I’m just a regular guy lol nothing will change that. =)
I've always loved LaSalles, and that color really is beautiful. And the snow white top is a perfect fit for that blue. I don't know about that interior, though. It's clearly not original, and whoever restored it must've done it himself. Luxury cars just didn't have interiors that plain and unadorned. There should be some sort of stitching design on the door panels and probably channeling in the seats. But besides that, it's a drop-dead gorgeous car.
That interior definitely seemed a bit plain but I’ve never been in a LaSalle so I didn’t know.. The thing that irks me about Cadillac during that time period is how basic everything is in the dashboard layout.. it’s kinda sad just too simple I want to find some from the 30s and 20s that’s for sure they were a really cool brand =)
I remember the Fonz hopped up Mr CunninghamsLaSalle on a episode of Happy Days, to bad i can't really recall why,its been a lot of years since watching the series 🤔✌love the videos ❤

Thanks Jay. Really enjoyed this episode. I guess it goes to show we live in different times where car companies have a luxury brand based on the economy cars are more affordable. It doesn’t make sense for manufacturers to under cut themselves where products from the same brand compete. I don’t have any money so competing with the big boys doesn’t even feature besides I’m not taking my full driving test until late June. I can’t even afford the insurance. I just want to have a driving licence. I’m 56 and it’s about time. My Mom’s rust bucket will be about all I can afford. She bought it for £600. A bright green VW Polo circa 1996. The bondo on the drivers side says it all lol!
I did not know about the TV show or I would’ve used that jingle I was looking for a lyric that would work with a car I forgot to mention, I think I saw somewhere that 1940 was either the best or the second best production year that’s why they were going to do a 41 but I’m not sure why they canceled it
"All in the Family" was the TV show; a run away ground breaking hit from the 1970's about the Bunker family. Starred the great Jean Stapleton as Edith and Carroll O'Connor as Archie.👍🏼
I never had a La Salle but knew a girl named Sally. 🎵 Sally, that girl 🎵 😂😂 I preferred the 39. It seemed just a bit more streamlined to me. For WYR, the 40 Zephyr. For next episode, 30 Packard. Love your voicing the quote from a rabid fan. 😂😂😂
I understand. Me too in my own way. 😂 The Sally song reference is from a dirty 80's song by the Gucci Crew. All I remembered was the line about sally🤷🏼♂️
Not a car comment, Jay, but since you also feature a bit of music, you might find the origins of Boston interesting. Lead singer Brad Delp certainly had an amazing voice but the genius, literally, of Boston is Tom Shultz. Look him up sometime. MIT grad, trained classical pianist, taught himself to play guitar, drums, etc. Wrote the songs, played all the instrumentals and recorded the entire first album in an apartment house basement. Delp was hired after the album was done and the vocals were dubbed in. All of his recording and mixing equipment was designed and built by him. Other artists still use his equipment designs today! Take care!
Yeah I think Boston is a crazy band it’s insane that it was one guy in his basement and then he brought on a singer.. and then found guys to play live with.. Tom Shultz is nothing less than amazing. I have no idea how you would be able to play all that stuff and put it together and arrange it.. that was definitely a gift.
Ok Jay!: Have to go with the Packard again! For some reason I have never been a fan of the LaSalle. They were enormously popular when they first went on sale in the 20's because they looked EXTREMELY similar to Harley Earl's new Caddies. An exception for me is the 1934 LaSalle. Those were SWEET looking. If I had one ever, it would be a '34. Voted already on the Packard for the next episode.
Great to have you back Jay, nice car, the Caddies are worth a look from what ever period, I think. (for different reasons. The earlier models were going for the High-end market along with RR etc) Then as the market declined for the total limousine experience, it became less international, and squarely a domestic market vehicle. (that's how read it.) With some classic style cues along the way. (I.e. 1948, 1967.) She sure is beautiful from the top front view, Jay. (the hood ornament looks like something else to me.) I grant you, the absents of running boards shows the way of the future. (Though the SUV (Ute) trend has seen their return) Is the Antennae frenched in, or is it missing, more likely, or it's a water trap. I really appreciated your 'Led Zeppelin' introduction to the low slung V8. I feel you, brother. It has a lot of external hardware missing, which is likely best addressed by re-manufacturing to spec? (if available from a club or by taking measurements.) An expensive repop, as your source advises. 1. Packard 120 2. Packard standard 8. It's a style and quality issue for me. Packard only existed with a singular objective, back then, A focus they probably lost for lack of finances to pursue adequate R&D, by the 1950s? Just taking a punt. Music is a time machine, which can transport you across the decades, often to a once forgotten place or situation, or girl? Cheers Jay.
Thank you jay for another wonderful presentation just wanted to let you know they referred to that area where the smaller grills to the sides of the center grill was referred to cat walks ?, I have no idea why but that was what they called that area, maybe the neighborhood cats were always walking on them 😂, I’d love to see the packard
Striking looks. 9:52 Wonder if those are factory directional signals. 11:19 Just a glove door. Maybe the box was an extra cost option. 😁 WYR choices -1- The Packard -2- Packard
8:00 There's barely room for a duffel bag in there, probably because the convertible top stores into what would have been the front of the trunk. But even the non-convertible versions of these pre-war cars had the back seat pretty far back: good for legroom but bad for trunk space. The trunk floor is also quite high, making me wonder if there's room for the spare between the frame rails underneath. If a customer could have bought a retainer to put the spare down there, that would have freed up some trunk space. There were probably also ways to put the spare on the bumper while setting out on a long trip, and with the short back end of this car, it probably wouldn't have affected the handling too much.
In your comparison picture of the 1939 vs 1940, you can see 3 holes drilled into the 1940's rear fender at the front. It must have had either chrome or rubber stone deflector trim mounted there. Makes you wonder how GM knew they needed those heavy hood springs and extra trunk lid braces. Did they know before they built the car, or did the hood/trunk drop on someone first?
Do you just review cars or would you review a really exceptionally rare truck? I have the only remaining known example in Australia of a 1936 Studebaker 2T2 J5 ACE long nose. There is very little information regarding this truck, I've owned mine since 1997 and have very little information on it but I have enough to know it's super rare. It was exported around the World but very few examples remain.
@@What.its.like. Australia unfortunately, you'd be lucky to find one in the States, I'm guessing they'd be a couple around in car and truck museums that have a large Studebaker truck collecting covering every year of manufacture.
Great choices really need to get out and do more Packards more is what I’m getting from the comment section trust me I’ve been looking I love Packards I just can’t find them and when I do find them they are too modified to show.. Seriously who hot rods a packard
I have to begin with thank you! The 1927 LaSalle started Harley Earl’s career with GM and by extension, the creation of the design department at GM called - Art and Color. I had never noticed the Pierce Arrow design element before but absolutely do now - good eye. I’ll take the Packard and would love to see a feature on the Willys whenever you have time. ~ Chuck
I vote Packard twice for simplicity and definitely got Amanda by Boston correct today. PS Its cool you have a VW Ghia. Is it the stock 1641cc or any mods?
I don’t have the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia anymore I had that probably eight years ago.. it was a 1973 coupe four speed stick 1600 dual port engine it got phenomenal gas mileage 32 miles to the gallon I drove it every day we bought it to flip it it was the hardest car that I ever sold because nobody knew what it was. Great choices I guess I made Amanda too easy I’m gonna try harder tomorrow lol..
@@What.its.like. An older member of the extended family ran a VW garage from the mid 60s through the 80s when VWs were plentiful so we had all manor of them from Bugs and type 3 hatchbacks to vans and sand rails. A few years back I saw a VW badge peaking from under a tarp. When I took pics and looked it up it was a rare one I'd never heard of called a Grosse Karmann Ghia type 34. Not as pretty as a regular Ghia to me but a real hens tooth.
I would prefer the 1939 LaSalle's dash, with the larger numbers. The area between the hood and the fender is called the catwalk. I would choose the 1940 LaSalle 50, and would vote for the 1930 Packard Standard Eight. We pronounced Willys WILL-eez.
@@What.its.like. Okay--I could have said the area between the nose grill (on this LaSalle) and the fender over the wheel is called the catwalk, though it can extend further back if there is a deep indent. This may be a term from Britain, where headlamps were very commonly located in the catwalks--that reduced the overhang on the front of the body by keeping headlights deeper in than if they were in the wheel fenders.
I saw that in the shot you can definitely tell Woods chrome and wood stain was that car had stainless it shows up different on film than it does in reality sometimes it’s harder to tell
Lots to like about this channel. Comparing the '40 and '39 I see they were trying to modernize the look. Both are beautiful but the '39 seems to push all the prewar buttons for me. I mean, you just gotta have separate headlights... The Robert Plant impression wasn't half bad either.
@@What.its.like. I lived in the Allentown area and was floored at how much prewar there is in your area. Have you considered prewar pickups. The Dodge Brothers famous Ram truck is beautiful and would make for some nice content.
Yes, I agree, the headlights in the fenders do look like a Pierce Arrow style of design. Vague recollection.. early Pierce Arrow headlight housings looked like waffle cones, I think the style may have originated in France, first used on bicycles by Pierce Arrow..
@@What.its.like. yes! Pierce Arrow was a great innovator, and they made cool travel trailers too! On the Glidden tours they were renowned for their reliability, and earned their ranking among the three P's. ⭐ ✨

Thank you so much for the correction I saw so much conflicting information once I said the series 50 Road a wheelbase of 120 inches where is the series 52 Rode a 123 inch wheel base in the professional car such as limo and stuff roadi159 inch wheelbase I ended up finding a club that deals in just LaSalle’s they said 123 inches
Correct. Almost all non luxury cars came with hubcaps and if you opted you could purchase the optional full wheel covers. I personally liked hubcaps because they never flew came off when hitting a bump while driving as wheel covers often did leaving drivers chasing them all over the road. Other people called hubcaps “poverty caps” because they were standard equipment.
The LaSalle was an almost uniformly great looking car across all generations; it even managed the mid-30's potato look reasonably well, and the 34 is Art Deco heavan. (I admit though, I never got the accolades given to its debut year - oh, it's a Hispano-Suiza! - maybe because the late 20's to me are still emerging from the bolt upright box on frame designs that emerged from early closed car proportions, especially the sedans) It was also generally a bargain, but particularly from 34 on - although a Buick Century in the same price class could dust it. But, it was a parasite and siphoned sales from Cadillac itself, even after they brough out the Series 60 in 1936 which was a major departure in an era of more affordable owner-driver Cad. And so, no 41 LaSalle, instead the Series 61, which sold a boatload more. that pencil thin LaSalle grille was wildly popular with customizers back in the day. The 52 used GM's torpoedo body, the 50 did not. The Series 90 Olds got it, as did the middle Buicks and even the top Pontiac. That door panel isn't right, among other things - this is more of a good project..... WYR: 1) the 120 for nostalgia and because it's a Packard :)
Awesome thank you so much fir all that information =) Really great points thank you for adding that part about the torpedo body I saw conflicting information so I didn’t add it..
My grandfather bought what I believe was a 1939 coupe in 1954. Spent a lot of money rebuilding car at local Caddy dealer. Remember helping my dad lengthen garage to get car in. Shortly after hwy 401 went past London Ontario my grandmother wanted to try it out but missed the on ramp, what to do? pull a U turn on top of overpass then a hard left on way down. Car went to small museum in Iona Ontario then I lost track of it. l
I could not possibly chose between those three cars because I would pick anyone of them as they are all such wonderful automobiles. So maybe I would have to do it randomly. I see that most people are choosing the Packard 120. I would imagine though that the Lincoln Zephyr is the most valuable of the three convertibles.
I try to make the would you rather is hard and I try to put it up against the competition that’s what the competition would’ve been back in the day.. The Packers looks so much more classier than the last sale in my opinion but if you wanted something more low-key I guess the LaSalle would be at the Packard the dashboard looks million times better I’m not a fan of the dash from Lasalle during this time period it’s too basic
@What.its.like. mine's still a project car. I haven't touched it since I bought it. Still plotting and planning I think I have a plan of attack. Mine is going to end up a custom
4:13 you and me both brother.. I was thinking of the price quotes you’ve provided just the other day out of know where while I was in the garage. What’s goin on.. my thoughts, these are not my thoughts, actually from mcm unicorn mad hat cat, the car company’s are inflating their prices to make up for having to switch to electric over the legacy internal combustion’s engine’s they’ve spent all the money refining…
It’s absolutely crazy, I can’t believe how much anything costs now frankly I’ve never seen inflation to this magnitude... I’ve only bought one new car ever it was a 2014 veloster r spec turbo in white.. (really hard car to find new) I loved that car but it was cursed.. ended up trading it for a 2011 Subaru Outback limited (full loaded) anyway it took three cars to get rid of that and it was only $21,000 car.. I have no idea who can afford to lose $100,000k on a bmw or cedes AMG it’s $50k for a decent truck and mustang that’s the world we live in..
Awesome choices all three of those cars were very unique in the last scenario the Chrysler in the Packard had so much space in the back it was unreal the Packard felt like you were in a limo..
Awesome choice thank you so much I really appreciate that you dig this episode =) I think I’m going to start doing a comment reading section at the end just to show people how ridiculous some people sound.. but I’ll read the good comments to just add to the randomness of the random moments at the end of each episode it might be a comment it might be a song it might be a joke it’s just something random something extra for the people that stuck around to the very end =)

Nice summary of the companion GM series. The exterior of this vehicle is good, but what is up with that interior? Yikes. Not impressive at all. Took me totally by surprise.
Eeny meeny miny mo LaSalle or the Zephyr? I like both to tell the truth. I'll flip a coin...heads, Zephyr, tails, LaSalle. It's the LaSalle. I like the grille. And the hood ornament. Too bad GM decided to discontinue the LaSalle in 1940...it survived the Depression only to be killed off when things were starting to look up economically.

Still amazes me how these "luxury" cars of that era you really needed to drive them. No Lazyboy reclining heated seats that you can put in drive, put the cruise control on and go. And I will never understand why car companies have this need to niche market brands. The beginning of this video talked about LaSalle, Marquette, Pontiac and Viking. GM tried again with Aurora, which they finally decided not to launch as a brand but just an Olds model and Saturn. Ford did it with Edsel, Continental and Lincoln. . Chrysler had DeSoto and couldn't make up it's mind about Imperial. They ended up selling against each other and not other companies. But I guess if they can sell that you're better off status wise driving a basic Mercury or Olds instead of a fully decked out Ford or Chevy, as sale is a sale. 1) Lincoln 2) Willis
Great choices =) one vote for Willys Thank you so much for adding that they tried to Junior companionship sort of thing later on It was a luxury to drive these cars

This is a car community and try to run this channel how if I was the viewer what would I like to know/see in an episode, also be personable with my base. I’m just a regular guy lol nothing will change that. =)
Packard ....I always look forward to your videos
Awesome I hope the Packard wins =)
I've always loved LaSalles, and that color really is beautiful. And the snow white top is a perfect fit for that blue.
I don't know about that interior, though. It's clearly not original, and whoever restored it must've done it himself. Luxury cars just didn't have interiors that plain and unadorned. There should be some sort of stitching design on the door panels and probably channeling in the seats. But besides that, it's a drop-dead gorgeous car.
That interior definitely seemed a bit plain but I’ve never been in a LaSalle so I didn’t know.. The thing that irks me about Cadillac during that time period is how basic everything is in the dashboard layout.. it’s kinda sad just too simple
I want to find some from the 30s and 20s that’s for sure they were a really cool brand =)
I remember the Fonz hopped up Mr CunninghamsLaSalle on a episode of Happy Days, to bad i can't really recall why,its been a lot of years since watching the series 🤔✌love the videos ❤
Glad you dig this channel =)
It’s been forever since I watched happy days
LaSalle transmission was the shit for hotrodders in the 50-60's.

@@What.its.like. And, in LA area we have Peterson Museum, and the very cool Nethercut "San Sylmar" Museum.
I want to go to the Pearson museum so bad I would love to do some cars from there too..
Glad you dig this episode thank you so much for sharing that story =)
what TV show theme song included this lyric, "gee our old LaSalle ran great. Those were the days." it's a class car, maybe to compete with Packard?
I did not know about the TV show or I would’ve used that jingle I was looking for a lyric that would work with a car I forgot to mention, I think I saw somewhere that 1940 was either the best or the second best production year that’s why they were going to do a 41 but I’m not sure why they canceled it
"All in the Family" was the TV show; a run away ground breaking hit from the 1970's about the Bunker family. Starred the great Jean Stapleton as Edith and Carroll O'Connor as Archie.👍🏼
@eric Ruud I figured it was something about wwii but couldn’t find any information to back that claim up
I never had a La Salle but knew a girl named Sally. 🎵 Sally, that girl 🎵 😂😂
I preferred the 39. It seemed just a bit more streamlined to me.
For WYR, the 40 Zephyr.
For next episode, 30 Packard.
Love your voicing the quote from a rabid fan. 😂😂😂
Haha yeah that’s how I read all the bad comments in my head lol
Great choices
I didn’t know about that TV jingle or I would’ve used it.. lol
I understand. Me too in my own way. 😂
The Sally song reference is from a dirty 80's song by the Gucci Crew. All I remembered was the line about sally🤷🏼♂️
2:04 Again with Harley Earl ... such a great designer.
Yeah and was at gm his whole career which is rare
Packard 120 👍
Another great episode 😉👏👏
Glad you dig this episode =)
Is the radiator a tall skinny thing?
My dad had one, light yellow. I remember playing in it when I was between one and two years old. I pretended it was an airplane when its top was down.
That’s awesome thank you for sharing those memories =)
Ok Jay!: Have to go with the Packard again! For some reason I have never been a fan of the LaSalle. They were enormously popular when they first went on sale in the 20's because they looked EXTREMELY similar to Harley Earl's new Caddies. An exception for me is the 1934 LaSalle. Those were SWEET looking. If I had one ever, it would be a '34. Voted already on the Packard for the next episode.
I have to find a 34 LaSalle that sounds like that would be a lot of fun
Great choices I believe the Packard is coming tonight
1. Packard 120
Cheers Jay.
Thank you so much for all the added information =)

One vote for packard
I'd take the Lincoln Zephyr.
Sweet choice =)
Thank you jay for another wonderful presentation just wanted to let you know they referred to that area where the smaller grills to the sides of the center grill was referred to cat walks ?, I have no idea why but that was what they called that area, maybe the neighborhood cats were always walking on them 😂, I’d love to see the packard
One vote for the Packard

The Packard one that’s what’s coming later on today =)
The coupe version is stunning.
Striking looks. 9:52 Wonder if those are factory directional signals. 11:19 Just a glove door. Maybe the box was an extra cost option. 😁 WYR choices -1- The Packard -2- Packard
Great choices
LOVE your videos!
Thank you means a lot =)
All great points that tire takes up some space and there were parts back there if I remember correct. Load floor was lower than a Volvo p1800
That trunk was one of the heaviest trunk hoods I lifted..
Where are you located I’d review that truck
@@What.its.like. Australia unfortunately, you'd be lucky to find one in the States, I'm guessing they'd be a couple around in car and truck museums that have a large Studebaker truck collecting covering every year of manufacture.
Packard x2. Though the Lincoln is a super close second.
~ Chuck
Chuck thank you so much =) for watching, glad you dig this episode
I vote Packard twice for simplicity and definitely got Amanda by Boston correct today.
PS Its cool you have a VW Ghia. Is it the stock 1641cc or any mods?
I don’t have the Volkswagen Karmann Ghia anymore I had that probably eight years ago.. it was a 1973 coupe four speed stick
1600 dual port engine it got phenomenal gas mileage 32 miles to the gallon I drove it every day we bought it to flip it it was the hardest car that I ever sold because nobody knew what it was.
Those ones are rare and cost a mint I’ve only seen a handful in my life
I would prefer the 1939 LaSalle's dash, with the larger numbers. The area between the hood and the fender is called the catwalk. I would choose the 1940 LaSalle 50, and would vote for the 1930 Packard Standard Eight. We pronounced Willys WILL-eez.
Great choices =)
Front grills is that called fender on this car? Not the nose grill the other grills
Awesome thank you so much =)
Packard and Lincoln awesome car
Great choices =)
Back in the day, most of the "chrome" was indeed "Stainless"
I saw that in the shot you can definitely tell Woods chrome and wood stain was that car had stainless it shows up different on film than it does in reality sometimes it’s harder to tell
Lots to like about this channel. Comparing the '40 and '39 I see they were trying to modernize the look. Both are beautiful but the '39 seems to push all the prewar buttons for me. I mean, you just gotta have separate headlights... The Robert Plant impression wasn't half bad either.
Thank you =) glad you dig this channel
Not the best singer in the world but I’d like to have fun. It also shows I’m a regular person
Definitely would love to cover some more pierce arrow products I would love to find a trailer or travel lodge
@@What.its.like. yes! Pierce Arrow was a great innovator, and they made cool travel trailers too! On the Glidden tours they were renowned for their reliability, and earned their ranking among the three P's. ⭐ ✨
always rather have the Packard--they re great cars and seem to be timeless in styling
Sweet one vote for packard
Hey Jay,,,, is it "CHROME"?? >>> or..... is it "STAINLESS"?
On the car it looked like it was stainless I couldn’t tell under the fluorescent lights but I could tell on the screen it looked Like stainless on the computer screen
Both years had available large and smaller hubcaps.
Thank you so much for the correction
I saw so much conflicting information once I said the series 50 Road a wheelbase of 120 inches where is the series 52 Rode a 123 inch wheel base in the professional car such as limo and stuff roadi159 inch wheelbase I ended up finding a club that deals in just LaSalle’s they said 123 inches
By the way this was considered a premium level car, a step up from a Buick, but a notch down from the luxury level Cadillac.
Awesome thank you so much fir all that information =)
Really great points thank you for adding that part about the torpedo body I saw conflicting information so I didn’t add it..

I’d chose the Lincoln Zepher.
Great choice =)
Upholstery by Julio's in Tijuana, Mex.
the 39 looks "Classier" to me. The '40 looks so plain.

They should have made a "Companion car " for Chevrolet. A twin cylinder air cooled engine could have saved money to lower the price.
Wow that sounds like an awesome concept =)
LaSalle !

Lincoln Z
Series 50 Conv., vs Series 52, you ddin't note the up-sweep at the back-of, the rear fender. You need glasses, dude.
Great choices =) one vote for Willys
