then have enough space to work on the engine.
Nice! Four years ago I was looking for another car. And I thought about buying a Smart. Finally I found my Citroën C1 without any comfort extras. Until now I didn’t regret to buy her. The engine bay is also quite tight but - in comparison to a Smart - it’s a tennis court… Good luck with your convertible! 🚗💨🇫🇷
I was given a Smart as a courtesy car while my Land Rover was in for servicing. It was the most terrifying experiences of my life and I used to drive Reliant three wheelers back in the day . Still quite fancy one for doing the local shopping runs though.
Lol, Ian Carly. What smarty fun ahead .. shame about a sale coming up 😢 but Giselle hopefully will be having a excellent new home 😊 see you soon at a meeting 😊
The smile on your face speaks volumes, Ian.. there just brilliant fun ... Will never part with my own, i really love the thing 🙏 Did you have poor carly running behind 🫣 I wouldn't get away with that 😁
Ian. You were razzing (and why not). Quite a funny video hearing Miss HubNut's running and panting outside within the Smart 😂. I think your Smart looks great, and you're both enjoying it.
As the Smarts gearbox is like a electronically controlled manual gearbox you can bump start them. Other cars automatic cars you bump start is old Mini's and Plymouth's with Torqueflite gearboxes can do it too.
Well done getting her started. Have fun dropping the motor. I love the smart for two. It's a fantastic thing but yeah the suspension is definitely more smooth race track than off road , it's definitely stiff. Our smart 451 can be quite jarring over the lunar surface that we laughingly call roads
Plastic BBs are great for cleaning dirty reservoirs, with some washing up liquid. Better than rice, as they don't soak up water, and you can use them over and over.
Worth knowing this! My own smart is having some strange intermittent issues ATM . Mine are much more minor than yours and the bloody thing still stresses me out so I admire your can do spirit.
Miss Hubnut is a natural driver. 👍 better to have a shaky leg and be cautious than do what I did. Move my Dad's Passat Estate. Get carried away and use the brake like a clutch on a busy road because I forgot it was auto. 😅 I was lucky and my Dad never knew about my little drive. Never get an enthusiast to move your car. They always get carried away and go further! 😂
I’ve had good success with a dishwasher tablet dissolved in water for cleaning grotty washer bottles. Just dissolve it in a bit of hot water then top up the bottle to fill with cold and leave for 24 hours or so.
Great video, miss Hubnut pushing baby smart for all she's worth and Ian musing about whether it would stay in first and start or switch back into neutral, seamingly unaware of the effort being expended! You are a big kid Ian, revving the poor little engine to 'free the alternator' ... not just for fun honest! The only thing missing was miss Hubnut accelerating madly and cackling whilst Ian squeels like a little girl!
Flashback to a time my Mini's alternator died, and there I was on a dead flat road, in the dark. I tightened the fan belt... alternator fixed... and push started it on my own. Luckily, it was, of course, nice and warm, so it started easily. I guess as this was the first time starting the Smart, you had all the chips stacked against you, and thus a good hill was a wise move.
So good to see Miss HubNut driving and confident behind the wheel (well, as confident as most people would be). I hope you can get stuck into this pretty quickly, would be a shame not to have it on the road.
Try caustic soda with your Matiz washer bottle. I've used it before to strip anodising off aluminium, so it stands a good chance. Oven cleaner may also be a good shout.
Hi Ian, just undo the left hand engine mount and tilt the engine down from the gearbox end, remove the intercooler first. It's tight but perfectly doable.
Proper job! Had my doubts that rolling down a hill would work as normally an auto needs to reach 25-30 before the engine starts to turn. I always had to use the handle with my Riley's as had centrifugal clutches, was well up a creek sans paddle one morning when some burke had parked 3" from my bumper, the car facing downhill so couldn't push it back. Suppose I shouldn't have parked overnight with the side lights on but was a badly lit road and the street lights went off at midnight then. The car was black so not easily seen.
Well done, Miss Hubnut. Knew you would master Betty in 2 seconds. After driving a manual for a long while, I also sometimes have to get used to driving an automatic. Somehow it seems more difficult to get the pedal control sweet spot in an automatic than in a manual....for me at least. But when I have an auto car, then in no time....I'm used to it and Enjoy the laziness
A happy day you drove your Smart they will bump start also Miss Hubnut makes the Smart look big and fix it up for Miss Hublet great first car for a young novice driver not to much power and its a two seater
I had an early one for a number of years. Mine had the "almond" shape headlamps which were later changed to the "peanut" shape. One thing annoyed me was the early ones were 121 g on the emissions so were just one gram over the cheap tax when that came in. Had to pay £121 against the £35. You will find it a handy little car for nipping around and I suspect if you keep it you will find it will be the go to car for everyone.
Looking forward to smart adventures I think you have to keep her atleast for the driving season and see how you get along. It definately fits in with the fleet!
So sorry that you had to sell Giselle we have a fiesta on the farm and I love driving it in the fields but after 2 years it’s come to end needs a lot of money spending on it but such is life but so exited for smart content!!!
I think it should be recognised that Miss Hubnut went above and beyond. I think if I asked my partner to take part in such a caper, I would have a good idea what the answer would be!
Another episode of inspired Hubnut lunacy. Don't really know why I watch, but have decided that British eccentricity really is unique. Perfectly normal-looking people who reveal that they are off the wall. Had a Newsastle couple for friends when I lived in London decades ago. They thought they got better mpg out of the Maxi coming down from Newcastle than going up. "Well, driving back to London is downhill. That's why." I'm sure Isaac Newton would agree. Ahem.
I have trouble with that corner of the roof on my smart as well, but If i open the boot and pull it really 'smartly'🤪 down it locks. Hope this works for you.
It would only have been fair to give Ms. HubNut her turn behind the wheel of the Smart. When both the Smart and Maybach were current, the Mercedes dealer near my work had them parked on the lawn: one Maybach with three Smarts parked nose to tail alongside.
A couple of reminders of my past in this video: pushing my Datsun Sunny along the length of the car park at Peterborough station to a ramp in sub-zero temperatures at three in the morning so I could bump-start it the same way as you starting the Smart - and a comment by Mrs. Le Vert the first time she drove the automatic E34: "why haven't we had one of these before?". Great video, just makes me realise how much I miss my E60 ☹
Yeah, wintertime bump starts. I think two years ago I volunteered at a castle in a somewhat colder part of the world. It was Friday and a work crew from out of the area wanted to go home for the weekend but their van wouldn't start in the sub-zero weather. We briefly considered getting jump leads and another car but quickly decided we were enough people to easily turn her around manually and send her down a little hill. The younger of the two workers panicked as he had no idea how to bump a car and even offered to let one of us try but the older one said "no problem", got in, second with clutch down, we gave her a push and off she went. I think there was enough juice left in the battery to run the glow plugs so the big diesel started quite happily even on a fairly small hill.
Here on our side of the pond, where automatic gearboxes abound, two pedal driving is severely frowned upon, unless using the brake to load up the torque converter (for a drag strip run) or for traction purposes whilst freeing the car from snow and ice. Driving instructors will chastize you for two pedal driving an automatic. Side note: the extra wide brake pedal in an automatic is great for testing the anti-lock brake system while exiting the Interstate, especially when you've been driving a manual gearbox for a while, and forget that you're driving an automatic, and try to engage the clutch 😂
you and carly have done engine swaps, so doing the starter motor/alternator on the smart, you will be fine! we need a name for the smart, and associated merch!
Miss Hubnut is really coming into her own, eh? So much more confident than at the beginnings :D Well done. Btw. Smarts have a thing. Some drink oil like mad if the various evap hoses are cracked or blocked. Still remains to be seen if yours is one of those :)
Nice test drive and Carly's first drive with automatic transmission. Have properly driven only once an automatic car myself, in late 2022, my parents VW T-Cross. Certainly interesting experience as all other cars I've driven have been with manual transmission. In the spring of 1993 I briefly moved classmates automatic Honda Civic in a parkinglot, but that doesn't really count as a proper drive.
Same here, OK twice if you count an EV as an auto. Once I drove a mate's mid-90s Nissan Primera home because he was too tired to go on, a decent stretch of motorway and some city driving. Not too bad but I really missed engine braking at motorway speeds, I'm too used to just easing off the accelerator if I want to slow down, and the car mostly keeping its speed even going downhill. The other time I drove a Nissan eNV-200 that had been stretched into a 7.5 m bus, mostly on the motorway. I also had a very brief driving lesson in that Nissan, during which I was firmly told never, under any circumstances to brake with my left foot.
@@HubNut Interesting. I have a 451 but need to unlock before opening. I prefer to use the button on the dashboard because I don't like the feeling of the door not opening when I pull the lever but it always catches out passengers 🙂
It's not as difficult as it sounds but looks scary if you aren't mechanically minded. The rear of the subframe has to be lowered and the whole subframe/engine tilts down at the back on the front mounting which pivots. As you take one rear mounting bolt out you are supposed to replace it with a longer"service" bolt and then do the other which allows the subframe to drop but it can be done without the long bolts just make sure you don't drop it too far by leaving on the wheels or use stands. Nothing on the engine has to be disconnected. It just needs to come down app 4 inches which then allows you access for the starter and alternator. It's not a regular thing so if done properly will possibly never need to be done again. I would recommend paying the subscription to Evolution and you will get actual experienced articles on all thing Smart.

The incredible fortune of having to bump start a car and finding yourself on the only hill in the Netherlands
Also the good fortune that you chose a car with petrol engine, manual gears and reasonably light weight.

You had that future hooning opportunity look in your eyes - that Smart could be in for a surprise once fixed !
Can confirm that was absolutely the look
I have trouble with that corner of the roof on my smart as well, but If i open the boot and pull it really 'smartly'🤪 down it locks.
Hope this works for you.
The smile on your face Ian says it all! 🤭
It would only have been fair to give Ms. HubNut her turn behind the wheel of the Smart. When both the Smart and Maybach were current, the Mercedes dealer near my work had them parked on the lawn: one Maybach with three Smarts parked nose to tail alongside.
I commend your reference to Grill2Till for 450 parts. Seriously nice guy.
So much more confident than at the beginnings :D
Well done.
Great video, thanks now I want smart again.
Woohoo! Fun times. Well done Miss HubNut 👍
I lived on a hill when I had my fiat Regata back in the late 90’s. I made frequent use of the gradient. 2nd gear always worked best for me. 😅
To unlock a Smart from inside, pull the door open lever twice. Once to unlock and again to open the door.
The drivers door appeared to unlock and open in one movement.
@@HubNut Interesting. I have a 451 but need to unlock before opening. I prefer to use the button on the dashboard because I don't like the feeling of the door not opening when I pull the lever but it always catches out passengers 🙂
What a pain in the arse just for a started 🤯👍
Good luck changing the exhaust- Jon Couplands poor dad had an issue or two trying to change his !
if possible I'd get the old exhaust welded up. Replacement smart exhausts cost a pretty penny because the cat is built into the silencer.
